I just want to say I don't even have the printer in this video (I have an HP Photosmart C6280 All-In-One) but had this same problem, and the steps worked! Cleaned up those rollers with a moist cloth and q-tip, and it's finally picking up the paper again. Thank you for making this video HP.
HP used to offer a pick-up-roller fix for the old DeskJet printers, when the main paper pickup rollers could not be improved by wiping. Soft rubber hardens with time, and the surface becomes too slick to grab paper, no matter how much you clean it. The fix was a sheet of cardboard with two or three tiny squares of medium sandpaper glued on the spots where the rollers would try to grab the sheet. When this fix sheet was placed in the paper tray and the rollers tried to grab the sheet, the rollers were sanded down, exposing the softer rubber under the hard, slick 'skin' which had developed from much use. A few sandings later and the rollers were soft a 'grabby' again. I use this technique for the ADF as well, because the principle is the same. You sand off the outer, hard, smooth rubber - you don't have to sand much - then wipe clean. You can feel the difference with you finger.
I have since learned of rubber conditioners, a liquid that replaces the plasticizers that gas out of rubber and make it hard. You wipe the liquid on the roller, let dry and they are reported to be 'like new' and grippy, without sanding.
marjamada this worked for me too... at least for now. i removed the paper tray, tilted the printer upward, and using 100 grit sandpaper I had laying around, I lightly sanded the single large gray rubber roller you can see from underneath. The rubber goes only about 3/4 the way around the shaft. Then I removed the duplexer in back and lightly sanded the 4 smaller gray rubber rollers. Once I put the duplexer and paper tray back on everything seems to be working as normal. Hope it lasts a while!
You rock. I looked at your video. I used cotton sticks with water and it worked. I thought I need to buy a new printer (my printer worked really good and today it could not pick up paper). Thank you very much.
Your directions are very clear. Best Ive seen. Went thru steps and paper still jams in back I may not have done the cleaning well enough and can try that one more time Feeling quite frustrated. Thanks for being there
Thank you for the positive feedback on the video! Since at the time of writing you were still experiencing a paper jam in the back of the printer, I would focus your efforts there. Take off the duplexer, open it and clean the rollers and look for any debris, clean the rollers in the back and then inspect the full paper path for any obstructions of any kind. It could be bits of paper, however small , and could be hard to see if they became soaked in ink. It could be bits of plastic or other debris. Some common culprits are paper clips, staples, thumb tacks. Also be sure that when you put a part back, like the duplexer it is snapped back into place properly. If one side is not properly snapped into place you will get paper jams.
HP tech support took me through these steps at least five or six times before they agreed to exchange the printer for a new or refurbished one only 6 weeks before warranty was to expire. If under warranty call, call, call.
Purchased my 8600 in 2012 using for my office in insurance sales. I've only replaced the printer head one or two years ago.Its been pretty reliable. Having the paper feed issue only now in 2019. Going to give this a try
While trying the first fix on the video, it occurred to me to pull the paper tray all the way out, bend down and peer in there. Sure enough, a paper jam. I gently pulled it out. Good to go again. Thanks for the helpful video, too, in case I have a different problem.
+Elizabeth McKinney Thanks for sharing your experience; although it has left you less than satisfied we appreciate your feedback. I'm glad to hear you resolved the paper jam!
I have a HP Officejet Pro 8610 and just figured out how to get it to load HP Advanced Photo Paper. After cleaning all of the rollers I ended up taking out all but ~5 sheets of paper and it loaded up fine. I don't understand it but everything worked for multiple prints so I'm going with it. But, seriously HP, get it together, when your printer can't load YOUR paper, there are problems.
I struggled with my last HP all in one with the upper roller feed not feeding when copying. This one suffers from the pick motor only picking up the paper sporadically. UGH!! I am so done with HP. My office hours are not meant to be working on printers!! All the HP suggestions have NOT WORKED. I did find my own work-around solution though. With the 8600 , the only way I get around the pick motor funkiness is to try to fool it. I switch the paper trays from top to bottom... then when the bottom fails to pick & says out of paper, I pull it out and put it in the top tray, which it seems to work ( for a while). It works to just push in the tray thats is loaded there as well. But I do this repeatly & it's driving me batty!!!!!!
I use a printer from 2007, that i use everyday for work, its soo old limited stores carry the cartridge. my job is labour intensive work for a printer. first time in 10 years i have had a problem with my HP. and cleaning fixed it, and it works just fine. THANKS HP
Referring to the happenings around 10:00 minutes in this video: You disconnect the power cord while the printer is on. I get this. Then you disconnect the power cord from mains. Then you wait 15 seconds. Then you re-connect the power cord to mains. Then you reconnect power cord to printer and so on. My question is what difference can it possibly make to dis- and re-connect the cord from mains after the printer is disconnected from cord already! ?
