Nothing quite like bringing a retro handheld back to life, but finally, this poor pink DS can be reborn in a fantastic Mario coloured shell! I think it needs a nice vinyl sticker, what do you think?

I am gonna use this video tonight when I replace my DS housing shell too! I'm also making it red aka the coolest looking colour for the DS. Edit: Update, the shell replacement was a huge success! This video was wonderfully easy to follow. Thanks man!

I've been hoping they'd start making replacement shells for the limited edition DS's. I know they have made some for the DS lite (I bought one) and starting to for the GBA SP. I've really wanted a Pokemon Center limited edition Mew DS without spending more than our rent. If they made that shell, that'd be amazing.

Just finished a shell replacement on my old DS (hinge was broken). Thanks a lot for making this video, this was such a big help. I think I have the confidence to take a stab at fixing some of my other worn out handhelds now.

The calendar got reset with the battery removal so it set to 01/01/2000 and the birthday is 01/01

Here's hoping that someday, the DS ML shells are also available for sale so that we don't have to buy the whole thing, and also because the quality of these shells is pretty good. And lucky of you that you got the V5 motherboard, you know, the one where you can get the four levels of brightness after flashing the firmware.

@backofficeshow Only for the later revisions of the motherboard. Right now, I'm trying to order a handful of DS MLs to see if one of them has the CPU-20 motherboard and return the rest.

Seems like the protruding material on the top of the clamshell is a common problem on these aftermarket shells. Someone on Reddit suggested sanding the OEM screws to be a bit shorter to resolve the issue. I believe this is what I will do when I get my new shell next week.

Where can I get one of those aftermarket replacement housing shells for the old ds phat? They're really hard to come by these days... And yours looks way better than those that used to be sold at Aliexpress

It’s a pain to find a top screen or any screens for that original DS. I’ve got an old one that has a few dead pixels, unfortunately haven’t been lucky in finding replacement screens.

The plastic in these shells get really brittle with age when exposed to a lot of UV light

Successfully swapped 2 battered screens out of my old baby that had a mangled touchscreen from the day I bought it in 2007, she looks excellent. I much prefer the shape of the Phat over the Lite, it's much more comfortable, and the Lite's hinge is ridiculously poorly designed

I only used a few parts of the new shell, since the quality of my new shell was meh. Also I took the hinge to a machine shop near me and had it made out of aluminum

Arrrgh! It was all going so well too! :-0 I hate it when screws do that! :-0 I did that with an Atari ST once and it sat there every time I used it mocking me! In the end I chopped the end of the screw off to make it shorter and cut the plastic bulge off with a sharp craft knife, made it look much better but I'm not sure how well it would work on red plastic :-/

It's a darn nuisance but fortunately I'm not too bothered about it now. I'm giftng this particular unit and I'm really sure the new owner will be over the moon.

@@backofficeshow I was just thinking about something like that actually! :-) My girlfriend bought some Mario themed decals from B&M for her switch and 3DS, were quite cheap. Might be worth considering if there's a branch near you that has them in stock :-) but a proper vinyl skin would probably be best if you can find one! :-)

@Steven Hawkins its not my playlist and I'm unsure why it's public, its my friends moms, I left my account logged in by complete accident. Deleted it., And no no its not a dirty mind, it's a real thing, FlashMe V5 or V7 is a custom firmware that can be flashed to the original ds fat to enable more brightness modes. And if you get a $10 super-card micro sd on ebay it will let you boot ds homebrew by holding the select button on boot.

Bough a shell from eBay but it was absolute crap, the original screws didn't even fit the holes :/ Since then I've abandoned the project but have all the parts properly guarded and will rely on your video when I get back to it with a proper shell :D Thanks for the work!

Does the plastic feel as good as the original housing shell? I know the original ds didn’t have the most durable plastic to begin with. I ordered my shell and am waiting for it to arrive from China and will be using your video to guide me.

I attempted this repair 12 years ago and I ended up cutting a ribbon cable, I got the shell on put the ds was bricked

My DS hinges broke I replaced the shell but pin the hinge part one was the hard part I heard you use pliers to push the hinges in correctly and put it together

Hey man, how did you end up managing that part? My hinges seem to just not fit the new case. I saw there was some plastic residue on the edges that i removed, but to no avail. :/

Hey great video!! I have a question. Is it possible that in the reshell, you can do something that will prevent the ds from reading games? I reshelled my ds and now its not reading any gba/ds games. Everything else works perfectly. its possible it never read them in the first place as I didn't test it when I found it in my attic.

Not really unless you snagged something in the board. I think you can try to spray some contact cleaner into the card reader and try a few cards to clean out any dirt in there.

I just did a reshell, but now my DS will not turn on. If I plug in a charger the charging light comes on (and stays on), but when I attempt to turn it on I hear a faint poor crackle from the speakers (no other lights or screens come on). Kinda stumped.

If you didn't fix it but still want to then check the pin connectors (the golden bars) on the battery maybe one of the popped out of place slighty. It happened to me the first time

What's that thing called where you applied it on the bottom screen? Gasket foam tape? Gasket silicone foam? Can't seem to find a correct size in home depot or walmart.

I don't think home depot will have it, you could try to use a double sided tape. I'm not sure exactly what it's called but foam tape would be my first search on Google

I have a question. I'm about to reshell my ds. But I need to replace the screens. By any chance does the original DS happen to use the same screen on top and bottom? But the bottom one has a digitizer.

Is there a way to put an original DS fat into a smaller shell like into a ds lite? Since you can only mod a capture card into the original ds fat and not the ds lite, I want to change the fat one into a smaller shell cuz I hate how big it is

I kinda raped my motherboard, because i fucked up my battery. Even i was a bit curious of putting the touch screen ribbon out and in. It was all white, but it was still fun enough. (silly me) XD
