Fix Pressure Washer Unloader Valve in 2 Minutes

If your pressure washer is not building pressure (and the engine is surging), there could be a few different causes. One of them is a sticking unloader valve.
Here we show you how to make sure the unloader valve on your home pressure washer is clean in just 2 minutes.
If this does not fix your pressure washer and make it build pressure again, then it is likely a water pump problem. We tackle that next time.

@@HNXMedia I took it out and the pin works perfectly fine. I even cleaned the little holes on the side. It's still doing the same thing. I notice though, the unit won't stall out if I take the gun off and just let water run through it. I put the gun back on and hold down trigger, unit it ok. Let go of trigger, pump sounds like metal noises before stalling out. I wonder if something on the inside of pump broke
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia 3 года назад
@@ShyRage1 That could very well be it too. Replacing a pump is super easy and on most unit only cost about $80. I had one that was completely shredded on the inside. Check out this video here for How easy it is to swap out a pump: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Np9c0MLnUv8.html

@@HNXMedia after watching your other video I saw that the pump itself also has a timing key 🗝️. I wonder if this is what broke in it and if that what I'm hearing. Also, if this could be why I'm having that issue

@@HNXMedia I ended up taking the pump off and apart. I cant get to the center of the pump for some reason but I found out if I shake it, It sounds like loose bearings. I'd say the pump is shot, your thoughts? Now, how do you disconnect the line going into the pump? On mine, it's not as simple as just unscrewing like a water hose.

@@tomcollier4089 Sounds about right. The "system" in a pressure washer is ridiculously "balanced." Perfect how-to video. Question: my pressure washer runs fine while the trigger is squeezed. But when released, the motor pulsates, and it sounds as though the pump keeps kicking on, then off. I suspect some sort of pressure valve is not staying released and allowing the motor to run freely. Could this valve be the culprit?

@Michael Fresh Just replace the entire pump. The new pump will come with a new unloader. It is actually cheaper to buy a complete pump than just a single unloader valve. Find the model number and grab a matching pump off Amazon or just about anywhere. I replaced one for about $80: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Np9c0MLnUv8.html

If you are referring to the large screw in part next to the unloader valve, it is typically the connection that runs out to the wand (at least it is on mine). If it is something else, take a pic and email it to our contact email address on our about page. I'll take a look at it and help if I can.

What's the symptoms of this needing attention? I left my petrol pressure washer running for about 10 mins without spraying. It's got no pressure/ water just squirts a little when trigger is pulled. Help/advice appreciated.
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia 6 лет назад
Unloader valve issue is usually defined by a "surging" issue, where the pressure washer surges and then won't build pressure or the water will just trickle or squirt out the end of the wand. What you have sounds like a classic unloader valve "sticking" issue. Cleaning it should fix the problem. However, it could be that the entire pump is bad. The good news is, you can replace most pumps on most brands of pressure washer for around $80 (and you get a new unloader on the new pump anyway). Hope that helps, let me know.

Typically the only thing holding them in is that "U" shaped clip and friction. Once you pry out the "U" clip you should be able to side a flat screw driver into the "spring rings" and just kind of slowly pry it out. I am unfortunately not familiar with any models that are more difficult that that. They are all typically set up the same way. Note that some can be "hidden" under rubber caps that may need to be removed. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. Great video, but when you mentioned put a little bit of grease on the O-Rings, you should have mentioned that you should be using a SILICONE BASED grease, NOT a Petroleum based automotive grease. (Any swimming pool owner is familiar with Silicone based O-Ring lube / Jack’s Lube is just one common brand.) Petroleum based grease will swell rubber O-Rings and will typically make an old dry O-Ring seal in a pinch, BUT it will make it much more difficult to remove the unloader when (not if) you have to clean it again.

Old video but info still very useful to me. I always put my power equipment away properly for the winter. BUT... this spring my pressure washer would only build pressure for a few seconds, then engine would obviously not be under a load. Thanks much for the short, concise video. Just what I needed. And yes, I know. My comment was longer than the video.

@@HNXMedia An admirable quality sir! If I could ask a brief follow-up q, I've followed this vid on my Nilfisk Alto, it runs, starts & stops on the trigger & main switch, water comes out of the lance but with no pressure at all, lance & hose are clear of debris / calcium, no visible water loss within the unit or from the main body - where would you look next pls?
@HNXMedia
@HNXMedia Год назад
@@gavva2010 It sounds like the pump is not building pressure. I have had to replace/repair my pump twice. The internal valves are often plastic and they corrode/crack. If the unloader has completely failed beyond being able to be cleaned, it is often cheaper to replace an entire pump than just individual parts - and they are super easy, usually just a couple bolts. I replace a pump in this video: How To Replace Pressure Washer Water Pump (Part 2) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Np9c0MLnUv8.html

@@HNXMedia I checked the unloader according to your excellent vid, hoping it was gonna be stuck, but nope - it was fine. So I cleared the little hole with a pin, greased the o-rings, & reinstalled. I'll try the valves next, motor is fine & the machine *does* allow water to flow through, just with no pressure at all. We had a pretty cold spell a few weeks back, hope it's not cracked.

@@gavva2010 That's the way I lost my first pump. It was in the garage but too close to the garage door during a hard freeze. The water remaining in the pump cracked the metal.

Thank you thank you thank you. I can’t stand the goddamn intros to RU-vid videos as if they are a network television show. I never comment on videos but this is how a RU-vid diy/know how/or fix it video should be.

Direct and to-the-point Thanks! My other pump was under warranty so I got a new one. So I'm going to check the unloader valve on the old one and if that's the problem I'll definitely reinstall it and see if that was the fix thanks again.

You and me both. I figure that if people are looking to fix something, they don't need a history lesson, they just need the cold hard facts. I don't like my time wasted and I don't like wasting other peoples' time either. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave an awesome comment! Time to get back to work.
