Fixing the Doctor Who 5.1 Blu-Ray Theme

The 5.1 mixes of many of the Tom Baker Blu-Ray collections uses a particularly weird opening theme that seems to merge the intro from the original mono 1970 Derbyshire remix into what seems to be Mark Ayres' stereo remaster of the 1963 theme. Apart from sounding really weird, this is obviously the wrong version of the title music to use for these episodes and I have no idea why the BBC have chosen to do this. This video shows how a new 5.1 or stereo mix of the proper 1970 opening theme could sound much better. While I understand that using the original mono version may have been deemed unacceptable for a 5.1 release, I don't see how the BBC couldn't have commissioned something like this considering the amount of work that went into turning the rest of the original mono audio of the episodes into 5.1. Especially as presumably a mix made from the original Derbyshire masters would sound much better than this!
Side note: RU-vid's copyright detection is garbage. Had to try uploading this about ten times because it blocked it worldwide for having footage from "The Power of Kroll" in it. The titles are literally from Genesis of the Daleks lads, it says right there.

Oh my God, THANK YOU! No one else ever seems to notice this when I point it out. It's so nice to hear a version that tries to sound more like the actual 1970 theme.

Thank god the German Blu-ray releases of Pandastorm include stereomixes where the audio of the intro is kept original. You can tell the difference cuz it has this slight distortion and really sounds old like it come from a 16mm optical audio soundtrack. I think 5.1 only exists for certain stories that have special releases like alternative cuts and feature length versions.

Ngl, the real blu Ray audio sounds like a pretty good idea on paper. Throughout the 3rd and 4th doctor's series, the "woo wee woo" sound felt less neat compared to the OG 60s audio so it's nice that they tried to fix that. Tho, the way it's handled is as if someone used audio mixing on capcut for the first time.

I never realised until just now! Didn't like the way how the 5:1 mix turned out, no offence. Was there any explanation as to why they didn't use the 'regular' 1970s theme for the 2017 release of Shada?
@TheMI7G
@TheMI7G 3 года назад
Yeah, it might not seem like much but considering that a lot of effort was clearly spent on the rest of the 5.1 mixes it stands out as pretty odd to neglect something so noticeable! Good question about Shada - I asked a friend who knows more and apparently the theme was remade from scratch from the original Derbyshire elements, and they just decided to do it that way rather than copying the 1970s theme. No idea why though, considering it clearly isn’t right!

Mark Ayres had tried to recreate the 1970 edit of the theme tune to compliment the 5.1 soundtrack. While he has access to the original elements of the first version of the theme he doesn’t have access to some of the elements of the subsequent re-edits including the wobbly spangly bits at the beginning the oozhoo into the main melody and extended zshhhhh into the repeat and fade. His first version was on the Shada Blu Ray, which is entirely 5.1 with a subsequent edit for planet of the Daleks onwards, starting in mono then mixing into the 5.1. I’m sure he’ll correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m assuming it was an editorial decision to start in mono then mix to 5.1. I personally don’t find that mix clumsy because the theme tune Suddenly opens up like a gigantic window when it comes powering out of all five channels on my amp
@iLikeTheUDK

There was an attempt to extract the spangles iirc in a mix he did in 2004 or 2005 which was used in a rough cut of Rose

@@RandomNameLastName811 I just listened to the remix from this video in mono. My ONLY complaint is that there is a lack of dynamic range compared to the original mono mix. It sounds fantastic to me both mono and stereo, but in particular lacks some of the deeper "punch" when the TARDIS transitions into the tunnel effect, and when the diamond logo vanishes. There is a dynamic pulse to the echoes in the final refrain/loop of the original mono, which is not present in this remix also. But the stereo placement of the elements in the remix is beautiful. It's not just a chorus or delay or haas effect, I love it.
@aleatoriac7356

@@RandomNameLastName811 I agree As a side, do you think there will be sufficient enhancement technology (say in the next 5 years) to "upscale" the old studio footage (shot on video) in classic Doctor Who to a quality comparable to modern HD? All the Doctor Who Blu Ray material I've seen doesn't look significantly better than the DVDs.

Real ROSE rough cut theme hours 😂 Anyway, how did you do this? It's amazing! I'd probably turn the melodica more down and/or take out some of the highs so it sounds more like the August 1963 "single" edit that all versions with the spangles were made from, and maybe also tame the delay to some degree to appease Delia's spirit as well as maybe add some subtle, airy reverb (some fake plate reverb maybe?) to some of the tracks, making sure neither really drown out anything below the mids or high mids. But I love it!!
@Bruh-zx2mc
@Bruh-zx2mc Год назад
The 67 theme lives off of that delay. As much as I respect Delia, I think the 67 theme is just as deserving of a spotlight as the original.

I doubt the BBC have anything to do with this, or indeed many editorial decisions on the blu-rays. It could well be a creative decision by Mark Ayres. I guess there's also creative camps of 70s loyalty vs Delia Derbyshire pureism. Since Derbyshire hated the 70s theme revamps, and many might prefer the original 63 version, its just another creative debate brought about by the new special editions, which many might see as a experimental or creative divergence, from the original restored episodes, which are left separate, for those that just want to enjoy the originals.

Here's a question, Why couldn't they just leave the theme alone and put the exact theme that we all heard back in 1975 at the start of the episodes. Why try to 're-do' it or try to make it stereo.

It’s specifically the “2002 stereo remix”: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Drb-slxlmg.html. Though in hindsight I don’t think this is that, I think it’s a new stereo mix with elements of the 70s theme added in but with lots wrong. Which is even weirder!
