I'm a hobby syrup maker. Only 51 trees and do my boiling in 3 steam pans above a wood fire. I do reverse osmosis to get the sap between 9 to 11 brix before going into the pans. Even starting at 10 brix, it is a long boil for me. It is amazing to me how fast the the syrup comes out of your evaporator! On the positive side.... I get more time to drink beer while watching the fire. Really enjoy watching your videos. I'd watch them all even if you weren't so beautiful.

What an incredible setup!! I don't think I would classify it as a "shanty" though...I think fortress would be more suitable

Great to see you all working in the new sugar shack! That is some cool and expensive looking equipment. When you were changing the saddle on the blue line, I noticed you were wearing on sort of sports watch. So, on the days when you spent all day on the woods, how many steps/miles did you walk? This is definitely a labor of love.

40 years ago I worked for a construction company contracted to line 3500’ of a water diversion channel with 3-4’ of concrete. I tied reenforcing wire six days a week for ten months. I’ll bet I must have used several hundred thousand 6” and 8” wire ties like that. It was the highest paying job in the area at the time. Spent every dime I earned on cars, trucks, hot stereo and beer. Lots of beer! Nothing to show for it but had a good time…! Cheers! Whipple

Back in the day, they called them sap camps. At least in Maine, that is what they called them when I was growing up. And typically, they were just out in the woods. What you guys have there is the Taj Mahal of sugar houses! We had some nice sugar maples around my house when I was growing up. Used to help Dad tap the trees and boil sap. And we did it, one bucket at a time. Hahaha Great memories though.

Have to tell you I'm 77 and grew up in Michigan and helped my dad. We collected with a tractor and trailer with a barrel on it, hauled it to the sugar shack and drained it into the bigger barrel there and dad had a large pan he boiled it down in. As it got down to the end he would take it off into 10 gallon milk cans, take it to the house and mom would finish it on the kitchen stove and can it. What a difference and a beautiful setup you run. Oh I forgot, dad used a hand drill to tap and then we hung pails on the trees.

What an AWESOME "Shanty". I've been a "back yard burner" for nearly 35 years. Got a taste for it back in the 1960's helping my older cousin dumping buckets and cooking over a wood fired flat pan in the old Sugar Shack, off Chaddock Rd. in Bethany. I would have never guessed that years later I would have my own Sap Shack not to far from there. I've been watching as I am working out of town this year and am missing the sugaring season, the first in a long time. Thanks for all the videos!
