Exactly right! if you ever watch a mother K9 correct her puppies or a dog correct another dog's bad behavior, it's more harsh than anything I've seen Garret apply. Those positive only trainers want you to think that anything besides food rewards is cruel, but in my opinion that's because they want to vilify any trainer not like them so they can get more business. There are 11 YO twins down the road with a new puppy (our dog's sibling) and they are going to a dog obedience course at the local pet store. I guess they've been going for 4-6 weeks and I've heard them mention they have been working with their dog on heeling and such. A week or so back I was in my office and I heard some fussing out front and the dog had gotten off leash and I grabbed my Jim Hodges biothane leash and used it as a slip lead to keep the dog under control while the harness was put back on. Once that was done I asked why they were using a harness, and they said that is what their dog trainer told them to use. My wife looked at me and stopped me from saying anything, but considering a "professional' dog trainer told them to teach their dog to loose leash walk using a harness, that rules out compulsive and balanced trainers already. A harness in dog language means "PULL", thus why you see a harness on sled dogs in Alaska. Our dogs are half pure-bred Husky, but we're not pulling anything. I'd send them to Garret's channel, but I don't trust 11 YO boys to properly use a prong collar, and they live with their grandmother full time. I'm probably going to have to take over after they realize the trainer they have didn't get the job done for loose leash walking.

I have heard so many negitive comments about training dogs to be service dogs, to they shouldn't use harnesses, prong collars, or electronic collars. But to me if you are doing it the right way, it will only help keep your dogs safe.

I’ve been watching your videos on leash walking, and decided to try out a prong collar with my German shepherd that is 7 months old. After about 5 minutes of walking, there was a big change. I worked with him for about 20 minutes and he is doing well! Not the best, and still needs more training, but the difference from taking him on a walk yesterday to today is mind boggling! I’m glad I found your videos! Some of the others I watched didn’t really help out!

Essentially, I never judge dogs. I judge owners. I'll watch a dog's body language. How relaxed are they? Are they checking in with their owner as they approach me? If I don't see an attentive owner-dog connection; I'll give them a lot of room. My pet peeve is people that choose small dogs because they can overpower them; but fail to train them. Those are the stressed out ankle biters that you need to be wary of. It's sad that big dogs get a bad rap. I could tell that a new dog in my neighborhood was used to getting bad vibes from strangers. I received permission from the owner and gave a lot of positive attention and affection to the dog. It went from shocked to complete enjoyment. It was a great dog! The owner really appreciated that someone else saw how good their dog was, and also relaxed a bit more.
@mischake

This is great. The moment i was sold is when he explained "the dog is hunting. Instead, have him pay attention to you" when you walk a dog, the leash is a steering wheel and tension on the leash is a signal to turn, or stop, or come along. You own the leash, not the dog. With this principle of pay attention to my lead, i taught a dog to stay, sit, down, and on his side several meters away from me without a leash.

I just adopted a 2 year old pit bull. Given up by his first family back to the breeder. First interaction was not so good for him. Very energetic, horrible leash manners and manners in general. Told the breeder I would take him for a week and see how I could do with him. I had another pit bull previously for 12 years. Long story short the dude was a pain but such a sweet boy. Little weird around smaller children and dogs which had me very leery. I bought all the tools I needed and poured my heart into this guys videos and in 7 days I have a completely new dog. His ENTIRE demeanor has changed and he is so much more obedient and calm. I have fallen in love and owe so much to these training videos. I don't know 100% if I will keep him but have for sure become his new adopted home and will do everything I can to equip him with the skills to be a good boy, he deserves it.

So I have a Aussie Puppy of 4 months. He was pulling on the leash so hard, you could hear his nails scratching the pavement. No amount of me pulling back would help. He would lean into the pull using his bodyweight as well. Unwalkable. I learned from you guys about prong collar. I got one. I was skeptical but I was willing to try anything. After only 2 corrections, He was walking almost loose leash. 2 Corrections. I was blown away. I didn't have to correct him again. Now our walks are much more exciting, because it frees me up to give him treats and train him, instead of spending the whole time trying to fight pulling. This saved me probably weeks of frustration. Love you guys.

my aussie is almost 7 months and same thing but he would loose leash walk till he got towards the end of the leash and take off like a freakin bullet... i got him a prong collar and he is a dream to walk now. he is a soft dog like temperment and dealing with new situations so i figured if i take him somewhere new we have to take our other dog for him to see there is nothing to fear... just have fun.

You will succeed in loose leash walking using a normal collar I suppose. It will take longer and you will need to give more corrections I guess. I once looked after a adult rottweiler for a couple of weeks (handlers/owners away on holidays). It took me several days of morning and evening walks to get the dog to behave properly.

