Fixing up my Sierra Sapphire - Replacing the Front Suspension 

Holy SHIT!!! A female run diy mechanical channel where the mechanic doesn't look like she's dressed for the club and doesn't somehow magically get through an entire car build with pristine hands!!! Good for you! Big thumbs up!

Nice to see an old Sierra being kept alive, they are quite a rare sight these days. Back in the 80s, I got summer job as a driver for a rustproofing company. The very first car that I had to deliver was a new Sierra 1.6 Ghia. It seemed so quiet, compared to my Mk1 Escort.

In 2000 I drove a red 1.8 LX sapphire as a taxi for a few years, and other sierras. I’ll never tire of the sound of the 1.8, even if it took ages for the blue smoke to clear on the wet winter mornings! Our fleet bought diesel mondeos to replace the sierras, big mistake! The sierras soldiered on, and the mondeos went for scrap. My favourite Sierra on the fleet was a white 1.6 azura hatchback . It was slightly underpowered and thirsty but my baby daughter who was a toddler at the time, loved going to work with me in it, I think she liked the interior. Great video, nice to see younger folks getting involved in older vehicles, keep up the good work

Every time I see someone working on a car with rust like this it makes me appreciate living in a place where rust isn't much of an issue :)

I take my hat off to you. My daughter was about to go out all dressed up and nails done. She came in and told me she had a puncture in her Outlander. So I gave her the trolley jack and rattle gun. Yay she did it. Girls can do it for themselves and here in Australia a long way from anywhere it's essential.

When i was your age pre internet i took my 1.6 L sierra to kwick Fit for the same job , never thinking i could do this myself its only after reading haynes manuls and watching Edd china actully that gave me the confidence to learn these things for myself . good on you .

I so love a girl who rolls her sleeves up overhauls tied off at the waist dirty hands getting stuck in showing the bits that are not easy even for strong men! And she's RED with some art work to view, WOW!!!! gets my vote all day long............

I had a H reg 1.8LX sierra hatch as a company car - did well over 130,000 miles in 3 years and it was a blast to drive, and my first rear wheel drive car - nice to see a Sierra again and good luck with the repairs and maintenance

Hi Beth really good work there - more than likely that the lower suspension arm bushes are the culprit for the juddering - used to do a lot in the past ! Keep up the good work 👍

Brilliant my dad had about 4 sierras and ran his own mechanics shop in the sticks love it when I see the work going into a proper motor and love to see the correct tools used to compress the spring seen some people do that in the worst way not to mention how dangerous that can be and to talk about making sure the tracking is on point is essential couldn't be happier with your work I will sub and watch more soon thank you reminds me of better times.

Beth, you've done a good job there. I've had 5 Sierras the last one being a 1989 Sapphire 1.8LX (G580 FVH) which had the CVH engine that used more oil than petrol! This suspension job reminded me of the time I hit a kerb in Sierra No. 1 (C496 RAL, a 1986 1.6GL hatchback) and bent the lower front suspension arm. I had my tools in the boot so I went to a breaker, bought the part I needed, did a roadside repair and I was mobile once again. The front ARB doubles up as a tie bar so no drop links to worry about. A first I thought the juddering could be warped discs. I reckon that the front wheels will need balancing. The front wheel alignment will definitely need doing with those now track rod ends. Don't forget to check the condition of the bushes where the front ARB bolts to the lower suspension arm. Once you've done these jobs it should improve the front end even more. Keep up the good work. I'd have another Sierra in a heartbeat if I had the space.

Simple thing like wheel balancing could be off, flat spot on the tyre because of driving on worn out struts, warped or damaged wheel rim, warped discs, (shudder only happens during braking), worn out bushings on stabilizer bars and top and bottom suspension arms. Good to see a young person working on cars 👍👌😎

Lovely to see the women getting stuck into fixing cars! When I started my apprenticeship in the late 60's there were two other girls on the course too but generally there were not so many around until more recent times. Some parts of the job can be challenging and do require some good muscles at times. The Sierra is a great car to have and you make this particular job look so easy. I can see you are making a great quality job of it too, some mechanics don't bother but a spot of grease on the nuts and bolts always make it easier to work on next time!

