In this video we discuss the 03-08 Lexus and Toyota 4runner Driveshaft clunk / thump problem. This issue also presents itself as if you were lightly rear ended after you stop. Sort of a "whack / sharp lurch forward when you stop. Check out the vid for the most common fix!

Thanks a lot for posting this video, I have spend a lot of time and money at the dealers both Lexus and Toyota for the clunk. They all said its normal because its 4X4. I replaced exact same part on my 2005 Lexus GX470 (37110 60A40) as you showed in your video today and there is no more CLUNK!. I greatly appreciated your help!

Clutchfield clan has a good video on how to gr see the driveshaft to help the issue. Replacing it is the only real fix, but you can help with proper driveshaft servicing.

Hi i just saw your video and i have the SAME Problem BUT BUT i have a 2006 Lexus GS300 AWD and im having the same problem Back in 2006 till NOW that this Problem is still going on on the GS Class Bodies now on the GS Class this problem Starts at around 112 to 115 Thousand Miles ive did some searching on the inernet and people are saying too replace the Computer ( ECU or ECM ) and have it reflased by the Dealership so i found a company that Sells the Computer and Flases it for you But when i put the NEW Computer in it Still did the same thing but i Noticed some of my car features did not work so i think this company did not do a good job when they flashed the New computer so i Returned it and got my Money back and i Thought it could be the TCM or a Driveshaft Problem. Can you Please Help me out ? this is driving me crazy i can send you a personal message with my phone number and we can talk on the phone better ? Help me out Please ? Thanks

Should a 4runner owner purchase the gx470 sealed or non sealed shaft or just get the revised 4runner shaft to fix the issue?

IMO only go with the grease-able axle. The only time I would not would be if I had a custom axle made with some beefy dana joints.

I have the noise ( like a sticky clunk) when releasing the brake pedal after slowing, usually to a stop. I've never had this issue with our current GX470 ( 04' hers )and this GX470 (mine) is new to the family. It does have 215k albiet in rather good overall condition. Any input is appreciated and thanks for the video regardless if helpfull for my issue.

Grease the heck out of the universals and slip. If the problem goes away temporarily, get the new driveshaft!

You're awesome!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU!! This is the issue I've been dealing with for over a month now. I'm a woman and divorced and I'm trying to explain this to my mechanic (your video title explained it perfectly!) the other night and his 12 yr old son said it's the driveshaft!! Intelligent kid. How long can I drive with it like this before the repair? My mechanic said he can't do the repair for another 3 days. Thank you again. I subscribed and liked!

Glad to help! Driving this way will not hurt anything, just really annoying. Other possibility for a similar thumb comes from low trans fluid from people that do not know how to properly fill the so called "sealed transmission pan" or top it off.

I don’t have a Lexus or Toyota but my Hyundai 2019 Santa fe does THE EXACT same thing you described. I’m crossing my fingers because i don’t have the money to replace my transmission.

Is the new part number the same for 4runner and Lexus? At the Toyota delaership they have this part number but it’s saying it’s for 4runner. Is this still the new driveshaft to fix the issue?

Same PN for 4th gen 4runner 4wd and gx470.

I have the clunk in my 2004 GX470 (154k miles). Does it cause any damage if it goes unfixed? I doesn’t necessarily bother me, but I don’t want to let it go if it will cause any damage to the vehicle. Thanks!

I would check all of your u-joints and make sure all is tight and well greased. If the clunk is coming from the joints, you will have damage and a major problem at some point. If the clunk is coming from the slip - just irritating.

I occasionally have this jerk on my 04 gx470. It happens at idle. I can feel it through the brake with a loud clunk. Do I just need to tighten the bolts?

I would check them but likely not it. Are you in drive or park? When exactly does it happen?

I have an v8 04 4runner and it clunks when I come to a stop, shift into drive/reverse could this be the issue

It very well could be. Also, double check trans fluid levels.

Please help as i want to do this fix. 2006 v8 4runner 4x4 and the part is about $450 at the lexus dealer for the rear driveshaft. Is this normal price?

Check bell lexus, usually about $330-$350 shipped.

Is replacing the driveshaft the fix for the "GX460" as well?? I know the part number is going to be different by I am willing to do this. I have a 14 GX460 with 100k miles and my issue is more taking off from a dead stop then it is slowing down.

Driveshaft is already the updated part on the 460. If the ujoints are shot, may help. Any issue with a clunk in harder turns like say, a hard left at an intersection?

@MR_garage Gotcha......Thanks for that info. Alot of people with the GX report this same issue but no one has a clear answer to what could be causing it. It's more of a smooth bump type of feeling than a clunk. I dont get any clunks when turning either. It's only when coming to a stop or taking off that it does it.