I have this exact issue with my 55lb male Border Aussie. I’m a frail 100lb woman in my 20’s. Walking him (him walking me) is the most dreaded part of my days. It’s how I broke both of my wrists needing surgery. He tugged me down some stairs to lunge at another dog where I fell and landed on my wrists. I want to take him everywhere - to stores and restaurants as the lady in the video said. I’m absolutely going to be trying this. Thank you

You hit this one right on the nail. My soon to be service dog was still struggling with leash manners after a month even though we were making progress. You are absolutely correct we do need prong collars for moments where our dog decides that they no longer wants treats or they are not hungry or you ran out of treats. I had this happen and I went to Petsmart IMMEDIATELY to get a prong collar. He is doing AMAZING now, learned leash manners in under 10mins.

Out.. Standing! Thank you! Kitty, aka "Ding Dong" (for when she's acting ditzy), is a GEM! Now, a 3 yr old rescue I've had for a year and a half. She's a mix of 7 bigger dogs, two predominantly pity's. (The rescue told me Lab and Boxer, not even close. Not an ounce of Lab in her, but she does look it.) Trained her to the point she's on a first name basis with many of the stores in our area! It's to the point the managers have got on their store comm's to inform other associates that "Kitty's here." Walks in Home Depot are no problem as with other stores. "Left side, right side, back, forward, she'll pick stuff up when I drop it, the whole gamut, a real champ! I've trained her with a pinch collar and she's responded well to it and it's our go-to collar for every occasion. Have used an e-Collar primarily for 50 yard retrieves and only zapped her a couple of times, (because she was hiding under the trailer and didn't want to take a bath). She still cowers when it's bath time, and will reluctantly slither up to a 4' stack of training pallets. And now comes when called for bath time without the e-collar. Her big downfall, (she actually has two), but her big downfall is when she see's another 4 legged creature! It's like all her manners go out the window! Her trigger! Other dogs! I have the prong collar but rarely use it because she responds so well to the pinch collar. I use the prong once every 4 months or so when she starts getting a little too rambunctious on the pinch... But after watching this vid, tomorrow we're going back to the prong collar and heading towards the dog park for a walk to start to curb her reactiveness! This video is outstanding! Why I didn't think of the prong collar to mitigate the issues with her reactiveness towards other dogs earlier is beyond me? Thank you so much! I've had offers from others to buy her, and turned down some generous offers. Why in Walmart the other day, there was a line 10 deep just to cuddle with her and take pictures with her! Many will cringe as I'm training her to be my service dog. (That's so when I totally can't walk, I can put a saddle on her and rider her around!) I was told that service dog's shouldn't interact with other people... Non-Sense! I've trained her and she responds to eye commands, voice commands, and hand commands, and so as long as she's on her "A" game, I have no problem with her interacting when people want to take pictures with her... OK, sorry, I digressed. I have all the confidence now, after watching your vid, that if I use the prong collar, she'll get the message and ditch that reactive, trigger towards other dogs! OH! The second down fall as I mentioned earlier that she has is... She's a BED HOG! When I got her a year and a half ago, she shivered for the 1.5 hour ride home. Just shook uncontrollably. So I picked her little self up, put her at the foot of my bed and cuddled with her to try and settle her down all the while thinking, "Mike, you could be starting a real bad habit here." And now, a year and a half later, sometime she'll share my bed with me! J/k as all I have to do is look at her and she'll slither back down to the foot of the bed... Only for me to wake finding her tucked with her nose inside my armpit! Hence, one of her nick names, "Ding Dong!" Thanks again! Sincerely appreciate the effort and informative material you put out here for us. All the best, Sincerely- Mike n' the Mutt, aka Kitty, aka Ding Dong! 😀

The problem with the gentle leader is that most people don't use it correctly and, because of that, it can cause a pinched nerve in dogs who have longer necks or who are taller like Great Danes, Greyhounds, Standard poodles, etc. - I know from experience. That is just one reason why I don't like them either and prefer the prong collar.

Love your content! Our 16-month-old boxer "Smoke" is a nightmare on the leash (I'm a fit 38 y/o former marine with my left shoulder, finger and arm getting destroyed by his explosions XD). He's a fantasticg companion, clever, kind, ADHD MAX, no anger, and no aggression whatsoever, EVER. He, unfortunately? also has practically no interest in food rewards. He does love his biting and pulling toys though (so do I)! He learns quickly (he knows how to grab, hold, let go, sit, lay down, stand, stay, place, etc. (within the house 90%, thus far, outside 10-50% depending on his mood), but leash walking and outside playing and control is very challenging. Trying your techniques, with food, doesn't really work, he simply doesn't care outside. I did figure out that using your techniques (yes, free, watch, etc.) does work if I reward him with a tug- of-war! so, now I'm training with that. my question: Can you maybe make a video on how to use toy rewards, both in general and for leash walking? I did order a pinch collar (even though they are illegal in the Netherlands) to help him understand better what I expect of him outside (ill be introducing that gradually in the coming weeks), but it feels like I need a "carrot" first. keep up the great work.

