I actually use a DA with meguiars m205 on a microfibre pad. Ive done it on a lot of old used cars I've detailed and it is easily the quickest and least effort way of getting this off for me. Yes it is a pain to remove. So for that i use Optimum no rinse. So i buff it off first with a dry microfibre. Then rub the residue off with a damp mitt soaked in ONR followed up by regular glass cleaner. Cleanest glass you'll get. If anyone has any suggestions why i shouldnt do this then let me know but ive not seen any negative results so far and takes so much pain out of it. Also great from removing failed glass sealants such as gtechnic g1. Thats how i found this technique. No glass polish was shifting it even with one of those glass pads on the da. So resorted to m205.

What is the cause for this glass scum/etching? I only use a winter washer fluid that can be as low as -60C. Sometimes I wash the car with car shampoo including on the windscreen. I applied a wax/polish on the winshield about 1 year ago and it makes water beading and slide easily but after a while it cause skipping on the wiper. I wipe it off with isopropanol 99% and the squeaking are gone but now I have this exact scum that cannot be removed with Isopropanol or even Brake Cleaner. I removed it using Stove Glass cleaner that has some powdery substant that I usually use for my kitchen.

Thanks man I'm gona try this . My god I have tried so many things until now , I cleaned my wipers with alcohol , I have spent so much money on windshield cleaners , I have used clay bar many times but this haze never went away . This is exactly what I posted about on a detailing channel, the other day. Now I know what it is. I thought I messed up the glass using a cutting polish and an orange pad. It was actually just the polish flashing on the glass, and let me tell you, that stuff, would not come off. I had to get a real claybar, and not some synthetic bs. Real actual clay, to finally get it out. But I see this works, as well. 👌👌👌

Sonax has a nice hand polisher tool called the P-Ball, which imo works a lot better also for glass polishes than regular microfiber towels or blocks. It's a lot stiffer, fits perfectly into your hand/palm, and keeps the polish on the glass instead of "swallowing" it like microfiber does.

Great video! Provided me with the inspiration to tackle the terrible visibility issue with my glass! I cleaned my glass earlier using Autoglym glass polish and a magic eraser sponge. I used Megs glass cleaner (liquid spray) first and it didn’t budge it one bit, but it obviously removed any dust and light contamination on the glass. I had to wet the eraser sponge first and squeeze out most of the water. This provided more lubrication when applying the polish (liberally) to the glass, it also prevented the sponge from sucking up the polish. With plenty of firm pressure and elbow grease, I could visibly see the staining marks being rubbed away. Circular motions seemed to be most effective on this attempt. It took plenty of effort and patience to shift it all. It certainly wasn’t a quick process. That may be due to the fact that I’ve never polished the glass in the 10 years of owning my car! I ended up using the same method on the inside of the windscreen with the same success. I placed a large sheet over the dashboard first though as the Autoglym glass polish is particularly dusty! I’m not sure how long the cleanliness will last, but with the prolonged hours of darkness on the way - I will likely make this a regular job, just to keep on top of it and make the task that little easier.

less detergents now when you wash the car and avoid using spray and rinse sealant products on the glass. also make sure you dont have your screen wash over concentrated. hope this helps.

Great advice, thank you. I was considering applying Angelwax H2GO but I’m on the fence with that one really. Like you say, maybe these sealants have the counter effect of leaving this bonded residue as they become less effective over time.

pantfoot, that does help actually I use megs plus on a a sponge sometimes on the glass during the wash and like I dont need to do a dedicated glass clean typically during a normal wash if I do that.. If you have it under control and dont have like a build up. megs+ will help it. but it wont rip off the real extreme crap like I had because. This needed a solvent based polish and some serious grunt.
@Pantfoot
@Pantfoot 5 лет назад
You're absolutely right. I meant I use it more as a maintenance product to avoid that kind of buildup. Sorry that I wasn't more clear on that. For that kind of build up, I use a cerium oxide polish and a DA, then use Megs + to maintain for my clients.

