I love the simplicity of your golf tips. For those of us without a lot of practice time, these are tips that are easy to remember and take to the course.

You are the only instructor that mentions the flexing of the left wrist early in the takeaway and why it has to be so. Such a small move yet it is so important! Thanks for sharing!

Just finding this but what a great tip and explanation of the first move. Most people think that a forward press can start but this “right hinge back or right palm toward the ground move” is so much more simpler and consistent. Thank you.

Your teaching just gets better and better. I have a recurring problem with the takeaway almost like the yips, and even without having had the chance to try this move yet I can see that this will almost certainly cure my problem. Well done Russell, you have definitely become my preferred coach over the time I have spent watching your videos, looking forward to receiving more good advice.

I think that this right-wrist hinge also helps to start the club back on the proper plane. Once you make that wrist hinge, it will define a plane and you simply continue turning to the top without any further manipulation. Some golfers think of a flat (or even bowed) left wrist at the top which in effect is the same thing as having the right wrist hinged, or what some instructors refer to as the waiter's tray position, i.e., you could balance a waiter's tray on your right hand at the top. It definitely leads to a consistent position at the top of the swing which lessens the need for major compensation on the downswing. Great tip!

It absolutely does...you get your structure set up right at the beginning and then just turn to the top...it feels wrong which is why people (myself included) for away from it or adjust something when I shouldn't bit it's a great method if you commit to it

Russell! Another excellent video. Your lesson pointed out to me exactly the positions that I am trying to attain in the backswing. Your presentation gave me "food for thought" on what I should be doing to accomplish this. Keep up the good work!!!

Good video. I used to do a forward press to get my wrists in the “left wrist flat” position. It was my trigger move. And it worked. Then I had some lessons and was taught to keep wrists/hands quite until hip high. He removed my trigger move. Well that was a disaster and I’ve been trying to recover ever since. I’ve tried to reintroduce the forward press but it doesn’t work like it used to. I think it’s because I move much better in other areas of my swing now, that the forward press puts me in an odd position; therefore that move was really a compensation move. So I have been working on what you’re saying for the last month of our season here in Ontario and I like the results. I also like the confirmation that doing this with the wrists is a good move. Thank you.

Yes, in a Forward Press the wrist and back of the Lead Hand move towards the target. Here the Lead Wrist stays in place and the Flexion of the Lead Hand moves the Knuckles and Fingers AWAY from the Target. I use the same Movement to trigger my Putting Stroke. If you watch the "DJ segment" at 5:40 - at the very beginning - DJ uses a slight Forward Press *as his final set at Address.* Then he uses the Wrist Hinge to trigger his Takeaway.

Russell, do you hinge the wrist in the same way when using the driver and longer clubs like fairway woods?

Mr. Heritage: Can I just set up with the lead wrist flattened instead of the "forward press-then back" trigger move? More like Bryson?

DJ actually incorporates a subtle forward press to set his wrists.

Contact me channel. It’s very applicable to a lot of the things that I do.. But I need some help with one thing and I’m sure you’ve probably addressed something like this but I have found on the course in my take away a lot of times my weight will shift too far4 to the rear And I will have a hard time coming back to the low spot in the swing because I’m so far to the rear to begin with. Trying to figure out what kind of initial move I can make to keep my weight and more centered. Should be a Ford press for just the wrists or maybe just a slight push against the inside of my right heel?
@russellheritagegolf
@russellheritagegolf 2 года назад
The weight shift is fine. I don’t know but uncertain that this is your fault
@cscoetzee

Why not just flatten the left wrist (cup right wrist) when you are setting up, right from the start? Then you can just swing your arms back from there. That removes the need for performing an extra move during the swing, does it not?
@929mmr
@929mmr 2 года назад
I was scrolling down to see if anyone else commented on that. My golf pro always said I was too handsy so he wanted me to quiet my hands on the takeaway and I very much trust him but then you've got the late flattening of the lead wrist at the top to figure out. I did spend a summer setting my wrists at address so the the club head was a fair amount behind the ball before I even started the swing. From that positions I tried to have quiet hands and it actually worked pretty well. Problem was the different length clubs and different ball positions caused me to feel like my preset positions were rather inconsistent in length from one swing to another. The idea of simply presetting so that the shaft is in line with the lead arm is a good one and I wish I had thought of it back then because I think I started overdoing it. . Its kind of like the forward press with the same goal. Anyway, my pro was fine with the presetting as long as it was still square to the ball. I went back to the traditional address position but only because I was feeling a little inconsistent like I mentioned. I might give it another shot for the indoor season. It makes some sense.

If you watch the very beginning of the "DJ segment" (at 5:40) you will see DJ make a slight Forward Press. *This is actually his Final Move to set his Address Position.* Then, DJ uses the Wrist Hinge to trigger his takeaway.
