What can be a worse nightmare than repairing something that someone else tried (and failed) to fix, causing even more problems in the process. Let's fix the 2nd nixie multimeter - the one full of botches and modifications. This is M1T-242 made by Metra Blansko in Czechoslovakia in 1986.

He has more passive components than any one person can ever use. It's all high end stuff too. He should offload a few thousand of his nixies and other tubes and buy a house in the country haha. Prague sounds swanky but tourists get taken for every cent they bring daily haha. I'd like to know how much prusa charges for printers there, considering that's where they're made.

@@jstro-hobbytech I just looked it up, fully assembled Prusa Mk4 (the first one it suggested to me) costs on their page $1254 including VAT, $1036 without VAT. Mk3s in kit version costs $761 with VAT and $629 without VAT.

@@snap_oversteer wow. You'd think there'd be a local discount. I can't stand how he puts his name on every part on the printer. It's very egotistical. I hear he doesn't pay very well if you work for him. He sells 2000 printers a month as well. Not to mention all the filament. I love capitalism but hate the greed. There's no such thing as infinite growth.

I already knew you were also fixing this one because you were making the reed relay. And anyway you could never just leave it there all bodged and 'tuned'. Only needed an extra spoiler and blue LEDs underneath so really nobody else would like it 😅 Nice job!

Theres few things worse than trying to repair something someone else has played around with 🙈... that auto- ranging is really fast, it's not a big deal when you are measuring the odd component, but when you are trouble shooting it can be really annoying waiting for the verdict from a slow DMM. Good work mate...

It's fascinating how nixie tubes are really responsive and how the number s and decimals change unlike modern multimeters has some delay on it

It depends on liquide crystals delay on modern "epaper" displays. Plus is minimal consumption only for change status of display, maybe in uA. Plus backlight of course. Nixie tube? My ebook reader have refresh rate on videos around 2-3Hz.

Nothing to do with the display technology and everything to do with the analogue to digital converter and auto range circuitry. Handheld digital multimeters have a wide variation in their speed of updating the displayed value and in how fast the auto range circuitry operates. The lower cost multimeters tending to be rather slow at auto-ranging.

@@Mark1024MAK you could say that, the thing that fascinate its how a old device made from descrete components it's how able to beat a modern one on fast meter can show the number but the down side how ever is bulky and has limited voltage, current & resistance range, but in terms of convinience a modern multimeter will be my bet

Great video. I agree with others about slow DMMs during diagnosis. The worst meter I ever owned was from Radio Shack. It was not just slow but if you where looking for a voltage it would not lock on a make a reading at all if the voltage was fluctuating. It just sat at zero. My test bench was greatly improved when i dropped it in the trash.

It is remarkable how it was (probably) cheaper for them to use multiple discrete transistors, with several grams of aluminium in them, and maybe even some gold, instead of one more decoder-latch group, to control the plus-minus and 0123 nixies - never mind just packing everything into a single big IC.

I think it's for Nixie tube current. From many IC's You can take max. 20mA or simillar current.

@@brucepickess8097 aluminium for case of transistors. And gold for contacts to semiconductor plate with transistor. There are many KC 507, KC 509 from 80'. Use Google for manual for device M1T242A.pdf And somewhere else on the net for transistors on stock: "Silicon transistor KC507 Tesla, designed for usage in input circuits of low frequency amplifiers. Specification: NPN, 45V, 0,1A, 0,3W, TO-18, gold plated leads. New old stock items, directly from the factory packing. Year of production: 1981"

@@LMB222 The cheap stuff is built to a price. I tried to measure the voltage of a 75AH battery with a $10 DMM and it literally melted the probe wires. Same with my $100 basic Fluke, no problem at all.

​@@bucinsk10 dollar meters do that because they have a few strands of thin copper and not proper gauged wires just buy some more expensive meters but they never are as fast as the older ones

It's more likely he removed it because it was faulty, but didn't find a suitable replacement. I think so because he drew the dotted lines on the circuitboard, marking where the coils are connected. These are signs he was testing the relays and trying to identify the bad one.

Nice repairs and really fast auto-ranging. Modern auto-ranging meters tend to be painfully slow and I've found it unfortunate that fewer and fewer high-quality manual ranging meters are available; everyone demands auto-ranging, but I've always like manual ranging for many applications where the range is predictable and I want results to appear before a probe slips or something. The accuracy of these old, analog meters is impressive *and* they aren't offering fake resolution like modern budget meters. You can get incredible features from cheap, Chinese meters today, but most offer far more counts than are actually significant. If the meter is not accurate down to 0.0001V then why do we want it to show us the non-significant digit? When I see 10,000 counts, I never know how much to round the result as even the specifications are unreliable. Fake resolution is a form of misinformation ;).

I have a Brymen with 500000 counts and a tolerance of 0.03%. These two values doesnt fit together, do they... For me it makes sense to see small variations/drift in some designs wich is not related to the tolerance of the meter. So there are situations where resolution is needed or helpful but the exact value isnt.

If I were running any sort of production or diagnostic line or shop where you had to measure values repeatedly, I'd take the old meter over the new any day of the week. That several second delay would be intolerable.

Your cat comment reminded me an video where a guy used super high tech, involving microcontroller programming, to crack the password of one device where the customer had a lot of bitcoin and forgot the password. Somewhere in the process the technician was commenting with the customer that he was no understanding the measures variations. And it was just because he forgot to connect the ground 😂. I commented that it was like an F1 pilot to forget to accelerate. Lol

You should clean the circuit board with warm water and soap, and then let it dry So you can remove any fragments and dust on circuitry.

It is good that you now have two identical multimeters. This way, you can trial their readings by using both of them for one measurement, making sure that they didn't drifted too far or use them to measure voltage and current at the same time. Kinda neat. I wish I had the opportunity to own two multimeters too.

There are some people out there who have no respect for history, and don't care what they wreck with their lack of knowledge and brutish dabbling. I can only wish that whoever "fixed" this iconic Nixie device could be watching your video, but not much chance. Those sorts of people are rarely interested in learning anything new. Everything the get their hands on is just another toy to be wrecked and dumped. :'(

What is your secret for fixing TTL electronics without apparent ESD protection?

TTL is even less sensitive to ESD than CMOS. And I have never damaged any CMOS by touching it either. The only thing that really requires ESD protection is probably laser diodes. Maybe some J-FETs, but only when outside of a board.

​@@DiodeGoneWild I have seen TTL chips (and even discrete BJTs) die from ESD. If you wear anything except cotton or don't store them properly it is surprisingly easy to kill (at least some modern) semiconductors unless you have protection. Although it is more common for high power or high feature density ICs, things most hobbyists and also many professionals will never encounter.

@@tuxrandom I doubt that TTL (7400 family) ICs are still produced; maybe only in Russia, but in real world, S, LS, AS and ALS are the only TTL families that are produced. Also, there are the CMOS variants HC, HCT, etc that are usual to find and those are indeed sensible to ESD. But the 7400 TTL are quite unaffected by ESD and those are used in this multimeter. Note that in 70s-80s, in the communist eastern Europe, only standard TTL (7400), high speed TTL (74H) and low power (74LS) were produced, and that is what is used here.
