Fixing my LG TV... by putting it in the oven

My LG TV (LG 60PK590) stopped working yesterday. While it seemed to recognise HDMI cables were connected, it was refusing to 'connect' and display an image. All the HDMI inputs were suffering in this way, even with different input sources. The VGA and SCART inputs seemed to be unaffected.
I found this website zedic.com/lg-42... which suggested baking the mainboard in the oven at 200°C (392°F) for 10 minutes. So I followed the instructions... and it worked!
I decided to record the process to give others some confidence in doing the same to resolve the same or similar process.
You do this at your own risk, and cannot be held responsible for any damage or harm caused by following the same process. If in any doubt, hire a qualified engineer to help repair your TV.

WORKS !! - SEPTEMBER 2018 procedure. Followed the process line-by-line and now my 55" LG "LW" series 3D HDTV is reborn !! The smell from the baking lingered for a day but it is a small price to pay for fixing a $1400 TV for FREE !! Thanks for posting

Baked a board from an older 42" LG. Went with 300 degrees for 15 minutes. It worked! And the smell wasn't that bad. Many thanks!

I have a 2011 42” LG 42LE5500, symptoms were horizontal lines across the display and not picking up input from any source. I came across your video after searching for 2 days on finding a replacement main board or a place that repairs logic boards. The part for my TV is obsolete and had no luck. So either way I was at the end of my options. Tried this fix and IT WORKED! Removed the board, popped it in the oven for 10min at 190 degrees Celsius, allowed it to cool down and reinstalled into the tv. Thanks for the fix!

Hi, first of all I want to thank you. My 60" LG Plasma had the same symptoms. My board was different and it was not available for me to remove in that fashion without having to buy new parts. Of course buying the new parts would have been risky on something I was not sure would work. So what I did instead was to get a small cube heater and position it directly behind each of the 2 boards on high heat for 20 minutes. Well when I was done I did not reattach the backing of the TV I just tested to see if I could get the LG logo back up on my screen. Well much to my delight, there it was. I am now watching a little golf and I owe you for giving me the idea. I did not video it as it was a lot of work lugging that old plasma up and down for me. I hope this helps someone else. Thanks again and again and again for sharing, I would have never tried what I tried without you. Have a Happy Easter. Michael

It's January 2020. And I'm excited --- your video just helped me to bring back to life my 10 year old Sharp Aquos LC-55le620ut. I mostly used your method with minor modifications: - preheating the oven to just 350F (177C) - wrapping my TV mainboard in tinfoil all around and putting it in a tinfoil tray - I placed it inside at about 150C while still preheating - after reaching 177C - I kept it in the oven for 7 minutes Voila! That was sufficient to resolder whatever bad connection. It didn't even smell. All glitches are gone, my Aquos is Made Great Again!
@JonathanJenkyn
@JonathanJenkyn 4 года назад
I would be worried that the tinfoil would cause reflux away from the board. That said, congrats! HNY!

I did this last night. do it at 392 F (200 C) for 10 minutes. let it cool for 30 minutes with the oven off and oven door open. then move it to the kitchen counter and let it cool some more for 30 minutes. *now to prevent any smells first make a pouch out of parchment paper, place the board in the pouch, and staple the open ends closed. then make a pouch out of aluminum foil, place the board in the parchment paper into the aluminum pouch, and fold the open ends of the aluminum several times to make it air tight. do not open the pouches in the house after the board has baked and cooled.* I went to my garage to get the board out of the pouches. there were exactly no fumes or smells while I did any of this because of the aluminum pouch being sealed by the folds and opening the pouches in my garage. once installed, the board has been working ever since.

I have a 60" LG 60PM6700 Plasma TV, 12 years old, with 4 faulty HDMI inputs. I baked the main board at 390F for 15 minutes, voila!, works. Did make a stink that lingered in spite of opening a window and running the stove's exhaust fan and some of the plastic around the RCA connectors slightly melted.

To prevent it happening again, never ake out the power cord while not in use, let it be in standby mode always! I found out that the board stops working when it has been left in a cold (below 10' Celsius) room for a week or so without the power cord attached. So, never unplug the power cord (tv, blu-ray surround etc). I`m baking my board for 2 time now. Lesson learnd. EDIT: Last time it lasted for 3 years, and it also worked today!

It seems this TV is weak at the HDMI connections. I have done this 4 times, pulled the board today for a 5th. It seems to blow up when I try to use a Firestick or Chromecast on the HDMI port for very long. I was able to get a longer duty cycle this time by putting my Firestick on HDMI 1 instead of 3 but alas here I am again.
@Jonsey39
@Jonsey39 5 лет назад
Wow, you might be right. I seem to have had the problem after switching back and forth on the HDMI's to my Android box. Good share for others to read. READ WHAT KEVIN JUST SAID, IT COULD BE IMPORTANT. Me I am going to use the Android box on my Panasonic upstairs, it never seems to have issues.
@FryQuest
@FryQuest 5 лет назад
Interesting, when my TV stopped working I was watching something on Chromecast and fell asleep, the next morning it was still on, then went to the bathroom and there it was, the "no signal" message, I got cc about two months ago and my TV never behaved like that before, now this weird thing happens every now and then when I switch inputs the audio is gone unless I have to go back and forth inputs to fix it.

Help needed!!! I have a similar situation with my LG monitor I'm able to see a black blank screen, when I connect my laptop through HDMI and I'm able to hear the audio but no video. Any idea this method will work with monitors? and I have a microwave oven. Is it any different from the oven you have? Should I give it a try?
@JonathanJenkyn
@JonathanJenkyn 4 года назад
Microwave will NOT work. You'd get a wonderful fireworks display if you used a microwave with this process. If you can use an oven (fan or convection) then i would say give it a go. What have you got to lose?
@thanish1991
@thanish1991 4 года назад
@@JonathanJenkyn Haha I don't want any fireworks for sure. Do you think Hair dryer would be a good option? If so how long should I blow the motherboard? First of all I think all the oven methods I see in internet is for tv, can I safely assume it's the same process for monitors as well?
@JonathanJenkyn
@JonathanJenkyn 4 года назад
@@thanish1991 hairdryer won't get to a stable temperature and won't be hot enough either. You really do need an oven. Should work for many electronics where the solder has dried up.

Melts and re solders the connection with the heat from oven
@JonathanJenkyn
@JonathanJenkyn 4 года назад
It reflows dry solder joints. This usually happens because of low to no Pb solder that's used in modern electronics. One might say they're being eco friendly, but when you're throwing away tonnes of tvs, I'm not sure its that green.

There are people that have done this 3 and 4 times though. A little work, but still cheaper. I will never buy an LG again though. This is a problem right across their line ups and they should have a forced recall as it is a defect, that seems a little to convenient to forcing people to buy new TV's. Planned obsolescence comes to my mind.
