Most of my family is dead. But in 1976 I was still a kid by many standards. My grandma died and my grandfather came to live with us. I remember my grandfather had a TV in his bedroom he would get a big salad bowl and pile it to the top with ice cream and carry it to his room and sit back and eat his ice cream while watching Laverne and Sherly. Lord what I wouldn't give to be with my family one more time.
Tom I was 15 It was a peaceful wonderful time to be a teenager....I myself am alone divorced after a long marriage ..no kids and my family have all past away. But The Lord helps me in so many ways it overwhelms me at times...all the best!
Fortunately, for me anyway, ever second a lifetime of stuff I want to watch uploads on RU-vid. Even though I was just as happy watching "You Bet Your Life" & "The Gong Show"!
I kinda miss those entertainment shows. Carol Burnett was a fav!Jerry and Dino got into a squabble and didn’t speak to each other for all those years. I’m glad Ol’ Blue Eyes stepped out and got them to make up. You never know what the end will be. I was kinda iffy on Charlie’s Angels. Those gals were enough to give anyone a complex. I’m from the Philly area originally but missed all the celebrations since my hub and I were stationed in Germany!
The internet reminds us that too much info can be a bad thing especially if deliverd by amateurs( content creators, influencers) at least in the old days the media was fool of pros with rules the social media people ruined it all.
I distinctly remember seeing a Corvette w/ an American Flag paint job on July 4th 1976….going to the store to buy red white and blue ice cream…. I was 10
1976 was a great year to be alive. Of course there were problems yet to be solved, and political divisions existed. But NOTHING like the environment of virulent hatred that flows so freely today. Together as a Nation we celebrated the Bicentennial and we celebrated just BEING Americans. I'm glad I was there for the experience...
Oh BS that undercurrent of everything is white peoples fault was just starting. So was the sex and drugs that took us into the addiction hell we are today. I was 19 in ‘76 so I damn well know.
I was 16 that year and remember all the hoopla, everything from jets to 18 wheelers were painted in red, white and blue 'Spirit of '76" colors. The queen of England came and celebrated with America. I watched the Tall Ships sail in NY harbor on a small B&W TV while working at a radio station as a DJ on July 4, 1976. It all made everyone so incredibly proud to be an American. I'd been an amateur student of politics and America History was my greatest subject in HS. If someone had told me that year that we are maybe this ONE election coming up in Nov '22 from going full on COMMUNIST I'd have first said NO way! and second I'd have been watching a lot closer. I've seen stuff starting to come unglued as close as in Texas in the lat 80's and early 90's. Now look whee we are. 1975-1982 were the best years of my life. They're stealing elections now and have been the last 14 years. I can't believe half this country HATES the nation of their birth but we hear and see evidence of it daily. I wish I could go back to these simpler times.
My wedding was on November 25, 1976, I'll be celebrating 45 years with the love of my life this November, on Thanksgiving day. Our wedding was also on Thanksgiving day. Thank you for the memories
July 4th 1976 is one of my fondest memories of my youth it seemed like a day in America that everyone was happy and celebrated together America's greatness look how far we have gone in the wrong direction so sad
It's good that most of us think of he 1970's fondly. Even though life had some problems even then, I believe we were all much more hopeful about life in general.
For the most part, these memories shared are coming from people who were children in the 70s and who are looking back fondly on the memories of childhood. It’s far easier to be hopeful when you’re a child or teen and far less easy to be a hopeful adult in any era as time wears you down and life slowly ebbs.....but we can be just as hopeful now as we were then, if we choose to be. If we remain childlike in the celebration, wonder, beauty, hope and awe of life - in all the days of our lives - we will continue to show how much we have to be thankful for. We celebrate today and tomorrow as we do the 1970s! Have a great day!
@@noble604 You just made my day. I was in junior high and high school in the 70's. July 4th 1976 I was 16...summer between my sophomore and junior year. I do remember it fondly. I very much love your attitude. Im going to play that Eagles album right now.. :)
My mother died in 1976. I was 12 years old. It scarred me in ways I never recovered from. But I still miss the 1970's. It was the only time I was ever truly whole.
Everytime I think of 1976, I think of Elton John and Kiki Dee Dee's big hit"Don't go breaking My Heart'. How can I forget two greatest albums, Stevie wonder's, Songs in the key of life, and the Eagle's, Hotel California.
Yes indeed... Stevie Wonder! The albums of 1976 were iconic, earlier in the year with Rufus with Chaka Khan’s album topping the charts (including their hit, Sweet Thing) ... but boy oh boy .... then along came September ... that’s when Earth Wind & Fire came out with their album “Spirit” (with those hits ...Saturday Night, Getaway, Imagination....) then ...(as if that wasn’t enough) in that same unbelievable month, the album of all albums, to blow it all out of the water, Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, was released, which would remain the Number One album for the rest of the year week after week ....and into 1977. It’s amazing to think of all of the music that was released at the same time that year, music which still remain as the chart toppers. What a time!

