How to easily change the oil on a 2010-2017 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The change interval is 10,000 miles per Toyota but I would change it well before that. To reset the FJ Cruiser maintenance light you simply hold down the odometer button with the vehicle off and then put the vehicle in ignition mode and watch it count down the dashes until they're gone.
Tools and materials:
-3/8 socket wrench and short to medium extension
-14mm socket for drain plug
-12mm socket for skid plate and oil drain plug cover
Oil filter Toyota part number 04152-YZZA5 or DENSO 150-3020, Fram CH10158, Fram TG10158
- Oil type and amount: 6.4 quarts of 0w20 full synthetic oil
- Toyota Oil filter housing tool/wrench, look for one that is 64.5mm x 14 Flutes
- funnel
- helpful materials: shop rags or paper towels, latex gloves, something to lay on, and a small empty cardboard box

On my 2013 FJ, there is a clip on the oil filter housing that needs to be removed before removing the housing.

@@SwimmingintheDeep It's actually a safety device to keep you from over tightening the housing. It often gets left off.

Thank you for the detailed video. I just spent $160 on my synthetic oil change for the 2011 fj cruiser, and I by no means want to pay that every time with how much I’m driving.

Thanks! The funny thing is, I refer to my own video as well before each oil change. Especially for the tool socket sizes. Keep that FJ going and maybe I'll wave to you on the road someday.

Well Jason? Just to add to your opinion I decided that I'm not going to take my FJ to have the oil changed at my local stealership. And this hasn't happened just once or twice but everytime I take my vehicle in for an oil change. You make an appointment at say 10:00 and I'm not out of there till way past 12:30. Overbooking? Not my problem anymore. I evaluated my circumstance this way. It take me over 40 minutes to get to the stealership they make me wait an hour and a half before they start on my vehicle and stick me with an oil change bill over $120 and I've got another 40 minute drive home. I just bought the oil filter for $14, and at the time I paid about $30 for 0-20 weight oil so $44 later and only 30 minutes no travel time and I am for certain that fully synthetic 0-20 is going into my FJ. I'm changing my own oil because the stealerships don't care about my time. Whatever time it takes me to setup is way shorter than the trip and the actual time start to finish is nothing compared to the stealership ordeal. Thanks for putting this up its been awhile so a quick refresher was necessary in my case.

That's funny That's how I feel about it really it just is a time saver and I know it's done right. It's also funny that I disclosed my name and I never really do that on my channe, also very rarely show my face, because I think it should be about fixing stuff and not looking at my ugly mug :-). My day job is doing technical videos and stuff like that in my face is on enough of those. Thanks for noticing and I hope it helped. FJ's forever.

The amazon basics oil passed the viscosity test over many of the leading manufacturers. It's all I used after watching it slaughter the top brands in most categories.

I would just add, if you keep your funnel in your garage, wash it out before using it to fill engine oil. It will collect some nasty stuff over time.

They are ready to strip too so use hand tools only. I had to upsize one of mine after I stripped it.

Removing the small plug drained practically no oil from the housing. Probably better off just removing the whole thing and not even bothering.

Your filter will come with a plastic release tube that you can insert after you remove the small plug cap. Of course it's usually messy too and you can skip straight to the mess as you say. Thanks for the comment!

I haven’t changed my oil in such a long time. Back then we would take the old oil to a gas station to dump. Where do you go to get rid of that old oil?

A lot of places that sell oil will take your recycled oil for free. Walmart, any of them with an automotive center, will take your oil.

The big-chain auto parts stores accept used oil. just call first as I have showed up and their tank was full so that one time they couldn't accept any.
