Imagine your a shop clerk: all of a sudden there’s sparks of lightning and a blur. Also there’s randomly a $20 sitting on the counter. Two weeks go by and your boss makes you and some coworkers take stock and find that there are 10 missing items and random extra cash you’ve shoved into the til or just shoved in your own pocket because it just appeared. Now you’ve been fired.

⁠​⁠@@zachlewis9751The store owner wouldn’t think there are missing items, when the amount of “random extra cash” as you put it, corresponds to the cost of the total of all the items that were taken. Unless the store owner is stupid, they can determine that the 20$ left on the counter that day, corresponds to, two 10$ chocolate bars that were taken that same day, for example. It’s common sense, because there is no card payments for the purchase of the items, but there is a cash amount that corresponds to the cost of the items. Also, as a worker you’d have to be quite the idiot, to pocket money that was left on the shop counter. If the money was left on the counter, it’s common sense that you can’t just pocket the money. It clearly didn’t just manifest from thin air, it had to be left by someone who purchased something. So you would do inventory to see what item was purchased with the money on the counter. Example: I did inventory and see that there are 6 water bottles with no credit card purchase history, but the amount of money I found on the counter is the same as the cost of the 6 water bottles.
