Robert Ferreira true. Even the lawful good ones can be dicks. “Don’t kill him. He must be punished for his crimes.” “But he has killed so many and can control the weak minded without a single magic item.” “He must be punished by the laws.” “Fuck off.” *drives sword into the heart of BBEG*
My eyes became wet on that part and I scrolled down the comments cos I was sure someone would mention it. To be honest, I didn't even understand the meaning at first. The logic reached me after the emotion. It doesn't matter where the power comes from, but who and how s/he uses it. But can't quite tell why it was so emotional. He said it casually. Words had no power. He didn't do any spectacular gestures while saying it. Yet the emotion it unleashed knocked me down.
This whole scene were they convince fjord that it doesn't matter is great, and when Travis almost cries and laughs is sooo good. And than I love how Sam is so good at carrying the anti meta game jokes through the scene and just omygosh I love this whole clip
@@Gregor1657 Haha I didn't even think of that XD I think Tary still had artificer abilities at least. Fjord is like a classless NPC pretty much. A high-level classless NPC, but still.
@@dylanperkins7939 If i was DM that would be mad inspiration points and a free Actor feat and probably an extra 2 charisma points holy shit that was the wildest shit ive ever seen in DND period!
@@RabidDogma I so agree, he was throwing Travis a bone because he was teetering on the edge of crying. No way to be sure, but I think Sam saw that, and knew Travis wouldn't like to be caught tearing up on the stream, so he gave him a verbal slap to snap him out of it.
All his friends giving him stuff, just talking over each other in handing him shit until he's basically a crying mess, proving the power of friendship, may very well be the most anime moment ever in CR history, and I love it!
The fact that it was so genuine and spur of the moment is something incredible. We are used to seeing that kind of stuff in scripted kids shows and stuff that go out of their way to set that stuff up... but it's always so artificial. To see a group of adults all come together like that without realizing it... that was something truly special.
My party had something like this happen when the fighter in our group took on a rusty ooze. Dude’s armor and everything was wrecked. But the forge cleric and artificer and rogue started handing him stuff to bring him back to something close to his power. Dude was moved. He was sad for his spear but the rogue had a sword she barely used so he became a swordsman after a little practice.
Well that is partly because he is awesome at rp and commits to the character. And partly because he loves to poke the sleeping dragon just to see what happens. :P Craven edge and the deck of many things being the more notable examples. But even with smaller things Travis is always the one that says "Lets do it" :D
My absolute favorite RP for the entire gang, in either season: Fjord, the first time he lost his powers, whispering "no no no no no..." to himself, in his normal voice instead of his fake accent, and having a freak-out walk through the town. Just absolutely perfect, and understated, and completely comfortable with his decision for his character. No scenery chewing, no "pay attention to me, this is my scene" - just pure roleplaying in the moment.
At that point I was thinking about how when they were in the Yuan-Ti Temple and Nott got stoned off her ass and tried to cast Teleport, even though she didn't have that spell.
@@TjerkMuller Yes, because they aren't actually smoking marijuana, dumbass. They call it tabac in certain sections of the book. Language changes over time and that book was written a very long time ago. They didn't consider weed to mean marijuana back then. They smoke tobacco like everyone else.
@@noneofyourbusiness2437 errrr yeah it still was. Drugs were pretty fucking everywhere in the 50s and then RAMPANT in the 60s and 70s. Its a really easy fact check. "According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term first appeared in print in 1932" Took less than 10 seconds. LOTR was written between 1937 and 1949.
You gotta love the fact that everyone is freaking out, and then there's Taliesin who's just sitting there nodding, going "Yes. Yes! You are making me so proud" Taliesin knows the struggle of being bound to an evil entity that you want nothing to do with. As Taliesin said, Travis/Fjord did what percy never could, he threw his own "cursed" weapon in the pit and said "Enough!"
Every character had amazing moments in this but no one is mentioning that Caleb - a character who at the beginning was stealing and hiding items from other members of the party to keep for himself - started the movement to give items to Fjord. Not only that, but the first item he gave was the burning hands glove from way before that caused him to be told to share for the first time by Molly. Caduceus said only Fjord changed, and right afterward Caleb changed, too. Good boys all around this episode
@@kootiepatra im a little late to the discussion, but I'd say he definitely is. In refjored, Caleb and Fjord share a moment before beginning the heist to steal the ring and reminisce about the time Fjord put his place to calebs throat. Fjord apologizes but Caleb quickly dismisses it as if he knows what fjord did was deserved. When Molly died Caleb was only beginning to realize he kind of enjoyed this new thing he had going, but the stress of putting his life on the line to get it back was a little much for him. Now though, that bond is even deeper, Caleb no doubt views them as a family and I think if another Lorenzo situation had happened, there would be no inner struggle whatsoever, just blazing fireballs of revenge.
