ahaha sorry guys, I guess I never actually explained WHY our cats have a cage for people who haven't watched those vids before! Our cats love watching the birds, our neighbors, whatever going on outside. It's WAY too dangerous to let them go out by themselves though because 1) There is no safe spot for anyone at all to play here--there are only streets and parking lots, and 2) There are a TON of stray cats that we can sometimes hear fighting. Just nope nope nope, our cats aren't going outside unless they're in a cage. They usually ask to go in the cage by pawing or meowing at the door, and then they meow again to come back inside (usually between 20 min to 2 hours later). Sometimes if they're being super butt heads we'll just put them out there so we can get a little work done. :p But anyway, they love it. We're not just locking our cats away or anything lol
I understand the idea behind the cage. If I ever get the chance to have a cat (which would involve moving house) I would look into enclosure options as well. Maybe Australian suburbia is not as close-packed as Tokyo apartments, but there are issues of cats predating on native wildlife, plus safety of not letting them get onto roads.
Didn’t know other countries did this. Not much of a thing in Britain. Our cats go out during the day and we usually have cat flaps or windows left open for them. When we live in flats we just leave the doors propped open so the cats can go out. Everyone does it though so everyone is aware of why the doors are propped open in flats. Although I can’t say the same for sky rise flats. I’ve only lived in 3 storey flats before.
Rachel: "I can't place this, I'm not tall enough!" Jun, a tall person, instead of offering to do it: "You're still smart enough to do it." Bless you guys haha
I believe Rachel was in the military for a while (correct me if I’m wrong) so that would explain her handiness. I really love how she takes everything on and gets creative because I don’t have those life skills lol
@@seafarer_ if I don't remember some nonsense, Rachel said in one video that everyone in her family is pretty handy so she is used to stuff like that. Sorry for my bad english, I'm still learning
@@seafarer_ She actually mentioned that her family likes doing a lot of manual work at home, so that's why she likes doing stuff like this :) In some of their vlogs when they visited her family, her and Jun also help around her family's house!
In america the mentality is "people get paid to clean that up, you don't want to take away their job do you?" The reality is "Of course people get paid to clean it up! Why do you want to make their job harder for them?" Haha. If you can clean as much as you can then the janitors have an easier time. lol
Although most people have basic power tools anyway. And for those who don't I know a lot of places that will do free tool rental where you put in a deposit and when you bring the tool back you get the whole deposit back
In England, they have a sort of workshop but instead of the shoppers doing it themselves, there's someone who works there that does it for you as long as you provide like what you actually want to do.
Poki got so round!!! 😱 it is either because he is Siamese (mine is chubby as well) or because he is a rescue. Rescue cats tend to eat a lot because they don’t know when they will get food again.
I can see why Poki isn't as common in the Jun's kitchen videos. He is too excited hahaha. The white DIY units definitely look stronger than what was already in place though good work!
I love how once Rachel started talking about the shelves being slippery, Jun looked closer and was like "oh shit they've been in shrink wrap the whole time..." then he checked and was like "oh phew they're slippery anyway"
Isagail C'mon now, Poki was caught getting into their trash bin several times already, he's the greediest cat amongst the three of them, both for affection and food lol
My stepmother had a cat just like that. First showed up as a tiny starving kitten, so they called her Little Bit. After a while when she grew into her full adult size plus a couple extra pounds of snuggle padding, they realized they made a mistake with her name. In other words: a boo-boo. So her name was quickly changed to Boo-Boo as a cat that size should never have to answer to Little Bit.
I have had many cages over the years, all needing something because the community of rescues here was incredible. We would usually get the animals from a vet or the utility company pole workers would have the list of animals and who they would go to. So, in time I had repaired many cages and I always recommend you use Dishwasher Rack paint. It is like coating the wires with rubber. This doesn't need replaced or covered up. I hope this helps someone. Blessings.