When removing calipers , push the pad across to push the piston back in a little to allow it to come off , especially if there is a lip on the disc

Greetings from the USA. Been a mechanic for decades, on and off. So I think I can say, excellent job! Your work is measured and shows confidence. Hardly a wasted move, no fumbling about. Very good and I enjoyed watching your work.Try not to bang up those pretty knuckles too much. One slip of the wrench and ouch! One suggestion. When tightening a nut or bolt, using the open end of a wrench can offer more speed to tighten them. Then finish off tightening with the closed end. Loosening would be just the reverse. Break the nut or bolt free with the closed end, then use the open end to quickly loosen. In any case, liked the vid. and all the best to you.

Nice to see a Sierra being kept on the road! I had a 2 litre twin cam back in the day, it also had a steering wheel shake, turned out that a front tyre had thrown a weight and was out of balance. It could also be wheel bearings, worn front suspension bushings, warped hubs etc.....

An enjoyable video as always. My wife used to have a Sierra. It was a '90 on a G, with the 2.0 pinto. It had dohc, but was on a Carb. Buying parts for it was a nightmare, as according to Ford all dohc engines were fuel injection. The number of parts chaps I had to take to the car before they believed me was incredible. The worst problem I had was trying to get a radiator hose for it. Turns out the top hose was from a Granada! In the end it sucked a bird into the intake and died.

I seriously cannot remember the last time I saw a Sapphire on the road! I wanted to buy one back in 2000 when even the youngest one was 7 years old and they were all smokers I saw back then with oil and water leaking out of literally every engine joint. I bought the Haynes manual for both the 4 pots and the V6 to read up on them. It's rear wheel drive and it's a Ford that means cool car. Well done for keeping it going!

Hi, Check your anti roll bar to track control arm bushes as these will cause your steering wheel to shudder especially under braking.

One of my first cars was a Sierra hatch 1.6L One dark rainy night in Scotland, a hairpin bend appeared from nowhere, and we went off the road into some trees (took a sign post down too). Still managed to drive home. Great solid car. Great video, keep em coming!

I am so happy to find this, I wanted my daughter to see that girls can do other things than be "dollies". My sisters during 82/92 era, knew their way around Cortinas my IV and V, Capris and escorts. Thanks. (Wheel shake during breaking could be damaged disc......try it in reverse....if no vibration...not disc)

Thanks, Beth. I had one of these new in 1988 :-) I also had one second hand in the 2000's with a wobbly wheel like yours. Mine turned out to be the anti roll bar bushes at the front of the antiroll bar. We needed two of us to get the anti roll bar back on as it needs compressing to fit back in the new bushes. Great channel, keep up the good work!

I came across your channel by accident, so awesome to see you doing a thorough repair. I have a 91 sierra sapphire and its undergoing cylinder head work as the cam belt let go but hopefully soon its going to be on the road soon. Brilliant video and I love old cars as at least you can work on them and get classic car insurance ;). You keep up the good work !!!!!!

I didn't mind the Sierra. It got a bad rap because it was the car which replaced the Cortina, and because in 1982 there was simply nothing else like it on the road... I remember growing up as a kid in the late 90's our local taxi firm Simon's Cabs ran a fleet of Sierra Sapphires. Every week me and Mum would get a cab back home after shopping, so this car ended up becoming pretty familiar with us. They ran them for years, until they went bust. Sadly most of these are now scrapped...haven't seen a Sierra of any type on the road in years. So well done on trying to keep this one going. 👍

Thats a clean sierra for its age some great work you are doing one small thing and please listen i never always try and use a kneeling mat a nice thick one ive been around cars for decades and my knees are shot from kneeling on hard floors my old boss when i was 17 said i would regret not using one and i did i do now but too late keep up the good work its so refreshing to see younger women getting involed in cars its a rewarding job

This brings back memories! I had more or less the same car, identical colour, only difference was mine was a 2.0 pinto. One of the best engines ever! I'm disabled with a bad back now so I can't do so much car DIY......but I have a Mondeo v6 estate on the drive, a mark 2 which I work on when I can. Hang on to that car, barely any left....it is an investment! Really easy to work on as well; very best wishes! 😊