Ashka Sloka The reason for disconnecting the power cord from the printer and from the wall is so a proper energy drain can occur. HP Envy 5644, read the manual, tried everything. Even with brand new paper and dust blown out, it doesn't detect paper and just makes a whirring sound before displaying "Insert paper in paper tray"
Hi there, thanks for contacting! I understand that you are experiencing an out of paper error on your printer. I will do my best to assist you. Please refer to the instructions mentioned under this document to fix the issue: bit.ly/3dLxtya Binu - Social Media Tech Support
Sanpaper Method As for the sandpaper method -- I have seen multiple factory trained techs lightly sand the pick motor roller and restore the paper pickup issues in less than 5 minutes. Materials age with time. HP should have used less cheap material for their pick roilers which take longer to dry out. They are out there. Cost saving measure. Tray spring Not sure why this video ignores checking if the spring-loaded base plate in the bottom of each tray is raising to the full upright location. If this does not happen, the paper is not placed close enough to the pick wheel to get grabbed. I see this potentially being a problem with the heavier weight everyday papers. Photo paper: Seems sanding is the logical option, as the back of that paper is extremely smooth. Fight the urge to spray the inside of the printer with a can of air duster -- you just spread the mess all over the innards of the printer which will likely lead to other problems. Vacuum it out. They make tiny attachments for regular vacs. They are also great if you are OCD about cleaning the interior of your car ------- The majority of mechanical devices require maintenance to continue maximized uptime. Cleaning with water will help the gently used pick wheels. A light sanding takes care of the issue in 5 minutes for heavy use printers. HP likely won't sanction that because people will go overboard and trash the rollers so badly they won't touch the paper anymore, and then you're stuck with a useless printer and they don't want to be on the hook for replacement. Also -- if you check closely, most everyday printer paper has a smooth side and a rougher side as compared to the smooth side. Place the rougher side of the paper face UP in an 8600 tray to give the pick roller more to grab onto (texture wise).
Wow, my no paper pick up issue was that my tray was adjusted for the larger height paper. And it was this way for years. FML but you know what? I solved a problem today!
12:28 "If you've tried all these options and the printer is still not working properly, thats because you bought another shit product from HP. Please call our even poorer customer service to waste even more of your valuable time. After this, please go to your nearest retailer and buy a printer that is in no way affiliated with HP."
HP Printer Support I have an hp photosmart 7510 that will not feed paper through still. I did lift one sheet as shown in another video and viola it did print. Obviously I did not purchase my printer to inconveniently hand feed paper. Is there a fix for this?
+Patricia Coomer this is an automated process and I know it is inconvenient to manually feed paper. However, this can be fixed by following the steps in this document: hp.care/2vj0UNg and if the issue persists after following the troubleshooting steps please contact the HP Phone Support using this link: hp.care/2oEj8Fb
+Lynne Mackin Please follow the steps in the ";HP Officejet Pro 8600 Printers - An 'Out of Paper' or 'Pick Motor Stalled' Displays" document ( ow.ly/WqPWI ). I know that you have already completed some of these steps, but please redo them as you follow the document. Please let me know the results. I've also included the link to the Officejet 8600 Series User Guide ( ow.ly/WqQGT ). It explains how to load the different types of papers, such as photo paper and has other good information.
So these tricks didn't work. I tried to print a page with the duplexer off so I could look in the back and see if anything was happening. When I did, I saw the little rollers were spinning for all their worth, but the big roller ("this is the most important step, as this roller picks up the paper") wasn't moving an iota. Is there a way I can kick that roller back into gear?
I have owned Officejet Pro8100 for 4 months now and still can not print on HP everyday photo paper. I purchased for my business as the name Pro implies profeesional, so I thought that I had made a good choice. Lots and loys of other people have the same issues. What is the practical solution?
+crptsrvcs To better assist you, would you please provide some additional information? - Are you getting any error messages? If yes, what do they say and where are they displayed (computer or printer)? - How is the printer connected (USB cable, Ethernet cable, or wireless)? - Are you loading the photo paper in tray 1 or tray 2 (if it is installed)? Thank you.
My printer will print reports manually from the actual device, but it will not print from my computer. My computer is telling me that my printer paper needs to be filled, but it is already full and in-lined. Ive already reset the system and I dont know what else to do.

Our Officejet pro 8600 kicks paper into the right side of the printer and then the print head jams it up into a ball inside the printer. What would cause this?
