Another way to do a jump backwards one block in modern controls: Walk to the edge of the platform, get into 'look' mode then pull back on the LS. Keep LS pulled back then exit 'look' mode and she does a perfect jump backwards 1 block 🎉
@@loganfivesandmanThe only problem with that is I find you have to manually move the camera dead on behind Lara otherwise she might go off to the side. With the method I mentioned above, the look locks the camera behind her for you 😀
This would have been amazing. I tried modern controls and found all the mapping really weird. Plus then having a separate button for action and grab was just so awkward. Back to tank I went. Tbh, I think tank is better for the grid based system the game is built on anyway
Great idea but personally this would frustrate me as I prefer the tank controls but I find them infinitely easier with analogue sticks. I tried the modern and just couldn’t be doing with it lol but the sticks make moving much easier

I dunno, in Egypt when Lara is 300 feet in the air on a one tile cliff I personally like the tank controls because Lara won't just hurl herself off a ledge. I WANT her to be careful like her life depends on it.@@CJW0056
All of those issues could be remedied by having tank controls on d-pad and analog movement on the sticks. Or a toggle button you can hold to strafe and backstep. As is, the modern controls are a hassle. Most older players like myself will find the original tank controls to feel right at home but it would be nice to have better modern controls for people jumping on the original trilogy for the first time. I've seen a lot of new players playing the game and quitting or just not enjoying the games as much because they are fighting against the controls
The d-pad for tank is not a bad idea but you'd have two different control schemes fight each other, but I'm thinking for Lara to spin around (like rotate her literally like a tank) is kinda what you want when your hundreds of feet in the air in Egypt!
I really like this idea. People forget the original TR came out before analog sticks were invented for the controller so all we had was a Dpad. Since we now have two sets to work with they could implement it in this way.

Just completed TR1 with modern controls and I would recommend, when needing to do a running jump, to do the half tile jump trick. It has saved me so much frustration. Especially when the camera is having a moment.
OOOh! GREAT tip. Ok new players if you're reading this. If your in a situation where you don't have a full square tile to do a jump, start Lara off by walking then let go of walk and hold the jump button and as Lara begins to run she will immediately jump!
Noted I will indeed do that... I haven't played the game for 20 years, I even own the original PS1 game in the cover and the PS1 console and I got to tell you I'm incredibly out of practice 😅 I played TR1 last night and oh boy was I actually scare playing the game 🎮 it freaked me out when I was a kid and it still does now... No matter how good games get the classics will never decay.
A tip for doing a running jump easily. You can do a walking/running jump from half square. Basically hold the walk button, walk forward, release walking button and press jump, Lara will run one step and do a running jump
You CAN step back and sideways! - Back stepping: Hold the draw weapons button, wait for animation, tap backwards. OR Press Look key to toggle to look mode, hold back. While still holding back press look key to toggle it off. - Sidestepping: Press the Look key to toggle to look mode. While in it hold walk button + left or right. Keep holding them and press look key to toggle it off
@@TheHarrissonPereira sidestepping, yeah, maybe. But back stepping is very useful! It helps you get the perfect distance to do a running jump. It is tremendously useful during combat, as it allows you to move backwards while shooting at targets.
If I give modern controls a go again I'll definitely follow these tips. At the moment I'm sticking with Tank controls and using modern controls is just too frustrating

