Dim or no display is a common problem on the Sony SL-C9 Betamax video recorder, and is due to failure of the DC-DC converter module. Here we repair one which has intermittent operation.

Today Feb, 2nd, 2024 i received a 2nd hand SLC9e, not es. Repaired many of them in the early '90 for Sony Netherlands. This Betamax was the one with the most standard issues which where fixed under warranty ( I think). Problems where : not closing front door, broken nylon gear cassette loading compartiment (CLC) (replaced by metal gear version). On the side of the CLC a kit (o-ring + tiny screw) was added for the problem the 2 plastic components got apart from each other. The black nylon gear with metal inner ring was replaced by a full nylon gear. Broken loading rings where also common on the Betamax after the C5,6 and 7 models. On the loadingring there are 2 tape guides who where replaced by better fitting one. Than of course the DC-DC converter. The sensor in the lowerdrum motor with the glue issue. The solenoid with broken internal fuse (behind tape, not direct visible) on the reel table. Just put an shunt wire as solution :) . Also tape guides on both ends got loosen. And . . . . a burned Servo System board , burned and heavy damaged by the transistor driver for the unique Reelmotor. Sometimes stereo audioheads where too damaged by many hours of use Betamax tapes , PB, FF and REW use. It was a great time a technician for Sony NL.

Interesting video and a good fix. I did wonder how successful the hot air gun would be at desoldering the cover but glad to see it did the trick. Couldn't help but notice the little yellow/orange drawers above your TV. I've had some of these since I was a child and have them up in my workshop too. I find the handles break eventually so have 3D printed some stronger replacements. 😀

The hot air gun was certainly the answer to this problem. Those old drawers were from my previous workshop (and one before that), really they need replacement. I'm going through updating a lot of my storage solutions since I've just moved into a new workshop which is much more RU-vid friendly.

Sony SL-C99 and SLF1 portable were a masterclass in design. I loved my C9
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
Three major design changes I would have made though: Much simpler and more reliable C9 cassette carriage. Eliminate the DC-DC converter for the clock and tuner on C9. Redesign cabinet work on F1 so that it is possible to access the top of deck without taking the whole machine to pieces and risking flexi-cable damage.

Sony is such a mysterious organization, how did the manage to create such a massive catalog of so many diverse and high precision machines ? And with incredible design too, that VCR is magnificent!
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
It wasn't Sony's most reliable of machines though. The front loading mechanism was particularly troublesome. On later Beta models, they came up with a much more robust front loading carriage.

A very nice looking machine, yes the display was brighter after the DC-DC converter was repaired.

This is PAL version of SL-2500 in North America but this one is linear stereo ( not HI-FI) audio and sl-2500 is mono. But sl-2700 came to US market that Hi-Fi version of 2500.

Hello, I have questions please, Where can I find video head for Sony Betamax Sl-200me ? Does Sony Betamax sl-2300 video head fits on Betamax Sl-200me ?
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
I don't know for sure, you would have to look up the service manuals to see the head part numbers. The SL200ME is PAL/SECAM but that wouldn't in itself require different heads to a PAL machine. But the SL-2300 is NTSC only so I doubt that it uses the same heads as a PAL/SECAM model.

Question...I have a sl-2500 that powers on but has no visible display. I lifted the cover and noticed two thin wires (red and black) attached to a small black connector that wasn't connected to anything. The wires were maybe 5 inches long. The wires were coming out of the right side of the display module. I can't find where this is supposed to plug into. Do you have any ideas? Thanks!
@video99couk
@video99couk 3 года назад
I don't know what the wires are for. I suspect the lack of display is due to DC-DC converter failure, that's very common. It also takes out the tuner, so you might be able to test for that and prove that you're on the right track, if you can find a way to get a signal for it to tune into.
@jimbanville

@@video99couk Thanks for the reply! I looked at the service manual for the player in this video (basically the same as the SL-2500) and it looks like the two wires attached to the black connector go to a small board below the display called SL1 (I think or SV1?) and is for some "monitor/camera" selection. Maybe someone tried to fix the display and failed to reconnect it. I was hoping it was a "power" wire for the display. Lol. I'll look at your video in more depth and look at replacing those bad caps. Thanks!

