@@maggpiprime954 Also, an Easter Egg, when they eventually started using the term, used to refer to obscure bits you had to search for in order to find them, not an obvious reference shoved in your face ;).
They had a great relationship but the chemistry between Tom Baker and Romana 2 (Lalla Ward) was electric and very saucy, in a discreet sort of way. Possibly helped by the fact that they were in a relationship in real life at the time.
In all the episodes I have seen so far (mostly modern) they have only shown the control room which makes me sad because I want to see more of the TARDIS!
The TARDIS wasn't really shown very much during Doctor Who's original run. In fact, before the 4th Doctor you barely got out of the console room. And shortly after Peter Davison's first season, again you barely saw the rest of the TARDIS - not even the whole console room for Sylvester McCoy's last season. So it is primarily the 4th Doctor's tenure that enlarged the TARDIS. Therefore NuWho is not so different old series. Mostly the TARDIS's huge interior is just alluded to. We get to see a wardrobe in The Christmas Invasion. But The Doctor's Wife & Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS (both Matt Smith stories) do give a reasonable view.
I wish they had more of these moments in the rebooted series, where the Doctor isn't running around and talking at 100 miles an hour. A scene where the Doctor and companion are just hanging out in the TARDIS, where nothing is at stake.
Well given that we only have one episode per story now we don't have the time classic who can do it because they take stories that would take about two episodes and then deliberately draw them out
This console room perfectly fits Tom Baker's incarnation of the character. Wish they'd used it longer than they did. It also features one of my all-time favourite scenes, in which the Doctor uses a few boxes to explain to Leela how the TARDIS is bigger on the inside.
I remember reading an interview with (I think) Robert Holmes, who said that they intended to use the wood paneled console room in the 15th season ("Horror of Fang Rock" to "Invasion of Time"), but that in between seasons, the set was dismantled and put into a storage unit that got flooded by a rainstorm. The paneling had gotten warped and it would cost too much money to repair, so they just had the Doctor go back to the original console room. Truly a pity.
Although it's only seen in FOUR stories (and only maybe five episodes in total) it was THE Tardis set for MONTHS when the show was on once a week for 22 minutes. I LIKE to think that the TV MOVIE Tardis Set is the same room after some reconfiguring, mainly because of the console. It is, after all, the primary console room- SOMETHING THEY FORGOT WHEN THEY INTRODUCED THE FUGITIVE DOCTOR !
BBC: "It's the late 70s, what's cool now?" Marketing: "Wood panelling and cowbells." BBC: "Well, the budget will only let us really invest in one of those." Set designer: "Say no more."
Loved the "Second control room" with it's steampunkish feel. and its mysterious, archaic designs in the panels. Gives the feeling that the TARDIS is a very old machine build by a powerful race of beings. Which of course it is! :-).
Late 3 and 4 could pilot the tardis rather well all things considered it was just that the tardis herself became dodgy when it came to navigation it’s why the 5th doctor replaced the console in the 5 doctors trying to get her up to running order
@@jordanreed3675 well they all make the voorp noise, and each model has a slightly different tone. It is the extra and very distinct whine and grind in addition to the voorp that the Doctor's TARDIS makes, especially when taking off, that is distinct. I think it also kind of becomes a joke among the renegades to do it too, either that or it is just one of least necessary things to do to dematerialize/materialize so they just don't bother when flying alone...
The Master's TARDIS usually materialized/dematerialized silently, as did a few others. It was River Song that made the crack about 'leaving the parking brake on' once and made a time/space jump without the noise and the (Matt Smith) Doctor got pissy about it. "I rather like the noise..."
For those complaining about the space effects and how it’s just water with balls in it, you MUST remember. No one was watching this on a backlit cellphone 5 inches from their face. They were watching it on fuzzy, grainy, small tube TV’s 12 feet away from them. I’m sure it looked mesmerizing and exciting back then. Lay off.
We had nothing to compare it to. To us, each time some creator has an idea for a neat visual effect, it was worth looking at just for itself. None of us thought "Oh, yes, THAT is what reality looks like". Even things like the view being the point of view of a Cyber-mat, down on the floor and limited in its focus, were interesting.
Well, back in the day, people also used something called imagination. I think film makers and TV producers have gotten too heavily into making really cool explosions on a computer and forgotten how to tell a good story. (Oh. And one more thing, the special effects on doctor who were crappy even for that time period. It was part of the shows charm.)
Yeah, that was their intention. Unfortunately, it proved to be rather unpopular with viewers at the time and so it was quickly scrapped. Pity, because quite a bit of of time & $$$ went into it...
