I bought my Gtr1000 from a guy with 3 of them and did a refresh of all the brake fluids and pads an such before riding it and the fluid on the right hand res was the colour of old motor oil. Pure black sludge. But it's cleaned now and the brakes have worked well for two riding seasons now 👍
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 2 года назад
Ah very good! Nothing worse than muddy looking fluid! Did you check the pistons when you refreshed them? I've always popped my.pistons out every few years to give them a clean and check them! Glad to hear it's flying it :)

@BearsTrains 5 месяцев назад
I have found that the poor front brakes on my 02 was caused by brake dust/crud build up on the posts that the inner pads move along. The pad will gall and twist sideways a bit so that only half the pad is actually doing some work. Cleaned everything down and they are back to full functionality.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 5 месяцев назад
These ones were just in need of an overhaul, that could have certainly played in to it but the master cylinder, lines etc were all probably in need of replacement. The caliper pistons were also not saveable.

Main reason any "Phillips" screws on these strip out is because people use Phillips screwdrivers when they are not Phillips screws, they are J.I.S.
@TheGorillaBiker

Yep, I was using a JIS screwdriver myself I usually just call everything Philips as my brain is mush.

Surely Kawasaki has some 4 piston calipers that would bolt on like off a ZZR1100? They would be superior to rebuilt 2 pistons.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 3 года назад
They more than likely do but this is a much more cost effective way to get the bike to have brakes again :)
@GPz84
@GPz84 2 года назад
You could, but then you would need to redo the forks. Way too soft for hardcore front brakes.

Don’t get me wrong, enjoying your work on your friends ZG1000. Still, I’m going to offer some advice. I own a 2002 ZG1000, which I’ve had from 2007. Not matter what, always cover the fuel tank with something more than just a few crumpled/wadded shop paper towels. I like old bath towels, 2-3 depending how large the towels are. Covers the tank and more to boot. Brake fluid is horrible on paint, and sucks taste wise if you ever get some in your mouth (don’t~ it’s really bad! 🤮) Also, use a syringe of some sort (cheap, and easy to use) instead of shop towels to remove brake fluid from the reservoir. You are asking for trouble using paper towels to empty reservoir, I.e., dripping brake fluid everywhere & anywhere… . Use of a can of brake cleaner Willy nilly around the brake reservoir, splashing on the gauges, windscreen, tank doesn’t seem very wise. I’ve used electric contact cleaner in places that have paint/ plastics, as that as a solvent is much less harsh on items around the area you want cleaned. That’s my .02 cents for what it’s worth (.02 cents). I’ve been riding and working on my own MCs since 1986, and been wrenching on cars, military aircraft since 1974. Ya need to be cautious when using cleaning solvents. It pays off in the long run. Of course, if you really want clean, get some MEK…., but try not to breath the fumes, your kidneys will thank you. (That’s a joke, MEK is some heavy duty ~ potent solvent, and you WOULDN’T use it around a MC…. .) Good luck in your wrench turning 🤗😎👍

All of the above is entirely fair, however I've said it in many videos previously, and in comments(which of course I don't expect you to have seen/read) I use what I have to hand, I'm not a mechanic and was just helping a friend out who needed his bike useable again. I'd love to have a shelf full of options but I generally don't so make do with what I have. On the splashing and whatnot, I actually clean every bike very thoroughly after I work on them, but would never include this in a video as it would be a hassle to edit and I don't think people would watch it either! :) I had also broken my syringe that I'd usually use for draining things. Lastly, brake fluid tastes lovely what are you talking about :P I'd also recommend not squirting it in your eye :D

My CB450s used to have the same break line junction in it. It was just removed and I went for Hel Race lines straight to each side from the master cylinder as it was the same cost as the split line set up and one less place for it something to fail. Personally I went with Black lines because I’m boring. 😂
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 3 года назад
That's the joooob I was considering chopping the lump of uselessness out of it! Since it's been done before I shall follow suit :) Ah nothing wrong with black on certain colours but on this bike it'd just be wrong!
@garyhall9537
@garyhall9537 3 года назад
Need to see follow on vid. Firstly I always struggle getting the air out the system and secondly need to see the clean up of the piston. Last time I did it the piston still didn’t work to well. Bubble gum for the Craig, but can’t do that to a mate(can ye?)😂😂 black because I’m a boring old fart!!😂😂
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 3 года назад
It won't be too long coming :) Air out is grand for anything not linked, if you really have issues then hand the calipers up higher than the master cylinder and it's easier again, and prime the system by pulling down the brake fluid with a syringe! Yeah the piston ideally I'd change but it's not my call tis the man who's paying for the bits :) Haha I absolutely can :P but carbon purple won the vote which suits the bike too :)

So where's the best place to source these brake parts braided lines, rebuild kits etc ?
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 3 года назад
Braided line I get direct from hel performance usually. Rebuild kits I've gotten off freeman motorcycles, pat in the parts department has been as cheap as online and I prefer giving business locally, but otherwise I've gotten stuff off eBay, cmsnl.com and anywhere that had what I needed in the past :)

Brake fluid and break cleaner all over the place and he just wipes it down😬. There goes the paint..... and never clamp calipers that way in a vice. Much easier to squeeze the pistons out via the brake lever.

Haha not everything I do I record lad it was given a proper clean once I was finished 😂 And all the paint is still intact as of today 😂

Also I see you edited the comment there. I've learned a lot of this by myself reading mostly service manual, a few I've read have said it's better to use a piston removal tool, not that I don't appreciate your comment but I will say your tone and the way you're talking down to me is why I'd never listen and learn from someone who talks to people as you do. I've taken your comment on board so hopefully you can do the same for me, exactly what you've said, conveyed in a helpful way, might actually teach someone something. That said I'll clamp calipers in a vice when needed, any particular reason why I shouldn't?
@danielhalsema
@danielhalsema 2 года назад
I didn't mean to talk you down. Maybe you Just read it that way. You did exactly the same using those laughing emojies 😉 Clamping calipers in a vice can easely leaves markings on the calipers.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker 2 года назад
Fair enough, I actually laugh a lot when I speak in general I probably do over do it on emojis...had to resist using on there, and now, and now. 😂 I failed. Ah yeah they're very lightly clamped though and I use ribber vice jaws or a cloth
