I'm old school and for those of us that are, we have a hard time letting go of the wheel, wink wink! That said I can see the advantages for row crops and hay mowing in level unobstructed fields. Around here we have a lot of trees, hill and hollows that are pretty tall and low, so I think that would be a problem. I do like the concept and the explanation of how to install and instruction to activate and set up the system was thorough. Some really cool aerial shots and a nice presentation as always, Mike. Thanks for sharing and have a great day and a great weekend!

Have used john deeres greenstar system and aftermarket systems here in the UK in small (rarely over 15-20 acre fields) very hill in the dales areas around me full of rocks and trees with no problems at all. It's all about how you use the system found it invaluable with pumping slurry with a umbilical system dragging pipes. It dose take some getting used to but after you learn it it's hard to go back. I wouldn't be without auto steer on at least one tractor now

So you got a quote from the JD dealer and said "nah, I'll do it myself". Lol, I work in the business for a competitor and customers are always glad when they do it themselves and then call us for tech support trouble shooting. Good video

In 2012 I bought a used Ez-steer for planting annual forage crops intended for cattle feed. I quickly found more and more applications of the technology including tracking where I fed cattle in the winter with my bale processor. I was able to get uniform manure distribution by feeding in an organized way even when snow made it impossible to see where I fed the day before. With rtk you will be able to lay out fence lines laser straight (though you will still want to use a surveyor for property boundaries) the possibilities are many.

@@OurWyomingLife I found using john deere's built in greenstar systems more difficult to get used to because the wheels move to steer but the steering wheel stays still if you move the steering wheel manually the guidance steering cuts out. Fantastic piece of kit the more you use it the more you'll like it and wonder how you managed without.

Hey! You may have solved your own issue. Use the auto steer to guide your hay feeder to feed in a different path each feeding. The seed heads will help establish new grass that needs reseeding and cows will not ruin areas due to continuous feeding in the same areas. You won’t have to reseed these areas.

When we set up auto steer on our 8770 I near freaked out at first. Now wouldn’t be without it it’s a big time saver and fuel saver. Reduced overlap paid for it in the first year.

The auto steer is really interesting. I’ve driven them before but only over row crops at the Texas A&M research farm. Really interesting how you’re already finding other uses for it outside of that. I never thought of using it as a way to actually get from one place to another. Another great video as always Mike.

Very interesting new technology I kind of chuckled when you said look no hands kind of reminds me of the old saying look ma no hands. Going to have to mount that base unit up on a pole so you always have line of sight. But I agree with you on it helping out this winter with the feeding part getting to the hay yard and all. It will be very interesting to watch and see how all you use it. God bless yall

Great gadget! Thanks for showing us the bolt on auto steer. I can see it as a life safety tool - navigating when otherwise occupied with livestock could be useful, or in low visibility situations.

Mike awesome video one thing to remember is if you move you rtk base station to a different location you lines will be off so just a hint you might want to setup the base station in a more permenant location so the tractor will still make it through the gates. I realize this video is 2 months old and you might have already figured this out but just wanted to tell you great setup though and I never thought of using it for that( getting to and from hay yard or feeding cattle)

Howdy Mike, pretty COOL 🐦. GPS in VT 😝. My new car was delivered in the Winter down a closed Rd. The Guy says at least we know the 4 wheel drive works, I said how do you mean, he said we had a hell of a time getting over that Rd.... I said there is a Tar road down this street! Those GPS antennas have become a hot commodity for thieves Mike. Sort of like catalytic converters. Don't leave them attached to the tractor outside overnight or outside during the day where they can be easily seen and accessed. I hear they've been stealing a lot of those things.

Ok this doesn't have anything to do with this video but I am watching one of your older videos, I am playing catch up, and I saw you cleaning your project list board, it's dump day and your looking for projects, anyhow I saw you using something in a bottle to clean your white board, did you know hand sanitizer works beautifully on them, totally cleans it off with no smears left behind 😀 👍. That is funny, this is the third channel that I follow that just got a John Deere autosteer unit. One was an older unit that gets leaned against the standard steering wheel, then one like this, but this is the first that showed a how to install the unit. I appreciate that part especially. That nut holding the steering wheel on is super sketchy. I hope you can get a socket on it and torque it down... Everybody says they get an overlap on the gps, but that the actual planting or whatever seems to be fine. There is supposedly an update on route from the manufacturer "soon." I do NOT like self-driving cars at high speed but for tractors and stuff, it is a great technology. I think with cars, if they do not want to drive, hire a driver or take a cab or Lyft or something. Yes I love driving and I have old school vehicles, no gps or anything, my phone does, but I am in Wyoming it is still better with a map and a compass and really I don't drive anywhere I don't know where it is. I admit I do use gps in my semi truck driving system simulated driving rig. But it does not drive me. I do definitely see the need on a farm/ranch. It makes sense.

Imagine, snowing with fifty mile per hour wind in the dark. You can still get to hay yard even with zero visibility. Would take a lot of using first to trust it but should be a great tool for the ranch.

Hi Mike, you may want to replace that rear window wiper blade. So that expensive rear window does not get scratched when the wiper is being used.

One thing about setting up an RTK base station. Every time you set up a base station in a different spot, your guidance lines will shift that much. Unless you setup your station on a surveyed point can come back to that EXACT point, your lines will be off.

When you are seeding, harrowing etc. Learn how to skiptrack. In other words, do every other row across the field. It makes turning with a wide implement easier and you end up back at your pickup when you are done.

I would think repeated driving over and over would compact soil for that trail but do see advantage for seeding or even mowing maybe also see if you had a hurt calf to transport in cab would let you Handel calf better only problem I see is need obstacle avoidance if feeding not to run over animals or structures
