I was successful on my best friend's family farm in Kentucky. This was my first year hunting at all after working to get myself there since 2019. It was a button buck that I thought was a doe when I shot it. 12-15 yds, I was in a saddle about 25ft elevation (18' up the tree but it was growing on the beginning of a ridge). I used a 125gn montec which sounds like one of those footballs with whistles on the front as it flies. Full pass through, the deer didn't go more than 50yds and then stood in place and flopped. We went gutless so I didn't get the autopsy but the body cavity was filled with vital blood and I like to think it destroyed both lungs. This was with a $200 Sandlida dragon clone, pulling 64.5lbs. I had done string work myself, I tuned it myself, I re-shimmed the cams with Athen's archery shims and I had to JB weld the cam modules in place because they couldn't handle the bow being maxed out. I know now that arrow comes out of that bow @251fps. 28.5" draw, Victory RIP gamers, stock insert, AE Max Hunters, 475gn TAW. I had missed one deer earlier in the hunt shooting over the back at 25yds from a tree stand. I hit high on a different deer and got 2" of penetration after big thwack. I believe I hit the shoulder on that one. We tracked it as far as we could but the blood trail went directly uphill about 100yds before it got too thick for us. Pretty sure that deer is still alive , but we had a great blood trail. I'm with Josh on three or more blades for a good blood trail after my experience. This was also from a tree stand. I'll be doing more practicing from a treestand before next year's hunts. Final note, what a year for you Tim! I wanna give you a big hug. It's been great to see you start your channel and watch you as it's grown and you've honed your craft of shooting, hunting and filming. Do me a favor and go watch some of the RU-vid channel Swamp N Stomp. They are the guys whitetail hunting on public land in my neck of the woods (Florida) and I've learned so much from them as well. I would get such a kick out watching you get the full Florida woodland swamp experience! Keep on keeping on and happy hunting!

Went from expandable to fixed this year.... not for me.... it was a Christmas gift I wanted to be thankful of.... 4 blade TOTA 30" ct5 296fps /420g arrow..... 31 yard broadside shot... PICTURE PERFECT... the deer did not bleed. Only when it went downhill you saw blood. Tracked for 250 yards on my hands and knees with a UV light at night.... Yeah,I understand that no man's land is a thing but I've shot EVERY single deer I've killed in the exact same spot.

I killed 3 whitetails with NAP kill zones all 3 died within 100 yards. Penetration could have been better i would think on one of the buck but still got a pass through. Also shot an aoudad ram with shwacker but made a bad shot because of deflection from hitting a limb. Great blood for 200 yards but never found him. Mathews v3x 29.5” Dl 72lb draw length. 460 grain gold tip hunter xt.

So for past the 3 years I have been using Grim Reaper broadheads. Usually the razorcut or razor tip 100 gr on 70lbs bow 29.5 draw length. Total arrow weight 425 grains black eagle arrows. I have hunted bear, turkey, deer. They do a number on the animal. They fly bettter then most in my opinion. Pretty durable compared to others. Remain pretty sharp. I have been able to reuse broadheads with a little reshapening. Also can get replacement blades. Have tried many many mechanical broadheads for comparison and nothing has come close. This is my opinion I am sure others have different opinions.

First year hunting with a bow. Missed a cow elk at 45 yards on the final day of the season due to a deflection off a branch I didn't see. Took the same setup to my parent's house in Ohio and shot a doe (only deer that walked within 60 yards of me the entire week after seeing 9 total in 10 - 12 sits) at 24 yards. It was a quartering to shot, arrow entered high in front of the left shoulder and exited low behind the right shoulder. Full pass through with the arrow embedding in the ground about 8 inches if I had to guess. Arrow went exactly where I placed it and shot was perfect. Never hit bone on the way through. I was shooting a Grim Reaper Micro Hades 100 GR on a RIP TKO. Total arrow weight was 457 GR shooting 288 FPS out of an Elite Terrain at 68#s. I saw her fall at about 80 yards and the shot was just before last light so I didn't worry too much about the blood trail (wish I would have looked in hindsight), but she was toast in about a minute. Got 45#s of meat off of her for the freezer so she was a pretty good sized deer.