Some dogs don't have food drive for training. But might you also be giving them too much breakfast? Maybe hold back a portion of the breakfast to use in a morning training session? It's worth a try.
@Mr.quamfy
@Mr.quamfy Год назад
@@elizabethbottroff1218 great tip, we actually implemented this in a way (he usually gets two meals of 250gram Royal Canin Boxer. I took 1/5th of the amount off of each meal to "motivate" him into taking treats as well as lengthening his walks), so thank you! unfortunately, he still doesn't really care for food for some reason; especially in new environments, and on his "standard" lap (not even hotdogs) 😢 In the meantime, we trained walking around our apartment building and neighbourhood, he's accepting treats more and more. The excessive leash pulling is gone now, which is a relief. The goal now is getting him to focus on me more, working up to a proper heel. Right now he still walks a head length in front of me, with minimal effort attention; barely looking from the corner of his eyes. Pubescent behaviour, but progress at least ;-p

I really appreciate your videos... very informative and helpful. We recently adopted (wife and daughter wanted another dog after our other Pitbull died last year) a male stray, one-year old, 70 pound American Staffordshire Terrier that pulls and lunges like a locomotive if he sees other animal (birds, deer, squirrels, or picks up on a animal scent, or sees another person walking nearby. My wife and daughter can't walk him if he gets triggered because he'll pull your arm out of your socket if you hang on... it's dangerous. So, I have to walk the dog, mornings, afternoons and evenings. It would be nice if other members of the family could walk this bull of a dog, because I can't all the time.

So my Mighty Paws martingale collar and Herm Springer prong collar came in the mail today. (And the safety connector, of course.) I tried the martingale by itself first. My 4mo old German Shepherd does not give half a sh!t about it. He acted like it was a challenge, like he was pulling a sled to the gold mine. It looks cool, though, and has less of a chance of breaking than a store bought collar, I suppose. The prong collar, though; has my dog walking at my side with a loose leash after 30 seconds. We did two half hour walks today out in public with hardly any problem. Pup got a self correction right after we put it on, then I showed him I want him at my side. Stayed there the whole time.

I've done training with my dog all the time and he has the same drive as this dog. I've never used any type of collar other than a cheap leash. If he gets to far ahead I give him a voice command to reset him. You have to train the 1st yr. What you allow then will carry over for yrs. Also it's your demeanor. Dogs can sense your attitude. If they think they can get away with it. They will do it. Give them an inch. They take a mile. Yes the other types of collars help but that's sort of a retraining type of thing. A dog who has been allowed to pull for so long. Means you have to reset them, as he says. That type of collar is like their mothers teeth. Your resetting him back to being a puppy status and this is how it's supposed to be.

My 7 year old German shepherd dog is not too bad on the lead, but he is inclined to walk a little too far in front of me. I would like him to be near my pocket so he can engage better with me. Should use this video's process to achieve si similar results Love your channel, keep up the good work.

This training method 100% works. Plus you have a GSD, if you do this right i guarantee they learn with their in under 5 corrections. You have one of the easiest dogs to train on earth, GSD are the best. Btw if you don't have a pronged collar just use the regular one works just fine (just don't use a slip collar, those are hard to use correctly). Remember to exercise the dog before training so they are more relaxed!

Hi Garrett, my german shepherd is 3 months old and he's scared of going for walks. When we're leaving home he won't follow and on our way back he pulls me home. I don't have a prong collar. Would you suggest using one this early? I've had him for a bit more than a week now. I wanted him to get comfortable before using the prong collar. What do you suggest?

Do you you think this would work on smaller dogs? i have a Chihuahua pitbull mix hes on the smaller size maybe round 10 lbs? and hes very anxious around dogs and even yaps his mouth around people but lunges for dogs, (he thinks hes a mastiff and wont turn into a bigger dogs chew toy if provoked) i was thinking about getting the prong for him and my doberman (he pulls snapped one of our heavy duty leashes) and an e collar but id how id correct for barking with an e collar

I see you have the Unleashed class and Perfect Walk class. Which would be ideal for a dog that is overall pretty good on leash, but freaks out (to the point of attacking their own tale in a circle) every time they see a dog? This is a miniature pincher/shiba inu.

im pretty sure you can start training puppies around 6 months or earlier they gotta be puppies first lol i personally really recommend socializing and such early on or you make the mistake n your dog turns out anxious n aggressive around ppl n other dogs
@alexpearson2920
@alexpearson2920 Год назад
You should start training as soon as you get him. 8 weeks is the minimum you should get a puppy. Don’t underestimate their intelligence. Discipline them if they purposely disobey you. If they’re just being a puppy & get distracted / confused, they don’t need discipline. Just correct them (show them the right way things are done). Stay consistent & they will learn with enough repetitions. Get the right breed based off your activity level. If you’re pretty active, a Labrador Retriever is good. If you’re a couch potato, get a chill breed like a Bulldog or a Great Dane. Socialize them with people & dogs early. First impressions are lasting impressions. Good luck :)

@MCGuyTV Yea its so stupid. What happens if you got a extremely pulling dog and a hand injury. The dog will get hurt and dont get enough exercise and the owner will get even more hurt. Nowadays everything is a joke with parenting haha

@@finaldreamerx Understatement of the year, Randy. We've created a real mess with all of this "over-correctness." With respect to animal parenting, it is far more sensible to simply prosecute people who harm animals by ANY means, and let the rest of use care for our animals in the safest, most compassionate manner, saving lives.
