Fixing the Pancakes' Eastlake Victorian - Rebuild Like a Nerd

Today we are rebuilding the Pancake household's home, Pique Hearth. Presumably a Queen Anne or Eastlake Victorian, this home came in the base game world Willow Creek when the game was released in 2014. I really wanted to keep as much of the original shape as possible, as it is incredibly iconic, but change the floorplan and furnishing to make a little more sense and entirely lose the three tile stairs and extraordinary blandness. Also, poor Bob had literally the worst possible bed, so we definitely fixed that. You can share your feedback and nominate the next makeover target in the comments or on Discord.
In the Rebuild Like A Nerd series, my goal is to rebuild the default homes in a way that keeps them recognizable, but stays more true to the originally intended style, has a better layout and furnishing, and takes advantage of things like being able to use move objects and items added in updates and other packs.

I personally would like all the packs to see kind of the ideal/most options version of each style. Also, frankly, there’s plenty of ‘base game+1pack only’ builds, but fewer (to me) all packs that don’t use cc

Noted! I would also love to incorporate more packs for that reason, to get things as accurate as possible. I figure if there's enough demand for a base game version as well, I can just add it to the Build Like a Nerd tutorial series, where I do prioritize just the base game or very limited packs to get as good of an outcome as possible.

i love this! i love how you improved the house while keeping the overall vibe of it in tact. and imo, use whichever packs you feel like you may need, if it helps the houses look more like you want them to. the research and the time dedicated is enough to keep me engaged!

Using more packs seems to be the popular opinion, which is fantastic because while this home was pretty easily done staying within the base game, there are definitely others that would certainly benefit from introducing other pack content. I'm so excited to keep making these videos!

The Strangerville pack has such beautiful Victorian doors and windows that I really do think the pack is worth buying, especially for renovating Willow Creek builds with. I'd love to see the BFF Family redone since the "colonial" style referenced in the house description is not there at all. It just looks like a shotgun with an addition on the side. Those three townies also have such specific interests that it makes building for them fun.

Willow Creek is such a hot mess. Idk if you've seen the little Architecture Tours I've been uploading as shorts, but the "shotgun" homes in Willow Creek are always one of my main complaints! Also the strangerville world is one of the most requested world tours, so I'm already thinking about grabbing up that pack, although the build items are also a major draw. I love building Victorian styles.

@@sahm_and_bean I watch your shorts as well. It really is such a shame because shotguns are about impossible to mess up, and yet.... Plus New Orleans is such an inspiring area architecturally. I really wish they'd given us more bright colors in base game siding and even more colorful swatches on the shuttered windows to reflect the NOLA inspiration.

@@sahm_and_bean while I'm griping about dull exteriors, I was so over any more North American worlds but then excited when they announced Growing Together would have a Bay area inspired world. But it doesn't look like we're getting colorful sidings with that pack either. Why do a Bay Area inspired world without giving us BB to make the beautiful homes it's world famous for??? At least the craftsman windows and doors look nice.

I really liked this video and yes, I'll admit to actually watching it because I like your voice. I'm not a building nerd myself, but what I enjoy is that you'll explain what you and why instead of just speedbuilding your way through. So yes, I would love more home rebuilds (even though they take more than 9 hours! Did not expect that) whenever you have the time to build them. Also, despite only owning the base game, I don't mind if you want to use packs to help you in rebuilding these homes. Some of the packs have really nice things (they are just too expensive for me), but I wouldn't mind watching you go wild with your nerdiness to make the house the way the nerd in you would be pleased with. Last (but not least): Thank you for this video and for all the work you put in to make it. I'll look forward to the next one!

I just wanted to say thank you for your amazing tutorials. Your Like a Nerd series has helped me tremendously. I followed this tutorial (almost) exactly for a spa I was building on this lot. I wanted to keep the building's architectural aesthetic, but did turn it into a pink and green candy-colored monstrosity, and I love it! Thank you so much for helping me elevate my building.

Great build! I'm looking forward to this series. I think it would be nice to limit the packs to the basegame and the world you're building in so people who don't have all the packs can download your remodeled versions. Then if they have other packs that will work with the architectural style they can modify the builds further if they want to.

I think I'll definitely do a mix. Several styles, like the Tudor lots in Windenberg, wouldn't need more packs to be rebuilt in this way, but I think the Midcentury Modern mansion of the Landgraabs would benefit greatly from some items from Tiny Living, y'know?