This was probably the year I can say I started remembering everything. You get to a certain age and it's easy to remember things. The memories are thick here.
Yeah, same with me. My memories start in about 75-76. I really remember the music from that time, the bicentennial, the fireworks that year. What a different time that was!
I also graduated from HS IN 1976. It was an incredible year in an incredible decade. Great music. Great television. Great movies. Great sports. All was good. I hope there years/decades like that in the years ahead. I remember HS graduation like it was yesterday. My classmates headed out to the far corners of our country and even the world. This past summer we celebrated our 45th reunion. So sadly, over 20 of my classmates have passed. May the rest peacefully.
Year of my graduation bicentennial- our graduation tassels had a bell added to celebrate 1776 200th year. Farrah’s poster was plastered everywhere girls all wanted her hair style.
Farrah Fawcett was a huge deal. The only reason her death wasn’t bigger was Michael Jackson tragically died that very same day and news of his untimely death rocked the world took the whole globe by storm. She died earlier in the day then everyone everywhere was glued to their tv sets to mourn Michael Jackson and that took the news for weeks. People today really don’t know what a big deal she was and how much she influenced American style and culture..
Such a great year. I remember watching Donnie and Marie on Friday nights with my little sister. Many great family memories that year that I will forever cherish.
It was November 1976, I was 18 when a beautiful guy walked up to me as I walked from a college class to my car. He called me that night and we laughed so hard while watching the honeymooners. He was the miracle that changed my life - how I loved him. But all things come to an end. 2016 he left this earth and I miss him so painfully. I will go on but know I’m in that waiting room and someday we will be together again. I love you honey!
On 1/6/76, A&M Records released one of the biggest albums of the decade, "Frampton Comes Alive!". Its success surprised both the label and Frampton himself. Also notable: Stevie Wonder released "Songs in the Key of Life", "Boston" (one of the biggest-selling debuts in history, an incredible 17X Platinum according to the RIAA).
Ah yes, the year I turned 21. What a different world it was. I remember all the patriotic celebrations. Seems so long ago now. Thanks again for another great video! 👍👍
I turned 19 and remember it so well and yet some of this seemed liked I was watching and old time newsreel... its almost disturbing. I like the guy crashing his plane because the colts lost.... 2 years in prison? Nowdays he would be given maybe a fine and then the people would consider him a folk hero and give him season tickets and have a special stand where he would sit...
Also in 1976… A Star Is Born starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson was released. Gus starring Ed Asner, Don Knotts, Gary Grimes, and Ronnie Schell was released. The Bad News Bears starring Walter Matthau and Tatum O’Neal was released.
We all had a good time with the Bicentennial but for me 76 marked the year I got my first full-time job, bussing tables at Kresge's for $2.10 an hour. My first major purchase was a quadrophonic system with an eight-track player. I remember the salesman telling me how quadrophonic was the wave of the future (even though I think by that time it had already petered out, but what do you know when you're 16). Sadly, the eight track player developed a nasty habit of eating tapes so I sold the system about a year later. Loved the Gong Show. As soon as it was mentioned my thoughts immediately went to Gene Gene the Dancing Machine, but you left out the Unknown Comic.
@@riverraisin1 I remember I had to walk upstairs to the pay window and would get an envelope with filled with cash. When I graduated a couple years later I was making $5.00 an hour and that was more money than I had seen to that point. Things have changed haven't they?
A co worker of mine collects those. When we come across one in change from vending machines in the cafeteria, we march to her desk whistling Yankee Doodle and give it to her.
I remember the 4th of July festivities seem to go on forever pre and after! The picnic lasted til daylight. lol The bicentennial was a huge deal all over the country. Kids dressed up their bikes, too, in red white and blue everything!
Life was so much better then, wasn't it? I recall seeing Bicentennial items on the Freedom Train, I believe it was called. Everyone seemed to like, and care for each other so much more, also. A shame it had to change.
i was sweet 16 in 76 , i worked in my neighbor grocery store, sacking and carring grocerys out for the little old ladys that shopped with us, i didnt make a whole lot of money but i met a lot of people just like me , HAPPY
In February of 1976, American-born figure skater Dorothy Hamill won the gold medal, American-born Diane De Lieuw from Holland won the silver medal and East German-born Christine Errath won the bronze medal at the 1976 Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. In July of the very same year, little miss perfect ten herself Nadia Comaneci was crowned the queen of the gymnastics at the Summer Olympic Games in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. And as for Belarus-born Olga Korbut, she knew the agony of defeat.
