I ruined my skin recently because I got hooked on the “cuticle”-obsessed influencers. I purchased oils and nippers and scissors and tried to mimic their tutorials. I was in so much pain with raw and torn skin, thinking there was something anatomically weird about my nails. So I did research and saw these diagrams and realized I had been removing and picking with living skin. Thanks for creating this video. There are so many nail influencers without anatomy knowledge spreading misinformation or unintentionally misleading followers because they are vague and aren’t clear with advice. I hope this information becomes more widespread. Thanks again.

I did the same thing and stumbled across her videos and she has educated me so much and I love how detailed she is. I can't believe I've been cutting my living skin all these years and been in pain but now that ive leared the difference from salon life im now healing. Keep the videos coming. I've been doing my own manicures at home and saving lots of money.

@@TheSalonLife The difference between my proximal nail fold and my cuticle! I've struggled with picking and biting around my nails since childhood and a few years ago took to bringing a nail kit with me everywhere to nip and "neaten" my cuticles instead of ripping them apart and turns out that's all I was doing anyway! When you showed the diagrams and did your little example I realized that what i was nipping was just creating a vicious cycle of an ugly, dry proximal fold that would drive me to nip and bother it even more creating more, essentially, scar tissue. Even when I would leave my nails alone for a while and my nail folds would look good, so many videos made it seem necessary to clip that bit of skin, calling it the 'cuticle', in order to get a clean looking manicure. So now, I'll just give them some rehab time and use my shea butter.

Thanks to your videos I no longer cut my living skin! I have not had any long stretchy thick dry skin or hangnails since. It took about 10 weeks but with patience I am now enjoying beautiful “cuticles” people think I go to the salon to get perfect manicures but all I do is keep them oiled and push back the skin weekly. There’s hardly even anything to scrape off anymore. SO GRATEFUL! And… saving lots of time and money on nail treatment gimmicks😅

Before the era of influencers i learned most of my beauty info from magazines and while they were responsible enough to say “cutting your cuticles is bad” they never explained why and they never explained the difference between cuticles and proximal nail folds. So yeah it is life changing she moment you realize the difference!

Hi Dana! I agree but at the same time clients expect extreme "before and afters" and perfection without doing any home care. So that's why I think my videos are showing the consumers what's realistically achievable in 1 service and how important the daily care is.

Very impressive video. I’m a manicurist of 30 years in California and it’s very rare I hear other manicurists that understand basic nail structure. Here in California even 30 years ago we learned nail anatomy. The one thing I would highly recommend with this person is to come in and get a weekly manicure until I see she is on the right track. This has always been my logic with this type of damage, people need support. So this is obviously some habits she has formed and need to gradually stop and that takes time. So when a client comes in they feel a sense of obligation to perform well. They want to get better with undoing these habits. I think with her keeping it super simple with the Kerasal lotion & CND treatment and that’s it. Why because of the open skin and inflamed eponychium. See how that helps after a week and go from there. We truly are like the therapist (trying to help understand the behavior to help correct or improve it), and the manicurist. Also, not expecting miracles but slow and steady progress in the right direction. This could look like 4 steps forward and 2 steps back, but you’re still ahead 2 steps. You should totally do an update on this client…I so wish I could help her. 💕 Great job on this video ‼️

I enjoy a manicure, but I’ve never had one where they didn’t trim the nail fold. In fact the last one I had, they got quite carried away and I left with my nail fold bleeding. It was pretty painful. Plus, they NEVER get the nail shape right. NEVER. All I want is something natural that follows the shape of my nail bed. But I’ve only been happy a couple times. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Anyway, this video was super informative. I can take what I’ve learned and do it myself.

Wow! This is so helpful! I didn’t realize there was a difference between the cuticle and the skin around the nail. The skin near my cuticles is hard, so I pick at it which causes it to stay hard to protect itself. A never ending situation. This makes so much sense. Thank you very much!

Definitely something I’ve been working on for several years. I find when I go through really anxious/stressful times that unconscious picking habit comes back and my thumbs look like this and worse. Diligent manicures, a quick clean with blue cross rather than going crazy with cutters, and lots of moisturizing oils/lotions within reach when I find myself picking have helped. Car, desk, coffee table, night stand. For hangnails I carefully trim and use liquid bandage to help it from catching or tearing further and keeping it clean.

Everything you have said about living skin makes perfect sense. A long time ago before having my first pedicure I never had issues with callouses. I noticed after I had a pedicure that I started forming callouses. So naturally I thought I have to remove those callouses with a foot file. It is a never ending cycle. But I’m going to try your advice with my fingernails because I’m guilty of cutting the living skin but I’m also going to try regular maintenance with the soles of my feet too and see what happens.

🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Thank you so much for this information! I had no idea about the different between the proximal nail fold and the cuticle. Now it makes perfect sense why I’ve struggled so much with the skin around my nails being ragged and unhealthy. No matter what I did, the skin (what I thought was cuticle) just grew back harder and thicker. And in my quest to get rid of what I thought was the cuticle, I’ve probably been damaging the unexposed growing nail which then would explain why my nails grow out to be thin and easily broken.

