RC Electronics for Newbies
In this video I will discuss the basics of how to bind a 2.4 GHz radio control (RC) transmitter with a receiver followed by connections for the electronic speed controller (ESC), lipo battery, brushless electric motor and control surface servos.
I will go over basic Spektrum DX6 transmitter controls, trims, computer screens and menus. I will bind the DX6 to a Spektrum AR620 receiver. I will next connect the lipo battery to the airborne system and show how the battery, through the ESC, powers the brushless electric motor, the receiver and the servos.
Finally, I will offer some tips on connecting the various components to avoid an electrical short.
Here is a link to my RU-vid Channel:

Nicely done Tim. You covered all of the things that are not explained anywhere in the instruction manuals. 1. how the receiver is powered-through the throttle connector (cant see the ESC in my plane). 2. which way to plug the servo connectors into the receiver. So simple but when you are new, hard to know. thank you! Bob
@TimMcKay56
@TimMcKay56 2 года назад
Bob: The ESC, in a normal RC installation, plugs into the receiver, usually into Port 1. The magic happens and the proper current is supplied to the receiver and servos. For most receivers, put the black/brown servo wire to the bottom of the receiver. If you get it backwards, no problem as the servo will just not work. Tim

I am new to RC flying. I have been learning to fly on an eflite Apprentice 1.5m trainer. I am now starting the design process of scratch building my first foam airplane. My problem is in the selection of the electronics. There are so many options I don't know what to select. What receiver? What ESC? What Servos? Is a separate satellite receiver and flight control a better option than an all in one receiver? Just so confusing and I cannot find a good answer when searching the internet. I would be of benefit to have a video discussing these various options. Thanks!

@TimMcKay56

You can connect the servos without a motor connected. Servos will work. The throttle is run by the ESC. Just plug the ESC into the receiver channel 1. And of course connect the motor to the ESC. Tim

@@TimMcKay56 ok but how do i plug power with out esc and motor ? what do i have to use ?

The ONLY way to connect power (a battery) is through the ESC. The ESC will make necessary voltage corrections to power receiver and servos. Tim

@gordonmckay4523
@gordonmckay4523 5 месяцев назад
@@EngineEnginer You are making this way too complicated. Start with three items: An electric motor (three wires), an ESC (electronic speed control) and a receiver. The ESC is your throttle control. Plug the three wires from the ESC to the motor. Take the two wires (always a red and black) and plug to the motor. Take the servo plug from the ESC and install into channel 1 of the receiver. Bind receiver to the transmitter and you are done. More servos (elevator, rudder, etc.) plug into channels 2-6 on the receiver. I just started my RC hobby, at the urging of a friend. I don't know yet if it's a good idea, but I'll try how far it takes me. As a teenage boy, I built only gliders (ribbed) and this was where my interest slowly ended, because in the 1960s, such RC equipment was very expensive and only tethered. I bought "AeroScaut" and sent it to Europe. I'm also going to buy a Grumman G-44 Widgeon, but I'm wondering if I can combine it with each other. I need to buy a transmitter, receiver and battery. What cheap 6-channel equipment would you suggest to me, as a layman, because 2 years have passed since the show and nothing has changed too much?
@TimMcKay56
@TimMcKay56 2 года назад
Witold: Please try and avoid "cheap" RC equipment. You can find it on eBay, but why risk a crash with hardware not up to par? RC electronics quite affordable these days. Tim, I am trying to set up a 2-channel glider with my students. I am used to plugging the battery into the ESC and the ESC into the receiver. However, a glider does not use an ESC. How do I power the receiver in this case? Where does one plug a battery? Additionally, a receiver has three pins for every port and I assume a battery has a 2-pin plug (positive and negative). How does that go together?
@TimMcKay56
@TimMcKay56 26 дней назад
No worries, watch this video on the BATT port of your receiver:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JA21uiTF3V8.html You'll need a battery for the flight pack. This is usually a nicad battery, not fully sure if folks use lipos for this. They may. But in the old days (gas engines), everyone had an in-flight battery pack the plugged unto the receiver and powered the receiver and servos on the airplane. Tim
@my_dear_friend_
@my_dear_friend_ 26 дней назад
@@TimMcKay56 - Yes, I am familiar with how this worked in the old days. I don't want to throw a heavy four cell NiCad flight pack into a relatively light glider. There must be a much lighter way to do this these days. Some people talk about powering everything onboard thier gliders with a 1S lipo and those batteries have a plug for two pins. That is where my knowledge ends though. I don't want to fry my receiver.

The BEC is what threw me for a curve. They were problematic at their inception and perhaps they remain so? People have lost power to their receivers and their planes crashed. I was prepared to run a AA flight pack on my receiver and not use the BEC But I think I will give it a shot now. Also the polarity on the motor connection had me stymied. That is cleared up now. And I had deduced that the binding has done away with the freq. board and flags. Leaving glow for electric is not very straight forward. The manuals that come with the ESC and motor are little help to the the E noob.

Hey hi I am a huge fan of your video I have some doubts Why does my lipo battery (lemon 2200mah,11.1volt,3s,30c) spark continuously while i try to connect to my esc (30a (deans connecter)) Maybe is it because of friction I am actually making a plane And I am using the battery mentioned above and the 30a esc and 2 servos and a 2200kv brushless motor And do u have any idea of the total flight time
@TimMcKay56
@TimMcKay56 2 года назад
Vijay: Thanks for tuning in! I have no idea why the lipo battery is sparking, but this is a Red Flag and should not be happening. There is likely an open metal surface on the connector somewhat that is allowing a short. Or, may be an older battery where the internal cells are failing. Lipos can be a huge fire hazard, do dispose of the battery if in any doubt. Tim
