Thank you for this video. Not only did you save me from having to cut off all my valves, you made some comments about debris in the system that helped me understand why my system needed some maintenance in the first place.
Great video, Gary. I followed your procedure three times with a no luck. I decided to go one step further and replace the solenoid valve since I had purchased it with the new valve. Problem solved! I guessing the solenoid had sand inside which did not allow it to seal. Hope this helps another rookie!
Thank you for taking the time to do this. I am a GC but seldom work on sprinklers. Today I am going on a service call for a leaking sprinkler valve and this really helped.

Man, this is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I have the exact same sprinkler setup that I installed by myself a few years ago. It’s been leaking for over a month so I had to shut it off. I was dreading having to dig another hole and replace everything. This will be my weekend project! Thanks!!!
Thank you for being a great person and showing people how to do this! Most people nowadays are so greedy. You saved me so much money and I’m grateful!! 🙏🏼💖
Great video - I need to replace 4 Lawn Genie valves - am going to use this same method - not having to cut, glue and risk a leak is a huge PLUS ! Thanks so much for posting this.
Stunt Driver, glad I could help you out. If you get a chance feel free to Subscribe to my Channel as I have 40 other sprinkler videos. Also, let me know if you have any questions along the way.😎
This was so amazing.... You saved my day!!! I was dreading the valve replacement for weeks... finally one last one broke and I had to deal with it. If I knew this was so easy, I would have done it weeks ago. YOU ARE MY HERO!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
Mine, glad you overcame your fear and found that you’re fully capable of handling this project on your own. Don’t forget to Subscribe to our Channel it really helps us grow ✌️
Thanks, Gary. I used your tip a year ago and watched this again today because I have another fix to do now. This is oh so much easier than re-doing the manifold.
@@garyssprinklerrepair Had to replace another one today. Watched again to make sure I did it right. Hey, I'm an old guy with CRS (Can't Remember Sh_t).
Thank you very much for posting this video. I have the same system at home. Followed your steps to disassemble the valve, checked and cleaned gaskets and a filter and problem was solved! You saved me money by not calling gc. Thank you!
Ruben Haro you’re welcome, easy as 1,2,3 right? Glad it helped you out. If you get a chance be sure to Subscribe and tap notifications to help the channel grow. Also we do monthly Giveaways
I got a leaky breaker lid and this video just soothed my worst fears! I don't have to take the whole valve off!! I have also heard that what you term a "breaker lid" may also be called a "plunger cap" or just "valve cap", any-whooo...Thanks for the vid very helpful!!
Saving people helping people save money was the reason I started my Channel. Hope you took a minute to Subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss out when new contents added.✌️
This video was so insightful. I couldn't not find any resource information on the Rainbird site. Thank you for making this video! Based on the views and comments, it has helped a LOT of people.
Glad I found this...I was thinking the same way - just replace the top parts of the valve rather than cutting pipe and having to glue things together again. I didn't even think about reusing the solenoid! Great tips...I know what I am doing this weekend.
Thanks Daniel, good luck on your repair. Don’t forget to turn the water off 1st. 😁 Hope you took a Minute to Subscribe to our Channel, it really helps the channel grow on YT
@@garyssprinklerrepair So here is one wrinkle...Rain Bird hasn't made the valves I have since 2008 (APAS 075). You can't find them very easily...found one on eBay for $45! I grabbed it quick!
Man, what I would give to have my valves standing up in the air like this and not in an arm pit deep, black widow infested mud hole! That said, I really appreciate your videos! I forgot if the spring went up or down, and you answered that!
splibb you could always cut them and 90 the pipes up. Subscribe if you get a chance and tap notifications it really helps the Channel with placement. PS you’re comment was hella funny, same thing I think when someone wants me to work on one.
Thank you so much! I have the exact valve which just won't stop hissing at us. The valve is leaking. So I was deciding whether to replace the parts here and there, but I decided to do the exact thing you've taught me. Thank you...
Always awesome to hear a feel good story. Glad everything worked out for you. Hope you took a minute to Subscribe to our Channel for more help in the future.👍
By the way, the warning about the shut off valve not working was like a psychic prediction.... The ball valve did not work at all and when I checked it like you said to the water was still on. I simply turned the water to the house off and I was good to go, and I did not take a shower and turn my work area into a mud pit. Great video man, pro tips from start to finish.

