Fixing slipping transmission on Sears Craftsman Riding Mower -read description. Easy 30 min job

The Craftsman riding mowers with have a problem with their transmission slipping and losing speed when they get hot. They eventually stop moving at all after 20 minutes of mowing. This happens because the fluid gets old and gets moisture inside of it, and then the moisture aerates the fluid into foam and you lose hydraulic pressure.
Since the factory does not give you a drain and fill for the fluid, you must drill a 1/2"hole in the place is located to drain and then refill the transmission. My local lawnmower shop told me to do this procedure and they recommended using 10W-40 motor oil. (I mistakenly said 3/8"inch hole but it's actually half inch hole you must drill)
It may be a bit challenging to rig up a funnel with the tube taped to it to inject motor oil into the transmission.
I did this repair two years ago, and it's been excellent ever since then. My mower is faster than it has ever been, and it never overheated the transmission and never slows down after a long day of mowing.
To seal the hole put a piece of rubber hose into the hole and then a bolt forces the whole thing to be tight

Update. The correct number is: Dorman 090-179cd And it’s with a 1/2” hole drilled. i’m going on five years after this repair and the transmission kicks ass. I use a 100 pound outrigger when I mow as well. It pulls it with no problem

Keep it clean Ae: blanket of grass =holds more heat in. Most factory fills are mobil 1 full syn.20w-50. Check the fan blade on the trans pulley Ae: missing or broken blades less cooling as well as the belt for being worn= slipage when warm/hot. and a idler arm for pulley/s for full swing. Ae: =clutch. A former outdoor power equip tech of 15+ years. And yes i still have all of my fingers....

dam1041960 my YT3000 is having the heat/slipping/aeration issue. It calls for 20w50 as well, there is NO FAN on the pulley, I first tried installing a 12v fan blowing on that box and it delays it for about ten mins. I check the oil after it slips again and it’s the cream light brown color instead of oil. I’ve done three fluid removals (manual pump out) and it’s the same issue still. Any recommendations on that before I drill and drain the way he did? I actually have a fill port on mine at the top of the hydro-trans...

FYI, this is NOT a Craftsman ONLY issue. It is with an issue with ALL riding mowers that use the Tough Torque K46 transaxle.

Tough Torque "engineers" need a boot up their a$$es for making it "sealed". Only 200 hours on my transaxle and already sludged up. Two gallons of new oil to flush it out and a state where the oil stays clean. These transmissions go through hell and obviously require servicing every season.

I used this video to determine what my problem was and it was correct. I was pretty hesitant about drilling holes and discovered a fill plug on top of the transmission. I had to buy a suction gun and sucked out all of the contaminated oil and then replaced it with 5W 50. Problem solved.

Why did you say your fluid was mixing with air and water??
@MrSFSTUDIOS
@MrSFSTUDIOS 2 года назад
Or you could just drop the axle, dig out the factory fill plug, flip it over and let all the nasty oil out, buy a new fill plug, fill it up with 20/50 Hydrostatic oil, put the factory plug in and bolt it back into the mower. Really easy to do. Comes out with six 1/2" bolts. Gotta pull two cotter pins for the brake and speed levers. Oh yeah and a spring clip on the fan. You need a special two-prong spring clip pliers to remove that. Overall an easy job and requires no drilling. You can clean the interior magnet too, as it is located at the factory fill plug. But to each his own.
@wayneleroy6382
@wayneleroy6382 2 года назад
Not difficult but drilling a couple of holes is much easier. I'm sure he thought the same thing. He didn't feel like dropping the transmission out.
@MrSFSTUDIOS
@MrSFSTUDIOS 2 года назад
@@wayneleroy6382 It may be easier, but runs the risk of creating a leak where none existed and may also introduce metal-shavings into the transaxle which would destroy it quickly. The case is aluminum, thus the ferrous magnets will not catch the curly-q's created by a drill.

seems to me a good bath would be in order before doing that. Plus, you can use NPT tap and hex head plugs to keep it simple for fill and drain instead of worrying about the rubber hose idea. Cause it looks to me like the rubber hose is letting some of the fluid leak out.

