Fixing an oscillating fan.. kind of.

Trying to repair the oscillating feature on a Dowell floor fan. Learn a little about what makes your fan automatically turn left to right.
Although the repair was a failure, I've located the broken part and you might find it interesting to see how the fan works and what part broke.
This is a Dowell Philippines floor fan with 3 speed settings. The main function of the fan works as expected but the oscillating feature no longer works.
After taking the fan apart and getting access to the rear gearbox, I was able to find a nylon gear / shaft is broken. I tried to repair the part with super glue and a 2-part epoxy but neither were able to create a strong bond.
Ultimately, I need to find a replacement part instead of trying to fix the existing one. I've already reached out to Dowell to see if they can supply the part.
I also discovered another problem which is the rotary 3-speed control switch. Inside, the PCB has broken which causes reliability issues. A replacement rotary switch is a common part and sells for around P120 ($2.50)

Nice video.. After putting super glue, add a metal pin or small nail on the center or hollow part and fill it up with hot glue or epoxy to make it stronger.. I've made cheap repairs like this with broken fan parts bracing it with metal and hot glue ( quick repair) and it still works! :-)

Nice idea. I hadn't thought of filling the hollow section but of course there's no reason for it to be hollow so filling it should add some good strength. Thanks :)

I've had good luck plastic welding some plastics that just will not glue up. Option 2, try the ABS "glue" for bonding water pipes together. That stuff more or less melts the plastic. In a way it's like the plastic welding with no heat involved.
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 лет назад
Hmm maybe I'll try that ABS glue first since it's likely to be less destructive than a soldering iron or other plastic welding choice. Thanks for the tip!

Also, if you can, try drilling shallow, minute holes (1.5 - 2mm) on both pieces to be joined so that the adhesive will have recesses to seep into.

You might be able to use a soldering iron to melt the broken part back together.

Learned about the wormgear part. What about drilling a small hole through the centre and use a toothpick (dowl) that way you are not relying on just the two surfaces to stick to each other.

Im in Malaysia btw so at least i can get the name and buy it on line we are under EMCO so we can’t go out to the DIY shop to buy. Please help.

This is me fixing fans constantly because I'm tired of trying to come up with money to buy a quality fan but I don't like the fan spinning and I might look at somehow keeping the fan from moving, that's my problem. The bearings need oil the bushings on the fans that freeze up need replacing, I haven't done this yet and I'm not sure I have enough knowledge on how to remove and replace bushings also the capacitors failing #1 problem and the replacements are made in China, they last about a year if that.

I tried a 2 part epoxy without any luck but I'm sure there's several types out there and maybe one would work better than the other for this type of material.

what you could have done, was to use a soldering iron and melt the two plastics together on all 4 sides, and that should hold really well ...............

Try to make this part with 3D printer if it is not available. Make it with POM (Polyoxymethylene), that is the strong plastic. One question; I have disassemble the same gearbox and when I pull the white plastic axle one ball ejected and jumped into the garden in grass, but some other part also jumped into the garden. The other ball and one spring is still in the shaft and I have it, but one ball jumped out and one part unidentified also. Do you have picture of inside the gearbox what else could be accept one spring and two balls?. My fan is Airmax 2000 and has the same motor and gearbox bought somewhere 20 years ago.

Did you think to glue a metal rod inside the plastic to act as a splint Havent seen a 3d printer vid in a while, is it still working?
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 лет назад
Yeah I tried something like that with a slim bolt but didn't really help. 3D printer is still good, just feeling lazy to model the part because that would take some time to get right.

manufacturers deliberately make DIY impossible so you have to buy twice. Don't give up you'll find the solution.
@Turrican60
@Turrican60 2 года назад
It's not really about manufacturers making DIY repairs "impossible" so that you're forced to buy again. On the contrary, it's mostly centred around the design stage so that the prohibitive costs of tooling to produce these intricate parts are reduced as much as possible. That's why plastics are used wherever possible, even though zinc alloy parts, or similar, would do a better job. The lower the cost, the more saleable the product, therefore the bigger the profit. That's business.

there is a electricfan repair shop if you're near in pasig (simbahan) that sells all kinds of e. fan parts, had the same parts broken before that they have replacement parts available.

if its nikon or standards brands, you can get one easily on their service centers. else, there should be a electrifan repair shops in you area. my standard fan (i mean standard which is the brand), still works fine until now for about 8-9years now, every 2 years or less, it needs replacement like the capacitor or need to replace the copper on the motor. which all of this cost less than 200 pesos, a huge savings if you compare it to a brand new unit. I never had a issue against the turning functionality of my fan, it works just fine until now.

one reason to support 3d printing, its a waste somthing goes to junk because of a tiny bit of plastic, only plus is you can use the fan, just wont rotate. my 40 year old fan died this week, the back bearing had given out, nothing i could do

So I have one advise to your problem with your floor fan, change your fan motor to motor with two ball bearing motor and choose motor with electric oscilating , no have much problem your fan ;)
@xhappy425

you can make a 3d print version of the whole thing :D
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 лет назад
It's certainly a possibility. One downside with a 3d printed version is that I have to model the part first. Although it's not that complex a part. The other downside is that it wont be easy for someone else to replicate the repair in the future unless they also have access to a 3D printer. But regardless, it might be the perfect time for a new video using the 3d printer :)

The only part you'll find is out of a new one if still on shelves...if you know what I mean. Companies make stuff to fail. They deserve a RTV return to vendor.
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 лет назад
Yeah it's annoying. If you look at this fan, most of it is metal and fairly heavy duty. Then when you get to the gearbox it suddenly changes to plastic or nylon which is likely to break eventually. I have emailed Dowell PH to see if they can provide the replacement part. I also have the option of 3D printing the part but I'd have to model it first and since I'm not great at that, it would likely take a few revisions. If I had a lathe and all the tools, I could probably replicate it in metal :P
