I have a friend that used to have an indoor painting business and she always said that the most important part of the job was the caulking, and that it did take practice to apply it properly. She called it “putting the eyeliner on” because it made such a difference in the finished look of the job. Well done Simon, you put the eyeliner on beautifully!😬
Seeing the island being "Osmo'd", I kept hearing Michael's voice from a recent vlog saying that the brush should follow the wood grain in long, even strokes.
Fixing Mistakes? Looks to me to be addressing the finishing touches. Don't be so hard on yourself, the job so far is truly stunning. Visiting the convent someday when you open it up to visitors is on my bucket list.
Four experts doing their own thing today. That includes Alex, the history recording videographer. Billy, the appearance of the old cook stove has inproved 100% under your steady hand.Simon, the Caulking King (among various other construction Arts). And Yannis who can do about anything he sets his mind to.
Tell Alex his editing and the music he puts with each segment is just so coordinated. Very soothing and enjoyable to listen to. So many U-tube channels have yucky music that doesn’t match what they are filming. Billy I really 😮 your channel and each improvement you make to the convention.
It’s interesting how each person paints differently. I know Michael prefers the round brush for cutting in, Simon obviously likes the one you bought today. Me, I prefer the angle brush for cutting in. It’s all about what works for you.
I enjoy the fact that Blly is ambidextrous while painting. I use either hand as well, and Billy is the 1st on RU-vid that I've seen. Great job to all of them. Yannis's attention to detail is a credit to his teachers.
Love Yannis. Such a hard worker. I remember when Billy first bought the convent nd his first job clearing the courtyard. mo was there with a number of his mates, we didnt know Yannis by name then but he stood out amongst all of them doing twice as much as anyone else. Good work ethic. Hope he does well in life.
Yannis definitely is a hard worker, that's for sure. It had been great watching him working with Simon or Billy or Mick and learning the various skills each of them brings to the renovation. You can tell just by watching him that he is listening and learning and really trying so hard to master each new technique or job he is shown. By the time they are done, he is going to possess an amazing and diverse set of skills.
Billy you are so cute when you love something. You did a good job with the old stove and it’s perfect for a decoration in the fireplace. Simon, you’re always so clear with your explanations and demonstrations. It was nice watching Yannis do a job that wasn’t heavy lifting, demolishing or climbing to the top of trees. But Alex, I must say how you can make construction jobs look spiritual, and romantic and simply beautiful. You are a genius videographer and editor. Love your work. xx
About the organ: A friend of mine used to go to a boarding school in Switzerland and played the pipe organ in town. He said there was a small mirror on the organ so he could see what the priest was doing and know when to play the organ. Maybe that's what the small circle is on your organ.
Love how Simon teaches us. Never thought I would find something like this interesting. I always wonder if Yanis has a family. Adding Simon snd Yanis to the team is the best thing Billy has done. My mother would say "Let's get crackin'!" ❤
Yes- Simon has a knack for explaining the ‘how to’ aspect of a project. I think there are many of us out here in WatchingLand who know how to do most all of this but there are thousands who don’t. It would be interesting to learn more about Yannis but he certainly doesn’t have to reveal to us anything
@@AliWade1971Yep! I’m ambidextrous and was the first female maintenance tech at my semiconductor fab. It came in handy working in small spaces being able to use either hand. I even have “left handed days” where I use my left hand exclusively. It comes and goes.
I know it's too late for this advice, but I've cut a lot of tile, and I always put on a trash bag (holes cut for my arms and head) to keep myself dry. Maybe you didn't want that "trash bag" look for the video. We look forward to watching your videos each evening. My husband just says "Put on Billy". The first You tube we subscribed to was "Doing it Ourselves."
You really do need to reconsider where you're placing the refrigerator. For efficiency"s sake when you're cooking, the last thing you need is to be trekking that distance between the range, sink and fridge, plus having to navigate around that gorgeous but huge and imposing island. The fridge really should go where you're closing up the cabinet (even if not recessed).
Billy please put the refrigerator in the little cabinet nook instead of plastering over it. That would free up wall space where the fridge is currently sitting, and it would hide the unattractive parts of the fridge (the sides) and look so good flush inside that nook:)
@@reladie Billy has asked for and received tons of suggestions and ideas for his project from people all over the world. I’m sure he can respond for himself if he wants.
Trappist beer is a type of beer still made today. There is an official association for real trappist breweries. There is only one French brewery, but it's not officially in the association. The bottles are collectable.
