Honestly, I hope the Sirens use both the litteral meaning of thier name, and the mythological meaning, too! It'd be such a missed opportunity! Maybe as a tertiary logo?
For the Montreal logo the bird shape is likely a reference to traditional Quebecois folk song "Alouette". Montreal's CFL team is called the Alouettes after all, and their logo is also a bird.
I am disappointed in the Ottawa one. There is a history of using red black and white as their primary colours for their sports team. From NHL, to CFL x2, even the AAA baseball team in the past. I would have preferred Guard as well.
I actually love the name Sceptres. I'm surprised by how little love it's gotten. On the other hand, I'm surprised a lot of people liked the Fleet logo. It's like the Whalers but 10x less creative. On a side note, though, someone had mentioned to me how they all look like they'd be better as shoulder patches rather than primary logos, and I feel like I fully agree. Victoire seems to hold up as a primary logo, but the rest, I would say, would be better as just shoulder patches.
That is true, but I still think you're being a little hard on Boston. As far as the letter logos go, it's between the Fleet and the Sceptres for which looks the best. On the note of shoulder patch alts, I think the Sirens could stand to make use of isolating the blocky NY part of the logo and using that on its own for merch and promotional materials. I think it could look good as a shoulder patch and definitely would look great on a teal and navy beanie/tuque/knitted cap.
Whalers were the first thing I thought of seeing the Fleet's logo. Not a knock at the Fleet, mind, I think it looks fantastic. Just funny that Boston specifically has taken a swipe at the Whalers for the second time.
I’m really quite disappointed in the Sirens. The name has so much potential, yet the logo is a mere wordmark. Also, they’ll be playing at the Prudential Center in New Jersey - a state which has wrongly been branded “New York” by sports teams for many years. (I also wonder if their goal sound will be different from the Devils’ goal horn)
Firstly, I’m stoked for the next season! Wish it were possible to get tickets in the big smoke, but they sell out instantly. Now, I know everyone’s a critic, but my goodness, there were so many great name ideas from the fans that were widely embraced - but none were used. At least they didn’t force the non-S plurals on every team in the end.
Victoire is on point all around, but many of these feel half hearted and lack creativity. Some of these, especially the Charge logo leave a lot to be desired
The PWHL did an outstanding job with the reveal especially doing it on breakfast telly, all six are amazing especially my Walter Cup champions in Minnesota LET’S GO FROST!!!
Super psyched to see not only jerseys and more merch sporting the Sirens logo (I'm talking pins and different kinds of hats, more shirt designs, etc.), but also cards. The PWHL teased a partnership with Upper Deck forever ago. I'm ready to see my beloved Pizza Rats printed on glossy cardstock!
I expect you’ll get one (or more) eventually, but the league needs to ensure its founding franchises are all successful and financially stable before expanding at all, and especially before significantly increasing travel distance. We would probably see more east coast growth (Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Québec City, etc.) before the league even considers going any further west, even if “further west” is only Winnipeg. I predict that the league will grow to 12 teams before it considers anything west of Winnipeg.
The New England Whalers were a charter member of the WHA. They played their innagural season in Boston prior to moving to Hartford. Logo used a barbed harpoon through a rounded W. Seeing the Boston Fleet use a W flipped sideways with barbs is a full circle representation of that history in my opinon. A bit surprised that got missed.
Honestly ottawa should have been called the septres considering they’re the capital. But Guard would have been better too. It’s easily the weakest name and design. The logo looks like a washed up Calgary Flames affiliate.
The turned down the Boston Blitz?! Play "Ballroom Blitz" after every goal. It's fun to say. Easy to remember. Thunderbolt motifs. X-mas mascot Blitzen. Headlines like "Blitzkrieg!" Toronto Tempest?! Storm Motifs? Thunder and wind sounds over the PA to hype the crowd. And you'll never convince me it shouldn't have been the Minnesota Reign. Literally just the Prince logo on their shirts. Montreal Victoire is good. I wish the logo was less stylized. It seems like a modernist abstraction of a more clear and obvious logo. One with an actual fleur de lis. New York Noise.
