Raise the water pan 3 notches from the bottom! This is the real solve. It gives space around the temp prob. This intern allows the pellet smoker to control the Auger speed more accurately. This also increased temp stability. I was having erh code hourly and on every smoke. Once I moved the water pan up. Problem solved.

I got the Erh code today, it was perfectly cleaned after the last cook, it had plenty of water. Thanks to your video, I fully opened the chimney and was back to cooking. Thanks again!

Doing my 3rd cook with my new Laredo and 4 hours into a brisket cook I got an ERL code. I pulled everything out and vacuumed everything out. Replaced it all and cranked it back up and now it’s coming up to temp. Auger was not stuck I don’t think cause it started feeding pellets soon as I turned it back on. Hope this was just a one time glitch. I was using PB mesquite pellets from the top of a just opened bag so I don’t think I had any junky pellets or pellet dust. Preshate your channel, it’s helping me a lot. You solved my stuck ash tray problem. Thanx Sarge!! I also totally cleaned everything before I started cooking

Thank you! We had the ErL error. We used our vacuum and cleaned the hopper. It was jammed up. After that we be SMOKIN'!! Love your apron!

Hello, we got everything ready for a full smoker run (6 baby back ribs and 2 7 lb chickens), got the smoker started and when we went to preheat we got the ERL error. I watched your video, and remove all the pellets and vacuumed the remainder out of the auger, added a cup if pellets back in and the grill started up. Thanks.

I’ve got the same smoker since October. It hasn’t worked right yet. Finally yesterday I tried one more time. I turned it on full blast. After it quit about 30 mins I turned it down to 225. I ran it two hours and the temp stayed 225. So far so good

Using my Louisiana vertical pellet grill(very similar to pit boss) for the first time today. It would shut off after 300°f. I unplugged it, plugged it back in. Temperature read 410!!! I set the temperature to 250. While dropping down to 250 it shut off again! I watched this video. Unscrewed the top almost all the way, banged on the back door, and plugged it back in. Holding 300 strong now. Will raise the water tray for the next time. Mine is an inch away from the probe right now.

So once you get ERL and you have a jammed auger, how do you clear the jam? You can empty the hopper somewhat through the back door, but how do you get to the actual auger has you can't fit a shopvac hose into the hopper?

My 4 series just threw that code 3 times. Each time I could hear the auger struggling to turn and that’s when the code ERL code came up. Fixed now.

I got the ErL a couple months ago, googled it and it wasn't hard to fix. But the unit shutting down is actually pretty smart. The hardest part was getting 40 pounds of pellets out of my smoker.. that said, I had just loaded a new bag I had shipped to me. I won't do that again. It was full of dust and that caused the unit to shut down. My Series 5 is pretty frugal on pellets so I will keep less in the hopper. Best cleaning for the glass and inner door, by far, an tiny SOS pad. That little steel wool cuts through everything, won't scratch the glass and no vinegar is necessary.

For a perfect clean I use a razor scraper like you clean paint of windows. Just like new.

I had an ERL code so I researched and saw it was the auger. I took the whole thing apart, took the auger out, didn’t appear to be jammed, and ran paper towels through the auger compartment. Next time I used it, it came on again. Getting frustrated!

Hi, ERR and ER1 is always the temperature probe. Cleaning with water and vinegar will sometimes help clean off the gunk, if it doesn't resolve it, please call us at 1-877-303-3134.

Worked fine the first couple months but now the ERH is constantly happening. It has been thoroughly cleaned out, the water pan raised as well as the damper turned fully up . The temperature climbs way over and then the dreaded code ERh shuts it off. Any suggestions?

Had the ERH error code on my pitboss Very disappointed as it cut out 4 times while cooking a roast and has done it every time i used it ( 3 times) and was almost out of warranty Little did i know that it can be fixed by unscrewing the top a few turns. Pit boss even had me unscrew mine pretty much all the way till the caps were just barely holding on and mine still errors almost at the 2hr mark into a smoke every single time.

Ok almost a year ago I bought my pitbull's pellet smoker and it worked great I cooked on it like 4/5 times from thanksgiving to Jan 2021 then I decided I was going to clean it didn't know I was supposed to vac out all the pellets left in the auger tube so when I started to rinse it off I clogged the auger and I just got it back working and I saw just now that I had an error code h on it went directly to your RU-vid channel and saw what it was now I'm just trying to keep it going

@@GrillSergeant it is I'm cooking ribs on it right now at first I was getting a error code h and saw your video on what causes it and remember that I had shut the top vent off while working on the auger so I let it cool down opened the top vent and now running 350 degree, I know I should be slow cooking the rib's but I got a very late start on them

Instead of "sifting" my pellets I use a kitty litter scoop(new and clean) to scoop the pellets into the hopper

My smoker drops pellets and comes up to temp but once at temp it won't feed pellets to maintain temp. Replaced the temp probe. I get the ERL Code

as soon as i turn on my pit boss it automatically says 240 on smoke then gets higher from there even the dome gauage says 120 to 150 . its not hot then errors out that its hot.. by the digital reading yes. actual reading no. i have changed out the temp sensor but it did not help

Hey Grill Sergeant, I have been plagued with the ErL code many times. Auger is working just fine, and the pellets are flowing to the fire pot. What I have found is that when is says ErL,1) it seems to also point to a too low of a temperature read out. I was suspecting that a mix of poor vacuuming and smoking at a very low temperature while it is very cold out caused the flame to go out and the machine timed out and threw an ErL code....2) I have also received an ErL code and the flame went out by having the vent up top too closed. Thoughts?

