Wow! That is how important it is to know how these things work. Just a bad conccector or a loose cable can make you throw away a good shifter. Congratulations! Very good!
It's you attitude towards objects (that can be repaired if you would spend a bit of time to research, ask or try out) that makes you thorw away a good shifter.
The best tutorial I've ever seen on yt, my shifter was totaly broken, the gears skipped all over the world - tbh I lost hope it might work, but with this tutorial I made it works again, thanks!
You are a legend! I opened my shifter to clean it as I always do but this time the Reverse stopped working. Your tutorial helped me to fix it. Thank you so much
5:20 The biggest point of failure, in my opinion, is those 2 little green half-sphere pieces of plastic sticking out of the triangular portion. They are meant to hold the potentiometer in place, to keep it from moving side to side, but as you can see, the material is very fragile and not very rigid as there is empty space between the 2 green half-spheres. When the shifter is fully assembled, those little green ball things are the only thing making sure that the gears are properly detected horizontally, because the little green ball things are preventing the whole potentiometer from moving side to side, as the little green ball things are forked in between the white plastic housing below them. They're gonna break off, obviously, and also if their entire purpose is to keep the potentiometer upright by creating a point of contact to the white housing, why wouldn't Logitech just actually attach that part of the potentiometer to the white housing in a more robust way? For example, screw it down? and why is there empty space between the little green ball things? there could be more material there, and it could be designed stronger, clearly... such fragile design
big true, i say to myself, and so I watched this tutorial because I have a G27 shifter. I'm actually looking for a disassembly of a G29 to see if Logitech learned anything and improved their design, cause I am not gonna buy another G27 after owning one and knowing its failures. However, this video is also a G27, so I'll keep searching for a G29 internals.
yes the plugs are a bad idea, i fixed mine using a plastic sheath to increase tension on the plug to keep it tight, it worked flawlessly for years, now suddenly it's happening again and repeating my process hasn't helped, instead i've now lost reverse, this is a great tear down video, i was reluctant to take out the actual stick and plates from the unit, but now i've seen this it makes it a lot easier
Thanks! This was super helpful, the little green ball on the potentiometer had collapsed on mine which caused the 5th gear to be activated really inconsistently. I swapped the two potentiometers, since the other axis is being held in place differently, so it was "brand new".
Amazing how-to! Very professional and some key tips and techniques. I just got a used G25 and the reverse wasn't working, it just kept thinking it's in 6th gear. So I took the shifter apart, did the ball tension mod, also did the o-ring on the shift rod mod as well as all new grease everywhere. I used contact cleaner for the electronic bits and when measuring resistance between both terminals on the reverse PCB, there wasn't anything (open circuit). Clearly that's the problem, right? I soldered a short wire between both points and now it does read normal resistance, however after putting everything back, I still have no reverse gear! I really can't think of what else could be the problem.
Wow, you did quite the restoration! Congrats. The o-ring mod was the one to press the PCB reverse button? How big is that o-ring? The button may be just entering the center part of the o-ring if it’s too big/wide... if that’s not it, I don’t really know what it could be
@@RacingLegendss I fixed it today for good! So it turns out you can remove the plastic cap(button) on top of the Reverse trigger sensor on the PCV. There is a rubber grommet underneath and a very thin plastic spring which, when the button is pressed (by pushing down on the lever), it forces the metal spring to make contact with both pins and thus you get a signal for reverse. I carefully bent the spring slightly (just like bending the spring on a logitech mouse button switch) and added a tiny bit of copper wire to add as extra filling. Now it works great.
My gosh you’re almost an electrical engineer with those skills! :) Is seems it’s a bit different in the g27 one: there is no spring, just the rubber button and some kind of conductor/resistive pad. Well, congrats on the fix! I thought I fixed mine for good many times but problems always seem to sneak their way back into my shifter hahahaha I hope it doesn’t happen to yours ^^
Thanks so much. Don't know why when you pay so much for a product, it doesn't work properly. I've had problems with the wheels and shifter for years. Never knew how to fix the shifter until now
Wow thank you. Was about to go buy a new one because gears would constantly pop into neutral. Cleaned all the ports and reassembled now working as normal.
Hey, i have the same exact problem, all the gears pop into neutral. Can you tell me what you did specifically, or did you just follow the exact same steps as shown in the video?
Thank you for this beautiful video!. It helped me to understand more about the shifter, and showed me that is a complex equipment: if I unscrew and dissasemble it, there's nothing simple, and I'll be breaking more than repairing. Last week my shifter failed constantly, and 3rd and 5th gears didn't "get in" (at Dirt Rally 2.0 game, blewing up (more) my times haha). Seeing this vid, and noticing the complexity of the pheripherical, I only limited myself to spray compressed air inside it. Then I closed and screw all and I tested the shifter in Asetto Corsa instead Dirt Rally 2.0. I don't know if was a "game trouble", a communication failure between the shifter and the wheel, a Steam update that I didn't notice, or if the air "moved" something in, but the trouble dissapeared! :O . Cheers from Argentina and sorry for my bad english writing.
