Interesting comment. Now that I recall,shined shoes were an invitation for some clown to step on them and laugh.Any time we got new ones we dulled them ourselves before going out in public.Sadly that didn't end when people were adults.I've seen guys in their fifties doing it.Best I can figure is that kids from poor families sometimes equate shiny shoes with "bein' uppity"and attempts to "get ahead" need to be crushed.It's a "guys you know from the old days" sorta thing.Even today I don't "shine" boots though I use products to preserve them.

I’ve spent hours in my garage polishing all of my shoes. And I haven’t needed to wear dress shoes in 2 years since I retired! But there is something addicting to watching someone at all hours of the night polishing his shoes. I hope this is not MY new normal!😂

You and me both. My daughter thought I was obsessed polishing my shoes when I retired..........but still bought me two horsehair brushes and a couple of welt brushes for my Xmas. Not obsessed but I did work overseas so all shoes lay for 3 months sometimes 6 months so it made sense to go thru the lot and give them the full treatment.

My father used to be a driver for this rich family/company. When he started there, there used to be a lot of drivers for all the bosses of the company and he learned to take care of his shoes while waiting during meetings etc. He said one of his first times going to the headquarters he was amazed how every driver had shoes that looked like new. Suddenly they all started buffing them up and he understood why.

You would be better off using something like a 1200 or 1500 grit sandpaper if you are doing this for the first time, instead of the 300 used in the video. Doing this will allow you more control over how much material you take away with each pass of the abrasive paper.
@TheSighphiguy
@TheSighphiguy 3 года назад
and take 4-5 times as long. 300 is actually pretty fine. higher grits may be TOO fine and wind up closing the pores of the leather.

A good tip when your not 100% sure or fully confident doing something is to take your time and do things little by little. Constantly check your work. Unless your working with something you can easily remove then less at a time is always better.

Perfect. If you aren't looking for where that scratch was, it's unnoticeable. Also, I like the idea of a lubricant when sanding off a scratch. Makes a lot of sense to nourish the area you are sanding. I've learned a lot of new things by watching this channel. I've only used Renovator (in the blue cap container) on my shoes, but I see the Creme Universelle can do the job, too. Is there a time or reason to use the more expensive Saphir conditioner, rather than the more economical ones? They serve essentially the same purpose, right?

@JayWalkerOnline
@JayWalkerOnline 3 года назад
Creme Universaille is meant to be an all-around conditioner. The difference between MDO and BDC Renovateurs is mostly how well they shine, as they both sufficiently nourish leather.
@gijsbo2000
@gijsbo2000 2 года назад
Try to avoid using products containing mink oil as a lubricant when sanding. One can of course use such products, such as Spahir's Renovateur, for general conditioning of the whole shoe, but using it locally as a lubricant to help with the sanding is unwise: the mink oil can darken the leather quite considerably, hence using it locally will leave a dark spot there. As these dark spots will disappear only after a long time, better use a balm or lotion that is not containing mink oil as lubricant.