I remember this year I was just a little kid but my Uncle had a huge Fourth of July party for the Bicentennial. He had a live band preforming at his house, all the neighbors came buy it was a holiday I'll never forget. And that Christmas I got a toy called Chute's Away and Evel Knievel action figure, great memories where has all the time gone 🤔
@@toefield251 Me too ! - He was nearly always shown on Sports TV on a Saturday afternoon - My old Dad would shout us in to watch him - If it was a big jump he was doing - We world get to see it live from across the pond through the week or when ever it was jumped ? We would build bikes with cow horn handlebars just for the job - Like you say my friends and I still have those scars & a few gaps in my teeth haha ! - Great times ! Thanks for sharing - Mickey Finn British Isles
@@mickeyfinnfinn5449 Nice! I see kids nowadays wearing helmets that only cover the top of their heads. In all my crashes I never once hit the top of my head, it was always face, knees, and elbows.
In March of 1976, I joined the United States work force in my 1st regular full-time job. About 10 different employers later, I should retire at the end of February 2023, with a nice pension.
We’re on the same track. I started my first paid job in August 1976, and approximately the same number of employers later, I’m looking forward to the (I hope) pretty good pension existence in 2025.
I remember going with our family to the Mall in Washington DC to watch the 4th of July Bicentennial, The Fireworks were incredible with the Washington Monument in the Foreground
1976---the year I graduated high school. My first car, my first full-time job and my girlfriend Kathy! Nickel and dime bags of weed, and $2.25 could buy a six-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon.Frampton Comes Alive, Heart,Boston,Underground FM radio. Good times!
I turned 13 in May that year. It was somehow the most influential year of my life! I won't bore you with details, but I REALLY appreciated this episode! Every clip you included made me go "Oh wow! That happened THAT year? Amazing!" Thanks for the memories!
I really enjoy these year-by-year timelines. One event I think you should have also mentioned in this one was Nadia Comaneci scoring seven perfect 10s in the Olympics.
Also - there was no mention of Detroit Tigers pitcher Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, who took baseball by storm in the summer of 1976. He was the first professional athlete to make it on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
@@jimirwin5623 , Fact: Crime would stop in Detroit, Michigan when the Bird (Mark F.) pitched. As I was a kid, the Bird made me feel it was okay to be a kid. I loved Sesame Street. I loved the pictures of the Bird next to Big Bird. Brought to you by the letter K.
On January 6th 1976 "Frampton comes Alive!" was released '76 was the year of Peter Frampton. This was a major omission he was the biggest star in the world that year.
I was 3. that year was the first year of my memory although faint .I remember the song silly love songs by Paul mccartney being on the radio all the time that summer...i didn't know the name of it then, but when I got older and heard it I had the memories come flooding back..I decided to check about the charting of the song that year because I really remembered hearing it almost hourly on the radio in New york...well it turns out it was the number one song in America for a good part of that bicentennial summer so my memory was pretty good...its almost heartbreaking to look back when all the grandparents were alive, the parents were young ...hell I'm 47 so I was young lol. I'm sure we all feel the same way when we look back on the years of our youth...the memories are double edged swords...as I look at this smiling I can feel tears as I think of my grandparents and parents...
It was definitely a different spirit and attitude then....we had the Bicentennial, giving the country an opportunity to be proud of our founding, our Constitution and Bill of Rights, our way of life. People had a healthy skepticism about government because of Vietnam and Watergate. I would take that year over this one ANY day!
Loved my jean Jean The Dancing machine!!!!!I will never forget arriving in Oahu going to my hotel lanai for a drink overlooking Wakiki and the song playing was hotel California!!!!
hi Recollection Road and hi everyone else 1976 yah I remember all of this plus a lot more I graduated high school in 1976 at 17 and thank you Recollection Road for the good memories goodnight recollection road and goodnight everyone else :-)
In 1976, we still had Saturday morning cartoons and this was the last year for the 455 Trans Am. The 77 400 (TA 6.6) had the same hp and the 78 400 (TA 6.6) had 20 more. This was the last year before GM started downsizing. CB radios were popular among drivers and thieves. The music was great and overall it was a great year.
I was in the 12th grade, my parents voted for Jimmy Carter, i watched all of the television shows featured in this video, and i liked those Mean Joe Greene commercials. ( Pittsburgh Steelers )
I spent July 4, 1976 on a beach In Massachusetts near Plymouth Rock with a bunch of friends having a clam bake. I felt that was such a fitting place. One of the places that started the US many years later from a tenuous start.
I was 8yrs old and i remember the bicentennial.🗽🎆✨ The only thing i remember about the Olympics is Sugar Ray Leonard won in boxing and Bruce Jenner won the decathlon(he was also on the Wheaties boxes)This was the 1st Presidential election i remembered watching on TV. Carter jumped out to a big lead then Ford started coming back. I was in the 3rd grade so my mom made me go to bed, when i woke up the next morning, that's when i found out Carter won.

