I completely overhaul the braking system by replacing the discs, pads, hoses and fluid. I sort out the unloved alloy wheels and solve the mystery of why a tyre keeps going flat….
The thing about projects like this is the confidence you get. When I bout my 530i, I used to take to BMW for all sorts of things including lights. But I started tinkering... I found most things aren't hard to do yourself. Thanks.
They aren't you've just to get started and work it out along the way, I mainly worked on motorbikes but on my E60 so far I've replaced exhaust manifold, brakes all round and just fitted a new ac compressor and condensor
I own one of these and pretty much everything you’re tackling I could do with sorting on mine. This series couldn’t have come at a better tome. The wheels look fantastic.
It's crazy My E61 is also the same colour and I've had almost exatly the same issues too even down to that damn rear wiper part snapping when trying to fix it. So useful having these videos not only to help fix the issues, but also peace of mind that I'm not the only one. 🤣
I am honestly in love with this channel, everything's described pretty clearly and at the end of episodes you just wanna watch more of them. Keep up the good work
Really enjoy these videos of maintenance on your cars! The video quality is really nice, and the bits of information you include throughout the video is a nice touch! Plus really like how the BMW is looking now!
What a great video.. I love the way you work on your car to make it better... You really know how to make a car looks and feels great.. Well done.. I enjoined your video in the rainy cold night we have here.. Thank you..looking forward to the next one. 👍🏻👌🏻
Your videos really are very good. In my old e61 I went through more run flats with ‘eggs’ in the sidewall from hitting potholes here in the UK and nails in treads than actually wearing the tyres out. Do you carry a spare, or foam instead of the run flats? Other jobs I found fun were: changing the light bulbs which was a whole light unit out job; panoramic roof drains and rear door drain holes unblocking; pano roof seal replacement; diversity antenna replacement; high level brake light replacement.... all easy things you could do in future videos.
i had an issue wheel the rear tyres on my e60 and new tyres sorted it, these are such lovely motorway cruisers, and the e61 is just an awesome family motor
Keep going bro i very like your videos !!!!!!!!!! i own E60 530i 2008 and this videos gives me ideas for my car Thank you for all information and Subscribed!!!
Great informative video, a nice change from the torrent of 18 year old kids with pop and bang maps. Would have been a good opportunity to maybe freshen up the calipers with a touch of paint but love the knowledgeable guides none the less 👌
Nice work. Your efforts to keep this car serviceable are well thought out and saves a lot of money. I would have applied anti-seize to wheel hub before mounting up the rotors to avoid future corrosion, especially in the harsh environment you drive in.
Thanks Vic. The video is intended to be a vlog not a full "how to" so some steps are skipped for time. I do have a full brakes guide on the channel and i can assure you i do use copper grease on the hub!
this video is fantastic honestly. I'm looking at swapping out my ol' faithful 2001 e46 320i and getting a 525 or 530d e61. These m57 engines are absolutely bullet proof, and I'd have an e39 but apparently the M57 peak torque destroys the auto zf 5hp boxes, so an e61 with a zf 6hp is a must for this reason
I am getting them wheels for my black 318i F30 , along with the black front grill, i wonder if you can get dark grey replacement badges for the rear? Prob will do the brakes at some point too but i think green pads. Possibly a better intake system too. If only i had a driveway so i did not have to get cold and wet on the tarmac!
Good call on not buying refurbished. I got a refurbished wheel for my 335i a while back, wasn’t disclosed it had a repaired crack, less than 1500 km later it started leaking air and basically needed to be replaced again. At that point can’t prove anything. Never again
Done correctly the weld SHOULD be stronger than the original metal, but it depends how good your welder and his kit is. If the weld penetrates all the way to the outer surface your going to have to grind it back and restore the wheel anyway so i agree welding it is not a good choice on such a wheel.
Nice video I liked watching it but I have one difference of oppinion according to the disc brakes. I used to buy other brands discs for my BMW's but I found that the original BMW discs are far less vulnerable of being crooked than other brands.
Regarding the different front to rear tyre sizes. I believe this is called Staggered set up. My 320d M Sport also has this. Which makes buying matching front and rear non run flats (17”) wheels tricky!!
Man those front calipers are much larger than the ones on my E39 525i. I went all out on tyres recently and fitted Pilot Sport 4s all around. 235 45 17 and 255 40 17. Rears were double price of fronts, lol.
