Ever wondered why no company has created the perfect racing controller? I did too, so I decided to build one myself! In this video, I take you through my journey of designing and assembling a custom 900-degree racing wheel controller that outshines anything you can buy off the shelf.
This controller gives you a realistic driving experience and is perfect for vehicle simulator games like BeamNG.drive, Euro Truck Simulator 2, and SnowRunner.
Whether you're a DIY enthusiast or just passionate about racing games, this video is for you.
I’ll show you the step-by-step process, the challenges I faced (like dealing with unreliable electricity), and the final product that brings the most immersive driving experience to your favorite games.
If you’re searching for a DIY racing wheel project or want to see what a dream racing controller looks like, you’re in the right place.

I, for one, am one of those people who love the concept. I really miss being able to go to track days, but I can't really use my left foot with the same precision that I used to (And it's incredibly painful for me) I can't afford any of the mods to my cars to let me drive my old cars, nor would I exactly want to be tearing apart my Skylines and Silvia to do that, and my steering wheel controller is just as painful for me to use as a car, so this is the best of both worlds for me. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, from the bottom of the planet. As soon as I get a 3d printer, I'm making one of these, brushing up on my CAD skills, and hopefully remixing this to make it a little more ergonomic for putting in your hands.

I have some ideas for the controller. 1 - Add L/R buttons (like regular controllers), could be used for shifting gears. 2 - Move/add buttons for blinkers in the front of the controller. It would add/change the following : - L1 and L2 Button, located in the front left corner of the controller. - R1 and R2 buttons, located at the front right corner of the controller. - Since blinkers will move in the front L1/R1 or L2/R2, you’re left with 2 unused buttons. You may want to leave the there, repurposing them for other controls.

@@Adlevio, life has been tumultuous in Iraq for 30 years due to… well, America basically. Every Iraqi I have met has been very friendly and enormously skilful in their chosen fields. An Iraqi Doctor in Australia saved my son’s leg when he was 2 years old. If it wasn’t for him pushing Aussie hospital staff to do better, the result may not have been what it was (my son had an unusual, rare bacterial infection in the hip joint; If this Doctor had not diagnosed it quick enough and acted so fast with surgery and the exactly correct Antibiotic, my son would today have only one leg). Thanks to an Iraqi, my son is 20, able-bodied and doing body building now and enjoying life (and now my son, in turn, works with children who have disabilities to make their lives easier). I am confident this young inventor who shared this video will succeed in his career. If he succeeds IN Iraq, great. If he has to move for career advancement opportunities, so be it. Iraq (and the world) needs people like him. Imagine the blessing this device would be to disabled gamers who don’t have use of their legs and find regular controllers unsatisfying! having the wheel auto center when move your thumb from the steering wheel to the analog stick to rotate the camera (since both are on the left side) just sounds inconvenient imo. a better design would be to have the analog stick on the right side, and replacing the pedals with triggers just like a normal controller since then, you can both rotate the camera and the steering wheel at the same time which removes the inconvenience of having an auto centering wheel. hope that made sense (love your content btw).

@@Justgreen89925 WTF you need gasoline for??? You charge the car battery by mains grid while there is electricity. I think a 3D printer needs more power than an "UPS" for PC can deliver. At least the sort I know are used in offices only to safely shutdown the PC without data loss, so it has only enough power to run a desktop PC for perhaps 15 or 30 minutes. Of course also huge UPS battery cabinets for keeping a whole data center online during power fail exist. But I don't expect that this is stuff average people in Iraq have access to or can afford. Lead-acid car batteries from junkyard are most common where weight doesn't matter.
@Justgreen89925
@Justgreen89925 17 дней назад
@@cyberyogicowindler2448 I thought you meant an old car battery with a generator. Also your method is pretty unreliable since a battery+inverter solution can't switch from Bypass to offgrid like an ups can, and a 3d printer like his won't use more than 300w which a pc ups can very well supply

Some joystick modules come with ADC built-in and communicate via i2c/SPI to the Arduino. Either way most Arduino boards come with a 12bit(?) ADC.

@@ND15X yeah. Here it’s a regular 5pins joystick. Requires a proper Adc. Good to know arduino has built in Adc (it can be tricky to setup). Unlike raspberry4.

