Really awesome video! Don’t be fooled by shops that won’t touch a Tesla’s suspension or brakes. You don’t need the Tesla service center for things that are not special to Tesla because you will get ripped off!
This is a great video. Most all the time it’s the toe that goes out of alignment. Shops these days charging $120 USD and more for a “toe and go” alignment. Thanks for making this and showing folks how to go about it
Our pleasure. It's also difficult to get the steering wheel perfectly centered on alignment racks, when a car isn't moving. So having the knowledge on how to fix a steering wheel that is slightly off is something that we feel should be in every hobbyist's skill set!
amazing content! thank you for making this. question on the toe assessment: when you noticed the 1mm toe in, how do you know which side to correct? it could be 1mm on the left or 1mm on the right or 0.5mm on each side. is there a source of truth to compare alignment to?
For the rear: If the car is pulling, you know based on the direction the car is pulling. If the car had 1mm toe in, and it was pulling to the left, then you know you want to point the wheels to the left - which will cause the car to pull to the right (imagine steering both rear wheels to the left, this causes the car to rotate to the right). So if the goal was 0 toe for example, the right move would be to toe out the left 1 hex, which would achieve 0 toe and change the thrust angle in the direction desired. For the front: The direction the steering wheel is off-center indicates which side to correct.
Yes!...keep making videos. I really appreciate the empowerment provided from these. Not all vehicle service is mystical, cryptic, complicated, etc... Provided we tighten the learning curves and respect, BUT PUSH , our limits, it is always better to do and know more. Wait, is it lefty tighty or? 🤔
Had a 6mm difference in my front wheels same as you. Turned the adjustment rod halfway around (3 hex's = 3mm) and my front wheels are back to a perfectly neutral front measurement and steering wheel back to neutral (so relieved). Thank you so much for this video. Do you know what damage or bending (if any) happens to the front components to throw off the alignment like this? I'm thinking something has to give, and the tie rods are all threaded so...
The video is great but I do not have after market Arastradero Rear Toe adjustment arms installed. How do I make a toe correction with the OEM stock arm on 2022 Tesla Model Y?
Hey MPP, brought this up at a recent alignment as my car still drives to the right a bit when the steering wheel is straight. The numbers are all in spec so I suggested a total toe adjustment eg try a hex on left and right per the video (as I don’t have jacks etc myself but may consider it). The guy suggested this would push out the individual toe and create excess wear on one of the tyres. Sounds wrong to me based on this video that if alignment is otherwise correct & total toe maintained that a total/cross toe adjustment shouldn’t do anything worse Re wear really if you are steering straight?
@MountainPassPerformance Thanks for this vid! Where can I buy your toe plates? Could not find them on your website. Cheers Julius from Salzburg, Austria
Was the 6mm out for the video or did that happen from driving? (Assuming y is ~ -1mm stock like 3) With the motor /driveshafts so direct to the wheel hub, can you effect the front motor at all by being too far out of alignment for too long?
If I replace the OEM toe arm with a Arastradero toe arm, how do I set the arm for installation so it matches the position of the factory arm? Otherwise, the toe will be way off from the jump, correct?
I would run 1 to 2mm total toe-in for the front. We made a couple more tweaks on the Y, but wanted to show you guys a really simple explanation of how to do it!
@@JT-ow3hq Toe-in?? Going toe-in would scare me.. (My model Y P is a family driven kid hauler after all, not a track car) .. From my scale model experience, when a car has toe-in, It's alot more likely to spinout during high speed emergency stops.....
@@justinmallaiz4549 You've got it backwards, toe-out is usually less stable than toe-in. OEM spec is a bit of toe-in on the rear wheels, the front wheels are pretty close to neutral.
Love that I found your channel, BUT you didn't speak at all about Tesla's wheel (camber) the rear wheels all wear the inner tread from factory. Is that fixable?
Hi there, thanks for the kind message! Rear camber is not adjustable from the factory, but our rear upper control arms have become extremely popular because they allow for precise and repeatable adjustments to the rear camber.
Hi! My model 3 is lowered with springs only. It has had 4 alignments and so far no one has gotten the steering wheel straight. I can pretty much assume that it has no toe-in or out cuz someone would have fixed that by now. My steering wheel is a little to the right so im gonna try this method doing 1 hex at a time on both sides in the front. I'll shorten the left whilst leangthening the right if i got it right?! :O
Good luck, let us know how you make out. You've got that right - lengthen the right and shorten the left equal amounts to fix a steering wheel that is off to the right!
Thanks for this video :) I can see from my service screen that my steering wheel has a 2.6 degree misalignment, is there a calculation to find out how many hex that is to correct, or is it just a case of just try one at a time?
If I make my steering wheel straight the car goes left and because of that all systems are disabled! Like break , autopilot , traction etc ... do you think if I correct the steering wheel the system will work again !
Yes, because the adjustment is far closer to the axle centerline than where the measurement is taken! If you are holding a long pole and move your hands a small amount, the end of the pole moves much further. Same thing.
Just watched this after big O tires gave my tesla back with the steering wheel off center, they are working on it still they should just watch this video 😅
this seems like a pain, you only adjust the toe, what about the camber? how do you know all wheels run in the same direction? for $60 you do a complete alignment, no headaches!
John Davidson John Davidson This is helpful. With less than 7,000 miles on my brand new Tesla Model Y I took my car to have my tires rotated. To my alarm, the inside tread on the front tires were bald and would not pass the state inspection. It was clear that Tesla delivered the car without aligning the tires. I notified Tesla in Peabody believing that this was clearly a warranty issue. His reply: Good Afternoon John, This is Blake from Tesla Service in Peabody. Unfortunately, both alignments and tires are not covered under your vehicle warranty as they are a wear and tear item. There are many factors which contribute to a vehicle's alignment which could have led to the kind of wear in the photos. We can keep the appointment for the 3rd at this time so that we can order 4 new tires if you wish. We can send you the estimate for them and the alignment through the app or I can attach it to this email if you prefer. You'd be surprised how off even proper laser alignment racks can be. It's very difficult to get the steering wheel perfectly aligned, which is why so many brand-new Teslas are delivered with a crooked steering wheel. It's not magic - an even adjustment to the tie rods on both sides will straighten the steering wheel without affecting the total toe. Simple, fast, easy. Is knowledge a waste of time?
@@MountainPassPerformance come on, respond. How can you say that an alignment is not accurate, but you have this device that has so many variables to be a good choice. Have you ever used a hunter alignment or something similar. Tell everyone how you know this.
@@wejaith3 We've run our own shop and owned a laser alignment machine, and worked with many others. You're not going to win this argument with us. Go argue with someone else on the internet, pal 🤣