Martin Bobek hi , saw your comment today was wondering what you meant. (Garys’ Sprinkler Repair Itrigtrol) on BIGMIG comment? Were you saying you prefer Irritrol valves? They used to be my favorite until they started not holding up to the test of time.

Great news , glad everything worked out. Just a heads up if the screws come loose again your water pressure might be too high. We have more info on our RU-vid Channel. Subscribe for more content. Thank for the awesome comment btw.👍
Too obvious...heheh. So obvious that I never would have thought of it, myself. Thanks, man. You saved me hours of frustration. It worked for an old Lawn Genie valve. Fortunately, they don't seem to have changed the design in a couple decades and replacement was straightforward.
@@garyssprinklerrepair @tppbila2155 0 seconds ago @garyssprinklerrepair Yup...liked and subscribed. I want back all the months of life I've wasted over the last twenty-four years keeping alive the kludged sprinkler system the previous owner put in this place. The stories I could tell...
Because I give 2 yr. warranty on my valves I choose to replace the entire valve. This is however a really inexpensive, quick fix with no glue and simple household tools. Glad you liked it.🤙
Thank you so much for this video. We have rainbird valves too (I didn't even know the name of them prior to this) and this video just saved us a huge headache. My Wife's Uncle is a pro landscaper and has been helping us with fixing up our sprinkler system during the weekends. We recently split a couple of the zones which didn't have high enough pressure (too many sprinklers per zone). I guess that one of the very old valves we have is having trouble handling the increased pressure now and got stuck in an on state (couldn't get it to turn off from the control box). I shut off the water but I couldn't get access to the shut-off valve for just that set of sprinklers (I think it's pretty well buried) so I ended up shutting off the water to the house to get it to stop so we had no water at all. After watching this video I took it apart as you showed. I took a few small rocks out of it and made sure the part that moves on the inside of the screw-on cap was not getting stuck, then put it back together and then it finally shut itself off after it ran for a few seconds when I turned the water back on. I'm leaving the system shut off until the weekend when her Uncle will be back to continue working on this. We'll likely just end up replacing those parts on that one as I don't trust it at this point. Thanks again!
It’s normal for the valve to turn on again when the water is turned back on after a repair, once it reaches 15 psi it then shuts down. Glad to help, don’t forget to Subscribe to our Channel it really helps us too.✌️
been doing the same thing for the large brass valves and they sell the replacement valve without the body...for $75 each...LOL I always change out the solenoid and or diaphram while I'm doing this. No sense in using old parts in your new valve. Also, on these sprinkler systems it doesn't make any difference which way you reattach the wires for the valve, they work either way. This is a great video as it shows the basics of simply replacing parts
Yes, some like the plastic valves too. We don’t see many brass valves anymore here in Cali. To each their own, either way sometimes swapping the tops saves the customer some money and the contractor time. ✌️
Yep,,,that was what I did exactly today!! I have the Lawn Genie, and it was 6 screws to remove, and took the whole inner and outer out and replace the brand new one ...no need to cut, glue...!
Thank you for the tips, I personally prefer to replace all parts with the same size and labels so there's no confusion next time replacement is needed.
Wonderful video! Very helpful, thorough, and useful. You helped two senior citizens (female at that) replace and troubleshoot a valve and save the hassle of explaining the symptoms to an English-speaking-challenged gardener and have to pay for a full valve replacement that wasn't necessary. Just out of curiosity, though, the bleed screw from the old valve blew out and we couldn't thread it back. (...which is why we replaced the top parts of the valve.) It did not appear to be stripped, nor did the threads of where it went. However, it already had teflon plumber's tape on it, which makes us think it had come out before and someone put it back. Two questions: 1. Would a new part from the factory have teflon tape on it already? 2. If a bleeder screw shoots out, can it be put back? It doesn't matter now since we replaced the top parts of the valve as explained in your brilliant video, but we are curious. The new valve's instructions make it a point to emphasize only to turn a bleeder screw one turn, suggesting it shouldn't be turned more or it might come out and not go back. Thanks so much for your video and help.
Hi there I hope I could answer your questions. 1. It does not come with Teflon tape from factory. The reason why they put Teflon tape is at one point the plastic threads were not holding it in place. 2. In my experience these are $25 plastic valves. Absolutely nothing wrong with plastic in fact I like them better than the metal one's.. especially for residential use. But that small knob in particular is very sensitive.... Hope that helps..
Sorry I never saw your comment, sometimes RU-vid screens my comments. As Francisco mentioned the valves don’t come with Teflon tape, they’re easy to cross thread if unscrewed to far. Swapping the valves top definitely fixed the issue.✌️ thx Francisco