This is amazing work! As a professional game designer, I really appreciate what you did. Some suggestions: - Consider the ergonomics of the controller - smoother edges, firmer grips, like in an Xbox or PS controller. This will enhance the gaming experience. - Consider 3D printing a small, lightweight steering wheel assembly for your desk with a quick release option. You can research quick release adapters from Thrustmaster or ones used for camera tripods. You can have the quick release system permanently attached to your desk - snap in the steering wheel, connect via USB and you're done! Just keep in mind this will be less durable than a normal attachment :)

Agree. This is amazing was my first thought but my second thought was, Carpal Tunnel. Along with the overall ergonomics, I'd suggest "R" and "L" buttons for the index fingers to be used for shifting, and maybe a repositioning of the camera joystick. Super cool work, well done!

it is quite uplifted, so it would definetly hurt the hand in the future due to height but also from ux-side - moving the 4 buttons somewhere to center would be way better, cuz people would probably missclick on them while playing also i would like to curve the pedals themselves to better fingerpositioning

Ohh that's amazing. So cool. Props on doing it with the power outages. If anyone else is dealing with it, try printing parts in pieces. Certain printers can remember where they were, but if the powera out too long youd probably need to preheat and maybe force extrude for a bit.

This guy solves us the most concerning problem we had ever faced having a steering wheel NINE HUNDRED DEGREES using materials which are indeed cheap. Great job man:) Fun fact u (could if you want) also add gear shifting like how on the Ps4 there is the R2 and R1 you could make something similar like that but the upper (R2) would change up a gear and the down (R1) will down one gear. And at the L1 you could have a button for handbrake. All of those are ideas that if they were possible I bet you would be the number 1 competitor against the other companies for racing products. *Anyways you just got a new subscriber*. I am looking forward to seeing where this project would be going.

Dude, YES ! yes ! That wheel-knob is all we ever needed for actual driving games. Keyboard/Gamepads are almost useless for precise steering. If I were them, I would make a modular gamepad. Where you could pluck a set of pads and replace with diverse control options (including this knob-wheel). Also make it infinitely easier to fix/replace broken parts.
@sanjeen2503
@sanjeen2503 5 дней назад
That's an amazing piece of engineering right there. I can give you another idea off thw top of my head - make the camera joystick controlled by something else, like by our head rotation. If you move the head slightly right beyond 5°, then the camera rotates right at a fixed degree/second, the rotation speed increasing by the increase in your head's angle. once you move your head back to center, the view stops rotating. I suppose this will be revolutionary, as you would not need to lift your hands off the steering wheel or the accelerator just to look to the side!

The simplicity is of this controller’s design is fun and felt like it came from the era of early game consoles. It’s really neat and I would’ve assumed and believe that at first till I read that it was made by you on the title of the video. Which is amazing and I think it’s the first time I’ve seen anyone making a controller like this!

Very cool, I immediately thought of the Jogcon when I saw your thumbnails, that's why I clicked.I still think that shoulder buttons would stay optimal for fast pacing games like racing sims. But for truck or mud sims, that looks really satisfying to use.

It's a much less "high brow" solution, but I actually control beamng using a joystick (push forward for throttle, pull back for brake.) I use the joystick in my left hand and a mouse in my right hand for steering. Left mouse is clutch, the arrow buttons on the side of the mouse are for shifting, and the trigger on the joystick controls the handbrake. It works a lot better than you'd think (besides having no ffb.) Love seeing ways for people to get into sim driving without being able to afford wheels.

Adding a three position centering switch and a third pedal could act as a clutch and sequential shifter too for racing people!! Awesome design, all od recommend is butting the buttons by your fingers so you can continue using them phone your thumbs stay of the pedals and wheel! You did great!!

omg this is such a great idea! i always loved sim racing, but sometimes i wished i could play it a little bit more casually, instead of going full wheel, pedals, shifting stick.. just lay down on my bed, plug a controller, and just enjoy the game. I would add a L1 and R1 to have a way to shift manually, and it would be fancy to have LEDs that show the engine RPMs (like the Logitech G29) but really nice job! (sorry for the broken english, its my second language lol)