im glad someone else pointed it out. i figured out accidentally that by tapping look and backwards it allows you to hop backwards once for those specific jumps. which is why i button mapped it back to where its supposed to be. I do like the Modern controls over all. having been a veteran raider since her inception i can say i've adapted to them pretty well and arguably may prefer them? definitely threw my ass off for the first couple days of playing and there's definitely some things i would iron out with the modern control scheme like the camera being your biggest enemy of all. But when they work, they work well.
Im glad there's people like you who are helping teach the modern controls. Theres so many videos of people just making fun of the system because its so different in feel. But seeing how it actually works and how to truly understand it, it's so much more intuitive than some diehard fans make it out to be
Great video and cool advice. I like your idea of holding the trigger on XBOX one and allowing yourself to fall and she automatically holds onto the side, so you can use this as an alternative, due to not been able to jump back using the modern controls. And, also cool to know, you can hop back, if you have your guns pulled out. I've always preferred the Tank controls myself, as this is how I played Tomb Raider originally on the PC back in 1997, when others were moaning about the keys. But, I always preferred that way of controlling Lara and I adored how you could jump her side to side, as well and jumping forwards and backwards. And, that you could also roll, after running away, with your guns blazing. So, when Legend came out, it was a lot harder for me, to control Lara with the modern day controls. I kept crashing into things and finding the camera really annoying. But, I managed it somehow! LOL! It is funny playing it with the Tank controls on an XBOX One controller. So, I might need to practice. As, I like using the Modern controls on the XBOX One for the running around part, but obviously I prefer the Tank controls for the backstepping and jumping side to side. I'm also going to buy the games on PC again, too! I think it is great though; that they have remastered the original classic games. So, the new fans can see the difference in play and why people love Classic Lara. I think the new Lara Croft games are brilliant, but they made them a little easy for people to find things; and I felt that the classic Lara was more empowering for woman, as she kicked ass and couldn't be bribed; and always did the right thing. Although I do love every version of Lara. I think the new Lara became a bit too soft, when compared to this Classic Lara. Just my opinion though! A decent proposal solving two birds with one stone: Since RB isn't used, just make that the back step button for modern controls, and also have it reset the cam to right behind Lara so that the view is aligned and ready for the long jump. Alternate: if clicking the Left Stick in is not mapped to anything on default, then have clicking LS be Lara's back step.
I agree I agree! 👏 if tap backwards was assignable I would have made that R1. I also feel for new players the roll button doesn’t do what they want it to do especially since Lara can run backwards on modern controls: that could be tap backwards now!
Sure! Combat in TR is a platforming puzzle in disguise. Name of the game is to create as much distance between you and a foe, WHILE STILL shooting at the same time. That means swinging the camera behind Lara's back for a clear view. Lock on the target, hold the shoot button down and don't let go and just do some back flips and side flips. And honestly... with the 90s AI... "They are more afraid of you than you are of them" I promise. I've watched other videos on RU-vid of newcomers playing and to see people freak out over just 2 wolves... YOUR LARA CROFT REMEMBER! ;)
All these guys said and a side note: remember that modern controls orient Lara to where you're pushing the stick. Just don't push it too far away from them, since that will result in Lara showing her back to enemies. You can just tap the analogue back for small hops back, or you can use the jump and roll buttons to avoid enemies.
I have found it useful to do an extremely tight circle before a running jump. Kinda like running in a C shape, then into a J shape to then jump (the C and J shapes overlap). It takes a little practice to get it but once you nail it, it makes traversing tight areas very fast. Useful for speed running.
One trick I have found on modern controls is that if you run in a circle before jumping it counts as a run and jump. Really helpful for single square ledges
Bought the game a moment ago and it feels a little better to use the tank controls for me, I switched to modern and it felt so strange, I never played the original games and only memory I have of them is being a toddler and watching an older kid playing on their ps1 so this is all very new, its a real cool experience

5:00 actually there is a Tap Backwards on modern controls. All yiu have to do is hold LT or R2 this will equip your weapons. Then, tap backwards. Other than that, great video! I learned so much!
I grew up with these games there for the Tank controls are just second nature to me. I will like to add that the game was also designed using Tank controls, it’s the main reason why the game feels off using the modern controls.
I prefer tank controls but I'd love to give modern controls a try too. They need to fix the issue with the missing "tap back" function though. Just add one button to do that even in modern controls.
For the perfect small jump backward to do a run and jump you can also pull out the guns then LS back. Or walk to the opposite edge of where you want to run to, position the camera looking at the objective and press forward and jump.
Excellent guide! Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but by accident, on ps5, if you hold L2 and press back on the right stick she will step back on modern control fig.
For those kind of jumps at 5:20 what I've been doing is, run in circle 1 or 2 times and then do the jump, she manages to gather enough momentum to clear those 3 tile gaps that way too and it negates that delay he has when jumping from a run start.
You can back step and back/side flip with modern controls. Hold L2 or whatever the draw weapon button is and you can do it. I'm several months late and it might have been added after this video is made but you can definitely do it. Might be different in the mansion since you don't have guns but I haven't tried. Works in the actual game

I found out to step back last night while trying something else. So press R1 and you want to come back out of that view Press R1 and back and she will stepback.

Not sure if this has been pointed out, but if you set you camera to RB you can hit it and back at the same time and you can backwards jump. RB back together while standing and it works.

Also if you aim your guns and tap backwards you will do a leap backwards for perfectly lining up the long jumps, that’s what I did for most of the game
I get that many people struggle with the tank controls nowadays. Yes, they are clunky and old, but these games were designed around this movement method. As someone who occasionally played the older games every now and then, I don't have a problem with them. In fact, if you are trained with them, they are super precise. I tried using the modern controls for one level but failed so hard. From my experience: Tank controls for platforming / jumping, but modern controls for combat.
After trying for a while with the modern controls, I went back to tank mode. The combat also becomes very frustrating when you want to shoot while running backwards, since Lara looks at the camera and does not shoot at the enemies that are behind (plus everything you mention in the video). Very good advice anyway

