Fix the play in your tired Silverado. LOOSE steering wheel play is from worn steering parts

In this video we are going to start with the steering collar and work our way down the steering shaft to find all of the worn parts in my 12 year old Silverardo 2500HD. These steering components can have you moving your steering wheel a whole lot just to drive straight down the road. These parts take a heavy beating from a truck of such proportions and definitely require your attention on a regular basis to maintain a quality ride.

Thanx Curt, Great info and instruct. Had a hard time convincing my son the problem was in the steering shaft or gear box. he insisted it needed alignment. Kudos to you for having your son Cameron there with you. Too many kids out there don"nt know anything about cars due to lack of parenthood.

Buddy and I just replaced all steering components on the front end..still steering play. Gonna have to pull the sterring column and check the T25 bolt and intermediate shafts. Thanks for the great info and for pulling the keys eventually to get rid of that terrible dinging! Need some PB blaster on the rusty shaft to get it to slide.

Dude. I have a 96 Tahoe. My steering wheel has a lot of play. I changed the steering shaft. The same one you're getting. But that screw you just showed might be my main reason. I actually have to do another tie rod job again. But man, thanks on that. I new there was a issue with the column.

My Silverado is doing almost exactly this. I might replace the shafts and tight up the T25 nuts. Also you can adjust the worm gear on top of the steering box. It's a t25 too. You loosen the 5/8 nut, turn the t25 til it's snug, back it off a quarter turn and tighten the 5/8 nut. Thank you though. This confirmed a few suspicions

Didn't do anything for mine, screws were tight already. So mine is probably in Pitman arm Joint or drag link joint to steering box, I don't have play in my tie bar or rod ends. Really hoping it's not the box itself. The upper Steering shaft u-joint u are going to replace doesn't appear to have play on mine either just by looking down the column and wiggling it. Was excited for an easy fix on this one grrrrr. What can ya expect for a truck with half a million on it lol

Thanks for the video! I've replaced literally everything I could think of steering-wise and just replaced the powering steering rack. My truck feels like a boat while driving and will jerk kinda hard when turning. It is aligned and drives straight but the steering wheel just goes left and then right and is never aligned, I'm gonna try tightening the T-25 down and hopefully, my problems will go away God willing.

I loved seeing someone fighting that task like I did ! Man a trying experience. Now since I replaced the cheap bearing and upper shaft it has a hard spot (binding spot ) when I steer ! I’m still slowly evaluating toward checking the lower shaft . Not much info concerning my continuing issue . Thanks for posting your video .
@romper4444
@romper4444 Год назад
If there's a stiff spot after it's likely they didn't shock the u joint shaft at the factory it was made in. After replacing a u joint u have to put the yoke on a vice or something solid and whack the other side of yoke to free up the bearing rollers in joint. They often bind after install. It kinda centers everything then moves freely.

I have the same problem, my shop claimed that they couldn't find the right shaft and that they gave the dealer my vin number and the dealer sent them the wrong part and that they couldn't get the right part for my truck, well within 10 minutes of looking on the autozone website I found the right upper and lower shaft and the steering wheel colum bearing. You should replace that bearing while your at it, they have made a new updated better version of it, it's the while plastic piece above when the upper shaft bolts in. I already forked out a bunch of money and replaced my steering gearbox and that helped quite a bit but I still have a good amount of play in my steering wheel and it's irritating, I'm going to be replacing my lower and upper shaft plus my steering colum bearing while I'm at it plus I'm going to put on a new Bilstein 5100 series stabilizer and hopefully that solves the problem.

@@CurtARoll Yep autozone is usually cheap junk unless you're buying the name brand stuff. I went back in the steering wheel and checked screws again...1 I got another half a turn on. Apparently I either missed it or didn't tighten enough. Now the play is ALL gone...it's awesome, dropped the tire pressure to around 52psi and it rides pretty good compared to what it was. I made a new vid describing some of the common issues/fixes