Would have liked to have seen a graphic designer breakdown of what was good and what wasn’t, rather than what sounded like a read-through of the PWHL press release.
Yeah I’d prefer to present the artwork and allow viewers to make their own judgements on something as subjective as this. Find seven designers to break these logos down and you’ll get seven different opinions. What would that really tell you? Form your own opinions.
This brand launch is full of missed opportunities. There are so many sports (and hockey specific) designers out there that could have done so much more for the league and the players. They deserved much, much better.
@@KevinQ25 Minnesota isn’t the only place that gets very cold, I mean there are 3 teams in Canada for this league, which gets just as and in some cases colder than Minnesota. Frost is still very bland imo, kinda like Ice was for Utah HC
@@Supernova2464 For sure, but every city has sirens, every city has electric charge, the point was it’s has a more encapsulating name for not just their city. They are all boring though. I just find Frost to be the best one it’s still a 4/10
@@KevinQ25 fleet is the only one that really stands out to me for that reason, I really wish the sirens leaned into the mythology instead, could have been really awesome with a great logo
Imo they should have released them individually over a few days. When they all come out at once all the negative tends to add up which overshadows the good.
I really like some of the alternate names, but they might not have fit well with these teams. Emeralds, Marmots, Lumieres, Guard and Tempests could all be easily picked up by other sports teams that want a fresh name. Especially if they alliterate.
Great video as always. Unfortunately, none of these teams got proper names or logos. With all that time, THIS is what they came up with? I guess the Montreal logo is the best of the bunch but it still could use improvement.
Frost, Sirens and Charge are my favourite team names Toronto should have kept Torch, it’s definitely a good hockey name and could have the Initials to be TT
Name ranking 6. Minnesota Frost 5. Montreal Victoire 4. Ottawa Charge 3. Boston Fleet 2. Toronto Sceptres 1. New York Sirens Minnesota should’ve been the Marmots. Montreal should’ve been the Lumières. Ottawa should’ve went with Guard or Guards. Because you want the fans to shout “GUARD.” While singing O Canada. Boston, Toronto and New York has good names but logo wise I think it could be better.
I honestly think these are very underwhelming and disappointing. As if they're all made by like one person or like they took the thumbnails and then didn't change them at all for the final version. Women's league deserve good branding too, and this feels like an undercut.
I would kind of like to see the helnets lose the cage so it looks more professional but I understand why people may night like this. Either way women's hockey actually seems pretty cool
I do think that Boston missed a golden opportunity in being named the Mayflowers. I know it comes with the typical fem naming structure, but naming a team after that ship would've been such a catch for the whole state, not just the city.
The only two that are in any way half-decent are the Victoire and the Frost. The rest are basically meaningless and seem to have no connection to the cities in which they play. The Ottawa Charge is an awful name, nearly as bad as the CFL's RedBlacks where it seems they just gave up and said, "Let's use not one color in the name, Like the Reds or the Blues. Lets use two colors and run them together as one word." Sceptres would be fine for a team in LA, if they had one, but was does that have to do with Toronto?
These are all terrible, and a massive downgrade from most the old PHF brands. Some of them (like the charge) aren't even drawn well, embarrassing IMO, rushed unprofessional rubbish.
Minnesota is the only one with a good name. With how long they’ve had to think about the names, this is very underwhelming. I’ll cheer for Minnesota just because it’s the best name 😂
As much as i like the league wand want it to succeed. Its going fold like the others if it continues to be run by the same group. They need to sell these teams to independent owners ASAP. Minnesota is being left to rot after year one. This work should have been farmed out to fans primarily and local artists if they need. There is nothing unique about frost to Minnesota. Its not a symbol of our state. They only cared about placating Montreal and Toronto fans.
7:58 this has to be my least favourite of the bunch. Of all the names would have love for the Arenas to make a return or dip into basketball history and go with the Huskies.