An easy way to patch the jump backwards would be to allow Lara to jump backwards while holding the weapons draw button and tapping backwards on the control stick or d pad.
Thank you. I was toggling between the controls depending on the situation. I beat the original games with tank controls, but after a couple of decades away, they are awkward. I was bummed that it was looking like it was going to be a tedious constant switching back and forth.
Clicking the right analog stick to view your surroundings still makes sense, with the modern controls, since it's the default 'reset camera' button in most games.
I saw a lot of people's Lara get "bugged" in modern control and "freeze" in the early access footage because they pressed the stick in without realising it. So I'm recommending R1/RB.
Easiest fix: Get out of your comfort zone for a brief period of time, and take some time to learn and get used the classic controls. The game was very precisely designed around them. Anyone that grew up playing these games obsessively will tell you that once you get a feel for them you wouldn't want it any other way, they are legit great. Not simply "tolerable", but great.
Been using tank controls with the d-pad, took a bit of getting used to at first but by the end of the first level it's become quite natural and intuitive just like back in the PS1 days!

So much nostalgia when I booted this up for the first time yesterday. Absolutely loved the originals on PS1. An easy patch this game needs is pressing backwards on modern controls makes Lara step backwards. Having her turn and sprint is so annoying.
My biggest issue is trying to re-learn jumping. I've gotten so used to being able to jump and hit a direction at the same time to be able to jump in that direction...that I forgot that in order to jump forward or to the side you need to jump _and then_ chose a direction immediately afterward to leap in that direction. And on that note I can't even imagine how difficult it'll be to hit some of those timed secrets using analogue controls...
For backwards - Hold L2 on PS (weapon button) and try. But if you run with a weapon the chance of it happening is low, you have to be static and it works 100%
Thanks for the tips, I am a new player who has never played these games at all before and I was losing my mind trying to figure this stuff out. I didn't even know that the Manor was a training course, it's just an icon in the menu that I didn't know what it was. It took me a long time to even figure out right trigger grab.
I wish they fix the backwards step in the modern controls as well. Another way to do it (which actually only works with her weapons out) is to walk to the edge, draw her guns out, tap backwards, sheath her guns and do the jump
I find the modern controls way less clunky and awkward in general, but need to switch to the tank controls for things like making her do that jump back for the perfect running jump etc. Looking forward to this video as I definitely need help with exactly the issues you're describing! It took me like 4 levels to figure out [on the switch] that you need to press RZ to grab after jumping, not the action button or any others. Camera angles are a major pain in the pass, too. P.S. Off-Topic and maybe unwanted comment, but I love your accent! Irish accent has always been my favourite :)

Played this many many years ago on original PlayStation when I was very young, so I’m now used to modern controls and the frustration I’m getting from the camera using modern controls, I find myself switching between the two, when it’s a complex jumping sequence I’m swapping to tank and then back to modern 😅 we need the option to tap backwards and also spin in place maybe a button that if you hold it, you can turn in place and strafe backwards
To fix the problems with the modern controls... Just don't use them! Tank controls are the way the game was designed to be played around. All the maps, jumps and puzzles were created with the grid system in mind. Using modern controls will only make the game more difficult than it should have been. Same as with having no hints/indicators of what is or isn't intractable. Ok, it makes it easier in some situations, but part of the fun of this games is to be able to figure a puzzle out by yourself! TR2 was my very first game, on my very first PC, way back in 97. I can't tell you guys how much playing that game moulded my exploration mindset, and prepared me for games to come in the future. Secret areas or stuff in other games become easier to find, after finishing all TR games as a tennager.
I feel it should be mentioned alongside newcomers & those out of practice that these are great tips for those of us who have to use modern controls because we CAN"T use tank controls ( seriously, in the almost 30 years tank controls have been a thing I have never been able to use them with the sole exception being Grim Fandango Remastered as it doesn't really have any major action or platforming....and it was STILL too awkward for me ).
Whilst they have some issues, I'm glad they added in modern-style controls for these remaster for those Tomb Raider fans who first played and grew up with Crystal Dynamic's original pre-survivor trilogy (myself included), the tank controls made it hard for me to get into the OG Core Design games.
It is really worth mentioning how to operate the speedboat in TR2: - Left trigger to go forward (Easy to figure) - Right trigger to go backwards (Easy to figure) - Main action button allows to hop in the boat (Not intuitive at all !) - Roll button + left/right to jump out of the boat (I would have never guessed it) - Jump button gives a (very needed) boost while pressing trigger button (It was a hell to find that info) The “Venice” level in Tomb Raider II is impossible without that very important information

