Utterly nonsensical battles is a problem that Game of Thrones as always had when not adapting a battle from the books. The show inevitably goes for shock and awe and loses all narrative or logical coherence. But the Battle of Winterfell is when this bad habit reaches its zenith.

They should have every soldier wear a necklace with piece of dragon glass so when the Night king raised them they would have died immediately and Jon would have had an easy path to him. Just imagine the look on night kings face when his best move didn’t work

Necklaces won't work, dragonglass piercings might. And also raising the dead is not his best move. He can summon Blizzards, disenchant wards, and also is one of the best wargs, second only to Bran (why do you think he can raise and control all the wights so seamlessly, duh). And also being about 11k years old, he must be good at using that bigass falx he carries on his back.

Also, the way Arya kills the Night King (with the knife dropping from one hand to another while she jumped out of nowhere) reminded me of those funny nonsensical Bollywood scenes. First time I watched it I laughed out lout but it made me sad to see how far the show had gone down :(

I really thought that they'd go with Gendry learning how to reforge Valyrian steel then Arya would have asked him to meltdown the Cat's Paw to make a quiver of Valyrian steel arrows and she kills the Night King with a bow and arrow calling back to her and Bran's introduction in season 1.

In many castle sieges the women are said to have showered debris/rocks on the besieging army if there were not enough men to garrison the entire walls.. Not cowering in the basement.

As a GOT fan, I really enjoyed your deep analysis of what made the series really bad towards the end. I believe seasons 1-4 were the best television ever made; sad to see it go down the drain like this :( Really enjoyed your 'The Wolf Among Us' comparison as well.
@renaigh
@renaigh 2 года назад
the best Television ever made was Avatar: the Last Airbender, GoT S1 was decently adapted from a far superior written story but so much of the budget they had for the later seasons was completely wasted on making the Dragons look as spectacular in the forefront of frame as humanly possible, I respect the effort it took to produce but they should've kept them in the distance the bigger they got and only used close ups when absolutely necessary.

I think the show has proved that Tyrion Lannister is a terrible strategist. He really should not be part of any part of the war planning effort after his disastrous performance in Battle of the Blackwater and Meereen. He can handle the logistics of feeding the army and government. It'd be like Tom Hagen - not a wartime counselor.

The Dothraki are light cavalry. They should do targeted strikes with flaming arrows and whatnot and then retreat and harass the enemy every step of the way. The direct charge makes no sense.

Have the men defending the castle from inside obviously, with obsidian arrow heads But have the masses of undead be pulling up against the wall like in World War Z Have the Night King attacking the dragons (on his own dragon) so that they can’t set the wights ablaze Then have the men atop the castle walls have to slice down the eights as they breach over (We can also have wights trying to chop down the main gate, successfully or not, maybe a small opening that slowly gets larger allowing more and more in Then from there they can either win somehow by dismounting and killing the Night King Or they can lose and have only a few who can manage, escape on horseback (either through an escape tunnel in the crypts or wherever, or by dragon back, perhaps on horseback if they are ableTo get out) And then the army would continue south (if it were up to me I’d have the army of the dead win)

I said all along that the Dothraki should have been given a means to signal either the defenders or the dragons, then harass the flanks of the army of the dead to the point where they start breaking formation or The Night King was forced to reveal himself and deal with the situation. If he doesn't go after the Dothraki then he's sending bodies away from the main fight, if he does go after them, then the dragons know where to be.

I feel ya. I'm the same. Only one thing would bring me Katharsis Game Of Thrones Season 8 Episode 7: An Unbridled Rage by Mauler. But he said in the recent stream he despised what they did in Season 8 and such a video may have taken months to make he was forgetting what happened in the entire show. Plus, he missed the window time when it was revalent. It's how much he loathed what happened in that season. We may not see his video. I'm amazed how much the showrunners and writers ruined the entire legacy of Game of Thrones that House of the Dragon tries to revive and fix. I believe we would only see a proper GoT ending when the show would be remade in a decade or so with a new cast... maybe G.R.R. Martin would force his lazy butt to finish the books by then. The ending we got in GoT is what Martin envisioned but after the poor reception from the show, he's kinda stuck if he should pursue such an ending still or change it.

