So what do you call the skin which surrounds the rest of the nail, not the proximal nail fold? I always thought the cuticle was all around the nail!!! This is where the first confusion comes in. I cannot find a term for that surrounding tissue. That is where most of my problems are.

That was a very interesting read. For years I have been removing the keratinized PNF believing it was the cuticle as this was what I was told. I am a cuticle picker and I have now learnt that I am a PNF picker, no wonder my nail plate is so horrible.

Thank you so much for this education, you are helping me so much. I think due to acrylics for so long and having them removed improperly the skin around my nails is hard and is actually painful. I am trying to find a good nail tech who does manicure the way you do. Do you have any advice on how to find a good nail technician ? Thank you so much. ❤ Nicole

Just an FYI for the male voice talking about vitamins and supplements… I worked for a pharmacy and the pharmaceutical owner told me that the majority of the products on the market are not fda regulated and they don’t actually contain exactly what they list on the label. He said when he or his family need a supplement (that the doctor recommended for them to take) he would only buy the brands that take part in the 3rd party USP testing which is an impartial testing program that brands can voluntarily take part in. Only a small percentage of the companies on the market actually have that accreditation from submitting their products to testing…. Look into that folks!

Nature Made is a brand of vitamins and suppliments found in many American grocery stores and pharmacies. It is USP verified (a 3rd party verification). 🙂 I also noticed many products with labels of 3rd party verification at Vitamin Shoppe. I haven't checked myself, but I'd also suggest GNC, or any other health food store or grocery store that heavily markets healthy living and healthy eating.

This is how a real manicurist takes care of the hands, as if you would the rest of your body. Nails techs just want to make it look good, and do a fast job get paid but really over time you're just destroying the natural part of your nail that takes so long to grow back. I appreciate your patience and your craft in doing a service the proper way. I am so glad I found someone on RU-vid who is a naturalist! thank you😊

PS. I agree with the multivitamin comment. There is a lot of much-too-little in multivitamins. If you need iron or vitamin D, you’re not going to get near enough in a multivitamin. Everyone in the northern hemisphere should take 2000IU vitamin D (unless they are told otherwise by their doc) needed from an early age especially for women and bone health. If low in iron, establish that there is not a malabsorption syndrome like Celiac or pernicious anemia, and have vitamin B12 checked. Consume foods high in iron content to avoid having to take constipating iron supplements. That’s my $0.02 worth today! 🥰

I found your channel last evening, I want to tell you I think your nails are so beautiful… I stopped going for manicures 8 years ago. I love doing my own nails, and since I have , I no longer have living skin around my cuticles. When I used to go for a bi monthly manicure, my living skin was getting thicker and thicker.. I like to keep them short. I also do not go for pedicures anymore either… I never use polish on toe nails Besides the money I save, I love that I have no more living skin around my cuticles. I now know from watching your videos that it’s important to keep your nails very moisturized, with the right product. I am vegan so I worry about deficiencies, although blood work always comes back ok.. I subscribed♥️

You convinced me to try Dazzle Dry…I just ordered from Amazon a mini kit with all the steps…It is true, during the pandemic I stopped wearing nail polish and my nails have NEVER looked healthier. I use oil at least once a day on and near the nail, and also bought the Germanikure files….My grandmother did nails and I learned from her to let nails go polish-free regularly and to not cut the cuticle! Also, I am going to look for the Cien nail brightener just because. Love your channel and BOTH your mannerisms are so relaxing.

Thank you for showing us how you do it. I have the nail file and the pink cuticle eraser. I needed to see you use the pink eraser. I do great on my left hand bc I am right handed. Doing my nails with the left hand is a bit challenging to say the least. I also found out how sharp the point is also. Yikes. I love my files thanks to you. And I learned to do my right hand without as much difficulty. My cuticles are extremely dry and I admit I don't pamper them very much between manicures. I have been using the Dazzle Dry polish. It stays on so well. I'm still debating about the OPI Nature Strong or just stick with what I have. The 'regular'. I have difficult nails. They are peeling, cracking bc I don't use cuticle oil like I should. Weird as it sounds, I use Nail Tek no. 4 for the base coat, 2 OPI color coats and the fast drying top coat Seche Vite. My nails flourish. I've tried so many polishes and combinations it's pathetic. Envy chips and cracks on my nails. What ever works 🧐 sorry, I had a lot to say. Blessings ❤️

