Fix Windows Shutdown Problem 

I like how you outline what the microsoft hotfix does because if their hotfix messed things up we know where to go to revert its changes. This is one of the most helpful video on PC troubleshooting I've seen!

If You have an old pc do these things.... 1.clean it up properly,dust off the web or dust in it,try plugging out all wires and then plug them back in 2.take out your RAM cards and clean their shiny parts by rubbing with a clean paper,and also clean the small area from where you have taken it out. 3.Update all your drivers. 4.if you have windows try its start-up repair feature. 5.Just be calm it will be fine. 6.if nothing of above works try formatting windows and installing a new one.{it does not depends whether you have a original windows or not} 7.if that even not works try getting help from some expert person of computers. 8.And my favourite part if nothing works throw away your computer and buy a new one. My Pertional experience :- i have tried all things from 1 to 7 nothing worked for me but i wish it will work for you... and i am about to do number 8. :D

Hi Kenan, Sounds like "black screen of death" does it have a black screen with blinking cursor? it could be a MBR rootkit, also prevx have a fix for black screen.

I have been figuring this problem out for ages now. And i finally got it! With my mouse plugged into my laptop it doesn’t shut down correctly but without it it just works fine. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah that's something I also wanted to add in the video but the list was getting bigger and bigger and times was ticking on, but your right Windows Update does cause a lot of slow shutdown issue. There is lots more also, but hard to cover it all in a short video.

Worked great! no idea why all of the sudden, after everything was working fine, my computer forced me to get to this point, but following and applying most of these attributes, i was able to restore proper functionality to my shutdown process. Thanks a bunch!

Amazingly useful information. Got my problem fixed using the system files checker(sfc). On Windows 8, don't forget to turn off quick startup.

Creating the shutdown shortcut that you referenced helped me to solve an issue I was having in Windows 10. The problem I was having in Windows 10 was that my computer was restarting every time I tried to shut it down. Your solution fixed my problem. Thank you very much!

I know it has been like a year since this video has came out but could you help me? Every time I turn on my laptop it starts up and then after the start it says shutting down but It won't shut down.

You've only created a backup of the HKLM hive, because that was selected. However, there is an option in the regedit Export dialog, where you can select whether to export the whole registry, or only the selected subtree. (Didn't see anyone mention this.)

Thank you Britec. The moment you mentioned any hardware that's plugged into your computer may be causing the issue it dawned on me that I've got a retractable Gigaware 4 port USB hub plugged in. The retractable cable quit working awhile back and I've ran into issues with devices with retractable cables before. So I removed the hub and my computer shut down just fine. It sounds odd, but stay away from devices with retractable cables. They can weird stuff out.

I have a problem where whenever I open an application and use it for a certain amount of time, it will just close everything on my computer, do a sleep shutdown, then reboot itself and say windows has recovered from a problem, then states the problem is blue screen

everytime i turn on my computer i set the latest time and date this regarding the CMOS battery but after i try to shut it down in won't shutdown it restart just after a sec and a have to set the time and again. Is the culprit is the PSU or CMOS i tried re-seating it and syntom persist

I had encountered problems with a game after adding a 1394 card to my system. The card worked ok but for some reason it played havoc with a game loading. I physically removed the card, but it was at this point I had shut down and restart problems. After looking at your post I thought it could be an issue with the 1394 card not being closed through Windows , so I reinserted the 1394 card and rebooted I noticed that Windows did not install any drivers. I run a test shut down which responded ok, there was still the issue with the game crash so I opened device manager via control panel and disabled the 1394 device. Now my PC shuts down ok and my game does not crash and should I need to use the 1394 device I only need to enable it in Device Manager. Thanks for your post it was very helpful.

I put a newer motherboard (Dell: Core 2 Duo) in an old computer (Gateway case with Pentium 4) and have this issue. I am thinking the power button connector is not working well with the newer motherboard. Perhaps a different pin configuration that won't allow windows to shut down my computer??

I agree about 1st checking for virus and malware. After doing all this I found that Skype was the problem. when you shut your computer down Skype has a shutdown sound. The computer said logging off and shutting down. The shutting down message went on for ever. After finding the problem by killing all the active programs I found that the shut down sound in Skype was the problem. I went into tools and options and sounds and unchecked the shutdown sound. That fixed it. Who would ever believed that a shutdown sound would cause the problem. Now my computer shuts down. I have backed up (imaged) the hard drive and am a happy camper !

I have an annoying problem i hope you can help me with. I'm trying to install Windows XP SP2 form scratch (deleting partitions and all that) and when the setup gets to the blue screen, my PC shuts down. clearpagefileatshutdown at 0 does work, however, mine keeps reverting back to setting "1" in the registery without my doing. I did a malwarebytes scan as well as a Super Antispyware scan and an Adware removal scan and go no results, a "clean bill of health" I do not know why my clearPagefileatShutdown always reverts to 1 after I set it to 0 the only thing I installed recently was the nVida Experience driver update but promptly removed it, I still have the problem. chkdsk /r /f /x is a surface test, my drive is an SSD. not a recommended option for it.

I need help my windows 7 laptop is displaying the Failure to show logon and security error when I press control alt delete then I reset the laptop and it booted into some sort of safe modish desktop.

I have encountered some problems when I was using Windows Vista, I sometimes find that the computer takes three minutes to shut down. I did try some of the things you suggested, and it worked, but in this case, defragmenting the Hard Drive can speed up shut down time. Another thing is that there was once that my computer startup is very slow, after I messed with system configuration, the startup time is much faster.

I did all the steps as mentioned but it was barely marginal difference of less than 10 seconds. Overall my windows 7 was taking 4.5 minutes to shutdown. I narrowed down the services and found out it was Avast anti virus that was the culprit. I removed avast and now it shuts down in 36 seconds. That is a huge difference from around 270 seconds earlier.

I'm having a weird issue here that started happening some days ago, I usually leave my computer alone when downloading stuff via torrent and for some unknown reason my network stops working after some hours (the wifi icon gets the yellow exclamation mark over it) and I cannot disconnect or connect to another network, it does nothing when I try. Then when I try to shutdown or reboot the computer it will stop at the 'windows is shutting down' screen and I'll have to turn it off manually. More strangely I have no issues if I am actually using the computer, either to watch some stuff over the internet or playing some games. This is killing me because I leave several GBs stuff coming and going and I'd have to keep an eye on it, which I can't. Any help is really appreciated. OS is Win7.

upgraded to windows 10 awhile ago with little problems. Now just within past few days, even when I've changed all my setting to never, it constantly hibernates within moments of not touching it. I have to work and review records, then enter data so this is horrible!