Just a suggestion. Build a pot rack on the back wall above the antique range cooker. then some of the beautiful copper pieces can be displayed. Love your show, watch the magic happen. You are a kind loving human! You cheer Ryan on. He certainly needs help to "CRACK ON''! In my83rd year....a quilter in Grants Pass,Oregon
He truly would be a good teacher. With some eloquence he brings complicated topics down to earth, easily understood by the inexperienced, addressing topics in a thorough, methodical and logical manner. He has well-timed pauses and speaks slowly; perfect for YT presentations.
I totally agree! He explains everything so thoroughly yet simply enough for the listener to be able to understand and even picture exactly what he's explaining!
You are all so brave to paint without a drop cloth down! It would be the death of me to even attempt it! 😦 Billy, the cooker looks beautiful! Brilliant decision to purchase it for the convent!! You and your wife are an incredible team and a perfect match!! Every day the anticipation for the next video is palatable and you never disappoint!! ! Crack on!!
My great-grandfather was a professional painter. My dad gave me his original drop cloth. When he did so he assured me that all the drips and spills were his and that he had received it in nearly pristine condition.
I have a thought for your antique cook stove. It would make a great warming table, a place to set food to be kept warm while making other dishes. Install a row of heating lamps above it and you can even set the little sterno burner cans for warming food right on the surface. Another thought is you will need power outlets on the island. As you cannot run power through the floor make a place for an EcoFlow inside the cabinets that plugs into the wiring going to all the outlets on the island. Cheers mate.
Well done team. Simon is an absolute wonder. He needs to be a professional mentor/teacher at a tech school for the building industry. Billy, as usual, wants nothing less than the best for this project and Yannis, also as usual, applies himself to the task at hand with dedication.
Another sugestion for good use of the fireplace: Put a iron bar in it along the whole length above the cooker with hooks to hang all the pots and pans. Looks nice, makes good use of the space and has all the cooking tools readily available right in the center...
Suggestion…apply a shatterproof glass to go on top of the cooker after you rework it. (Add spacers between the glass and cooker) This will allow you to use the surface to display whatever. This room is so beautiful, the whole 360° of it.
I find, the trick is to cut a very fine tip, and have a cup of soapy water at hand. Run the bead of caulking down the gap, then, with your baby finger, dip in the soapy water and gently drag your finger down to the bottom.
The kitchen is a dream. Nice work. Hint: one of the best and economical ways to clean copper is to make a paste of flour, vinegar and a bit of salt. Mix it to the consistency of toothpaste. Apply with a dry soft cloth and rinse with moderately warm water. Dry immediately to remove water so it won't spot.
I have multiple copper utensils in my kitchen which need buffing frequently. The quickest and easiest method for brass and copper is applying ketchup, allowing to set 20 minutes the rinse and dry. Works amazingly fast. Not terribly expensive and not labor intensive.
The finishing touches make so much difference, even though they are time consuming they are definitely worthwhile doing properly. That antique range looks wonderful, as does the osmacote on the wooden island. Simon's work is always neat and the pride is evident in all three of you regarding your work. Plus of course Alex and his camera work. The garden looks even bigger from ground level now its cleared a bit more, it will become alive again in springtime. Well done everyone 💕🇦🇺
You're very fortunate to have Simon and Yanis. Love the music. Beautiful features in the kitchen - island, stove, chandelier, stone, beams, windows, paint color. You're gonna need another fridge.
Such an awesome team including Alex who we might not see but are aware of his exceptional work. What is not to love about this channel? Thank you Billy and company.
considering its in a fireplace i would definitely make that wood stove functional, great in case of emergency and would be great to do pizza and bread.
The old stove is beautiful, what a statement it makes to old timey cooking methods and it fits perfectly in the fireplace...same kind of brushes I use in my projects Simon and same bucket as well...everything looks perfect, bet you thought this day would never come...!
Cut in brush and glasses 😂 Simon well done. Billy the stove is a great decoration for the fireplace!! Fantastic work Yannis on the Osmo. So excited to see the kitchen finished. Billy this room has been a long haul but is a showcase for your vision ❤
I find these videos very relaxing. I look forward to each and every one…. Even I learn something new each time I watch. Thank you for sharing Billy and Co! ❤
I was watching this video with my 4 yo granddaughter and she put a toy cup on her stuffed dog and said it was his construction hat because you guys are doing construction.
Oh Simon, the caulking ! I thought I was going to be great at this artform, turns out I’m a butcher. The convent kitchen progressing in professional category, we’re all here for it.