@@MrPGC137 well the secondary control room isn't popular but the most common version of why it went off was because it was warped you know cuz it was cheap wood paneling and I feel like wood paneling isn't something you could do easily on a BBC budget so even if people didn't like it they would keep it the entire back wall for the one of the second doctor tortoises were literally just photographs of the first doctor's Tardis like the photographic roundoff but also a third blown up photograph of the fault locator
I would have just loved to see Patrick Troughton pop out of the console like he did in the 3 Doctors and thank Sarah Jane for finding his recorder, play a few bars, then pop right out again.
"Thank you! I was wondering where that had got to! You haven't been trying to play this, have you? Oh! I can see you've been doing the TARDIS up a bit! I don't like it."
A recorder, from the second Doctor[Troughton], and a fluffy, Carnaby Street shirt, compliments of the third Doctor[Pertwee]. Evidently both were in the secondary control room at one point. Exploring the TARDIS would be a good activity for the current occupants.
@@GenniBGood Probably once the TARDIS realized they’d be using the secondary control room she made another exit door there are switched the control rooms around. The TARDIS is very flexible.
it's my favourite, despite the fact that the shaving mirror was stuck on there at the last minute because they ran out of time and money to make a time rotor in the middle of the console.
Oh yeah the Masterpiece that was the '60s concert room and the mountain of buttons and controls that was the '80s one but no the best one is this vinyl wood piece of crap
I really disliked this one when it was first shown. I could never figure out how all the functions of the big console could be run from a couple of small panels.
In a Jon Pertwee episode, she proudly proclaimed "I can sink anywhere!" The Doctor was taking her to a planet with effervescent water, and told her she wouldn't need waterwings!
Sarah "Oh it's a big barrel of water being drained and someone's drop polystyrene balls in it!" Doctor "It's the Mandragora Helix. I thought we'd avoided it." Sarah "It's just coloured water !?" Doctor "It's a spiral of pure energy that radiates outwards in ways no one understands, though at its centre there's a controlling intelligence." Sarah "but it's spirals in not out ... Shouldn't they have reversed the film ???" Doctor "Yes but the BBC budget couldn't afford it !"
Yeah, I feel like there were a couple of things they could have done to make it look a tad less like coloured water with polystyrene balls draining out of a sink. Double-exposed the film with a backdrop of stars? Blow some smoke across the top? Put the camera out of focus a little? Literally anything other than what they did, which appears to be nothing at all...
Bare in mind that this was 'state-of-the-art' special effects back then! Even the spinning Tardis was just a small inch and a half (1.81cms) long painted wooden cube! Remember also the fearsome Daleks which looked better in black and white were in fact just composed of spare parts from Morris Minors, disco lights, and to top it! Whisks and toilet plungers!
@@sanchoodell6789 They had the ability to do a double-exposure, that alone would have made a major difference. They could have put a mask on the camera to make the swirl look smaller, and, therefore, make it seem more like an object suspended in the blackness of space. As I said, there are many things they could have done using inexpensive technology they had at the time.
Out of all the classic Doctor's, Tom Baker is my favourite. The new series is how I discovered doctor who but 10 and 4 are what made me love the series as a whole. 4 and Sarah Jane have such good chemistry they're like bickering siblings or an old married couple at times. Also that scarf. That scarf is perfection incarnate.
Grew up on pbs airings of Doctor Who from the Pertwee/Baker era. Tom will always be MY doctor. Though now Capaldi is my 2nd fave. The forcing of PC hot garbage aside you never had a better actor in the role. The kind of thing that #6 Colin Baker (no relation) was aiming for. Gruff but becomes more open later. As a charachter study its great stuff. Especially heaven sent!! Might be the greatest script. Goes through the stages of grief so well. Well 10 more seasons of who were great addition.
The Tenth Planet - I agree with you a lot as the Fourth Doctor is my fav of all the Doctors as he is soo funny , loving and Would you care for a Jelly Baby is great , my next fav classic would be the Five Doctor and from Morden Who it is The Tenth Doctor
You know, I would play the hell out of a video game set in the TARDIS, where there's no enemies, no plot, and all you do is wander around checking stuff out. Ideally, the designers would include handcrafted recreations of several different console rooms, along with other locations seen or mentioned in various episodes. (I.e. the wardrobe, the pool, the boot cupboard, etc.) The rest of the TARDIS' infinite structure would be procedurally generated, and might possibly reconfigure itself from time to time just to keep you on your toes.
as a vr game this would work well but for non vr we need a war doctor game where he's shown as the warrior/doctor no more charicter and its an fps with each level being a new place in space and time As a side note while were talking video games i love vr butt i dislike the idea of it replacing non vr i see vr as a seperate experiance and a novality that losesits fun if you play more than 3 hours a week on a regular basis)
I had no idea Classic Who actually showed beyond the TARDIS' control room. New Who should do this a lot more, feels homey, gives the idea that the Doctor could actually live in it cause (s)he probably _does_
The reason they avoid doing so was succinctly summed up by RTD - the whole point of the TARDIS is to "get to the story" - and really should be no more than a sort of camper van - minimum comfort - enough to survive - as soon as it becomes the story - the Doctor has less and less motivation to get out and adventure. They don't want the Doctor too comfortable in the TARDIS - they want him fidgeting, restless, and can't wait to land and go somewhere else.
