Everyday Home Repairs That Fix It Guy hi. A plumber installed a brand new tub faucet yesterday. Now there is an issue. When running the diverter, only water comes out of the diverter with good pressure. The problem is when running the shower, the diverter still running. Both at good pressure. When everything is turned off, there are no leaks. I noticed this after the plumber installed and I asked the plumber why the diverter would still run, when shower is still running. The plumber said that is what the new faucets do now. That seems like a huge waste of water when showering. Is what he’s saying true or did he install something wrong? If he installed wrong, what is the fix?

Nice video. As you pointed out, Teflon tape is not necessary to stop the faucet from leaking. Teflon tape may be a lifesaver in the future for someone who wants to remove that spout after many years. That tape will help it to come off. I often use Teflon tape for that reason or I use Pernatex Anti-Seize which I get at auto parts stores. After many years, these faucets get stuck on. That is why they make strap wrenches so you don't mess up the finish. Some people stick a dowel or screw driver into the spout to get some leverage. Vinegar works very well. It works better when heated up. I heat it up in the microwave. I don't know if I would do that with CLR.
@SpookieSadie

Fun fact fron a professional house cleaner. You CAN use a stainless steel wool pad to speed up the process of removing calcium build up. Make sure it’s the 0000 grade. I use scotch brite brand. It’s safe for chrome fixtures, most nickel finishes too. Just not on brass. You can also use stainless steel wool pads on glass! Just make sure it’s not tinted.

@@EverydayHomeRepairs -- No idea what the ultimate mechanical explanation was, unfortunately. I was renting and it was the landlord's problem to fix. The leak behind-the-wall could be stopped if the handle was pushed all the way in and turned all the way to the left; that is how I was told to manage the minor leak when I moved in. Two years later that fix no longer worked and you could barely hear water running at all times. I notified the landlord several times and nothing was done until far too late. Edit: I gave landlord 2 weeks notice to fix this and other major plumbing problems. Nothing was done so I forced myself to move out. The shower handle in question looks like a Moen 3270 crystal handled one.

You need to get a mineral filter installed to your boiler to prevent build up of mineral deposits in any of your valves all around the house as it can also clogg your radiators and the boiler itself, also you'll need a magnetic filter to prevent buildup of black sludge in your radiators which will absorb the heat and make your gas bill go sky high as the sludge is made from iron deposits it'll take for ever to heat up the radiators in sufficient time in the mean time your gas bill will £££££$$$$$$$ instead of £$

I hate the fixed heads, I like being able to grab the head and point the water to whatever part of my body I want instead of trying to do awkward poses to rinse certain parts off. Showers are always my least favorite parts of hotels (they're also so small that first you do weird poses to keep parts of your body OUT of the water so you can wash without the soap just being rinsed away immediately, but I digress).

Mine worked fine until I got in the other day and as soon as I pulled down, it started shooting out sideways from the pull down diverter. As in, not from the core opening below in the faucet. I do still have about half of the flow going to the shower head, but it resulted in a very icy shower with that much water loss. I'm guessing that means it broke and needs a new one, as opposed to just cleaning it, correct?

The adapter is brass and the inside of the delta spout is plastic this is why you don't have to worry about it not wanting to come off in future, if the inside of the spout was brass then 100% you would need anti seez . But myself being a licensed master plumber and owning a plumbing company for over 20 years I have installed over 300 of this exact model spout. If you solder the adapter on correctly it will last for years, I see so many contractors soldering the adapter on with the O ring still on which I'm sure most of you know is incorrect, if you remove the O ring then solder the brass adapter on, wait for it to cool ( do not try to put water on the solder joint while it's hot to cool it faster , big no no ) so after it cools then put O ring back on, and screw the spout on until it's snug up against the wall, then put silicone around base so that water does not get behind spout. I never use anything on the adapter threads, the O ring seals the water from going backwards and beings the adapter is brass and the spout threads are plastic it will never corrode. I have some that were on for at least 13 years and went back to unscrew off the spout to replace the O ring and it comes right off like it was on there for one day. You can put anti seez on if you want or Teflon tape, I'm not saying that's wrong, I'm just saying that you don't need to . If you have ever installed any of these they screw on really easy , like super easy there almost to easy that's one reason they come off easy also. But they last alot longer than the ones that have the divert up top.