I was so frustrated and disappointed with how this whole story turned out around the White Walkers and the Night King. I remind that the very first minute of the series, first season, first episode, it was the White Walkers and not political discussions between noble families or whatever. I think that's where the series is completely broken. For me all the wars, stories etc... between the houses, the kingdoms were precisely to show the absurdity of people fighting among themselves over stupid things while the greatest threat arrived gently before the climax of last season, where we could have had a wonderful season where those who hate each other should have cooperated in despair, but instead we just had this big shit.

The thing is they had knowledge that the night king was coming to winterfel for months.... they could of build multiple fire trenches with the man power and time, even makeshift wooden barriers surrounding the whole castle stretching for hundreds of meters from the walls. They could of drenched the surrounding forrest in oil with pit falls ect.

I would have circled around from behind the WW with the all the valaryan steel swords and start cutting down the ww lieutenants therefore cutting down the army by the thousands making the battle more realistic instead of all the plot armor protecting the main players.

as I reread A Storm Of Swords I noticed a lot of similarities between this episode and Samwell 1, possibly the most intense Chapter in all the Books and the first (and only) time one of the Others is killed, especially with how they frame Sam amongst the Chaos of Wight's and Soon-to-be-Wights.

I actually really enjoyed this, and your points are spot on. I always assumed that the humans would ride South as the dead ravaged everything in their path, deal with Cersei, and THEN have an huge epic fight defending King’s landing. The fact that the war we’re waiting for since season 1 was covered in one battle at Winterfell (and poorly lit at that), was just a let down.

@@rtxa Agreed. I think NK could have won in the Battle of Winterfell, bringing casualties like Jorah and Theon, forcing Jon' and Dany's army to retreat. It would establish NK's army as a new threat level never seen in the series. The episode 4 could be dedicated to the build to the decisive and final battle between the living and the dead in King's Landing (episode 5 itself), where the whole Westeros realize once for all their only chance to survive is to put their differences aside to defeat the common enemy. We could see Cersei's madness raising, Westerosis rejection towards Dany slowly fading away and so on. The episode 6 could have still been the Grand Finale, but with different outcome and no Daenerys's abrupt personality change.

imagine a scenario where Winterfell eventually falls when Jon or Danaerys fail to kill the Night King and or die. With the fall of Winterfell, it would be followed by the ultimate fall of the North. it would actually be here where the southern kingdoms realize now that the threat of the white walkers was real and that the North had truly been to something this whole time, with the Nights Watch and all. Thus we would probably see the mobilization of the entirety of Southern Westeros in order to try and halt the deads advance. maybe they are still Unable to hold back the advance of the Dead and the whole of Westeros is thrown into an Ice age, the Long Night. or maybe they either the dead centrale into the Westerlands, the Riverlands, and the Crownlands, and maybe even reach Dorne before they are turned back. maybe this leads to a back and forth between an eventual defeat or by sheer will they are pushed back into the North, and if not completely destroyed then pushed back across the wall. in the midst of the Northern campaign, when Winterfell is recapture, it could be possible that the entirety of the castle is near completely empty as ALL bodies may have been raised back up before known lords and warriors' bodies would disappear into Westeros in later campaigns. But is possible, the fotress, once a powerful castle with a seat of authority, now lay literally frozen in time buried in feet or even meters in snow, heavily damaged from the battle that saw the fall of Danaerys Targaryen, House Stark, Winterfell, and the identity of the North....

In siege warfare, you keep your cavalry behind the walls at all times. Except when the opportunity arises for raids or shock attacks on weak enemy units. You should also dig ramparts and graves to concentrate the enemy into prepared kill zones. These must be at fixed distances for trebuchets, catapults, scorpio and bow and crossbow shooters. This is to simplify distance indication for each type of weapon.