Hello, I am having a difficult time trying to track down my fuel mixture preparation error according to Carly. Please help as I feel like I am fixing or replacing wrong parts. I already changed the O2 sensors,MAF sensor and spark plugs as well as air filter
Great job again. Was the shuddering under braking or just high speed? I'm getting it under braking and I suspect the discs have warped. The more I watch your videos the more I want to have a go myself at repairs.
Thanks Nareem. Shuddering was only when cruising above 60 mph. You are correct, shuddering under braking is likely the discs and/or pads. Go on have a go, it’s easier than you might think!
@@RoadandRacetv Vibration through the steering wheel at motorway speeds could well be flat spots on the wheels, from potholes, and is probs what caused yours to crack. Did your discs really come off that easily? You make it look like a 10 second job lol! Mine needed lots of persuasion with a large hammer. The new wheels look pretty boss, great vid as always, looking forward to the next one!
@@oliversharp7383 Almost definitely a buckled wheel or two. Had the exact same thing on my E91 335i M Sport, judder at 75 mph. When I had the wheels proffessionally re-furbed they straightened the both front wheels, thankfully there no cracks and the judder was gone. .
I am totally amazed about the wheels you've found for the BMW! They look absolutely perfect on the car and you really have to look twice to see them not to be the original ones. Superb choice! Great video, so much fun to see you getting a more and more great 5series Greetings from Bavaria
I've always used Kumho as they offered replacement tyres if you pop your originals and you just pay for the wear. I was told they were going under so i'd have to brand swap, looks like I was had!!
I thought these like the e90 models need the brakes bleeding via a laptop with software and the ABS pump to prime it etc? Or something along those lines
Thanks for the tip on buying R90 approved brake parts - I don't want to give my insurer the opportunity to push the premium up if I can help it. On that topic then, what about the brake hoses - will they not be seen as a departure from standard spec ? Keep the videos coming :)
Not sure how wide those m sport wheels are but on my e91 which shares engines with yours has 8J wheels on the front an 8.5J on the rear. The J is basically the width of the wheel in inches. An 8J wheel fits ideally 225-235 tyres but you can have as little as a 215 and as big as a 245 on it. Hence mine comes as standard with 225 on the front and 255 on the rears. Say that yours has 8.5J wheels all round and 245 tyres to go with you can still safely fit 255s. Reason the previous owner might have done it is to get more grip out of the drive tyres.
Once you had cleaned the EGR and the DPF did you notice your mpg go up. I have a 2004 5 series 2.5 touring and getting an avaerage of 30MPG is this normal for an older 5er?
Thanks but wanted to say there's a mechanic called Eric and his channel South Main Auto in the US and he has a daft noise when he brings out the Brake cleaner for cleaning all his customers'... (discs that have oil on) :D
I have a 320i e90 2011 BMW and i started to have the same problem with shuddering and starts at 80 km/h but i have the same 235/40 R18 size in all 4 wheels. In your case, Would you say that the problem was that crack in your wheel?. And By the way ... brilliant job with your videos !
Remember that new discs should be thoroughly de-greased before fitting, as they are usually supplied with a protective oil finish 👍🏻 Also, the pistons in REAR calipers generally have to be wound back in - they can't be pressed in 👍🏻
@@andynorris3537 The e61 and 5 series tourings in general never usually have wider rear wheels fitted due to the fact the rear suspension setup is airbag and it could foul on the bags if it was on its lower limit hence the narrorwer tyres all round :)
I'm currently looking for a 530i touring. Possibly a 330i. I just couldn't bring myself to buy a diesel. Great vid as usual. Purchased my 530i touring yesterday. Do you have a link for the black grill you bought?
the bigger tyre at the back is called staggered wheel set up lots of BMW have it from factory so the tyre place didnt just changed it cause the didnt have the right once
Run flats are crap ! and ruin the ride, but...as someone who had a high speed blow-out and ended up rolling several times, I like the extra insurance of them being drive able if they blow at motorway speeds. I also find the price of run flats is dropping a lot, to almost match non run flats. Completely understand you changing them though and the those new wheels are amazing.
I got lucky and experienced blown tires on the Autobahn - with and without run flat tyres. At higher speeds it doesnt matter so much if you have run flats.I was able to stablise my car, but the rims were damagaged beyond repair in both cases. Standard tires are my cup of tea, because of the comfort they offer
i wonder how much money you could have saved by making the brake lines yourself with earl's\goodridge\etc fittings and hoses, it's quite easy and simple.