Thanks Anna for sharing your knowledge. I am too rough on my cuticles & proximal fold. Old habits die hard. I wore acrylic nails for years and the trauma & damage has been long lasting. Those old manicures gave me bad nail care habits. I’m learning, though! My biggest issue these days is dryness and hang nails. I’m older (61) and oils have become a huge part of my skin/nail care. Consistency is the key and it’s hard to use these products as often is I REALLY need them. ❣️❣️

I just found your channel and am so thankful! I've been tapped in the cycle of cutting what I thought were my cuticles for like 40 years. It all started in my teens when I somehow used this Revlon cuticle cutter stick thing. Then because the skin always grows back thick and ragged, I'd have to cut them again. Thank goodness, I now understand the anatomy of the nail and know what to do! 🙏 I have some cuticle oil, an orange stick and just bought some foot cream with urea in it (which I will also use on my dry and callous prone feet!). My hands have always been so dry and it's hard to find hand creams that work. Anyway, my question is, "what do I do once the skin around my nails starts to grow and I have longer rough bits?" My habit will be to trim the skin but should I do everything mentally possible to not touch it and just add the urea moisturizer and oil until the skin starts to go back to normal? How long do you reckon this process will take? I want lovely looking proximal nail skin like yours!! Thanks
@ChameleonLady
@ChameleonLady 2 года назад
Ditto! I am trying to regrow my sidewall skin to be healthy but there are often dry bits almost dangling off that I figure can't be healthy living skin so I trim just that tiniest bit off, being exceedingly careful to not cut more. Is this the right thing to do @TheSalonLife? It's taken months so far and I am following all of your advice (I think!?) as well as using the StimuNail device. Help appreciated massively! 💜

I'm late to this party but had to share this story with you. Our youngest son was holding a door open for me but it was too heavy and as I passed through, his fingers got caught in the door as it closed on the hinge side. Long story short we ended up in the ER and an orthopedic doctor had to do surgery on his index finger. The nail matrix lifted and was poking through his skin at the base of the nail....like past the cuticle line. It was AWFUL.... poor baby! He was only 3yrs old. The doctor explained that if he didn't reattach that properly, his nail would be misshapen forever and wouldn't grow in like a normal nail. Good content, I subscribed 😊

I was painting my nails a lot, a mix of gel and regular and using acetone to remove. My nails were a MESS. They were splitting vertically and peeling so bad. So I took my nails down and stopped painting them and used a lot if hand cream and cuticle oil. They started getting a lot stronger and I continued keeping them very short. They were so thin and weak but now they're much better. I don't think I'll be using acetone like I was!

Your nails are beautiful and classic. Love it! I had just decided to spend the next year pampering my finger and toe nails. Unfortunately, my nail beds on both hands are damaged from a dog attack that bit into my nails and also broke several fingers. I wanted to camouflage the damage with acrylics but I believe acrylics damaged all my nails. Plus I’ve had intermittent low thyroid issues that make me almost completely lose my pinky nails. I stopped acrylics over 6 months ago. Also dropped a heavy metal box on my big toe which cracked the toenail very far back in the quick and it’s been splintering off. So I’ve got work to do to get my nails revived. I figured as it is winter, easier to sleep with cotton gloves and socks on at night so I’ll treat all my nails to a nice oil, and the kerasal ointment you recommend before bed, slip into the cotton socks and gloves. Don’t know if I can reverse the nail damage from the dog bites and thyroid issues, but I’m going to try. Dermatologists have not been helpful in helping my nails and have said it’s just a part of my life, and here’s my bill. Your channel has been very helpful. Thank you!

I just got a rush of good feeling about you guys when you started talking about “Self Care” vs. self-indulgence, and that by using manicure time to listen to an educational or edifying podcast it’s about something deeper than just self-indulgence. You do simple quick manicures in yourself, your hands are beautiful, and it’s such a balanced approach to beauty! Love it! You and Mr.Salon Life are just awesome! P.S. How can I get Lidl Cien Nail Brightener in Canada? Is it sold online?

Hello, thank you so much for your kind words! You know truly I think when people learn a simple manicure, they are able to do something small for themselves it can actually be quite empowering. It’s kind of learning that it’s important that we learn that our health and well being is our responsibility and we have the ability to do so. Sadly i think that polish was a limited edition and I haven’t seen it anywhere.