Does it make a grinding noise when you put it in forward only and the more you push it, the louder it gets? Then you shift between reverse and drive so many times and it Will finally take off and work just fine? Literally JUST BOUGHT MINE, Used it ONE TIME and that’s what mine’s doing

Martin Osvath you’re amazing for doing this. My YT3000 has a fill port that’s accessible from the left side on the very top of that transmission. It’s about 1/2” opening. I tried sucking out the oil with a manual pump but have had the water/aeration issue for three oil changes in less than a year. I’m going to have to try the bottom drain you made. I hope the Dorman plug holds up to the heat, has the rubber on it been okay with the heat?

Wonder how you drain the trans on a Craftsman yt3000?
@preston121068
@preston121068 7 лет назад
Having the same problem with my Craftsman LT3000. After 20-25 mins trans starts to slip until it doesn't have enough power to make a simple turn. I did not do the drain mod, but did remove the trans, drained it completely of some really nasty looking oil. Was going to flush it with kerosene, but decided against it and refilled with 20w-50 synthetic oil. It now goes 35 - 40 mins before slipping starts. While it improved, it's not fixed. I may do the drain plug mod this weekend and do the kerosene flush because as nasty as the old oil looked, like 6 month old chocolate milk sitting on the counter with clumps and chucks in it, I assume there is more that did not drain out. I'm just unsure if the kerosene is going to do any more damage to it... and if I do the kerosene, should I actually run it for several minutes to break all the gunk loose?
@martinosvath5285
@martinosvath5285 7 лет назад
preston121068 Tough to say about the kerosene, the transmission is a big hydraulic pump, and I wonder if the kerosene is outside of the chemical range that those seals are designed to withstand. My fluid wasn't even that dirty when I flushed it, I guess it had enough water in it to aerate. It's been 2 summers now and it's never slowed or slipped yet
@preston121068
@preston121068 7 лет назад
Yeah, that's why I was on the fence about the kerosene. Perhaps I'll just do 2-3 more drain and fills with cheap motor oil doing a grass cut after each and finally fill with a better quality oil. Maybe that will work loose any remaining clumps left in the case which I believe is causing the problem. Also the oil I drained had water, thats why it was all dark milky looking I think, it was also much thinner than the 20w-50 I put in. The trans from all I've read came with 20w-50 in it. Think Ill do the drain and fill once or twice more. If the problem continues, maybe Ill put some Lucas oil stabilizer in it? It's supposed to help with cooling... might be a good test for it lol
@gavincurtis
@gavincurtis 4 года назад
Need to keep flushing your transmission. Took me 2 gallons before oil stayed clean and works perfect. Must replace the fluid every season as it gets dirty very quickly.
@preston121068

@@gavincurtis It died after 2 flushes. Would hardly move at all if any. I scrapped it and bought an electric riding mower. One of my better decisions I feel so far.

I know its been a LONG time since you posted this, but diesel fuel works as a cleaner pretty good also. Less harsh to pieces than gasoline and cleaning agents like carb and choke cleaner. It is BLATANTLY obvious that MTD (original manufacturer) intended for these to have a short life span and high repair incident rate. Which plainly meant more money for them due to sales of replacement parts. Even the brand new Craftsman zero turn my Mom just bough has a non-serviceable transmission.

So you’ve checked with the transmission belt tension and condition? I’m a very old unit like that contaminated transaxle fluid can definitely be causing you to lose hydraulic pressure and forward speed. Does it have a dipstick or a drain and fill?

Does anyone know (or has anyone tried) if this should work on a John Deere D Series transmission? I have a 2014 model D105 that has the Forward/Neutral/Reverse control. The mower will not climb any grade after 15-20 minutes of usage. I suspect the fluid is so old it has this same issue.

Jeremy Moore this style of mower is different than yours. My battery is in the front by the engine, and there is no drainplug on the transmission. I don't have access through the top like on your mower You either have to pull the axle out or create your own drain and fill
@MrSFSTUDIOS

Not on this model, a molded gas tank is under the seat. The battery is upfront under the dashboard behind the engine. But he could have dropped the unit and turned it over to let the old fluid drain,