No joke, easily one of my favorite parts of this is watching how Laura reacts as her hubby's character development is happening. The face when she realizes that he's dropping the fake accent is PRICELESS.
Jeff B he should, however now that Travis is speaking for longer stretches in his British accent, I’ve noticed that he can’t always keep the RP accent consistent and sometimes slides into something a little less formal, much the same way as Liam did with Vax, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he went slightly cockney on some words. The slight variation in accents worked well for Vax’s character though (and seemed to be a conscious choice, from what I can tell) and it could be that it works well for Fjord too, particularly as he’s spent to long around people with completely different accents, it’s natural he’d be subconsciously affected. (Also I’m not meaning to criticise either Travis or Liam by saying their British accents vary sometimes, obviously they’re both super talented and way better at voices than I could ever hope to be, it’s just an observation).
Suzy Lightning Good point, Cockney is WAY closer to home and would use the harsher non-rhotic “ahr” kinda sound. Speaking as a filthy colonial who has never been to the UK it can be tough to avoid slipping between accents (even though RP and Cockney have pretty pronounced differences). I guess it’s probably like a British person trying to sound like a Southern US accent and slipping into Western US.
@@euapatroaeospets947 SPOILERS FOR CAMPAIGN ONE. Taliesin's character in Campaign one named Percival Frederickstein Klossowski de Rolo III or simply just "Percy" had a weapon that is cursed and was controlling him. Percy was able to destroy for a long time but didn't as he considers the weapon priceless. It was only destroyed because one of the PC's destroyed it, ending the curse for percy. The original comment is about how Fjord made a decision the Percy couldn't. Because of it, Taliesin is very happy that someone could make a decision that Percy couldn't
You can make it up as you go tbh. We always give away small details during RP in my group and sometimes we just thought of them on the spot. If you say its canon and it makes sense then it’s real.
We started to play DSA (the black eye) and I as a nooby was searching for plants, as the dm asked what I was looking for my brain invented double stinging stinging nettles... and they are a thing now in our campaing
Doesn't Matt help set up their backstories somehow, or at least tease bits and pieces of their backstory for them to reveal? Like in whispers/private texts and such?
It's funny. Fjord, Beau, and Caleb all have the same Strength modifier yet the monk and even the wizard carried Nott with ease yet we're supposed to believe Fjord, whose race has a natural bulk to them, can't.
@@dylanmcla Im just amazed people are STILL sad about Molly's death. Call me insensitive, but i dont miss him at all anymore. Caduceus is a great Character.
I mean, when people talk about clutch moments of critical role you get scanlans counterspell and jesters cupcake, but people forget fjords charm monster on the laughing hand and his defiance to ukatoa, both very important game changing moments
@@Idofphoenix Nah. Fjord's got this. As a Hexblade, he's got proficiencies with Martial Weapons and Shields. He knows how to use all that stuff. And as a Warlock, he'd be proficient with "point hand shoot fire." Of course, without his Patron, he's lost his Sword Specialization. But he'd still be able to use any sword he picks up, just not as well as he would be able to if he had the power of his patron coursing through his veins.
Just imagine how cinematic this scene would be in a film... the scene only being lit my the lava, the framing, and when Fjord casts out the falchion all we’d hear is the whining of wind as it passes through. Then the shot of the blade and fjord in the background with the eye of uk’otoa in the falchion lining up with fjord’s as it sinks. PURE CINEMATOGRAPHY
Then for a cinematic scene, make it go around fjord when he holds the sword over the lava. Then make the music stop as he feels the comfort, a small window through the smoke will be seen as he pull the blade back. The scene follows the sword with fjord in the back.
I keep imagining that just before the falchion sinks it's last couple inches into the lava it gives a thumbs up just before going under. *Waits to see if anyone gets that reference*
FUN FACT: for anybody who didn't know. 17:35 - Travis is the voice actor of Roy Mustang in Fullmetal Alchemist/FMA Brotherhood. That character usually wears a glove and can emit a fiery explosion from his hands. Now Fjord has a glove of blasting.
@@thenosieyartist6924 nope, at least some crits, nothing is going to happen... It's a god for fucks sake... He barely came as far as any mortal whould... Not even close.