I’m having the same issue, I tried manually starting but after 2 hours it started dropping and just pushing more and more pellets in until it gives an error.

I’m having this issue now. I unplugged and restarted my 700 series. I have a temp sensor/probe on order because that’s what I found on the internet. I’ll comment back if it’s fixed later.

I got the ERL code, and the hole inside was full of pellets. There was also a lot of smoke like the pit was trying to start... but no heat. Not sure what to do here.

Had the ERL code (Lexington). Pit boss wouldn't even power on afterwards. Checked wires, looked good. Had moved it to a work bench to take the access panel that had a different outlet nearby. I plugged it in to try it, powered right up. So all I did was use a different outlet and not use the temperature probe.

Got the ERL code, but it doesn’t come on until 300 degrees. Cleaned all the pellets out and vacuumed it, started it again and same thing, ran great til it hit 300 degrees, then it throws ERL code and shuts off???

I had the same problem they sent me a new temperature probe out I installed it it worked fine for about three Cooks. What I have noticed is take a piece of steel wool and clean the temperature probe which is located inside your smoker at the bottom it looks like a one and a half inch nipple sticking up from the bottom of your smoker

I've had my Copperhead pellet smoker almost 2 yrs,Pitboss has sent me 2 wiring harnesses and on my 2nd Temperature Control.,and I have never had over 225 degrees. How do I replace the temperature Control module ??

I have 2 series 7 vertical smokers and both times I’ve used them I get the erl code immediately when changing the setting from smoke to any other temperature. To clear I unplug them, then plug them back in and turn on and select the temperature I want and they both work fine after that. I’ve read that the problem is the smoker hasn’t reached a high enough temperature fast enough. I thought I may be leaving the door open too long on startup. Any thoughts?

NoP Error code: Dude, the NoP error code is when the meat probe is not being used. Once you plug it in and set it up into your meat, the code should clear on the screen and start registering the internal meat temperature. If the probe is being used and you still get the NoP code, THEN inspect the meat probe for damage and insure the plug is fully seated. Check the probe plug receiver to ensure there's no dirt in it. If everything checks out OK then start looking at connections and possible control panel issues. If you leave the pellet smoker outside and dirty and do not clean it, then you will most likely start getting internal parts deterioration (rust, dirt build up, etc). The ErL code for jammed auger, I like the suggestion you have for sifting the pellets first. Suggestion: don't fill the hopper with the pellets. Just add a bit more in periodically so when you finish your cook, go ahead and burn off the remaining bit of pellets to empty the hopper and auger. That will clean it and help you get it ready for the nest cook. Just check the hopper periodically and add a few cups in it at a time. You want to keep the pellets in good shape and dry. Leaving the pellets in the hopper until the next cook, you then will encounter those pellets degraded into hardened dirt. Then you can have all the fun of disassembling the auger to clean it out.

Great video I just wish I would have seen it about 20 hours ago. I bought this Grill at Lowes brought it home and started to do the burn out after watching your burnout video it got really hot an error and shut itself off I unplugged it and let it sit a while about an hour and set the temperature to 200 not 350 just to see what would happen. 3 minutes later I had way too much smoke pouring out of it and a massive fire underneath I unplugged it let it cool call customer service set on hold for an hour then took it back to Lowe's where they are building a new one for me. Customer service called me back and told me I should have vacuumed out the fire pit before relighting it. She also said I should run turn on smoke for about 10 minutes before I turn the flame up that I have not seen anybody say in their videos including yours do you agree with that? I really like the idea of this smoker I've had a few in the past but this is my first really good one and so I watch your videos and try to do it exactly the same way and had this issue hopefully it will not happen again I'll be right really watching it when I get my next one in a few days. If you could let me know what you think about running it for 10 minutes on smoke before turning it on whatever temperature you want to set it on I would appreciate that thanks so much keep up the great work I am a subscriber