I noticed that while using modern controls you actually can do the jump back feature however you have to have your weapons drawn try holding the left trigger ( L2 ) which will pull out your weapons and then jump back real quick with down either on the D-pad or the left stick then let go of the left trigger ( L2 ) to put away your weapons and there you go
It's funny how all I really wanted was modern controls (since the tank ones hurt a lot more than they used to) and I still find myself switching back to tank controls! Thanks for this video. I hope they add in some way to keep the directional jumps to make some of the levels easier. Fingers crossed we can get some hybrid controls. Like if I jump with the D-pad versus using the sticks.
Tank controls are the only way, it informs how Lara should move and is part and parcel of the level design. The tips are great though I agree, use the look button, use the walk button. The best tip with enemies is don't let them scare you, the biggest threat they pose is making you anxious and then jump somewhere where you will die (I was just playing level 5 and for fun thought I wouldn't kill anything just to see if the Lions would get Pierre but they all ignore each other!). It's worth knowing that she auto aims and you need to let go of fire to allow her to acquire a new target.
Actually as a big tank classic control fan the biggest issue I'm having is the look button used to allow you to switch targets, doesn't seem to anymore!
@@LeesPlay that's interesting I didn't notice, I did have one nerdy quirk though, the 2nd secret on caves where you have to stand on the snowy side, I always remembered having to do that as jump then action to grab and I almost thought it was a bug until forward and action allowed me to climb up there! It's awesome though overall, I love the modern visual upgrade.
In case someone else hasn’t comment this, a very easy way to jump backwards using modern controls (which you can’t actually do whilst at Croft manor), is to hold left trigger (draw guns) and then hit backward and she’ll do that single jump backwards. The let go of left trigger.
@@LeesPlay no spoilers have been given.. :-S. Croft manor isn’t a level in the truest sense in the first place, but a separate practice zone. And as soon as you hit the first actual level - well hey presto - you have the pistols. Holding aim (LT) and tapping back gives the exact single jump back you would otherwise get with the tank controls. Works like a dream ;-). No spoilers given! To clarify, holding X, walk to the edge. Let go of x. Next hold LT, tap back (Lara will do her single jump back), let go of LT. Then do your run-up jump.
Tank controls are the only way to play the game (feel perfect like they used to), the game is designed to either single jump, or 1 jump back run and jump, there are no jumps which can’t be made from a single run and jump (maps are made up of mesh blocks), never had a problem with tank controls but maybe newer players prefer modern controls so nice addition 🎉
That's ok. Please don't lose the habit when you get to Egypt. You'll be hundreds of feet in the air and flying monsters trying to knock you off a ledge!
Another tip is that Lara can do a diagonal or curved jump. That's how some Tomb Raider players can run and jump on a half-square or half-slopes that make jumping difficult. Diagonal jumps use the same mechanics as a regular jump, just diagonal. To do a curved jump, make Lara run left or right from where you're aiming, then make her turn to where you want her to jump. She'll successfully run and jump if you don't break her run.

The lack of a proper tutorial for it does not help at all. You can actually do EVERYTHING you do with tank controls. The problem with guns is it won’t work in SOME levels without causing spoilers and THOSE levels are platform focused. I want new players to learn the sustainable techniques now! 🤗
@@LeesPlay Really? Well, I don't think it is. I think is fully intentional. Because Lara turns and moves in any direction freely this was a way they found to implement back and side stepping without needing the guns. I don't think modern controls need any patching at all! Everything works really well, just takes time getting used to. The only problem is the camera indoors sometimes.
backstep guide 1. draw weapons 2. pull joystick backward 3. hide weapons 4. just push forwards and jump (ignore camera if stuck behind lara, up joystick is forward)

I discovered that you can back step with no guns, you need to press the look button, keep pressing the down directional button, and press the look button, R1,down,R1.(Sorry for my English)
Great tips thanks. Moving camera look from R3 is a godsend as I kept pressing the stick in by mistake when looking during combat. Having L1 to step back would be amazing so lets hope they add this
If They add the tap backwards, I'd tbh make that the R1 of this video... OR honestly lose the roll move. New players want the roll to be like a modern AAA dodge and on modern controls she can move 180 instantly by turning her... IMO.
In my opinion all they need to do is keep the tank controls on the Dpad while modern controls are active (similar to how the remaster of REmake did it). That way you can go back and forth easily without much finagling.
ITank movement using D-pad and modern movement using joystick is the solution for the modern controls limitation. We should suggest to Aspyr adding this option.
Thanks for the really helpful tips! I could never beat the first or second game way back then because of how frustrating the controls and camera could get on PC playing with the mouse and keyboard. I knew the basics: walk to the edge, then roll or hop back, then make your running jump. But the camera kept getting in the way and if you're not perfectly aligned, splat she goes. If I had thought of resetting the camera and keeping the grab button held down as you suggested, the games would have been a little less frustrating.
It says press the "action button" to grab the ledge, and the modern control "action button" by default is listed as Y/∆. Which doesn't work. It was right trigger as you established but I never worked that out and played Peru on tank controls lol
I think it was a bad idea in modern controls to have two buttons for interact. I think they should have kept it all right trigger or all Y. Obviously influenced by modern games that behave like this but TR has a simple are her hands busy or not. Anyway Tank all the way! An All Secrets Pistol Only Tank Playthrough coming V soon.