I got my first whitetail buck in 10 years with a bow this year. Shooting 73lbs at 32in draw, 605 grain Easton axis 5mm arrow with a 125 grain Magnus black hornet ser-razor. This was my first time truly broadhead tuning and it took forever (definitely my inexperience more than anything else), but it was so rewarding to see that arrow fly perfectly and hit right where I was aiming. Was a 15yard shot from a tree stand, deer trotted about 60 yards, he didn’t even seem to realize he was hit until he fell over. I am switching over to a victory RIP arrow for next year, will be closer to 540 gr TAW, still trying to decide which broadheads I want to shoot with them, hoping to get more speed for flatter shooting, though in the thick woods I hunt I likely won’t have a shot past 30 or 35 yards. Thanks for the awesome video!

Reflecting about the good & bad of a season is always good! I enjoyed your conversation today. I agree with MFJJ's comments about broadhead diameter. I don't think you need to throw a small hatchet through a deer to put one down. I also like those who pull back from the high FOC & heavy arrow fan club. Yet, I would take penetration (two holes) over a wide cut any day. I think a person also needs to shoot what is best for their set up. I am 60+ age-wise and pulling back a higher poundage bow when the temperatures drop in Wisconsin has become more difficult for me. I have some shoulder issues, but I don't want to hang up my compound for good yet. I switched to a 60 pound compound a number of years ago. Since making that switch, I have gone to Victory VForce Elite arrows & 100 grain Slick Trick Viper Trick broadheads (4 blades/1 15/16" total cut). For my whitetail set up, I like this broadhead. I find the blades easy to keep sharp. The broadhead flies awesome. I feel like it is cross/hybrid between a cut-on-contact head with replaceable blades. Most of all, I like the angle of the blades over even the ST Standards (2" total cut) or the Magnums (2.25" total cut). I'm sure there are other good options like some of the Magnus broadheads, but I am quite content with the Viper Tricks. The Grim Reaper Fatal Steel does look awesome, but I wouldn't like the blade angle for my set up. If I shot 70 pounds again, I would feel differently. I shot a doe on September 29th through the front shoulders. I had a complete pass through which surprised my friends. I would have seen her drop, but the vegetation was too thick. I didn't track her. I just walked to where I heard her drop about 50 yards from my stand. I shot a nice 11 pointer (one of my target bucks) on November 6th. Once again I had a complete pass through. I had more of an angled down shot, but my arrow placement was good. He took about 5 jumps, stopped, looked back at his side, legs started to wobble, and he flipped over backwards about 35 yards from my stand. The Viper Trick looks small compared to other broadheads, but I keep my blades razor sharp. I touch up my main arrow's blades at least once a week. Just a gentle touch up with an Arkansas stone while watching TV. I shot the doe with an EZ-V sight and the buck with a single fixed pin sight. I've been an avid bowhunter since 1986, and I don't use multiple pin sights or movable pin sights. I use a simple HHA Optimizer Cadet sight most of the time. I practice all summer without a range finder, because learning to judge distances is a big part of my practice sessions. I move my Rhinoblock all over the place & just shoot. I don't need a rangefinder to know when I am uncomfortable with a shoot. I know my limitations, & I am not taking long shots like out west. I shot 3-blade Muzzy broadheads for decades before switching to the Viper Tricks. My younger brother (age 57) has shot NAP Thunderheads for decades. My older neighbor has done the same for turkeys & deer. They are still successful hunters even with older bows. The key is knowing your equipment. I would take that over a new set up any day.

Most beneficial video you’ve produced! Thank you!🙏 Current broadhead is a Kuyuga pilot cut single bevel 125 without the bleeder. Killed 2 mature whitetail bucks and a coyote with them now. Total blood loss of all three has been less than expected in a single coyote. All 3 animals also took longer to die than with any other head I’ve used. (37 years of bowhunting big game) Will definitely be making a switch

Shooting a Bowtech Carbon Knight. 65lbs. 465 TAW 1.5 SEVR. Shot a buck early November in NJ out of a saddle at 10 yards. Full pass through quartering away. Arrow entered about second to last rib exited armpit opposite side. He ran 60 yards. Hopefully will be able to get out to get a doe in late season. Side note for this video, it had a cool feel to it. Definitely a different style than you typically do but it was real cool for this type of video. Keep up the great work man. Congrats on a great 2023!