Hello, my shifter when downshifting fast from 3rd to 2nd it detects it as 4th When downshifting slowly it becomes normal Is that hardware issue or just needs cleaning or so I opened up mine and saw that it has hot glue on the potentiometer that's behind the stick so it's not a loose wire It does detect all gears but sometimes it chooses the wrong gear
Currently repairing as I type (UPDATE 22/02/26 at bottom) I've built my PC, I've tinkered with model cars, I've worked with small pieces But F You Logitech for selling $70 worth of hardware that wears out in about 2 weeks of active use (owned and cared for for 3 years, but use adding maybe 2 weeks of use total due to difficulties) And man this makes me want to tear my hair out But this video is very well explained! And is keeping my sanity in check But man these small parts are difficult 10/10 Video, but 3/10 Product from Logitech UPDATE: Shifter is back together, it was a loose connector on the reverse button UPDATE 2022/02/26: Reverse stopped working again, most likely from the horrible connector for the reverse thing. they should have made it a different way
My shifter isn't getting detected at all. I've tried on two systems and three OS's (Windows 10, Windows 11 and Linux). Maybe it's my wheel? Not sure. I've taken the shifter apart and it all seems fine, the last thing I done before it stopped working was unplugging it and updating Windows 10 (now on windows 11).
@@limited3502 My issue was the gears were not in order. First was third and so on... I just figured taking it apart seeing if there was obvious flaws would help. I decided to put it back together and test and it worked.
I have a question guys, I need those potantiometer in shifter. I couldn't find them. In my shifter, one of these pots is broken. I need to find it. Please help me.
Thank you for posting this video. My reverse gear is not detected. When I test for continuity, my reading goes down to 0. Since your video shows that it still has a value, do you have another suggestion when 0 is shown?
It depends... if you’re taking the reading from the PCB itself, unfortunately the metal has been discontinued or scraped off at some point in the printed circuit. If you’re reading from the connector, maybe it has a bad wire/metal that connects it to the pcb. In any case, maybe your silicone button is the problem and you could substitute it with anther one and see if closes the circuit again
I BROKE MY BOARD ON THE BOTTOM.. SO I HAD TO JIMMY RIG MY SHIFTER BASICALLY.. I TOOK THE WIRE THAT DETECTS WETHER THE BUTTON IS PRESSED AND SOLDERED ONE SIDE TO THE SHIFTER ITSELF THE METAL SHIFTER POLE. AND THEN A PIECE OF METAL I PUT AT HE BOTTOM AND USED A GLUE GUN AND GLUED THE METAL PIECE ATTACHED TO THE OTHER WIRE ON THE BOTTOM.. AND NOW WHEN I PRESS DOWN THE METAL SHIFTER TOUCHES THE METAL PIECE UNDERNEATH. AND BOOM INTO REVERSE IT GOES WHEN PRESSING DOWN AND PUTTING INTO 6TH LOL.
where do you find the replacement potentiometers i lost the little metal pin thing in one of mine unless you dont need it i would really like some info thanks :D
I just bought a shifter, a driving force one and when i put first or third it detects the same thing and with second and fourth the same thing can i do something?
my shifter barely works, i put first it goes neutral-first-neutral-first-neutral back and forth, same with other gears. or sometimes doesn't even let me shift into gear. the only gear working correctly is 2nd
Racing Legends, good tutorial. I riped out my G25 shifter potentiometer, and i'm looking for a replacement potentiometer, unfortunatly it's not easy to find. If you know about potentiometers, could you tell me what the numbers on it mean? for example on the front it says : 10 3A 76 1N thank you
Really nice video!! I bought mine really cheap and it came with the sequential part not working. The manual shifter works just fine but when I turn the knob to the sequential side, no light comes on and I feel like there’s nothing conected to the knob...could you make a video of how this mechanism works? I would like to make mine work again, as I feel the previous owner took it out somehow. Thanks!
It’s likely just a loose connection, you could try opening it carefully and looking for either that or a dirty knob. I don’t have access to that version of this shifter, though :)
had a problem where it would go to 2nd gear each time i shifted neutral to the left, nothing else did anything, didnt have a screwdriver then i decided to clobber it a couple times and it started working again lol
So when I upshift from 3rd to 4th, 4th gear will sometimes turn to 2nd gear and then 5th will turn into 3rd. Is that what you cover on how to fix here?
Now add a 4mm plug into the spring hole as a spacer giving the spring more preload, and grease the 3 bearing slot holes with silicone grease, then grease the pins that grab the side plates, assemble, when finished it's better then new.