You know what could easily fix this battle and most of Season 8?? Make them LOSE!!! They lose Winterfell, and everyone is forced to retreat to the South!!! We can still have the heroes still die in the Battle and the Dothraki all falling but within the walls, but it was all in vain. EVERYONE will be distraught, and they are forced to turn to their enemies for aid. With some persuasion, they agree a temporary alliance to face off The White Walkers and The Night King that'll determine the fate of all of Westeros
@piotrfijoek1095
@piotrfijoek1095 Месяц назад
To be fair, this must be the Long Night that would last a season so I'd see the forces of the North and Daenarys evacuate the civilian populations to the South, denying the Nigh King reinforcements from raising the dead. In the history, Romans did that to deny the enemies' battles and only start one that favors the defenders. Then the North should fortify the positions at the Twins and use guerilla warfare tactics to thin the numbers of the dead. Then we could have see Cersei going "Oh shit, the dead are serious threat than I thought" or something or have other Lanisters' commanders moving own troops to the North to defend the living after got reports the death is coming.

I love the idea of using Phalanx. But not ing Got. Putting light cavallary in front was really stupid. Rush-lose non-tactic. Same stupid as putting siege equipments in the frontline, while there is a HUGE castle in the rear. Insteat using of super slow Trebuchets I would prefer to use fire mangonels on castle towers same as trapping ground with some pitch ditches (a lot of them) they can also use oil on wood logs on the walls. Basically prioritize every fire-related siege opportunity they could use. Also it was all about defeating death, I would totally involve every men, women and children to help as much as they can to improve battle morale. I also focus on ranged units, rather than melee units. Slow them down as much as its possible and shoot them from a distance. Based on the knowledge by the group that brought the dead to KL, Dead never uses ranged weapons. Shooting on them from a distance makes sense more, than fighting them on close quarters. The problem with Cercei. If they will be OK with Cersei, and she send troops north, they should move more to the south. They are dead body these deads, they are just controlled by White walkers, I think with higher temperatures their decomposition could be faster and killing them could be more effective. Also putting trenches on fire on is easier during autumn and hotter weather , than doing it in deep winter. - - - - - - They win the battle of Witerfell with enormous number of luck and basically no strategic knowlege. I bet you if there would be Tywin Lannister or Randyll Tarly alive, the war would be much easier and better strategized. But don't be such negative and tell me. Were there someone in defense, who actually had some experience with defending siege?

Lets not include the Loot Train Attack in the list of tactically stupid battle depictions in GoT, please. The LTA made perfect sense from both sides from start to finish. Danny had an insane advantage attacking the Lannister Army while they were undeployed and did everything right, from cutting a breach into the impromptu Lannister shield wall and having her Dothraki roll them up from that flank, to focussing on the main objective (destroying the loot), switching to deal with anti air on the fly and finally routing the enemy. The Lannisters did what they could to mount a defense while not being prepared at all. The shield wall made sense against riders but wasn't deep enough and overstretched on account of them not having been deployed for battle.

Its good that AI is getting better and better, because maybe in 5y time, we'll be able to fix this battle by ourselves :D Anyway, I think the battle is pretty much unfixable, because the issue alone isn't just the tactic, but the battle and the outcome itself... something that was a threat for 8 seasons was ended in one episode. Thats not good.

You do realize that for everything either it be a show, movie, book or whatever there is an internal logic right? In this show, in case you haven’t realized just yet, the internal logic contemplates dragons, Undead people and all of that, while it literally most of the decisions taken when it comes to this battle made no sense, it is ok to say that is not realistic based on the logic of how medieval war worked or from a strategic point of view is unrealistic how experienced people handled the battle in such an illogical way, so you should think a bit better before writing something lacking a basic understanding of what internal logic is