Shot 3 white tail this year with the 2 different bows same exact arrow 2 different Broadheads. Shot a mature doe @ 21 yards slightly quartered to with Hoyt RX4 at 73 lbs 28-1/4”. Rip TKO @ 428 grains. Used an NAP DK4 1-3/4” cut she didn’t make it 25 yards died in sight. Shot a nice mature buck at 27 yards same exact arrow with PSE Unite @ 73 lbs and Rocky Mountain switchblade broadhead. Full pass through top of the heart we’re all the valves come together. He went less than 25 yards dead in seconds. Third deer was same exact arrow with new Rocky Mountain switchblade but buck was hard quartering to shot broke high but sliced jugular, esophagus top of 1 lung and into the other lung and stopped. Deer went less than 30 yards and dead in seconds. I admit that is a very risky shot that I don’t recommend. But great success. Thanks for such great content!

Ive had excellent success with qad exodus. The holes and penetration have been unbelievable using a 463 grain tko, 30 inch draw, 67lbs. My teenage son has used Magnus Serrated 2 and 4 blades and has dropped three deer within 80 yards shooting 47lbs, and a 4😊05 grain arrow. The blood trails with the Magnus were very light on all three, but the cavity of the animal was just filled with blood everytime. Took a large mule deer with a wasp drone and while it did the job, I was upset that one of the three blades sheared off wile hitting a rib.

I’d have to say this has been my best season with a bow. I shot two whitetail bucks on public, 9 pointer and an 8. Along with my first Eastern Turkey with a bow on public. I’ve always done the firearm seasons but decided to not this year. The bucks were taken with my Bowtech Solution SD at 70lbs, TAW 484 - TOTA 125 gr vented, Vector ZMR 350. The Tom was taken with my Revolt X at 60lbs on performance, victory Vap SS 350, TAW 418 with SIK mechanical, bird literally took 3 steps and expired with out flopping.

HARD TO UNDERAPPRECIATE THAT AN animal shot threw belly and broadhead ends in chest cavity, that animal has holes in multiple sections of colon, hole in diaphragm and holes in chest tissue. regardless of hitting heart - or not. and yet survived initial trauma as well as potential sepsis. That is absolutely amazing.

2 animals in 23. Phase 4 33 29/70. Black bear in Canada with a440 gr arrow with 2.0 sevr complete pass through and a MASSIVE ENTRY. Went 20 yards. I'm also shooting grim reaper broadheads - which your channel, Josh, and Dan, all influenced that decision. I didn't get my target buck this year (but i have recent trail cam pictures so i'm thrilled he's still out there) but i did harvest an early season doe with a grim reaper carni-four. Wow. Full pass through, 15 yard shot, and the blood trail was so good i could've jogged on it. I have carni-four and fixed micro hades. The micro hades fly very well and i love them, but i am totally sold on the carni-four's at this point. Matthews phase 4 33. 65# 29" 430 Grain TAW. Victory VAP 300 spine.

From Treestand mid body 2” behind back rib. Looked perfect. 5 pm. Minimal blood. Went in next morning with a tracker & dog. Never found. Tracker concluded deer was still alive. Michigan city doe hunt 2023 so far: Seven adult does all shot with the Exodus 125 grain Full blade. I cherry pick my shots because of the close proximity of the houses. Typical shots I’m taking are slightly quartering away at 20 yards or closer, 3” to 4” behind shoulder angle into off shoulder. Every deer shot this year died within 50 yards, most around 25 to 35 yards, with a blood trail Stevie Wonder could follow. Complete pass through although 4 of the 7 arrows were broken because of breaking the off shoulder on the way out. I like these heads so much, because you can practice with the arrow you are actually shooting before the hunt, replace the sharpe blades with duller ones that already killed a deer, then replace with the sharp blades when you go out hunting. Equipment: Phase 4, at 60lbs, Rip HV 350, 29 drawn length, and of course Exodus 125 grain head. These broadheads are bullet proof, I have yet to damage a head even shooting through shoulders and breaking leg bones. Great video Tim, I like these types of broadhead reviews.