Hi. I Have a G25 shifter which is amazing, but I'm noticing an issue when upshifting in sequential mode where it will take maybe 2 pulls to go up a gear. I have had this issue in Dirt Rally 2.0. Dirt Rally and even tried it on the PS2 with Gran Turismo 3 to verify it. Do you think its an issue that can be solved?
Mine has that problem too, I suggest fixing that to the white mechanism with something (string, hot glue, 2 part moldable bit of matter that dries hard and idk the name of...) so that it holds the pot in place while the inner mechanism can rotate it...
@@RacingLegendss Very big Thanks for the help dude! But I've just converted my shifter into a sequential gear. Because i know that the fix will not hold for a long time tho. i'll buy a new one soon
It's likely the bottom most button in a little PCB I showed in the vid, just clean that up real nice and maybe extend the rod in like a milimeter and it should work if the PCB connector is good and clean
the ball instead of keeping over the edge of the white cylinder, it went through it and its stuck, im typing with my elbows as i have my hands full of grease
hey.. i have a problem when i shift to 1st it goes to 3 and when I shift to 2nd it goes to 4 3rd and 4th and 5th and 6th and reverse are good should I do what u did?
@ kev4ev Regular WD40 is a terrible idea to use on these delicate electrical connections, UNLESS you are using WD40 branded SPECIALTY ELECTRICAL CLEANER. Regular WD-40 leaves a oily residue that attracts dust. You do not want that on electrical components. 99% isopropyl alcohol dries with no residual film on any surfaces. @ Racing Legends I was surprised that you did not lubricate any of the moving parts with some type of light grease as you were doing the reassembly. This was an excellent video showing the complete tear down the shifting tower itself, as well as how easy it is to make repairs. I do not currently own one, but I have been watching as many RU-vid videos as possible showing any kind of information, modifications or reviews as to how this shifter is constructed. Yours has been the most informative so far! I’ve been going back-and-forth as to whether to use the Logitech, ThrustMaster or one of the Chinese made aluminum/stainless shifters for a Driving Rig project that I’m currently designing. Your video has helped me decide that I will use the Logitech shifter, after seeing how it is built, and as it is much cheaper than the other two. This is something I have been wondering about; how the shifter tower structure was constructed. Thanks!!!
hi i bought a new shifter for my wheel because my old one only went into gear if i would push and hold the shifter in gear, as soon as i let go of the shifter it was still in gear but it would read that i was in neutral. once my new one came in it worked good for like 10 mins and it started to do the exact same thing as my old one. do you know if its the shifters that are faulty? or is there anyway i could fix this problem?
So you had the G27 wheel+shifter and bought another G27 shifter? I thought it could be the PCB, but since both have the problm and it’s likely another used G27 shifter, it’s likely the same problem from the vid, bad signal from potentiometers caused by dirt, losse connections or crimped wires... good luck :)
Noooo please don’t do it!! I had to buy a whole new potentiometer , very hard to find, because the water in that alcohol rusts the internals of the pot
@@wor_lds5386 change spring make it stronger, or take of spring and put bigger that round metal i dont know the name, but is easy just create something to be stronger on that place where u see how it works i will open and make one video about that
@@RacingLegendss its beamNG drive if ur wanted to know what game it was. but my shifter is about 3 years old and im thinking of getting a manual+ sequential one
Maybe online or some electronics repair shop or just copy the layout in cad to a new one and ask a company to print it... I don’t know the price of that, but it might get a bit expensive
I found it a few months ago and have just now gotten back to thinking about it again but I remember it took me a few hours to find not from a Japanese sketchy website. Will update and come back with a link if I find it
@@RacingLegendss the black one is broke and it was separate from the green one and cannot stick together so I used epoxy glue to put them together but maybe the glue getting inside them and now every gears are not working
@@RacingLegendss i just took every Thing apart like you did and I didn’t clean anything I just blew som air on everything and then put everything back again and now it’s working flawless. Thank you🙏🏼🙏🏼
hey i'm gonna be straight, since nobody else can. DONT BUY THE G29 SHIFTER. ITS CRAP. IT DOESN'T DO THE JOB. you will be frustrated with shift misses, uncomfortable palm grip and short durability. EVEN WITH MODS IT CANNOT BE CALLED DECENT. don't waste your money in this shit. buy a chinese shifter on ebay or alie or whatever and be happy. listen to me, don't waste your hardly-earned free time with the g27/29 shifter because it is total crap and will disappoint you.
yo man, i got problem with steel ball in g29 shifter, theres a 1,5cm hole where ball hops in, but ball falls down till the end, it wont stay up, any help?
Geez! 1,5 cm is huge! You mean 1,5 mm? You can use a bigger ball, i had one from a bearing here at home and when i tried it, it got a bit heavier and harder to change gears, like real life
