Flaperons for Newbies
The vast majority of airplanes, to include RC model aircraft, use ailerons, movable control surfaces in the wing, to control roll or bank. Many aircraft, to again include RC models, use flaps to shorten takeoff distance and allow for slower landing speeds.
It is very easy, using a computer RC transmitter such as the Spektrum DX6, to combine the functions of ailerons and flaps in an RC model aircraft by incorporating flaperons.
This video will go over the basics of ailerons and flaps in an RC model aircraft, show a demonstration of flaperons in my Lite Ranger model aircraft, then show you how to easily set up the flaperons with your DX6 transmitter.
Flaperons require a six channel receiver and two servos.

@@TimMcKay56 Tim, I forgot to ask: it seems to me that with flaps, they have take off settings and landing settings. How do you arrive at the proper angles for that?

@@Glenfilthie1 John: Flaps provide lift and drag. The first increment of flaps (around 25% of total extension) is a lot more lift than drag, used for takeoff. The full amount of flaps, say 100% of extension, lots more drag than lift, used for landing. So for takeoff use around 25% or less and full flaps for landing. In the B-777 we took off with 10 degrees of flaps, landed with 40 degrees. Tim

1st time seeing flaperons in use was the F18 demo over Ramsey Lake .80's . High alpha pass and dirty pass were really cool. ANd outside square loop.

Flaperons can cause tip stalls, especially when the wing is tapered and the ailerons are a constant width. Also, flaperons can cause adverse yaw because the aileron on the outside of the turn will be lower and creating more drag than the aileron on the inside of the turn. You will likely need to use rudder to keep the plane from yawing in the opposite direction.

@txkflier...I recently picked up an older model e-flight Pulse 15e , that has only wing tip ailerons...do you think if I set up my flaperons to be used only when landing straight in on final, it would be OK...all videos I have watched on this model state it lands a little hot, so I thought that adding flaperons might help.......thanks

@@garyvale8347 The specs I found show it has a wing area of 551 sq-in and it should weigh about 59 ounces. That gives a wing loading of about 15.4 oz/sq-ft (551/144=3.83 and 59/3.83=15.4). That’s a really low number, so it should fly pretty slow without stalling. However, it’s a fairly clean (low drag) design. The trick to landing it slow will be to bleed the speed off first. Fly a fairly low pattern so that you aren’t diving at the runway. Make sure you don’t get too slow going downwind..

I´ll see if it´s possible to make a three position flaperons with 20/100% or 10° and 40° as you mentioned before. But the last one probably isn´t possible for functional ailerons... Maybe increasing travel on the ailerons (?). My Trojan T-28 1,1m hasn´t too much aileron travel on it´s standard configuration.

Great explanations on the theory site as well as the practical! I´m just a flying beginner and after flying 2,5 months STOL models tried a T-28 1,1m from E-Flite and was astonished how good sche flies. I could do take offs and landings without SAFE. But yesterday and today I tried landings and a very narrow road and the plane was a bit too fast for me. Today with side with I did a bit of a hard landing with a bounce I suppose and my beatiful AeroCam prop broke. I wanted to look for tips for landings and found the flaperon topic. That would be a good option for me I think. I have a DX8 and an AR631 6-channel receiver. I suppose I would need to give the channel of SAFE up? I still don´t understand very good if I need a channel on my Tx or my receiver or both (for SAFE Select). Have a great day, and best regards from Bavaria

Francisco: Not sure on how SAFE interacts with flaperons. www.HorizonHobby.com technical chat support may help. But, as a longer term objective, do learn to fly without SAFE. I think this will make you a better RC pilot. Tim

@@TimMcKay56 Hello Tim, yes I want to learn to fly just without SAFE. But my first plane -a Turbo Timber 1.5- is after repairs so nose heavy that it doesn´t fly well without SAFE. It´s strange because in the air she goes up. I need someone experienced (I´m starting in a club) looks how to put the CG right and trim it mechanically. I have some Ideas too. I have programmed flaperons now and SAFE works with one aileron although that one has less travel downwards in comparisson to the "free" aileron that in full flap position also goes down a bit. But I hope that it works well. The other reason is that my daughter or someone else can fly with this plane in SAFE. There is also the possibility to programm the receiver from scratch. That is the next step. Thanks!

I am finishing a greatly modified Bobber. The build is for separate aileron and flaps. I am tempted to physically tie the aileron and flap on each side together and use the combination as a flaperon. Any comments?

James: You can tie the aileron and flaps together, but if they move the same direction at the same time, essentially strip ailerons. The advantage of flaperons is getting the effect of flaps (both sides down for landing), but retaining differential movement for roll control (ailerons). Tim

Gary: SAFE gets real complicated when not used with the plane the SAFE setup was designed for, see my video on AS3X. AS3X should work fine with a DX6 flaperon setup, I would say. Tim

Good video. Please advise. I have Spektrum AR631 Rx and Spekrrum DX8 G2 and successfully set up flaperon function. Plane flys well. But My left aileron/flaperon no longer is actively moving in Safe mode. AS3X and Safe only controls outputs of Ports 1 Thrott, 2 Aileron, 3 Elevator, and 4 Rudder. So now Left flaperon/aileron is controlled by Port 6 and Safe not controlling Port 6. Plane still flys great. It will recover in safe and stabilize in AS3X with only Right aileron. Is there a workaround? If not, not a big problem.

I have 6 chanel balsa 1600 mm plane,and i have a Jumper TG8Pro the problem is how can i Mix in DEVIATION TX a swich to act like a flaps when i need them?There is a loot of tutorials for OPEN TX,EDGE TX and Futaba but i jus LOVE MY JUMPER and i dont want to buy another RC just to be able to setup flaperons in mix becose i know that i can MIX that funcion on my Deviation tx i just canot find tutorial for DEV TX do you know something about dev tx mixing and how to mix?Do i need ad a Complex or Expo and other in order to program 1 swich to act like flaps?My radio has a 12 chanels and my rx have a 8 and i am using just 6 ch for now...

Tim thank you for doing the video. I am running into a problem; I hope you can help me with. I have a AR631 receiver, and I have programed AX3X and SAFE. My airplane has 1 aileron on each wing and 2 servos, one servo attached to 1 aileron. Both servos are connected to the receiver with a Y cable to the aileron channel. I followed your directions, and have it configured like you have it. My problem is that the right aileron goes down and the left aileron goes up. If you look at your video at 7:20, you have -100% Flap and on the left of the screen you have RAL at 67% and LAL at -67%. My screen has the same thing, a positive percentage for RAL and negative percentage for LAL. Any ideas on how I can get both flaperons down?

Bob: For the flaperons to work, I am pretty sure you need a 6 channel receiver, and use channel 1 and 6 for the two aileron servos. Do not use a Y cord. On your transmitter you’ll have to figure out how to activate the flaperon input. Most transmitter manuals can be Googled. Tim