Great video guys. I have always been told the 5 grains per pound rule when it comes to arrow weight. Was it safe for MFJJ to shoot 360 out of an 85 lb bow? Anyways, I shot my elk with a Bowtech SX80 29" 80 lbs. 515gr arrow with Iron Will 125s single bevel st 40 yards. He spun when the arrow was in flight. I hit centimeters behind the scap and exited near the last rib on the offside and stuck the arrow in the dirt. He ran for about 20 seconds and i heard him crash at about 200 yards. The blood trail was not particularly great. A 2 out of 5 at best. Keep up the great work

Whitetail and turkey. QAD Exodus 100 grain. Can’t fault them. Easy to get scary sharp with the stay sharp sharpener, incredible flight, devastating and good blood, nearly indestructible, reusable. Although this year I’m using Magnus black hornet and stingers because they are also awesome and their warranty can’t be beat.

I got my first vertical bow kill this year. Used a bowtech carbon one 29.5/70 victory rip xv with nock on wraps and their pm-23 vanes, 75 grain collar and 100 grain 2.0 sevr. Taw is about 416-420. Whitetail perfectly broadside at 25 yards from the ground with no blind. Complete pass through and dropped 25 yards from where i shot it. @timconnor13 I had 2 kills this year shooting a vxr 75lb mods 29.5 draw with 465 total weight riptkos. Controversial part is I used rage hyperdermic 2” mechanical. Both elk and deer died within 80 yards.. but what I think many are missing is I shot my elk high lungs and got no blood trail but like Josh said poured out when we were dressing out. My deer I shot thru the shoulder low and full pass thru at 30 yards finding my arrow in a tree 5’ behind it with a massive blood trail. Point being sometimes the shot placement matters on the blood trail..

Pretty cool 😎 and interesting 🤔 that both you and Elk Shape/Dan dropped a broadhead update video at the same time. Must be something in the air up in the Spokane, WA region. lol 😆 Except his was about the IW 150 Single Bevel on his blizzard 🌨️ buck 🦌 and yours was about both you and MFJJs experience on animals throughout the 2023 season. I found it both interesting 🧐, informative and enjoyable. Josh with the Big Draw Energy can practically use any arrow setup he wants. I know that Nick Mundt from Bone 🦴 Collector killed a bull elk with a 350 grain arrow with a G5 Megameat. So basically shoot what you want just use a higher quality broadhead that flies well out of your bow setup 🏹. I shot a young doe (my first archery 🏹 animal) with a Victory RIP TKO Gamer 300s with a 100 grain Slick Trick Assailant total arrow weight 476 grains. I had the same experience as Josh when it came to a blood trail. Looked like someone dumped a bucket of red paint for 40 yards. Thanks 🙏 for sharing both your experiences from this year.

Some guys are in awe of a 1.5 - 2.0" two blade mechanical broadhead, but a tiny 4-blade Slick Trick Standard has a 2" total cut with 1" blades. The ST Magnum (same ferrule with 1 1/8" blades) would have a 2.25 total cut). You can't compare a one-dimensional cut of a two blade broadhead without acknowledging the two-dimensional cut of a 4-blade (or a 3-blade for that matter). I also think guys sometimes overlook the blade angle.

12:37 I do think that with a 2b mechanical, I see little benefit in shooting a 1.5" cut. You're blowing your load just deploying the blades more so than the limitation of a Sevr 2.0 causes with the pivoting blade.

I shot two whitetail bucks (first one was my first archery buck!) using 125 grain SEVR 1.75s on the front of RIP XV shafts with a 72 grain half-out (466 gr TAW). Both expired within 50 yards, but my arrows broke about 1/3 of the way up from the broadhead on both shots. Pretty happy with the SEVRs - they flew great and disintegrated the lungs. Not a ton of blood since my arrows broke but the entry holes were pretty good. Final verdict: Ecstatic with the end results, but lukewarm on the arrow shaft performance for hunting and will be going with something more durable like a RIP TKO next year.

I shot the xv’s this year with the magnus stingers and the 50 grain aluminum outsert that victory offers. I shot 3 bucks and a doe with that setup. All recovered but one buck. I’m not sure what happened, looked a little high but not terrible. Because of that I’m thinking about switching to a mechanical or hybrid. I only broke one arrow because the deer fell on it. I agree they’re not very durable but I’m wondering if the outsert maybe helped it stay together better than your halfout. I did however have problems with them bending though. All arrows I shot bent at the insert. I’m thinking about sticking with the xv’s because of the weight but trying the steel outsert that victory sells or maybe even the ethics kit.

