I came across a 1985 Honda Shadow VT1100C. All the electrical ciruits on the bike work, except the horn circuit. In this video I show how I troubleshoot the circuit to arrive at the problem preventing the horns from working.

Wow …I like how you went thru this and explained each step. It’s also a plus that you showed your meter settings for each check. I have always been mechanically inclined but electronics and electrical circuits seem to perplex me sometimes. The horn circuit on my Ducati has been malfunctioning and your video helped me track down and solve the issue with confidence. Thank you very much!

That's very thoughtful for you to write out the wiring diagram. I, too, usually start at the end device, mainly because an end device is usually easy to identify, and because if you show it works then you can use it to do drop testing. In a car the horn is run by a horn relay. Evidently the lower amperage for a bike does not require a relay.

Well done , I did notice you had a 100 mv drop from one horn to the other, I suspect the horn that was left attached does have some corrosion down line.

What causes motorcycle horn to sound on its own. Sometimes when the motorcycle is running the horn just honks by itself without the switch being pressed.

I am pretty sure you want them facing the other way if they aren't going to be behind something to block wind. On freeway wind will ne blasting into them and it wont be as loud. There is a reason the factory mounted where they did.

Know if at 5:06 if the posts on the horn care if the positive or negative wire is attached to which one, or it doesn't matter and they can go on either?

Mine had gone open circuit due to corrosion inside the horn, here's what fixed it - remove the adjustment screw, fill with electrical contact cleaner, take a pick and gently depress / agitate the contact inside through the screw hole until the internal resistance goes to 0 ohms, readjust screw so it makes sound again and you're done.

If my 12V battery is currently only pushing about 8V could that be the reason my horn doesn't work? Or should I still hear something on a new horn?

I have a 97 and the horn and directionals stopped working at the same time. Running lights die one side when you try to hit the switch, horn just doesn't work. Anyone have an idea if this is a relay issue? I can't find a bad fuse, maybe a bad ground?

4:52 non the horn is all together and the plunger is pushing the points open, opening the circuit so these two prongs are not connected. you should not get continuity. And actualy the electro magnet should be pushing the bell's plonger up until the point close and release the electromagnet field etc

I crashed my bike and my horn want working so I went out and bought a new horn I plugged it in and nothing sounded so I unplugged it and switched the two plugs and still nothing. .. help please

I am about to put a rectifier circuit to my horn as my battery has died due to very less usage. Do I need to worry about polarity of the terminals on the horn? or is it just like a speaker where any terminal works.

Polarity could matter if your horn has electronic components and is not a simply electromechanical device. You really need to study the wire schematic before connecting wires if you are unsure.

it worked on first try but i will have to remove the capacitor as its causing a lag.
