Yeah, that’s a VA0 which was the launch version for Japan. At the last moment Sega discovered some kind of a timing issue in a certain mode that required that extra clock board to be bodged on. I have a VA6 that works for a while until you power off and back on. Essentially, it doesn’t work when warmed up. Can’t figure it out. :(
Thanks for the info. That's very interesting. I hope you get that issue resolved. It would seem more of a cap problem if it didn't work until warmed up but I have no idea if the problems don't start until it's warmed up. That's a head scratcher.
@@wilsvgaddiction4456 Caps were replaced at the same time the 3BP (Triple Bypass) was installed which makes it even more of a troubleshooting pain. Was it like that all along but I never tried to boot when warm? Did the cap job cause this? Did the 3BP cause this? Did the EMI/RF shield momentarily shorting on the back of the 3BP cause this? I was out hunting for a replacement VA6 yesterday so I can send that to the owner. The second cap job is the part I resent the most. Guess we’ll see if it develops a similar issue.
I have one of these Mega Drives; that is indeed factory. As for your VA6, maybe try adding thermal paste to the voltage regulators, or try upgrading them (pretty much the first things I could think of).
@@ZonicMirageYeah, I replaced them with the high efficiency version and swapped in known-good originals from another Genesis back when I was swapping every component I could to figure it out. Still does it years later and almost the only things original are the CPUs, VDP, and I/O chip. Never got around to isolating which of those was responsible.
I have One genesis game that loads up the 'Licensed By' page then goes black. Cleaned it up, tried every way of inserting it and everything... Nothing. Any advice on what it could be? Seems the console is fine given that it plays all other games.
@@wilsvgaddiction4456 I'm doing well! Life has been crazy. Have a 2 year old little boy now! Moved south an hour and have a 6 acre plot of land we are slowly working to transform. Miss the hell out of you and think about you often. Really glad to hear you are doing well!!
Hello 🙂 I own a japanese Mega Drive 1, the sound works but the screen remains black. My RGB cable is already modified to play correctly japanese models. The PCB is clean. Do you have any clue about it ? Thank you!
I barely ever work on mega drives, not many come my way. Will you have such a steady hand for soldering small wires onto traces, I need more milk in my diet or something 🤷♂️
Yeah... its actally a 12 Pro Max but the light is so shit in my house that the video turns out really grainy. I think the editing program scales it down too (I've had it for 11 years w/o upgrading the version).