Fair price, for a contractor if he's replacing the entire valve. He wouldn't be able to warranty just swapping the tops. Glad I was able to help you save some $$. Hope you get a chance to Subscribe for more help in the future.
Great Video! Funny, I came to this same conclusion when my existing valves had been changed many times and there was no more room to cut the pvc manifold as it had every inch filled with slip/slip connectors. I had three brand new valves, so I did the same thing you did in the video. I also attempted to get a diaphragm rebuild kit first, but got the wrong ones. Nothing was bad with the valve bodies. I love this method! And the fact you are using a commercial grade valves....much better! Hey, I have three zones and two work ok, but the third has really low pressure and I cannot figure out why. Two of the three are at a 4 foot elevation above the valves in an upper yard. I have started removing heads to flush them to see if they are clogged, but so far the two of the heads flush clear and water runs slowly out of the body. My next test will be to put a pressure gauge on the hose bib right next to the sprinkler valves, but I suspect since 2 of 3 have pressure it wont be a inlet pressure issue. Why would 2 of 3 heads flow ok and the one not flow well? Thanks for your video, it is a great idea
Many things can cause the issue with low flow. If the other two zones have the same amount of sprinklers and operate great, then first thing I would look for is a cracked pipe. Turn all of the sprinkler heads off on the set with low flow, then turn it on and let it run for a few minutes. Next, walk around and look for a really wet area, there’s your crack. Let me know how it goes.
You were right! Yes it was a cracked pvc pipe. Repairing it was a challenge because the po had a head coming off the main supply and two 3-ways off that section. Any time splicing into a buried section is tight unless I use an expanding repair piece. Maybe a video for the future?
I’ll send you a link to watch a video I made on using the telescoping repair coupling. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nf3351WRdGY.htmlsi=cn1FQr7au69pDKkW Here is the correct link.

Very helpful video, thank you. This method will surely save a lot of work I was getting ready to use your method to repair a valve for one zone (zone #3) that continually leaks from a sprinkler head when the system is off. To find out which valve was for which zone, I manually turned the solenoid on for each of the 3 valves. The problem is, zone #1 now won't turn off. I returned the solenoid back to the off position, but the sprinklers still run for that zone, so I had to turn off the water supply. I removed the solenoid and put it back on, but it still just runs Any ideas as to what the problem could be? Should I just replace that one as well?
Thanks Bud, most likely the O-ring on the solenoid is either torn or stretched some. I would just swap the top on that one too. Be forewarned when turning the water back on sometimes if using a Irritrol (or Lawn Genie) they will pop their diaphragms out if the waters turned on too fast. Not the case with Rainbird. Double check that the manual bleed screw is also closed. Hope you take a minute to Subscribe. 👍
