Fixing faults : Basic teaching skills for ADI Part 3 & Standards Check
The PDI is learning how to fix driving faults with his trainer using the Identify, Analyse and Remedy method. This method was know as the Core Competencies in the old style Part 3 test. It does however form the basis for fixing common driver faults.
You still have to identify the fault with your learner.
You then need to analyse (explore) the problem to help the pupil fully understand the consequences or risks involved.
The remedial action is the plan you agree with your pupil to help them take / share responsibility for learning.
Howard Floyd is the founder of How-2-Drive and is an Approved Driving Instructor ADI helping people to pass the driving test and is an ORDIT Trainer helping people become fully qualified instructors.

Great video, glad I found this! My part 3 is looming and it's good to hear another instructor explaining the same things but with a different take on it, really useful, and glad I'm not the only PDI who struggles sometimes!

A good driver should see you approaching the slower moving vehicle and anticipate that you may move out so move out themselves if it a three or more lane road.
@Grahamvfr

And that same good driver, would check his mirror before he signalled to moved over.

Hi Howard just a quick question , currently training as an PDI and coming ti the end of my part 3. I understand this video is training and he is was at same place I am now with this phase… I notice he is just stating the issues and not using Fish or scaling … my trainer has said I should use that rather than tell the pupil even if they have no knowledge or know the answer i have been told the questions will help them find the answer but would it be ok to just flat out say you noticed an issue like its happening in this video or would it be better to say FISH it what would be best for part 3 exam? X

What is the best book for part 3 prep. Which books are helpful to use for guidance to learn Instructor skills and techniques. If not going to any School what books are best to buy? Thanks

Hi Howard, I’d like to say thank you for your wonderful way of explaining subjects. I have been watching some of your videos and I really benefit from them with my studying, one thing I would like to ask if that’s possible, if you would have a chance to produce a video to explain how to do the lesson plan templates, that will be really appreciated . Thank you

The ADI are not suppose to give the learner all the information by saiyng " you haven't check you mirrors, you cause a danger to the road users etc. " There's no client centred learning here. You as a PDI/ADI suppose to ask open question to make learner come to conclusions. Which mirrors you need to check? Why is it important to check the mirrors? How would you check your mirrors? I am suprised nobody here in comments picked up on it, including you Howard.

I have my 2nd attempt at part 3 next week. If my pupil stalls once in the first 5 mins, should I pull them over and change the lesson plan about stalling?. He's a competent driver but last test he turned to putty because the examiner was there. Should I let it slide just for one stall or should I pull over and work stalling?
@How-2-drive
@How-2-drive 2 года назад
Best this is to talk to your pupil about it. Is it a one off? How are they feeling? We can all stall the car especially when nervous. Listen and respond to the needs of your pupil. I’d ask if they are ok? What did they need to do differently. (Was is the clutch, no gas, or handbrake came off late, nerves?) Ask if they are ok doing this next time? Reassure them, build confidence. If it keeps happening then maybe a change of plan just to address the issue. I can’t answer for your pupil. Good luck, be yourself and work WITH your pupil