EXACTLY. What is the model number of that shower faucet diverter? I can't find it. I've looked online at Home Depot and Lowe's, and I ordered 2 from Amazon. But, the ones that I got have threaded ends -- into the diverter spout part. But, my plumbing pipe has that exact same attachment as his, and I need to find the spout that will slide onto it. If you can, please, give me a model number where I can purchase it online -- if you know it. Or, maybe, brand name. I thought it was a Delta, but the ones I got from Amazon don't seem to be it. Can't seem to get the tub spout loose. Any thoughts? Tried applying lots of pressure and twisting.

I need help, If possible pls! My shower won't turn off completely when id like to fill the tub. My landlord has replaced the tub spout, has also replaced the diverter in the wall. But that didn't fix the issue. Wharves the next step? What else is the possible issue? Do I need to take apart/replace the shower head? Tyia!

Has it ever worked correctly? It is possible when the valve was originally installed the pipe coming from the valve to the tub spout is too small causing a bit of restriction that results in water going up through the shower head.

@@EverydayHomeRepairs that I dont know. I have just moved in 2mos. ago. For that I suppose I'd have to remove drywall and find the valve? Or is it next to the spout?

I hope you don't mind me asking a loosely related question: In a condo where the plumbing is the responsibility of the condo association to maintain, and plumbing fixtures (sinks, bathtubs, showers, toilets) are the responsibility of the condo unit owner, what defines the dividing line between plumbing and fixture? For example, is the threaded pipe onto which the spout screws classified as part of the plumbing or as part of the tub/shower fixture? (To my eye, that pipe looks like part of the rough-in plumbing, not part of the fixture. My rule of thumb is that the dividing line is where connections are made, with threads or nuts and seals such as o-rings or plumber's tape.) Also, does the Plumbing Code imply traps are part of the plumbing, not part of the fixture, where the Code talks about the distance between the trap and the fixture outlet? (Except toilet traps, which are built into the toilet.)

Just my opinion, for whatever that's worth :) You would think, as you said, where the connection is. If they the immediate pipe that connects is your responsibility as well, what if you damage it and it causes other problems in spots that are "their" responsibility? Most of those fixtures are cheap and easy to replace, as well as break due to their cheapness, hence why they say it's your responsibility. You'd be best catching the actual maintenance person and asking them directly-as opposed to someone in the office. Plus, the maintenance person may be pretty cool and do stuff on the side or a little extra on the company's dime. Never know :)

That homeowner has hard water, lots of calcium. Check the inside of the kettle to confirm. Maybe a water softener would help ?

Hey, you got any thoughts on a shower head that whenever someone uses water in the house it starts dripping from the head? The other one I got is sometimes my toilet will scream at me. ...Not even kidding, it makes a high pitch loud continuous squeak I guess, which I temporarily fix by flushing the toilet.
@VegasChef21
@VegasChef21 3 года назад
The screeching is most likely the fill valve.

What do I do if my tub spout won’t turn? I don’t know if the previous owners did something to it because I’ve found a lot of bandaid fixes in this house so it would sell, I tried turning it and it just won’t turn and I’m having this exact issue

Can these be taken apart? I have a kind of fancy spout that I'm not going to be able to match and the esthetic is very important

How about the opposite? In one of my showers, the water flow stops completely when I pull on the diverter half the time, like there’s a flake or something blocking the pipe up to the shower head. I’m tempted to take off the shower head and and squirt some CLR up the pipe with a turkey baster…
@bookbeing

That is an ingenious idea! I was thinking of using a shampoo bottle or dish soap bottle and squirting some up in there but I like the turkey baster idea better!