Is there a C9 that can play SECAM tapes? A few years ago someone near me was selling one for 100 euros but I passed because it didn't play SECAM with proper colour.

I don't know! There were various Sony, Sanyo and Toshiba Beta machines that could play SECAM tapes but I don't know if there was a SECAM version of the C9.

I've got the same player with no display as well.But I don't have a tale do I need a tape to see the display?
@video99couk
@video99couk 11 месяцев назад
The display should be working with no tape inserted. It almost certainly has a bad DC-DC converter, and possibly other faults too. Tapes are easy enough to find, they were made in their millions.

Hello. I bought a used SL-C9 and upon turning it on (without cassette) it goes straight to lacing, then unlaces along with some unhealthy sounds and the eject light stays blinking. Can you please help me?
@video99couk
@video99couk Год назад
The lacing and cassette mechanisms on the C9 are unnecessarily complicated. I'm afraid it's not possible to fault-find my remote control, this is going to take the attention of someone familiar with video recorder repair.

Hi, i really love your repair video guides very much. Maybe you can answer my question. I am also an owner of a SL-C9ES machine. Unfortunately one video head is broken. Is it possible to replace this 3 head video head with a 2 head video head, like it is used in almost all other Sony Betamax recorders (e.g. the SL-F1)?
@video99couk
@video99couk Год назад
I had always assumed that the F1 and C9 took the same heads, but never checked. I don't know what would happen if you fitted the wrong heads.

Thank you very much for your very quick reply. Yes, i thought the same until i checked the service manuals today. The upper drum is still the same, but not the video heads. So there is no other chance then to try it because i cannot get anywhere the SL-C9 3 head video head.

Just a short feedback. Playback, recording and normal picture search are working very nice. The special picture search functions of course not about the 3rd head (A') which is missing with the 2 head video drum now. Do you have any idea from where i could get the original head?

Hello from Australia, I have been lucky to find two C9 machines, although one of them won't play,,, everything else works eg, picture search forward and review but won't stay on Play mode, it starts to play for half a second then stops...!, Any clue...! Thanks again.
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 года назад
Is the head drum spinning at full speed (rather than just being dragged around by the tape)? If not, then suspect Hall Effect sensor in the lower drum. How about freeze frame? If that works, then there may be a capstan servo fault or problem with takeup spool speed.

Hi Colin , just been looking at the C9 again,,, it seems to be loading tapes okay and all the special effects frame by frame half speed , pause and review is all working as it should, although I need to be quick as soon as I hit Play I need to activate pause or frame controls otherwise it won't work, you might be right about the capstan....! Any ideas on how to check this..! ((Also Picture Search doesn't work))..is it somehow connected to play mode..! Thanks again Carlo.

@@carlzaffino3434 See towards the end of my other video about C9 repairs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iuPSf7KdOag.html I suspect you may have a capacitor failure on the lower PCB. There aren't that many so if you don't have a good ESR capacitance tester then you could just replace them all.

@@rennobecker9032 Oh dear. It's going to be a case of checking the transistors against the schematic. Most transistors should appear as a diode from base to each of collector and emitter (for NPN) and open circuit between collector and emitter. So you can probably test most of them in place.

@@video99couk Well, thanks to the always loaded tape. VHS achieved this in late 1987 when AKAI invented the "Quick Start" mechanism, with also always loaded tape. The Sync head needs to be in contact with the tape. But in general I still preferred Video 2000 with their absolute time counter.

Years ago i had a mates vcr in for a no display fault, there was no supply to the flourescent display, While moving the vcr i noticed a slight tin sounding rattle. Inside a small tin box near the display was the oscillator, the coil would of had an aluminium cap with info on it, the glue had given up the ghost and the cap fell into the component area. No parts were damaged as a micro fuse had popped, i left the cap out of the box :-D I also cleaned the inside glass of the fasia, it never gets cleaned :-( If you don't like waffle comments please tell me. I used to be on c.b radio and i could talk the legs off a whole field of donkeys lol :-D
