Fixing Dry Air Problems in Shed w/ Aprilaire 300

This video details how and why I installed a new Aprilaire Model 300 whole house humidification system in my shed that I use for year round basketball training. I added functionality by using an accessory compatible Ecobee Smart Premium WiFi thermostat and I added additional humidification rate potential by piping hot water to the Aprilaire Model 300. No more boiling water and wetting down the floor to keep from getting a scratchy throat in January. Here are the links to the main products I use in the video.

Do you have the return tied into the main system or does it have its own return?

The recommendation on a traditional system would be to suck from the main return air duct and then dump it right back into the same return duct a few feet down stream but in my case, I'm pushing heated supply air through the humidifier, using hot water over the panel, and dumping the humidified air into the large gym space with it's own dedicated diffuser. The system humidifies very well. I have no issues with dry air anymore. You could also pull from the supply trunk and dump in the supply air as well so you had warmer air going over the panel. Good luck!

@@danimalshousewould have did it that way but my moms house has a downfed air handler that feeds the supply trunkline under the house( double wide) So i would have to drill through the flloor to tie into the supply trunkline. The air handler has no return duct. The air filter just slides in on topside (return) of the air handler (heat pump). So the mechanical room is technically is a return plenum. So i mounted the aprilaire 300 in the mechanical room above the air handler so i did not even connect the return side of the aprilaire 300 .. i just left it open because the room is the return. I ran the supply of the aprilaire 300 out the other side the mechanical room into a seperate room( with flex duct & i must say it is very quiet) and all the doors in the house have passthrough grills in the doors and its about a inch gap from floor to bottoms of the doors...so id assume the air will pass through the house fairly well. I tied the aprilaire 300 into the hot water side of the water tank and im going to tie the drain of the humidifer into the condesate line of the air handler with a T fitring.( did'nt have one on hand ) Rigjt now i just put it down the water heater drainpan line which does run to the outside of the house (temporarily) to test the humidifier ( until i go pick up a T fitting). unfortunately but not really...lol the humidity is @ 52 so i guess i will just wait a few days until the tempature drops into the 30's so i can see how well she works.( was only 25% humidity in the house when it was 20 degrees last week) Im thinking it should do fine. I will be tie into the ecobee just as you did soon as i have to get her a new ecobee as hers is the ecobee 3 light which does'nt have aux. Controls. So right now i have temporarily mounted the humidistat in the mechanical room (return). I was gonna do a install video but i kinda forgot until i after already started the work :(

I've been using AprilAire's previous model 350-APR Self Contained Humidifier in my finished basement for 7 years. I was in desperate need of humidity with the radiant heat in the floor. It does a fabulous job, but I can no longer tolerate the noise it produces. I can't operate it when we're using the basement. IT'S SO LOUD. I can even it hear on both the main floor and second floors, but it's tolerable. I would consider replacing the old one with the new model 300-APR you showed. Do you find the new one is quiet?

I would say it's plenty loud actually. Most normal fans that are in the 4"-8" size make a decent amount of noise because of the small propellers. They have to spin pretty fast to get the design airflow so they end up being loud. Now, if yours is loud because it is worn out a new one would likely be a bit less noisy but otherwise I'd say it's just the nature of the product design. If you call or chat with Aprilaire they may be able to reference a Db rating that would be a measurement of noise level. Good luck!

Im am in the process of installing the 300 myself. I plan on using flex duct as installation instructions say it makes it somewhat more quiet. Once i get this done i will let you know how it sounds....im hoping fairly quiet. I am installing it in the mechanical room just as Daniel has done.

I also insulated the short 5 foot long, 8” diameter duct, from the unit to the living space to try and quiet it.