Baa Baa Black Sheep starring Robert Conrad premiered on NBC. The Tony Randall Show premiered on ABC. Quincy, M.E. starring Jack Klugman premiered on NBC. Double Dare hosted by Alex Trebek premiered on CBS.
I was born in 1976 (February 25) so unfortunately I don’t remember all of the bicentennial celebrations, but I do remember hearing about it from my parents as I got older. Glad to have been born in such an historic year. 🙂
I got stuck going to a family reunion on the Bicentennial. Traveled 4 hours rom Atlanta to Knoxville in non stop rain. I didn't know any of these extended relatives and none seemed to want to know our branch. Ended up only staying a couple hours before we piled back into the cars for the long drive home. It sucked.
Great little video! 1976 was a great year for me. I graduated HS and had the best summer of my life. I remember voting for Jimmy Carter for the first time voting just turning 18 a few days before. I knew nothing at all about politics so I voted the way my mom did.
Carter got blamed for incessant inflation - it was because the value of the dollar had dramatically fallen due to the quadrupling of oil prices set by OPEC. Of course...many today won't admit that. Carter came in at a time when Nixon /Watergate ruined everything....Nixon had tried freezing labor wages /commodity prices....didn't work....only delayed the inevitable: inflation. Carter was a decent guy - not a crook.
The Beatles last number 1 single "Got to Get you into my life"(recorded 1966) was released as a single from Beatles Compilation album Rock and Roll. In the same year McCartney and Wings singles "Silly Love Songs" and "Let em in" reached 1 and 2 on Billboard respectively...
Boy, do I remember 1976! I was 15. Great time! America celebrating 200th birthday! Democrats and Republicans disagreed without being disagreeable and worked together for the common good of Americans. Gene Gene the dancing machine and the Gong Show.. and the myriad TV shows that didn't have heavy sex or cusses! Even Sundays were celebrated as family day where many stores were closed. Yes, days long gone by... never to been seen again!
Any 70's kids out there? I turned 8 in 1976. It was the best time to be a kid. I was Paul Revere in my 2nd grade class Bicentennial play. "The Red Coats are coming! The Red Coats are coming!" were my lines in our play. Everything was great back then. Great music, TV shows, movies, sports. I am so fortunate to have been around for such a wonderful time as the Bicentennial. There is no better year for me in my life than 1976.
Graduated from HS in ‘76. Two weeks later, a friend and I flew to Europe for a couple years mostly hitchhiking around but also working in a beer brewery in Germany for a while... didn’t seem to miss too much in the 2nd half of ‘76.
In 1976, "The New Original Wonder Woman" made its debut on ABC-TV. It starred former Miss USA-World 1972 beauty pageant winner Linda Carter as Wonder Woman and Lyle Waggoner (from "The Carol Burnett Show") as Army Major Steve Trevor. A year later in September of 1977, it was transferred to CBS and was retitled as "The New Adventures of Wonder Woman."
I was 4. Donny Osmond was my first crush. I'm kinda disappointed that you didn't include the Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight." Loved the song as a child; had no idea of its sexual implications.
Major Professional Sports League Champions in the US Bicentennial year of 1976 * MLB - Reds 4, Yankees 0 (World Series - October 16-21) * NBA - Celtics 4, Suns 2 (NBA Championship Series - May 23-June 6) * NFL - Steelers 21, Cowboys 17 (Super Bowl X - January 18) * NHL - Canadiens 4, Flyers 0 (Stanley Cup Finals - May 9-16) ALSO: The Winnipeg Jets swept the Houston Aeros (4-0) to win the WHA Avco Cup Finals (May 20-27), and the New York Nets defeated the Denver Nuggets (4-2) to win the final ABA Championship (May 1-13). The NBA and the ABA both merged during the summer of 1976, bringing the Indiana Pacers and the San Antonio Spurs into the NBA, along with the two participants in the last ABA Finals (mentioned above).
Yep...the NBA and ABA announced and agreed to the merger on June 17 and it was consummated/finalized on Aug 8.🏀🏀The Kentucky Colonels and Spirits of St Louis officially folded and their players were put in a dispersal draft(which was also finalized on 8/8/76).
You used to give the CFL championship results. I will in your stead: the Ottawa Rough Riders defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders (yes, I know!) 23-20, on Nov 28.
Also in 1976: The first Jelly Belly jelly beans were sold. Second City Television (later SCTV) premiered. "In Search Of..." starring Leonard Nimoy premiered. Indiana beat Michigan in the 1976 NCAA men's basketball championship. It was the first championship game to have 2 teams from the same conference. The Summer Olympics were in Montreal. The only time the Summer Olympics were in Canada.