You see so many TARDIS rooms in Classic Who! There's an entire First Doctor story where they never leave the TARDIS + there's a Fourth Doctor scene which takes the piss out of re-using sets due to budget lol.
@@schubertuk That excuse is utter bafflegab and nothing more. The motivation lies in the quest for knowledge the righting of wrongs on a cosmic scale and having a bit of fun in the process. There can still be the TARDIS herself(oh..my dear old thing..)that can become the story-or an integral part of it. And you need to look no further than the self quarantining and complaints that the wealthy and celebrities bemoan about being forced to remain in their opulent mansions completer with their own saunas, heated swimming pools, theaters and so on. And if they are itching to be able to leave such comforts then there is absolutely no issue of my wan-I mean "The Doctor" wanting to get out to explore and experience the wonders of all space/time and not simply lounge about inside of even the most luxurious interiors that the Tardis may have.
We do hear about parts of the Tardis in the newer series sometimes, even if we don't get to see it. We know there's a library, that may or may not have a swimming pool in it, a wardrobe with clothes to fit for all sorts of time periods, plus there's the fact that the companions have bedrooms of their own (which may have bunk beds with ladders, as well as disappear at the Tardis' will). I do like seeing the rooms from time to time, but I think if it happened all the time it would lose the novelty and excitement of those rare occurrences.
I love the suggestion that the doctor used to use this console room. The touch of the recorder, which suggests the 2nd doctor used it(which is a piece of the season 6B theory) is brilliant
Lots of " missing stories" between tv serials has always been canon. Obviuoslly he has used the room from time to time. Probablly when deep in the tardis and this room closer.
I really like those obvious gaps between Doctor Who stories where each Doctor could have had an entire set of unseen adventures, makes the show look even bigger than it is, not just the stories we see every week on tv.
@@SammEater I feel like that outlook's often necessitated by the show itself, like when it implies all the unseen adventures. Doesn't make it easy tho. You got the clips in "Rose" of 9 being seen in spots throughout history, despite his dalogue implying he's only just regenerated.
Jon Pertwee was my personal favourite but Tom Baker had a great charisma that he brought to the role and we all loved Elisabeth Sladen she played the role with a naive wonderment and prettiness too
“You humans have got such limited little minds! I don’t know why I like you so much.” “Because you have such good taste!” “That’s true! That’s very true!”
Back in the 1980's when watching this episode for the first time on my local PBS station, I had never seen the first two Doctor's control room. So, I was very impressed that there was an old style control console room on board to fly the ship.
@@IllustrationbyDesign I must be from an earlier generation because my FIRST crush was Jo Grant (Katie Manning) but lovely Liz wasn't far behind. Romana 1 and 2 were pretty damn gorgeous too.
Mr. Baker will always be THE Doctor in my eyes. Just like SJS will always be THE companion. I first started watching back in the late 80's when reruns were being shown on PBS. The 4th Doctor was my introduction to the franchise and he made a permanent impression on me of what the character is supposed to be. My number two Doctor is probably #10.
I think it's really charming and admirable how much they attempted to do with such limited resources. It gives the show a warmth I think it often lacks now.
Scared the hell out of me when I was a child. Also liked the chemistry between Sarah and Giuliano. Since she was forced to leave the Doctor one adventure later, I wonder if she regretted not staying behind with him in 15th Century Italy.
It's difficult to recall but I think Mask of Mandragora was the first episode I ever saw when I was 3 or 4 years old and it was on PBS where they had the narrator do a preface to each episode.
Chibnall: "Even better, 13 finds two more and one of them is the real master control room and it only activates if the doctor is female, yes that's brilliant"
Wish they'd re-rediscover the secondary TARDIS console room. Could have a bit where they find the fourth doctor's hat and the seventh doctor's umbrella or something just like this episode.
Every time I watch this scene, I wonder how Tom Baker isn't sweltering under that outfit, especially with the studio lights! The longer his tenure runs, the more and more casual he gets, like open collars, fewer layers, and wearing the scarf without wrapping it totally around his neck.