Well done Billy the cooker looks really good now. Also well done to Simon and Yanis for their contribution to the jobs that needed to be done. The garden looks so much bigger now it has been cleared. Loved watching. Crack On 😘
The old range cooker looks absolutely amazing, Billy! Well done! I was pleasantly surprised at how much your dad was able to clear up in the garden! I always appreciate how well Simon is able to explain the purpose of the products he is using. Very helpful!
I love the serenity as each of the three men are involved in their individual tasks. Alex showing us close-ups of their hands repeating moves with grace and precision. Gentleman Simon explaining his tips and techniques is always welcome and informative. Such small graceful motions make such a big difference to the appearance when you step back and view the whole. I was actually surprised that Billy didn’t already have a proper brush for cutting in, but Simon is happy now. Alex does the most smooth edits, and marrying of music to image…these a profession grade instructional videos, a pure joy to watch. Watching these men work is like watching a master flowing through the movements of tai chi.🖤🇨🇦
Can’t believe how many wives of this video there has been already in ten mins, Billy is obviously getting things right to keep us all entertained. I have binged watched this whole series in the last month so am very eager each evening now for the new video
With the background music, Alex filmimg, all 4 of you quiet made for a very relaxing video. Thanks. ( I do like noise and banter as well ) 😊 have a good evening. X
Billy - that noise 😕. Hope you all had ear plugs. Never seen Yanis so slow and quiet. Great to see the garden. People collect old bottles - may be worth getting them cleaned up. The old range is looking fabulous. A good job well done.
Why did your Dad take the truck to England instead of a regular car?? I'll bet those fumes from all the chemicals would make you sick. Stay safe You Dad did a really good job with the garden so far and the stove looks a lot better. Thanks for sharing, Billy. 😀
It is so good to see you all busy in that gorgeous kitchen, adding the finishing touches before the rest of the kitchen gets put in. How exciting!!!! You all work so well together. The three musketeers 😊
Billy, with all the wonderful work you do, I can't understand why the entry at the gate hasn't gotten at least a temporary fix to the deep dip in the drive. Every time I see a vehicle pass the dip, I cringe thinking of the shocks and alignment of your vehicles. I love following your channel. No disrespect ment.
The hardest job is made easier with the correct tools. You would not make a pot of stew in a flower pot. Just like you cannot paint without the right brush.
Simon, this one is for you. May be I missed it in Billy’s previous videos. You are, for sure so knowledgeable….where did u learn the tricks of your trade, was it from a real young age guided by family or did u go to any apprentice school. You take so much pride in doing what you do and explain yourself so well. It’s such a pleasure watching and hearing you. Yannis is sure lucky to be under your wings. Yll are a good team. Sending 🙏♥️🤗 to u all from CA, USA
Billy, you should get someone who knows plants and historical gardens to come and have a root around. I'm sure the nuns would have had medicinal gardens with herbs and other plants that look like wild plants. I dont know if anything would still be growing, but you never know? Please have someone come and cut the bramble and ivy (by the fruit trees) right away because nesting season starts earlier than you may think, and it shouldn't be cut in spring. I think Simon is right that if the trees are cleaned off and trimmed back, they may come back great. You never know, you may have some very old heritage varieties! BUT please consult someone about what time of year to cut the fruit trees, apple and pear are different than plum and cherry trees. Start watching for bulb type flowers to come up soon, my Snowdrops are coming up in one part of the garden! Hooray, spring is coming!
Just a little tip for Yannis always do the recessed areas first then the flats going with the grain of the wood. But the whole kitchens is looking amazing great jobs gentlemen
For the top of the old range where the cracked piece is you could use a product called J B weld . And I assume it’s cast iron . You could clean the broken edges with a wire wheel and set the piece with magnets and wedge it in place . Let it sit 24 hr and it will be permanent . Sand the excess poxy and poof like new . Don’t use JB kwik only the 24 hr one 👍
Thanks Simon for the explanation about "caulking" as we call it here in the U.S. The cooker looks fantastic Billy and is in a wonderful location. All that copper is a blessing in the kitchen. The "osmosing" continues to make the huge island look absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for the garden tour. That space has so much potential and as a gardener I am salivating with ideas though a PLAN is always a good thing. One step as a time...slow can be a blessing. Meaning...bad weather outside makes the work inside a pleasure.
Very nice. For the skirting/baseboards, they do make clear caulking, so you don't have to have a white line there or necessarily worry about painting over.