@@pantelisrrasoulis2007 Except that's not what he says. He initially tells Fjord, verbatim, to "make an intimidation check." Only once Fjord pushes the sword in another inch and steps directly up to the lava, a move which you can tell Matt finds dangerous and ballsy, does Matt say "you can make another intimidation check if you'd like." Matt's look and response to Travis could very well have meant "good luck" or "you're crazy; he's going to kill you" or simply "shit, I wasnt expecting this." Now, I'm not saying you're wrong or that he was close to success; I'm just pointing out that we don't know what Matt Mercer could, would, will or won't do, what Fjord's patron might do, or what piece of lore or backstory involving Fjord and his link to Uka-Toejam & Earl might still be hidden from the audience's view.
@@MichaelNelson1965 I mean taking into account the other god that the Kiln was built for could have intervened. So we have Uko'toa, Melora the Wildmother, and possibly the Allhammer contending for Fjord's services....
I'm sure self-sacrificing your blood into a holy brazier shows the owner of that temple you mean business. My money is on Melora starting the switch over
I LOVED how the party supported Fjord in their own ways. Clay was just a sweetheart as always, knowing Fjord's true potential. The one that warmed my heart was Caleb, how he gave him glove of blasting so he wouldn't be vulnerable. It shows both characters have come a long way, especially the scene during the heist back early in the campaign. This was really touching.
Yeah, Caleb basically spurred on a small collective movement on Fjords behalf. "Here take this.. and where's that whip?" He was determined to reassure him he did the right thing.
Casual reminder that Beau is the only one of the entire Nein that doesn't have magic, or at least the magic one uses to cast spells. She might've been talking as an outsider's perspective on all the amazing shit the others can do, while she can basically just punch good.
deffdefying I still think this is a weird line of thought. Sure everyone can cast spells (though fjord and nott only barely), but the amount of ridiculous and powerful stuff monks can do shouldn’t lead to thinking of the monk as lesser. I mean, she literally ran up a 300 foot tall tree, stunned enemies at extremely crucial moments, done insane amounts of damage, and so much more over the campaign. Its like making it to the olympics but not getting a medal placement. You aren’t the best of the best, but you made it to the olympics for god’s sake. That alone is a crazy achievement.
@@deffdefying4803 She can literally use ki to be super human fast, stun enemies, run up walls, ignore gravity to an extent and more. I like Beau, but I really never believed that whole “insecure in my power and worth” idea Marisha flirts with at times, simply because of the amount of obvious utility that Beau displays in and out of combat. I feel like Fjord is a better exploration of this idea, mainly because it’s more integral to Fjord’s story. Not a Marisha hater or anything, I’m fully aware she is amazing, just don’t like this and one or two other aspects of Beau. Edited for typo.
I suppose that Uk'otoa is not something that you can just say goodbye without consequences... Expecially if the last orb is still in your chest, though inactive, as I suspect. The other possibility is that now the orb is under the molten lava, as the sword melt, but I think it is unlikely. Next few episodes we will see what kind of ordeal Fjord will have to endure to sigil this change, and it will be an ordeal to pass without powers...
Everybody talking about Cad's words of wisdom but can we talk about Caleb? "Aim over there" Fjord shoots fire out of his fingers. "But thats the glove" "Yes but it's in your hand."
@@Gray963 But in this case it made perfect sense; sure Uky can find others, but Fjord and the crew had knowledge of where what when why and how to release him. Losing Fjord is a BIG loss, UKY has time for sure, but it is still a stinging blow and Fjord knew that.
Everyone says what a great storyteller Matt is, but this Episode proved that Travis is a great teller of stories too. The entire cast is so good at weaving their tales into the narrative that Matt lays out. Well done Travis, for giving us the most shocking piece of your characters story so far. Bravo.
the moment he admits hes just normal guy again and they all just start offering stuff for him to use with no care for themselves or greed is such a amazing moment for the campaign.
I absolutely love Nott's question at 16:33. She's trying to figure out if she would be able to deal with losing her goblin powers and going back to a normal life
@@BisexualWrath Maybe, maybe not. RAW Polymorph won't let her keep her skills and stats, and can be dispelled so is temporary. Reincarnate RAW also causes the resultant race to be randomly picked, but she would keep her Rogue stuff.
Listen, this whole ending scene makes me so emtional but when Travis goes- "But- that's the glove," with a little desperate laugh at the end, like he's still trying to protest, it's not him, he can't do anything, it was the glove not him- IT JUST GETS TO ME SO BAD.
What makes this even better is that Fjord originally owned the glove and traded it to Caleb for that special water armor at Caleb's request, because fire. I love how he just gave it back without a moment's hesitation.