I saw this in College here in the U.S. Wonderful episode! The blend of the Renaissance era, the scenes in the eerie void of space and the intruding force were perfect. Plus, this wonderful opening scene!
The funny thing is when you realise this was Sarah Jane's second-to-last story. Which implies during the previous three seasons the Doctor just never got round to showing her the rest of the TARDIS.
speaking of Chibs... y'know how Doctor Who is supposed to be extremely northern with the (ugh) "fam"... well this era is the only time that Doctor Who has been properly northern... both Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen being scousers. Tom from Vauxhall and Elisabeth from Toxteth... one from the same road as Cilla Black, and the other from a neighbouring district to John Lennon.
When Sarah Jane started playing that flute (or recorder, whatever instrument it is) I thought "oh great, I'm watching a meme video" then she came into shot and I realised it was her XD
I really like this control room. Except for the console itself. Its too small. It feels inadequate. Imagine if it was similar to the first one but with the wood paneling theme. That would have made it one of the best control rooms in the show’s history.
this will always be my favorite console room. it was a nice change from the usual room. like some other comments, wish they kept it longer than this season. maybe for 14th doctor will find it again.
Sarah Jane Smith is *STILL* my favourite Companion, this many years (decades) later... The "second" control-room set-design was pretty cool; too bad they didn't get to use it longer than they did. (Apparently the fans weren't too happy with it, so all the time & money spent on it went up the spout. Pity, really...)
So much of why Four succeeded was having Sladen first. She was outstanding with Pertwee, and better with Baker. Her return in NuWho's season 2 episode School Reunion was a revelation. It introduced a central concept...that the Doctor doesn't hate losing nearly as much as he hates loss. It also opened the door for what she'd long deserved...her own series. Sladen was taken far too soon,
Just re watched this last night the incidental music through the whole programme was the same as the Blake's 7 I watched the night before. And I loved it.
One room I'd love to see come back. If only when someone runs across it by accident. Has to still be in the TARDIS somewhere. Every room from the classic era is still in there somewhere I'd think.
Who else wants a proper new wooden console room for the new series? EDIT: Would also just like to point out that I do not condone the series bashing going on in the replies to this comment. I just think that the wood aesthetic is **chef's kiss**
Only if it has a proper console with enough knobs and switches on it. I could never understand how that fiddly little thing could take the place of the original console. And it must have a proper up and downy glass thing. I'd still prefer a white one with roundels in a honeycomb pattern, but either would be so much better than those puke yellow rock efforts.
Back in the day when Doctor Who was truly fantastic! Now with all of its social engineering and deplorable writing, it's a rotting corpse! So sad. So very, very sad!!! R.I.P. Doctor.
I'd love to see this control room "rediscovered" in the show (the set would have to be newly built, obviously, but please match the original). The fact that the original set was damaged in storage and used for a shorter time than planned makes it all the more nostalgic to see these few episodes that featured it.
Just watching this charming scene starring the great Tom Baker and lovely Liz Sladen and an advert comes up asking me if I want to buy the latest season 12. They must be fucking joking!
I guess the 3rd Doctor was there in his attempts to making the Tardis work again when he was stranded on earth. To see if this console could get her moving but no doubt failed.
Tom Baker - still my favorite and the second doctor I ever saw on PBS in reruns as a kid. He kept showing up in anniversary and other special episodes where they brought old doctors back and most were special cameos.
I remember this scene it's one of my favorite all time scenes from one of my favorite doctors!!! Dr Who will always be my favorite shows of all time!!!!
My favorite exchange is from the Jon Pertwee eta. Sarah Jane, in a swim suit, was putting on water wings. The Doctor tells Sarah that she can't sink where he's taking her, because the water is effervescent. The bubbles support you. Sarah proudly proclaims "I can sink anywhere!"
"come to think of it, it IS the old one." so was the one when Matt Smith found it in his episode... wait so is the secondary control room always the shape of the previous primary control room?
No, there are multiple Console Rooms throughout. The one here is never seen before this episode. The "old one" before Tom would have been the big Hartnell original back in the pilot. Baker's is used up through Seventh Doctor. Then McGann's massive beauty (which might have been a remodeled Hartnell console room). Then Eccleston/Tennant corral. Then Smith's toyroom. Is his second one remodeled from the toyroom look, or a new altogether? Long story short, just because you can change the "desktop theme" of the rooms, doesn't mean they are all the same one room throughout. As evidenced by them showing us this one with Four.
In the history of television, only Doctor Who can get away with dumping blue dye and Styrofoam balls into a toilet, flushing it and calling it “special effects”
