The #SquatUclub is now on RU-vid! As soon as I upload a new video, "like" it and comment with the hashtag #SquatUclub ASAP. I'll pick amongst those who do so within 1 hour of the video going live and pick one winner to start working on whatever you need help with (squat technique, an achy hip, help with back pain during deadlifts, etc). You must be SUBSCRIBED to my RU-vid channel for a chance to win. Turning on notifications by clicking the little bell next to the SUBSCRIBE button on my channel will make sure you can be first in line to win every time! I’ll reply under the winners comment - so make sure you keep up on your notifications!

I paid a hundred dollars to get an evaluation and, compared to this, I was absolutely robbed. This is exactly what I was looking for. Everybody at the clinic seemed confused that I wanted to come in to evaluate my asymmetries and deficiencies in my mobility and movement as a pre-emptive measure. They had no idea what I was looking for and I left the clinic feeling like I didn't get anywhere close to my money's worth. Thank you Squat University, from the bottom of my heart. The information you selflessly give to the public for free is invaluable.

@crabhat1 Good explanation. I have visit nurses of different kinds and once a doctor because of other problems that I think is coming and I want to prevent them the best way. But they are confused when I say "I got a little pain here when I train bench and tried different technics and stuff but it only get better when I don't bench at all" (But I would like to try to compete in powerlifting) and it ends up I get the tip to just not train bench...

Strongmen have a lot of difficult competition with awkward to grip objects and weird movements, so they are always more flexible than they look. Every bit of extra flexibility can save a ton of effort. And Martins certainly is one of the best at that - not quite as heavy as some of the other elite guys but extremely good in more mobile competitions.

There is so much here to absorb... I hope they take it to a Prof. It would make a great tool to review. One recommendation... never tell a WSM to go "as far as you can" against a band or other equipment... chances are it will be beyond what the bands can handle! lol. Do you find it better/easier to work with someone as well educated and aware of their body and injuries like Martins is or is it more challenging? Thanks again for this!
@alexgelinski3464
@alexgelinski3464 4 года назад
28:16 the reason it hurts when he passively externally rotates his hip is because it is lengthening a chronically tight TFL muscle which is tightening his ITB which pulls on his patella which causes friction against the patellar groove ie patellofemoral pain which is also why he complains of "cracking" in his knee (friction of the uneven surface of the patella against patellar groove). When done actively it reduces TFL tightness via reciprocal inhibition with use of external rotators. If you notice in his squat 3:23 he actually starts out by shifting to his strong right side BUT because he is an athlete, and we know as physical therapists that athletes are masters of compensation, his TFL pulls him over to the left - his left knee becomes more midline with the body and he becomes more "balanced". It is a pseudo balance however, because he is still technically providing most of the power via his right side. Even looking at his neck position - at 0:58 his neck doesn't move, he has no ability to shift over to his left side without compensating. I would honestly be very surprised if squat university can treat Martins with traditional PT. He may get better but it will never be 100% until he learns to shift to his left without kicking in TFL, psoas, lats, and neck. I guarantee you we will be seeing another video in the future of Martins at another PT, chiro whatever in future. Additionally, although I am not too familiar with Martins career, it would not surprise me if he had some sort of fall or head trauma in recent years which kicked all of this off. 41:50 sorry I just had to make this observation. Look at how he shifts from side to side. He is NEVER on his left heel. He shifts from his right heel over to his left toes. He needs to be able to get BACK into his left hip, on his left heel in order to activate his posterior chain on the left and get OFF his right side. Being too much on the right side is why he has right hamstring and adductor issues - THEY ARE BEING OVERUSED ie tendinopathy. I really love how traditional PT can identify these issues but have no idea why they are happening and really what to do about them. If I were to devise a treatment plan for Martins I would give him left posterior capsule inhibition, right glute max program, left adductor program, left hamstring program and left ab wall program. Right glute max to push him over to the left side, left adductor, left ab wall, left hamstring to keep him there without having to activate his TFL and psoas. Btw I can also guess what you guys are going to find in his UE evaluation. Tight latissimus (R>L), bicipital tendinitis R, decreased IR ROM R shoulder. Probably also a weak low trap on the left.

One comment, I feel sometimes with test re-test the PT is creating expectation and creating bias in the response of the patient. Notice at 38:45 Aaron asks Martins if the pain is less and Martins says less, but sounds somewhat unsure, and Aaron reinforces so that’s ‘much less’. I don’t think it was intentional but important not to become complacent

I found this video really helpful as I also have a minor enough meniscal tear to warrant the surgeon not doing surgery. Interesting tidbit: apparently surgeons have to get approval from the board to do a surgery. Quick question for you: When I squat, what happens is that my left hip joint will loudly pop when I get to around a 90 degree angle with my legs or lower. It doesn't hurt and I've actively been able to pop both hips while sitting since I was a teen (I'm 44 now). I believe I have undiagnosed hip impingement because when I was doing muay thai, I would feel strong hip pain (like the ball was scraping against the socket - which was a stabbing/burning sensation) when I'd throw a round kick at/above hip level. With all that being said, is the left hip popping sound - or rather the cause of it - something I need to worry about?

For sure. He won the squat event at World’s Strongest Man 2019, 750 pounds for 9 reps. Lots of flexibility for a big guy. Just nagging injuries and pain throwing him slightly off

I "blew out my knee" badly injuring and partially tearing 3 of the ligaments (ACL, PCL and MCL) and they put me on a good physio program and its stronger than ever, glad I didnt go under the knife.