I love the shape and the health of your nails. Even though they are kept fairly short, the nails has a lovely oblong shape. I am working on my nail folds gently and using the jojoba oil daily. I filled a small roller ball vial with jojoba oil which travels neatly in my handbag, so I can apply it on the go. I am working on my hard skin on the sides of my nails which keeps getting a ragged edge. The urea cream seems to be helping, albeit slowly.

OMG! I learn something new with every video! I like the idea of shaping nails with the colour still on! My hairdresser will often cut my (very curly) hair dry to get the shape right! And may I say that your videos are my current selfish indulgence. I have a multitude of hobbies which I’ve turned to over the years, needlework and Zentangle to name a few, but they require some concentration and focus. My job has been so overwhelming I really needed something more soothing and relaxing to wind down with. You have encouraged focus on regular nail care and great health tips, and again learning something new with every video is still stimulating. With information overload, I don’t listen to podcasts, but I will often do my manicures while watching, with guilty pleasure, Rupaul’s Drag Race!!

Hello Donna! So true about information overload. It’s just too much for an average person I think but I guess you kind of don’t have a choice when you are a doctor and you have to know so much about everything. I don’t know how you guys do it. Especially GPs. And Veterinarians. Such a broad field. Very often as important as it is to keep the mind active it’s learning how to quiet the mind too.

Oh, Anna, you are sooo right!!! Quiet is just what I need! Thank you for all you do! Hopefully I’ll have an hour or 2 to do the ridge testing and quiet my mind! 🤗🥰♥️

My ADHD kicks in and I pick my "cuticle" now I know it is not the cuticle, but the fold of living skin. I am working on this. That aside, my ridges, vertical, chip at the upper tip of my short, newly filed nails. Cutting them down still finds the corrugated ridge and the nail chips there. Is a ridge filler my last resort? Thanks for your expertise. Love this channel.

I was really bad with my nails in the beginning of now school. I was too excited about trying all the new products on myself. Now I know better. My nails are in the process of healing but they are really thin and soft. What does it mean when they’re soft and why or how did they become that way?

I love your chats.🌺 I have a question my nails are not to bad considering long term biting and chewing. But on the thumbs the corners usually break off and the biggest problem I have is with my right middle nail which breaks long way to the nail bed. What can I do to prevent it or cured?

Hi, I came across your video today and I love how healthy your nails are. I have had overlay put on my nails twice to help protect my natural nails, I keep them you're length. However I find that the overlay doesn't last long when I keep my hands in water...it may last 2 to 3 weeks. Do I always have to keep gloves on my hands when washing dishes?

Just for myself, when I keep my nails polished I’m less likely to pick at my PNF. So in that way it’s helpful to me to keep them polished. I don’t know why it works, just a behavioral quirk I guess

A lot of nail experts advise to file the nail in one direction. Apparently filing back and forth promotes splitting/peeling of the nail?

When I was younger, I used to wear polish for a week and then give them a break for a week. Nowadays I will wear polish for 4-5 days and then take a day off to oil and moisturize the crap out of my nails.
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife 2 года назад
I think that this is the best approach. Wear it for 5-6 days and a day or at least overnight off. I have zero problems with wearing 1-2 coats of clear polish on my nails non stop and I change it weekly but everyone is different. I also think that there is a difference in wearing 1-2 coats of clear polish (perhaps more flexibility and less occlusivity) than pigmented polish. My nails are super healthy now.

Hi, love this video. A friend purchased a bottle of pure tea tree oil that comes in a bottle much like nail polish. I don't have fungus, but she said to make the nails strong and cuticle soft...another person said it pulls the nail from the nail bed and falls off. I'm afraid to use it, so not sure if I should or not.
@TheSalonLife

Hi Mel, Tea Trea is not a good idea. Pure essential oils are very different than carrier, non fragrant oils. Pure Tea Trea is very drying.

@@TheSalonLife thank you, I was confused and I felt you were the right person to ask. Thanks so much. Ill check out your Amazon page and see what you suggest. I was a nail biter and have recently been inspired to take care of my nails better, so I found your YT channel. Very enlightening and inspiring. I just need a good moisterizer for the skin around my nails, I've been cutting them for years because that's what they did at the salon...for years...the skin needs help and I was hoping I could just moisturize before I get into polish etc. Healthy nails is my first priority.