Hi. It sounds like there is a small piece of debris (paper, staple, pen, chicken wing, etc) inside the printer that is interfering with the paper path. Please search for C02915719 on HP's home page or using Google search. It is the document with detailed trouble shooting steps to take when you get a Paper Jam message on the front panel of the printer.
Officejet Pro 8610 I'm getting an error message and auto feed stops paper 3/4 of the way inside. "scanner auto document feeder is open. Check the ADF cover to be sure it is completely closed. "I'm not able to use auto feeder to make multiple pages of copies or scan multiple pages. Various trouble shooting procedures have been unsuccessful. Can you help HP ?
+dtowndano I see you have posted essentially the same message on a different video board, so I will put the same advice in here as well. Try out his document - An ADF Paper Jam Error Displays on the HP Officejet Pro 8610, 8620, 8630, 8640, and 8660 e-All-in-One Printer Series ( ow.ly/ZUvvj ) and let me know the results.
+HP Printer Support I already tried these procedures. It's not an paper jam error I'm receiving but rather "ADF feeder is open. Check the ADF cover so its completely closed". Problem still unresolved unfortunately. My printer was purchased in Jan. 2015.
+dtowndano If the issue is not resolved, I suggest that you contact HP Technical Support to determine what options are available to you. To find the Technical Support number for your country/region, please use this link below. www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html
+Sandip Kakade Paper jams can be real or false. The printer might report a paper jam even when there is no jammed paper. Please try these steps: hp.care/2sfwVHA
+wanda durham Please let me know the model number of your printer and the exact error message you are receiving so that I can check the details for you.
So now this is becoming more of an issue because i'm wasting money both on Ink and Photo Paper - 3 separate times printing an 8x10 photo, the beginning, most of the middle and nearly to the end of the photo is perfect... then the last quarter to half of an inch just appears all pixelated like the rollers just gave the heck up! I know this particular printer got a lot of bad press when it came out because of paper feed tray (which BTW still is messing up on your OWN PHOTO PAPER HP!!!) even after cleaning it barely takes the paper after the 3rd attempt and hitting "OK" now a whole new issue... apart from taking the whole thing apart and cleaning everything back to factory spec, i'm highly disappointed!.

+Lordthe vlogger If the printer does not pick up or feed paper from the tray, and an 'Out of Paper' or 'Pick Motor Stalled' error message displays on the printer control panel, the steps in this document should help you fix this issue: bitly.com/2UAuFWb
+ Joyce Weaver Use this link: bit.ly/2AWPWPX to resolve the paper feed issue. If the issue persists, please contact HP Phone Support: www.hp.com/contacthp for further assistance.
Do you think if you have had to make this video and had nearly 4000 visits that there is an issue with your printer not loading paper??? My printer is not even 2 months old and now is wasting far too much of my precious time trying to print my work, sure it prints the report in the set up just fine but it still can't print from my computer as it thinks its out of paper! Please respect my hard earned printer spend, and my time by producing a better product...just how many times should I reset it?
+diane levenson I understand the print carriage cannot move or it's stalled. Open the ink cartridge access door, clear any paper jam or obstruction, and select OK. For further troubleshooting follow the article in order to resolve the issue: hp.care/2sy8vq2
I am not sure if you have any questions or concerns please visit the lockouts page and the other day and I will be a good time to get it to be able to get back RT development and all of the day I have a nice day best you are doing well as my application to you and I have to be a problem for me know when I was thinking
This printer is rubbish. Unboxed it about 20 minutes ago and it won't load paper even after a tonne of troubleshooting. Despite the good reivews I think this printer suffers from a bad mechanical design. Will be returning it tomorrow and looking at something non-HP.
How to fix paper not feeding in HP8600. Drop kick into neighbors yard. Proceed to Best Buy (or whatever). Buy a different brand but not an HP. Problem solved.
+1cyberrider I understand your printer does not pick up or feed paper from the paper input tray or ADF. Paper feed issues might result from using ripped, dusty, curled, wrinkled, or bent paper. The procedures in this the document should help you resolve the issue: hp.care/2qZDug9
+1cyberrider as the troubleshooting steps did not help in resolving the issue, I suggest you contact the HP phone support: hp.care/2oEj8Fb for further assistance.
+Tania Phefo I understand your printer has been auditioning for a role in a Star Wars movie as it's making noises like Chewbacca. : ) Surprised I have a few ideas in mind that might help tone the noise down.Click this guide and try cleaning the rollers and updating the Firmware: An 'Out of Paper' or 'Pick Motor Stalled' Message Displays, and the Printer Does Not Pick Up or Feed: hp.care/2i0diem