Sammy Smirh Hey thanks for stopping by. Yes to leaving it on the smoke setting for 10 mins or so before cranking it up. If I want to cook something at 400 what I’ll do is turn the smoker on, fill the water pan and leave the door open till I start seeing smoke. Then I’ll let the smoker run on the smoke setting for 10 mins. After 10 I’ll turn it to 250. Once it hits 250 (4-5 mins) I’ll bring it up to 400. Now the trick is when you are done cooking is not to turn it off but let it run at a lower temp like 200 for 10 mins before turning your smoker off. What I found it if I turn it off at 400, when the unit shuts off, some of the pellets are still lit in the auger tube. What freaks me out is if the flame works it’s way up the auger tube it has a small chance of going to the hopper. So as a precaution, I’ll run it at 200 for 10 mins then turn it off. After it’s done with it’s shut off cycle. Sometimes I’ll remove the firebox cover and get a water spray bottle and just lightly spray it once to extinguish any remaining pellets that are still warm. Just make sure you are wearing heat gloves when getting to the fire box. Hope that helps and check out a playlist I made with all my Pit Boss cooks in it. Glad to have you aboard the channel! 🍻

got a question I recently purchased the PB Brunswick smoker and after doing the first 2 steps watching your burnoff video. the problem I seem to be having is that listening for pellets to drop into the firebox. all I hear is the fan spinning with holding down the prime button for 3 minutes. I did notice that looking in a small hole in the hole motor assembly. it looks like the ignitor is lighting but the temp does not go up at all. I have tried this couple of times now to no avail.

If the auger unit got bent during shipping that can be the only other reason for a jam but 99% of the time it’s the quality of the pellets you are putting in your hopper.

Thanks for the video i tried everything on this video but it did not work i also called pit boss no response back and i left them an email no respond back the sad part is that i only used it a couple of time and it just give me the same problem i wouldn't recommend this smoker i would buy something else

I've had my unit for about a year with mixed results. I started having the Erh code back in November and Pitboss sent me a new controller. After I cleaned the heat sensor in the back it seemed to be ok so I never installed the new controller. Did a big cook last week and the unit kept Erh out. Very frustrating. I did a massive clean of the unit (which I have done before as well) - still the same. I switched out the controller - the same. Found your video about the vent top - I opened this up and cleaned it (it was gross) and finally had some hope that the frustration would go away......it didn't. I still get the Erh. Any further thoughts?

Andrew Stronks when you opened up the vent top to run the smoker again was the grill still hot from an error code given or did you start the smoker up cold? I know from others if they get and ErH code and don’t let the smoker completely cool down before opening the event and turning it back on is it will still maintain a lot of the heat that made it error out and will possibly give you the error code again. For every cook as a habit now I just open up the top vent the whole way from the start.

@@GrillSergeant Started from cold. Just went through the process again. I waited 10 minutes having it on smoke (all good). Put in a pan of water, shut the door and turned up to 250 for about half hour....all good. Turned up to 300 for 10 minutes.....all good. Turned to 350....all good. Turned to 400....erh within 5 minutes

@@GrillSergeant So last night I did a beef tenderloin for about 3 hrs at 250 degrees. Zero problems. To finish with a burn off I turned to 350. Erh out again. This is with the new controller btw. Currently i'm using Traeger pellets. Zero reply from PitBoss on my ticket to them as well.

When you remove the pellets from the smoker for storage or if you want to change wood. How do you get at the pellets in the auger tube or below the trap door, so you can completely empty it?

I've gotten ERL code a few times now. Last time I ran it completely out of pellets on purpose because I felt like the auger was jamming. Other than using the shopvac on the fire pot, is there anything else you would recommend before adding more pellets for another cook? Thanks for the help!

I tried to use the pit boss for the first time yesterday. I did the pre burn ok but after about 5 hours I kept getting the erh code. I had water in the pan and the top was all the way up. It would start to smoke allot and then you could hear the fire just take off and flames were coming or if the fire box shield and it would over heat. The auger was still dumping pellets into the fire box. Do you know how to fix this?

Tip for cleaning smoker/grill: learned from my wife's grandpa as he was sizing me up to approve of our marriage, put a bread pan of water into the grill while it is heating up, allow the steam to build them take your wire brush to the grid. Cleanest taste in history!

Nop so far means their no thermometer 🤷. Not sure what is stands for. But when I put the thermometer plugged underneath the control panel it then shows the temperature

Brand new smoker, looks like yours, not certain of the model but it is a $400 “3” series. Erh, erh, erh. Nothing in smoker, Just trying to get it functioning with pellets. What’s up?

Doug Lykins When you get an ErH code what temp is your smoker at and are you letting it completely cool down before turning her back on? Is your vent closed all the ways down or open all the way up?

Hey, when I put my tailgater on smoke mode to start my grill. After about 5 mins the temp starts flashing. Wondering if you know why? I vacuum my pot out everytime before start it up.

Hey T-Roy If your hopper is clean and you can hear your fan, it sounds like you may have an issue with your controller. I would give Pit Boss a call.

I think the problem with the overheating issues is the water pan design. I think it doesn’t allow air to circulate up and out. Will try smaller water pan

I have had a temperature runaway, set temp to 350 and ends up at 400 or higher. Now I know to raise up the smokestack cover