Interestingly the character the class is based off of in part, Elric of Melnibone, once did this with his sword Stormbringer, except it was into the ocean. No more than five seconds later he dived in after it. Elric had a hard life, and it both was and wasnt his fault.
@@zeterzero4356 Just saw this comment and WTH I've not read the Eternal Champion books since I was a kid (started with Corum coz my dad had it lying around, then Hawkmoon).
My warlock actually may end up doubling down on her pact. Her sister was being used in a necromancy spell and they got to her as she was being sacrificed. When they saved her I quietly mummbled, "she will live. I will double down and give anything." So we will see how my DM takes that.
@@calliecalamity8787 It's a real testimony of his character that the moment uko'toa (spelled that wrong) threatened him to consume his freinds to grow in strength he was ready to throw away what he thought was his identity, Travis's characters have always been my favorite (not being bias because of my last name)
I LOVE how happy this made Talesin. His wide eyed wonder through the whole thing- drawing on his playing of Percy, his general love for awesome horrorgore moments - I think he had a great time last thursday.
I broke my pact with The Raven Queen in a campaign. Out of the story I was tired of warlock and wasn't having fun. I RP'ed it as my Tabaxi deciding he couldn't rely on supernatural powers to fix his shortcomings. She took all my memories and I made him an Artificer.
i love that even from the start of this scene you can see just how *done* travis is, how *done* fjord is. he knew the moment that dream began that he was finished with uk'otoa. he wants those powers, yeah, but would he do anything to get them back? ...no. he's *done.*
It was heart-melting when everyone decided to give Fjord their valuables and their weapons to outfit him without his powers. It consistently makes me smile :)
Legit my second favourite CR-moment of all time. I don't think anything can dethrone Scanlan's lvl 9 counterspell but this whole sequence sure came damn close!
And this is what cemented Fjord as my favorite character in the Nein. As Talisen said, "he out-Percy-ed Percy," who was my fav in Vox Machina for a similar reason.
Honestly... there was a little part of me that was hoping that the blade would still be in tact, but just submerged. So Fjord would try to summon it just for the hell of it and get it back like "Oh, god dammit!"
SharkShocker I don’t think this is the last we’ve seen of the blade, its an ancient and sentient magical artifact with the key to a demigod on it... i think we’ll see it again
The Great Goblin Wizard Kazamaraz No Yasha uses Mollys body and has Obam uses it but really it was a double double cross and mollys soul locks oban in place so yasha can kill him for real
"If you make a comment about my strength, I might throw you in the lava" "I will- *You Couldn't,* but..." I love Nott, I Love Fjord, I love Cad, I love Caleb, Everyone in this whole moment/arc beat was just so god damn perfect!
I love the thumbnail, looks like a kid in PE dropping the mic on his coach while all his friends on the bleachers are going wild. Also this was one of the best moments of C2, by far.
Im actually just at episode 2 but i remember the scene were the crownsguard inform them that they'll leave and to stay in the inn. And he just, slams the door after their message. And that was when i knew: He is the guy making powermoves. Glad that this confirmed it.
And then he proceeds to save Beau and Cad with just pure willpower and strength alone. Man the dice-gods mean it good with Travis. The whole worm fight was amazing
Favorite interaction (aside from the "You couldn't" sass from Nott) got edited out (Caduceus healing Fjord). But my ACTUAL favorite part of this was also edited out... Taliesin giving Percy props to Travis!! #LoveTheseNerdyAssVoiceActors #Critter #Critter4Life
With his stats...hmm, he may have to take the Oath of the Ancients Paladin. The tenants of that Oath are pretty simple...protect your own Light, and the Light in the world. A nice change of pace from the visions of powerlust and doom. That, or perhaps Archfey Warlock...that would suit the Wildmother and her domain.
I suspect that it will be an opportunity for Matt and Travis to sit down together and explore their creativity. Its an opportunity to investigate the idea of `redeemed`. IDK if we ever really knew if the warlock pact with Uggutoa? was agreed to by Fjord or simply `there` after the shipwreck. I kind of like the idea of a class based around the conscious choice to sacrifice a power rooted in evil that takes a little bit from Paladin, but is more rooted in divine spell based protection/damage reduction and attack rather than the Martial Path.
Yeah paladin is tricky with low strength and dex. Their spells aren’t really good enough to carry the class on their own. Honestly I’m hoping for sorcerer! He’s got the charisma for it, and sorcerers sometimes come into to their powers through crazy events that happen to them, so it’d be fairly easy to weave it into the story.
Just seeing taliesin being so proud of Travis / Fjord because Percy never had the balls (and way too much interest against it anyway) to ditch his patron xD