I am evidently impressed how effective everything is in Japan! 24/7 open small shops to also heat your food at! DiY section at a workshop supermarket! What else? Yeah.. I wish the rest of the world would think of this
Was just thinking that if you wanted to cover the wire to avoid rusting, you could always cover it with a glob of hot glue. At least it would be clear and it would protect the wires. 😊
according to my calculations, you need 5 wires to make sure all 3 of them can jump onto a platform at the same time from 1 meter height. physics! let's you know if your cats are safe in less than 5 minutes of calculations calculations: the wire can hold 21 kg gravity on earth makes things accelerate at 9.81 m/s/s a cat's stopping distance will be around 20 cm (8 inches) = 0.2 meters the heaviest cat you got is 6 kg the falling distance is probably less than 1 meter (3 feet) wire strength: F=m*g=21*9.81=206.01 N max. acceptable deceleration: F=m*a => a=F/m=206.01/6=34.335 m/s/s max. acceptable speed of a cat coming down: a=s/t/t => v=s/sqrt(s/a)=0.2/sqrt(0.2/34.335)=2.62 m/s speed of the cat coming down: potential energy = kinetic energy => m*g*h=m*v*v/2 => v=sqrt(g*h/2)=sqrt(9.81*1/2)=4.43 m/s 4.43/2.62=1.69 wires needed --> 3 cats means 3 times the stress --> 5 wires needed if all of them jump onto the same board at the same time
*can you help me math please?* But no, honestly, this is incredible. I bet you spent a lot of time on this comment, and it’s so impressive! You should have more likes and more reply’s!!
Japan is a Rabies Free country so if Rachel and Jun wanted to take them to the US it would be soooo much work (and money) to bring them back to Japan. It's very unlikely that the cats will ever go to the US.
I'm currently a 2 hour train ride away from my cat, so I've been using Haku, Nagi, and Poki as emotional replacements for the time being. I love them so damn much you guys have no idea
Love your videos! Just a thought on construction - apply the carpet before you put the shelves up. Instead of using wire to secure the shelves, you could use zip ties (or cable ties). I had the same cage for my prairie dogs years ago, and had to replace the shelves as they were chewed through. I found the zip ties to be a much quicker, sturdier, and safer solution. You cage looks a little wobbly, so you may want to turn some of the shelves on alternating levels. ie: the lowest shelf runs east-west, but the next one up runs north-south, etc. If it kinda looks like a spiral staircase - you're on the right track. It will give your cage more stability, and keep the kitties safe. Also, have you thought about putting a hammock in for the cats to enjoy?
Hi ,kylenparis, do they hold as much weight? I just happen to have the same cage. The shelves kept falling down, so I took them all out but one, and secured that one. Only one of my kittys goes in she took over and claimed it. However, when I take the cage outside I would like to put the other trays in. Thanks:)
@@sewhappy2879 black zips can hold up to 120lbs or 66 kilos per tie. Standard zipties will be marked with the tensile strength on the bag, so you're safe.
Awesome video! I love your DIY projects. I watched the Poki rescue video yesterday. It's so wonderful to see the progression from injured kitty to chubby little boy. He's got such wonderful parents. Hope his diet goes well and you two have a fantastic day!
I just realised, Jun has basically his old haircut back, hair back in the face. Have to admit, I like it more. lol Good luck with Poki's diet. How do you keep him away from Haku's and Nagi's food?
see, I tried that, when I still had 2 cats. One was supoosed to gain weight, the other should lose it. Problem with the one, who was supposed to gain weight, he preferred to eat in intervalls, always just a bit. I sadly had to let him go a months ago. Only positive thing, the diet of the other one goes well now. Still would prefer having a fat cat and my old cat, but sadly, it wasn't meant to be.
zip ties would have been better than wire and been much faster but the wire is good too. Love you guys and your kitties. I get so excited when I see a new vlog from you guys. Thanks for sharing.
+carra coleman I think we might switch to that when we add a couple more! I don't know why but it didn't cross either of our minds lol. The wire wasn't expensive so no big loss. Zip ties definitely would save us a lot of time!
I thought that the video title was “Fixing our broken cat” and saw Poki on the thumbnail I died laughing when I realized it was “Fixong our broken CAT CAGE” XD Edit: just saw that someone else also wrote about this, at least I know that I’m not alone XD
Cant see where you are installing it outside or the inner material of the steps, but you might want to consider water getting through the drill holes! Especially if its just chipboard on the inside, which is likely. Setting each zip tie/wire in place with a bead of some cheap epoxy would help to stop water ingress.
CC I tried, together they are just crazy. Normally it’s not breaking things but more or less shoving stuff off the counter when I’m not there. When I’m there they are finez
Have been enjoying your videos since before Rachel moved to Japan, have so much respect and love for you guys and your fur babies!! Great work on their cage!!!
Jun is like the nicest person I’ve ever seen. I’ve never met anyone REMOTELY as nice and calm as him! 💙 I’ve never met him personally but from the videos alone, extremely nice and supportive!