@@chevyemert5655 Congrats on a great season. A mechanical would probably be great on deer for you. You're probably right about the half out contributing to my XVs breaking.. I just absolutely hate the ridges on the shok system that comes stock. I am gonna tinker around with the XVs I have left during the offseason and may look into that ethics kit too. Still will probably invest in some TKOs and hunt with them next year since I should *hopefully* draw an elk tag.

2014 xpedition xcentric 65lb 30” 446grains taw annihilator xl 100. Shot a Buck 22yds broadside slipped between the ribs entering and split one exiting. Deer ran 20ish yds stopped then crashed within 1-2 minutes of being hit. Entrance and exit were the same a hole in the middle u clouds put a fat finger in. Ground level high lung shot not great blood but he died fast within hearing distance. My son shot a doe with a 2013 Pse dna sp 50lbs 27 1/2” I’ll have to weigh the arrow. He also used the annihilator xl entrance liver back of lung exited through the other lung forward a bit so she was quartering away slightly. I think broke ribs on the way in and out I don’t remember. She ran 15 yds maybe then walked a few steps with another doe and fell over finally scaring the Sharpened them at a 44* instead of the flat 60* they come with. Got them extremely sharp and polished I think is why they die so fast and don’t run far. They know something happened but not sure what. When you’re quiet and stay concealed they’ll start coming back then fall over. My son could’ve shot another doe if he had a tag for another one in the area we were. One ran right into the spot where he shot his doe and stopped. Added note both arrows zipped right through and into the hill behind the deer.

The angle and placement is why he didn’t die. 26” of penetration is a lot for any setup and it would have mattered if I had 40” of penetration. I managed to place it where there wasn’t a vital organ period.

That's rough losing an animal like MFJJ did, but good that he got closure on it. I had a similar experience recently. I shot my personal best buck, 10 point whitetail, right at dusk. He was chasing a doe, I stopped him at 35 yards and he was quartered to me more than I thought and I nailed him in the shoulder with what looked like just a couple inches of penetration. He ran off with my arrow, no blood at the shot, no blood anywhere along where I saw him run. Next day a massive thunderstorm came through and dumped inches of rain. A few days later a neighbor called me and had found him dead and brought me the head. He made it over 600 yards and across several properties. I'm getting together with the landowner to check out the carcass and determine what I hit that was lethal. I'm glad to have closure, but that sure isn't how I wanted it to end. Still have a month and a half of deer season left to fill my 2nd buck tag and 10 doe tags.

3 blades in my experience don't tend to get the penatration. Those are the stories we all hate but the ones as bowhunters we really need to talk about. I hit a big whitetail at 45 yards same shot, tracked for 2 days, never recovered. angled away just like the elk, figured one lung. arrow plugged hole, so diaphragm never calapsed. I avoid that shot anymore

I'm very curious about this elk that had the arrow in it, like wouldn't it have went through the guts and you know what I mean? Probably cut some guts or say some of the liver or the lungs or something. If it was that close to the heart how could it go in there? Not get none of them vitals or cut any of them vitals and it still live like or where they cut and it just managed to heal. I'm just curious about it and trying to learn is all

Bro honestly I would like to see you guys try nap endgame it flys great for a fixed, and I guarantee it will hold its cut size on entry and exit. I consider a broad head that bends 30% to be a failure, I would rather entry and exit being both over an inch than shot a mech with a 0.5” entry and bad performance on exit

The stories of the damage done to different mechanical heads is the reason in over 50 years of arrow killing animals is why I’ve always used quality fixed blade heads. It appears the majority of mechanical heads can be considered a once and done expense. Which may be irrelevant considering all the other $ spent on everything hunting related? One meal in a diner can cost more than a quality mechanical.

I lost a bull last year with a Sevr 1.5 - shot twice not the heads fault. But hindsight I'd either go full 2.0" mechanical or a 3b fixed. I got no benefit from the 1.5 IMHO as I still didn't get pass through (445 grains at 294 fps). I'm sure given my typical 3b I'd got a pass through and just as much damage.

How on earth did that elk NOT die from that arrow ?. The way you described it, you passed through a lot of stuff !. Intestine, stomach, possibly liver and part of a lung. Typical damage for a hard quartering away shot. This puts a bizarre twist on "no man's land" ;)

just speculation but could have been from broken blades, blade erosion or a failed mechanical, also could have worked its way in further with time. but I agree, if you re broadhead was 2" above the heart that should have been a dead elk. Tried to prove a point and failed...