I so appreciate your commitment to the science of this! I’ve been getting into self-nail care for about a year but until I found your channel I was still confused about how to properly and safely care for my “cuticle.” The Olive and June method is the closest to what you’ve taught me - they suggest just push back your cuticle and moisturize and buff the lower nail but the skin around my nails just wasn’t looking great and I needed to know the what and the why. Because I didn’t have regular nail care before, I did have that stretching of the proximal nail fold onto the nails a bit and I would just infrequently push it back and end up with a lot of raggedy pieces around the nail. After watching your videos it all finally clicked! I now regularly push back the proximal nail fold, all the time! And moisturize with oil and/or lotion every single time I get my hands wet as Anna suggests then once a week I remove the ACTUAL tiny bit of cuticle from the nail with an orange stick or scraper. And finally my nails look so pretty, healthy and amazing. Now I’m trying a dimethyl urea based strengthener (Olive and June) to try to grow them a little longer. Thank you Anna! Side note, I use the same Shaka fluide LRP sunscreen as you I order it from Europe to US because it’s the best sunscreen in the world. That and Riemann P20 Suncare for Kids.

Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to have “good nails” for awhile, but I’ve always had bad “cuticles,” which I now know is the wrong term, as well as hangnails, torn skin, and nails that are weak and tear like paper. Earlier this year, I had 2 sets of acrylics done. The first set was removed by the nail tech literally sliding a sharp tool under the acrylic and popping them off, which shredded my nails. The second set was removed with soaking and e-filing, and then she asked if I wanted her to buff them and I said yes. 🤦‍♀️ Disaster. I’ve been wearing glue-on and stick-on nails ever since, but the skin around my nails has been getting worse and worse, so today I decided to look for videos about how to have healthy cuticles and here you are! Instant subscriber, and I’ve learned so much already!! My Amazon cart is overflowing with new products. 😬 Do you know anything about the Rescue Rxx being unavailable? There’s none in the link you gave or on Amazon. I’m hoping to try it soon! Thank you for this wonderful content!!

I have learned so much watching you! I had a gel polish removed while on vacation, and feel she ruined my nails. I was searching for a cuticles only mani to have this week, since my nails are clipped to the nub, so don’t need any trimming or filing, but the cuticles are so jagged, I thought they needed to be trimmed to keep them treated with oil, which I am doing MANY times a day. I will continue instead, with your tips, and hope for success, and will stop using the nail hardener. Thank you so much!

I am so late to the party here but omg thank you so much for this video. Its genuinely informative and anatomically correct. I have been cutting off the dry skin around my nails for years wondering why nothing ever improved. Because I was making things worse!!! Made a pact with my self right now to ONLY moisturise that skin, no cutting, no exfoliating, no picking. Thank you so so much.

Thank you for a great video! In my opinion the thing with one layer of nail polish being better than two or more is due to the fact that one layer is much more elastic. The more you put on, the stiffer it gets so it works like a hardener.

Much needed video and advise, having a lot of similar issues with skin around the nails, even though adopted oil and urea hand cream routine advised by you, and had seen great improvement. Also gently pushing back proximal nail fold daily. But it is awesome to get video dedicated to this topic! Enjoying the series, learning so much , even from the situations different to mine. Thank you so much😊💕

Fascinating!!! Thank you so much for these informative videos! I’m just going to come clean here…. I am a picker. There I said it! Mostly from nervous energy and anxiousness. I’ve always assumed I’ve just ruined my hands/nails but you’ve given me hope that they can be improved. I’ve gotten so much better at trying to take care of my hands and nails and sometimes I still catch myself wanting to pick, but I am trying to be religious about using oil on my nails right before bed and just generally take care of my nails. You have helped me so much! I really enjoy your videos. ☺️

Another great session, Professor Anna! 🏫 I’m so glad I took your advice to heart (and hands 😏) back in 2020 because my nails are now in a much better state than they have ever been!! These refresher courses help steel my resolve to keep doing better, particularly when I’m tempted by those pesky nippers! 😜
@TheSalonLife

You know, nippers are sometimes necessary. If you have a snag it’s better to cut it than pull the skin and do some major damage. But that’s about it :)

Thank you for sharing this information. I wore sculptured nails for years and it severely damaged my nails. Manicurists where I live always cut what I thought was the cuticle (Now I know it is the skin fold). I’ve tried doing my own nails, but never knew what I was doing wrong. I feel so much more equipped to take care of my nails myself. Thank you for your generosity in sharing this!!!!!!! It is such a shame that so many nail salons ignore or don’t care about the damage they are doing.

Great video! I love Doug Schoon, but I think you explained things better. I used to be a chronic nail biter, but now I'm bad to take that energy out on my PNF - constantly scratching on it, tugging at the dry skin there, etc. = so moisturizing is my friend.

I'm so glad I found your channel! I've been cutting the skin on the sides of my nails (because it is thicker and dry) for years now! I will not do that anymore! I also watched your video on bendy, peeling nails and I bought CND Rescue RXx, Castor oil (which I heard is good for nails and for lashes) and some little empty polish bottles for quick application of different oils, Mavala nail hardener and Kerasal, and I took before pictures and hopefully, will have great results to report soon! Thank you so much for taking the time to make such thorough videos! They are super informative and I am very excited to try all your tips to get better nails! ❤️