That's why that bit of trim around the middle of the room is called a chair rail! We don't have one currently (renting) but it's going to be one of the first things I install when we're finally able to buy a house because it makes such a difference!! The rest of the paneling is kind of a bonus for extra protection and easier cleaning 😁

It looks so much better than the original! I'd say just go for it with the packs, since it will let you be as accurate as you can to the style, and it's really fascinating to see what parts of packs can be used well in styles other than the one they've been marketed as. Also, at some point, it'd be great to have a Build/Rebuild Like a Nerd video on cottage style houses and more rustic cabins / farmhouses!

Same! It is genuinely my goal to make videos that I want to watch, and I think I mentioned it in the video, but I very rarely see "rebuilds" that are actually rebuilds. They so often are just completely new homes, which is totally fine, and a lot of fun. I just take a different approach to things I guess 😅

The Landgraabs would also be really fun to renovate for because mid century mansion is a lot of fun. That build is so huge though, so I don't blame you if that's way down on the list. If you did do their property, I'd love to see a few packs incorporated, because furnishing large builds in just base game is so repetitive and punishing. There'll only be one or two options that sort of work with a style.

This is an amazing idea! I've started renovating the Landgraabs home in Oasis Springs, so can't wait to see your take on that. I've used a lot of elements from your videos on Art Deco. Handily, I have an old school behind my house that was built in the art deco style! I'm all for more packs = more fun. Especially high school years.

I like the idea of using more packs if you need to. It would show us which packs work together for specific architecture style. Maybe not use tons of packs at once but maybe up to 5 that are relevant.

Oh definitely. This one really didn't need any other packs (that I have: apparently Strangerville has some excellent Victorian items), but other build styles could greatly benefit from multiple packs.

I think this is the 5th or 6th time in the last 24 hours the strangerville pack has been recommended to me. I'm definitely moving that toward the top of the list for next time there's a sale!

Ooh, you don't have that one yet. It is fun to play with the town story line. Especially if you like fantasy or sci-fi stories. The builds are very bad though. But it comes with some of my favorite doors and windows. Very Victorian esk.

Hopefully I'm not too late but i think using packs in future builds would be good - if you limited it! Its really frustrating wanting to build a cool house but not having 40 different packs, so perhaps you could pick 1-3 packs that really benefit the style of whichever sim you're building for? It would also be interesting to see your takes on which packs and items suit which sims most!

Hello, just have to say that I absolutely adore this and the Build Like A Nerd series, I’m not knowledgeable about architecture and especially not American architecture since I’m Swedish, so most of the time I don’t even get what EA was trying to mimic with their buildings.

I’ve been trying to mess with the townies lives first then their houses because while I live watching build videos, I’m terrible at it and generally just enjoy downloading fixed versions. Also building takes forever while I have very little time to mess around 😂

@@sahm_and_bean You are so lucky in that regard, I live in Germany and have to wait until the late afternoon before we get the Up-Date😩 I love my Home country and don't really want to live anywhere else, but sometimes I wish there were another way to schedule Up-Dates than Eastern Time U.S.😞 More like it comes out whenever it is 9 a.m. at the computers Location or something similar.

@@sahm_and_bean Well no matter where you live most of your YT-Content is released when we in Germany have between 6p.m. or 7 p.m. i like to think that an up-date mist be authorized by a Human at a Computer and no matter what, that won't happen when the Person is not working, so maybe they start at 9 a.m. that means the up-date will come out around 6 p.m. for me.🤷🏻 But whatever, I am looking forward to your Video.

I’m so happy I found this channel, you’re so knowledgeable! I know not everyone agrees with me but I really appreciate that you limit the packs. It makes downloading and using them so much easier, since ts4 just automatically and kinda randomly replaces or excludes items if you don’t have required packs, and it’s really cool to see how good the builds could actually be with just what the pack comes with.

Welcome, and thank you! I think some builds will definitely be limited packs simply because they don't need more, but if I redo, say, the Landgraabs mansion I may bring in a couple other packs to help the MidMod style come through a little more strongly (and fill all that empty space).

Makes sense! I will probably do a mix, and prioritize only bringing in other packs if they would truly suit the style better. And if I ever do something with a lot of packs that the base game crowd wants a base game version of, I can always add it to the list of Build Like a Nerd tutorials, where I do really prioritize base game only wherever possible.
