Was having heart palpitations when you was reading out the customers note, then you see the state of the phone with prior tech damage and you think the worst. But everything was down to a bent pin in a connector! You make this look well to easy Jason, soldering back on that cap looked like a walk in the park 😆 Hard sometimes to grasp how small some of these components are when you look at everything under a microscope. Was repairing an Apple watch yesterday and whilst removing a screw with some tweezers it pinged off somewhere, I looked for a good 45 minutes but I don't think I am finding that screw again or I will once I have built the watch completely back together again 😆

Most likely a full charge job for me ; as they say, you're charging for the years, not the minutes. You found what others didn't and it wasn't just "pure luck", the experience from years of working on these things helps in so many ways that cannot be clearly defined. People are paying for the outcome, not how you got there.

For an instance such as this, do you still charge a data recovery fee? I’ve had ones in the past similar and I usually just charge no power fee since didn’t take much time. Curious your approach. Thanks!
@ststele
@ststele 10 месяцев назад
This was no power fee + a little more for the "to be safe" backup. It does depend on the situation though. Some people would want full blown "data recovery" no matter what. Many times I've tried to downgrade from recovery to repair in similar situations and the customer is distraught as they've already almost lost their data and want the full recovery service. Those customers sometimes even offer to pay more even if it has been easy. Flat rate recovery service is rough on ones conscience with devices like this for sure.

I would have transferred out the data before messing with anything else in there. A lot of grief comes from people not backing up data, but apple kind of fixed this with cloud storage. I have 2 Linux mostly pcs on a gig network. I copy 2 folders to the 2nd every now and then. When the folder gets full I burn cdroms and put it in a stack with a file listing and the unique name of the rom. I have a 5C, a 6S, and an 11 PRO. I did not update the IOS on the 6S because I mostly use the 6S to take pictures. What happens is it connects to my router through wireless and I mount a PC share folder. Then in 'photos' on the iphone I save into files and select my windows share (using linux). Then all the pictures and movies show up on my pc. In all newer versions of IOS you can't copy pictures to windows shared any more just for your protection. In that case like in the 11 pro, In the 11 Pro I create a folder on my phone, copy all the pictures to that folder from photos. Then I compress that folder to a zipfile and share it to 'Tapmedia File manager'. The I use that app's web sync to share it over wifi tcpip.
@ststele
@ststele 10 месяцев назад
Very good point here. Also my setup is quite similar. I transfer all devices to a file server and then back that up. I was using Google drive for a long while but didn't like not having control of my own data and got sick of getting ads based on videos that I had literally just synced. How in the heck can they process all that data??!! Now everything I have is hosted by Linux virtual machines owned by me. Most run on a hypervisor in a rack in the next room. Very much love that 👍😀

My first long screw damage was on a Toshiba laptop, it went right through the board where the CD drive was, I stopped when I heard the crunching, but it was too late. I had an iPhone 3G when they first came out and I have to admit that I was impressed but what I did loathe was how awkward they made it to transfer files off or onto the phone. I did *not* like iTunes and apart from an old MacBook I had to get so I could familiarise myself with the software (I did IT support and some idiots had MacBook because _they are shiny_ and that was the number one reason given) I have *never* and *never shall* own a crApple product ever again.
@ststele
@ststele 10 месяцев назад
Thank you for commenting @johannesdesloper8483 & @josephking6515! Here we are with the iPhone 15 and transferring files to and from an iPhone is still just as awkward! Even worse, unless it's a 15 *PRO*, the USB-C is throttled to USB 2.0 speeds like the lightning models! It's like a big giant middle finger to the regulations that forced them to use USB-C on iPhones to begin with.. So if a customer doesn't spend the extra $ for the Pro model, it's still USB 2.0 --- this was new 23 years ago! :-o

Oh man, sorry to hear about the trouble! I'm worried I'm not the best person to ask for this. Although I do work on a ton of Samsung phones, I have not ran into this issue yet and it sounds like it may be very tricky to solve! The getting warm thing is likely normal. The cellular service issue is something that I likely could solve but would need to troubleshoot to figure it out. If it wasn't for the impact that seems to have triggered the issue, I would go after software problems first! I'm hopeful it may just be a dislodged/shorted component inside if you would like to send it in. It would be best to register on our website for that: www.ststele.com/mail-in

This is a USB current meter that I got from Union Repair some years ago. Unfortunately it looks like they are no longer selling it or any equivalent model.

Can you recover data from an Android?? My local repair guy tells me that my cpu is dead. Can you recover from an encrypted emmc? Please im literally dying, it had 49K photo/videos.

@@tejaskhokhar9359 hey sorry I didn't see notifications for your previous replies. I think it is worth keeping the phone in a safe place in hopes of it one day being recoverable. It may be a good idea to check with some other data recovery businesses to see if they could help. I'm really sorry we can't help when not having a good CPU.

In this video I'm using a very old and very dull xacto blade that I've had since I was probably 13 or 14yrs old. Not sure what # the blade is as it's too rusted to read. On newer phones and better sealed older ones, I use the Refox RS50.

@@ststele Thanks for the info! Using an exacto blade myself but always afraid it would be sharper than I think and damage something I’ll look into the Refox 550

Yah! They actually get to be quite a bit larger than this too! These little devices are just magical until they fail.. I can't imagine trying to keep my life's collection on one device. I empty my devices every week or even more often!

@@ststele the downside is that i have approx 30-40K pictures and photos i need to sort and remove copies and so on.. It makes my nas go down on hes knees and pray for mercy (and crash after a while) when i load that folder too many times. Its at least 14 years of backups and saved pictures and photos. But the upside is that i can move that folder to any device or HDD that can handle the size, so its easy to keep it safe.

Lol, yep. Or even setup to sync to a local file server automatically or any other method one chooses because it's Android and has that freedom! Apple is a pain in the neck to setup such automated backups and only works if you leave an app open to do it (ie Google drive, Dropbox...). I much prefer Android for mission critical stuff.