Dad has a 2013 Nissan Altima. Drove my Mom an him to the airport at 4:30 am and though we were going to die, couldn't see anything. When that scum when the window gets wet and car light and street lights you can't see anything. I tried so many things to get it off. Bar keepers friend, magic eraser, glass stove top cleaner. Tried by hand then with a foam pad attached to a drill. Nothing worked. What finally worked for me was Meguair's Ultimate Compound and the foam pad attached to a drill. Small sections, couple passes and whatever was it was came off. Night and day difference. Not sure what this was, old rainx, scum, acid rain, whatever. Very happy it came off. It was dangerous to drive whenever the window got wet (rain, morning dew, etc). Now the are crystal clear. Had to do the front windshield and all door windows. The rear window was fine for some reason.

Very good video on deep cleaning the windows upon some research what you are trying to remove I believe its called as traffic film grime so deep nothing will get it off besides glass polish. I always wondered why during night drives I tend to notice them from lamppost lights as they reflect off the glass, especially on cold nights as you demist the glass just before it fully clears up they show up pretty well but as the front glass becomes warmer from the front demisters the traffic film becomes more opaque.

@johnwalters878 5 лет назад
Yes, 000 or 0000 is great. Be careful with some of the softer glass, like GM or Ford. Keep with 0000. But I want to make a point that when using any steel wool it leaves tiny bits of steel behind that can fly around and get on the paint and then instill scratches if agitated on the paint. Also worth noting is don’t use the towels on the paint that you contaminated with the steel wool. Personally I’d throw them away or treat them like you would a ceramic coating towel.
@platinumautoglasswindowtin88

M205 is likely good, I was going to suggest it as well. I do like to follow up with a water repellent like Aquapel or Rain-X though they do add their own set of issues.

I wish I had looked at your post and advice before I ripped at my glass with blue rules polish and blue pad- swirly glass all over now which surprised me as others had said glass so hard it wouldn't mark with compound - defo does. Ideas to remove swirls? GP pro someone said?

paul smith You’re saying you scratched your glass? Just use a finer polish and finer pad. You should be able to bring it back, no problems.

roguegeek thanks rogue but I have tried yellow / yellow rupes combo but not removing it. I will try again later, maybe buy some glass polish.

I think it also partly due to synthetic oils floating about in the air on motorways etc. Not even standard thinners will move some of this stuff.

Normal pink bottle windoline, rub in in, let it set, polish off. Will shift any crud/hard water stains etc

I am going to do a car pro ceriglass polish on all my glass tomorrow. Going to use the 3 inch rayon pads on my shinemate as the glass on my A3 was left ruined by previous owner. Finishing off with car pro flyby forte and a fresh set of wiper blades 😁. Just wondering would you recommend cleaning out the wiper fluid reservoir with a mild APC solution or mild vinegar in distilled water beforehand? Have no idea what may have been put in there over years 🙈🙈

I have used this AGP for years and love how well it cleans glass, and really rate it. But what really caught my eye was the transparent bucket on the shelf i have tried tracking them down for a while with no success, where can i get these please John?

Nice video as usual! I had the same issue with ALL of the glass on a car. I think it might have been caused by the wax chemicals from a touchless car wash. No doubt it's best done by hand as opposed to a polisher as you said you can get to the edges and corners much better. I wasn't able to get Autoglym so I used another product, a discontinued product that worked very well. I'm so glad that film mess is gone as it was driving me batty and it was a safety issue. Invisible Glass (Stoner products) does NOT recommend driving with a stripped windshield, they recommend you then coat it. What do you think? I don't understand that as I don't believe it's coated from the factory? If you would recommend a coating what would you use? Thank you!

A always thought that white greasy film was mainly form the grit used on our roads. On trip on a motorway when it's cold, you get covered with this gunk. And it just streeks around and shows when it rains. If it raimkg heave you don't see it much, but light rain is a bitch. Good tip thought. I've never considered a glass polish. I usally upset use a household window spary. I current have the pound land stuff. I may get some polish for the easter clean. All the roads are usally clean by then.

Another great informative vid, thank you. I think glass polish is actually often forgotten about with its abrasive qualities, I certainly forgot to try this so good refresher. Would it remove the proper soiled in water marks also? I have some windows with bedded in water spots and was told to try cilit bang to remove, any recommendations?

I'm having rather a lot of trouble with this and getting a perfectly clean bit of glass. I'm using a microfibre rectangle applicator from rag company but it doesn't give me enough pressure or bite, its too soft. Are those hex pads more dense so I can rub the polish in harder (and where do you get yours from)? The glass polish removes some but there are some areas that seem to have that scum left on it.

You can also use this with a DA and a Rayon pad.
