I was given a bag of Nintendo Game Boy Micro parts, with no idea as to their condition. Can I cobble together any working consoles?

14:23 More than direct water damage, looks like this gameboy was used near or around the sea. Environment highly saline water breeze can eat electronics without triggering the water indicator seals just like that...

Your theory is certainly consistent but having seen one to many Rossmann videos I just assume moisture sensors give both false positives and negatives and are mostly there for the manufacturer to deny warranty.

Nintendo doesn't use Philips screws internally, they use JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screws, which look similar but are not the same profile, and can be damaged if you try to use a Philips driver on them.
@Ro0ops
@Ro0ops 3 года назад
Oh yeah, first time you try a genuine JIS driver it's a REVELATION! Chewed out screw heads become a thing of the past. Almost all Japanese manufacturers use JIS and almost none of them use Philips. Anyone doing this type of repair should do themselves a favor and order a set of JIS drivers online, they are hard to find outside Japan.

One tip for sometimes getting stripped screws out, is press a rubber band between the screwdriver and screw. That sometimes can help it get enough grip to do it. And I don't know why you take on other peoples projects.... bwa ha ha ha ha. (btw, I never tried working on those, that is how I got them hehe)
@acumenium8157
@acumenium8157 3 года назад
Good advice but some screws just suck. My laptop came with horribly stripped screws that even the rubber band method can't remove. So I have a time bomb, damn heatsink can't be repasted and the fans can't be cleaned.
@LordMegatherium
@LordMegatherium 3 года назад
Too add on to that: I've found Torx (both without and with rubber band) to get a way better grip than any other bit,
@firasbajjar
@firasbajjar 3 года назад
@@acumenium8157 This actually happened to me in my laptop and it turns out there was loctite in the screws that needed to be heated REALLY well (the screw has to literally burn you when you touch it) in order for the screw to even move a bit, after heating the stripped philips screw quite a bit i was able to remove it with a flathead, flatheads grip really well on stripped philips.
@acumenium8157
@acumenium8157 3 года назад
@@firasbajjar I can't help but wonder if loctite or something similar was used as well, but the screws are stripped too. The metal is WAY too soft. I made one of the screws (that doesn't remove anyway) worse than it was, but it doesn't really matter since it never turned to begin with. If a screwdriver is warping the shape of a hole it fits in, the screw (which is a BIG screw, it's a heatsink one!) shouldn't be so malleable. One of the screws, the worst one right now, came pre-stripped with, instead of a plus/+ shape (Phillips?), it's more like a ding-dong. -D Phillips "fits", but won't turn, and will instead eat away at the really soft metal of the screw. I fear a flat-head would be much the same.
@firasbajjar
@firasbajjar 3 года назад
@@acumenium8157 Yep that’s exactly what happened with my laptop. Like all i did was apply a small force only to end up with fine metal dust on my hand. I also encountered the same problem when disassembling a friend’s laptop where the heatsink screws were seriously stuck with loctite that i had to heat the thing for 10 mins. Flat head should work really well in terms of grip provided that you have the correct size that slots well into one of the philips’s cross lines. This is what i found working after months agonizing how the heck im gonna open mine, a lot of heat and a good flathead.

@thepibbster1130
@thepibbster1130 3 года назад
I would doubt it. They'd either have to make the entire faceplate out of glass, or find some way to bond the glass lens to the plastic faceplate. Then again, you could also keep the lens permanent above the screen, and make a cutout in the plastic faceplate so that the glass would fit in. But that would also stop compatibility with other faceplates that aren't modified.

I find if you have a screw that's "chowdered" as you put it. Lol it's worth trying to use an interface like a rubber band on the tip of your screwdriver. It fills what is left of the screw head and if it's not in to tight gives enough grip to unscrew them without needing to drill.

instead of drilling out screws, if you can get ANY grip whatsoever, you can use a wide rubber band between the screwdriver and screwhead in order to get a better bite. - OR depending on how large the screws are, you can use a very small dremmel cutting wheel (or a jeweler's saw) to cut a tiny channel in the screw head and use a flat head screwdriver to unscrew them.

@@kaitlyn__L If you get one the original EZ-Flash omega (not the new "definitive edition" version) is pretty good, I've had mine for a couple years and it still works perfectly, the only data that it has corrupted is my pokemon sapphire save but that might be a problem with the ROM I have, it has emulators for the NES and Gameboy/Gameboy color built into the firmware so they don't need to be downloaded, it can take a 128GB micro SD card (mine has a 32GB microSD that I got for $20 at wallgrens with a couple hundred games and a few GBA video ROMs on it and it's only using about 700MB of space) and there's a replacement shell for it that should come in the box (if you get a brand new one like I did) to put it into a DS lite without the top part being outside the cartridge slot.
